Fareed Zakaria to return Anti-Defamation League award over ground zero mosque

Here's a statement the Anti-Defamation League released yesterday in response to Zakaria's announcement:

ADL “SADDENED AND STUNNED” BY FAREED ZAKARIA’S DECISION TO RETURN AWARD

New York, NY, August 6, 2010 … In response to Fareed Zakaria returning an award that was presented to him in 2005, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said it was “saddened, stunned and somewhat speechless” by his decision.

Zakaria, the host of Fareed Zakaria GPS on CNN and a Newsweek columnist, was presented the League’s Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize in 2005 for his journalism and championing the values of the First Amendment. In a letter received today, Mr. Zakaria indicated that while he was “delighted” to receive the award then, he could not “in good conscience hold onto the award” after learning of the League’s decision to urge the relocation of the planned Islamic Center near Ground Zero.

"I am not only saddened but stunned and somewhat speechless by your decision to return the ADL Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize you accepted in 2005,” Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, wrote in a letter responding to Mr. Zakaria.

As someone I greatly respect for engaging in discussion and dialogue with an open mind, I would have expected you to reach out to me before coming to judgment,” Mr. Foxman added.

Foxman said he hoped that Mr. Zakaria “will come to see that ADL acted appropriately” and would reclaim the award bestowed upon him.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

I agree with Steve. Muslims and Islam do not accept pluralism. What kind of an academic is Fareed? All you have to do is exam the conditions in which non-Muslims have to practice their faith in the middle east. It is next to impossible to establish a new protestant church or rebuild a new one in that region. However, Muslims can build mosques anywhere they see fit with out any consequences. New Muslim converts to Christianity all most have to immigrate out of the country to have a normal life. However, in the US, Muslims and convert Christians to Islam with no problems. why the double standard. Unlike Christianity and other religions go, you cannot question the Quran. There is something very unhealthy about that. I believe the above mentioned points are examples of why Americans should be concerned about Islam. It does pose a threat to our beloved democracy and way of life.

Fareed Zakaria's return of the award to the Anti-Defamation League over its ground zero mosque comments is an indication sign that he supports terrorism. He should be fired. He is no longer reliable because he is biased. I am boycotting his participation in CNN. And I don't care what comments all those Neanderthal terrorist suporters make about my opinion.

It was hilarious to hear Farid talk about muslims accepting "pluralism". Islam is a supremacist ideology that seeks to conquer the world as this is Allah's "will". And there is no pluralism in any of the 57 muslim countries because none of them is truly democratic; this is also according to Allah's "will".
It was also hilarious to hear Farid talk about "moderate" muslims. Turkey's prime minister, the islamist Erdogan stated on Turkish television: "Talking about a moderate islam is insulting islam. Islam is islam and that's it." - Indeed: moderate islam is like a moderate crocodile: trust him and he will chew you up anyway.

GPS is a mouse trap. Zakira use economy issues as cheese to draw audience then talk about issues in muslim world. GPS is most biased show I have ever seen on a news station. CNN should stop that program. From Zakira's act one thing is obvious, extremists and moderates have in common, spread the word of Allah. Extremists bomb then moderates recommend to build a mosque to prevent further bombing. Al Queda will be proud of Zakira. Mosque at ground zero is morally wrong and historically it will be a big mistake.

Zakaria has lost all credibility as a news anchor. Holding himiself out as a fair minded moderate moslem doesn't fool me. He is phony as a $3 bill. There are fair minded people on both sides of the NY Mosque issue. By returning the ADL award, he is implying the ADL is an evil organization acting in bad faith. You can disagree with someone without yelling and insulting them, which is in effect what Zakaria has done. This act is thoroughly disgusting.

David...How about if we go with the New Testament (Christian, remember?). Show me where it states lashing, stoning, decapitating, death penalty for expressing views against Christianity... or any religion, for that matter. Close to two dozen chapters in the Bible (New Testament), almost 250 pages, but I still don't see anything near the terrorist ideology of Islam.

Good for you, Mr. Zakaria. The opposition to the mosque is analogous to anti-Semitism and shameful. One other thing about the name Cordoba House. The Moslems of the Cordoba caliphate did not persecute Jews. The Catholic rulers, Ferdinand and Isabella, expelled the Jews from Spain in 1492, the same year that they abolished the caliphate at the end of the Reconquista. What a shameful distortion of history we see in the above comments complaining about the appellation Cordoba House.

The Torah too has sections calling for the oppression of women, killing people for adultery, etc. Judaism, Christianity, Islam come from one tradition. Islam honors the jews' David and the christians' Jesus. Muslims consider David and Jesus revered prophets, followers of David and Jesus are not seen as the muslims' enemies, Jews and Christians are seen as members of one family of faith. Those who keep suggesting we are not connected are operating solely from self serving motives.

I thank Fareed for taking a stand and being rational. He has a valid viewpoint. The people commenting false statements and saying Fareed is a radical Muslim are simply wrong. The Mosque has a right to open. A lot of people are overreacting without fully knowing or understanding the issue. Just like anything now in America. Fareed Zakaria is a fine, moderate, rational viewpoint that does not cater to either the right or the left. I welcome his thoughts and viewpoints every week when I listen to him.

Kat, The difference between the Quraan and other books is that this book is the word of God, not man. If God gives you the Truth, He will deliver it wholly and nonbiased. If you cant handle the Truth, than thats another matter. The Truth will hurt some people, thats why so many people are biased, and take things out of context, as you have. Nobody said the Truth is easy. But Islam preaches peace and tolerance more often than not.

Suraat 103, Al Asr: 103.003 Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.
Suraat 110, Al Nasr: 110.003 Celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and pray for His Forgiveness: For He is Oft-Returning (in Grace and Mercy).

I could go on and on listing these verses of praise, and peace. But all you have to do is read the Quraan and you will get everything. If the reason you read it is to only find verses that describe punishment to non-believers, then you are not trying to understand both sides of the discussion, nor are you trying to have a peaceful conversation. The Bible and the Torah also have verses that describe punishment to nonbelievers. Besides, what do you think the Crusades and the Inquisition was all about? Those were Christians, were they not? And they spread hatred and fear among Jews and Muslims like wildfire.

Ive said my say, and I think Zakaria did the right thing.

    Live Long, and Prosper.

Mr. Zakaria is right to return the award. Its surprising that the ADL did what they did. Once the local board approved the decision we really should respect that.
Another option is that the Mosque building committe take their $100M and give it to the starving flood hit Paksitanis whom their government and Army has forgotten. They are begging for help. Rather than build mosques lets help human beings in distress. that will avoid our tax payers paying more than the $1billion we already pay to the Pakistani government

Quotes from Bro Dale are without context and designed to malign and misinform. It is important to know before taking a stand."Acquire knowledge. It enables its possessor to distinguish right from wrong; it lights the way to Heaven; it is our friend in the desert, our society in solitude, our companion when friendless, it guides us to happiness; it sustains us in misery; it is an ornament amongst friends; and an armor against enemies."

hard to believe Muslims killed 260 million people!! if you look at the last 100 years, WWI, WWII, jewish holocaust, various african genocides, mass genocides of european inspired communism across the world, muslims come across as babies in comparison!! idiots blowing up 1,2,10, 50 people in suicide attacks. if you really do the math, without european weapons in their hands, muslims cannot mathematically have killed even 13 million people over their 1,400 year history! They are primitive in their killing methods.

the biggest killing in muslim history, one million armenians was done by european inspired Turks! trying to emulate their "progressive" european neighbors! Go figure!

you need a calculator and a history book my friend. And a free day-pass to alcoholics annonymous.

here are more verses from the koran;Qur'an (2:191-193) – "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]...and fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah."
Qur'an (2:244) – "Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things."
Qur'an (2:216) – "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."
Qur'an (3:56) – "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help."
Qur'an (3:151) – "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority". Qur'an (4:74) – "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward."
Qur'an (4:76) – "Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah…"
Qur'an (4:89) – "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks."
Qur'an (4:95) – "Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). Unto all (in Faith) Hath Allah promised good: But those who strive and fight Hath He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward,-"
Qur'an (4:104) – "And be not weak hearted in pursuit of the enemy; if you suffer pain, then surely they (too) suffer pain as you suffer pain..."  Qur'an (5:33) – "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"
Qur'an (8:12) – "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them"
Qur'an (8:15) – "O ye who believe! When ye meet those who disbelieve in battle, turn not your backs to them. (16)Whoso on that day turneth his back to them, unless maneuvering for battle or intent to join a company, he truly hath incurred wrath from Allah, and his habitation will be hell, a hapless journey's end."
Qur'an (8:39) – "And fight with them until there is no more persecution and religion should be only for Allah"  "Allah must have no rivals."
Qur'an (8:57) – "If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember."
Qur'an (8:59-60) – "And let not those who disbelieve suppose that they can outstrip (Allah's Purpose). Lo! they cannot escape.  Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy."
Qur'an (9:5) – "So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them."
Qur'an (9:14) – "Fight them, Allah will punish them by your hands and bring them to disgrace..."
Qur'an (9:20) – "Those who believe, and have left their homes and striven with their wealth and their lives in Allah's way are of much greater worth in Allah's sight. These are they who are triumphant."
Qur'an (9:29) – "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."

There are certain Surahs in Quran that has speciifc context in space and time , and then there are general messages. Some Surahs were revealed when the Muslims were in battle-field and besieged and threatened by the pagan tribes of Quraish and some treacherous tribes within Medina who broke the Media Constitution in the battle of Khandak. These were violent attacks and threats against the fledgling Muslims. Allah commanded them to defend themselves and strengthen themselves against oppressors. So you need to mention those contexts; else you will end up misinforming ....

Really in the todays age "Fight" really translates into "Spread knowledge" to win the hearts and minds; for really knowledge and truth are the biggest weapons; violence is not the answer. If you were to revert to Islam – my best effort to have you do so is talk to you, share knowledge and dialog; not by force. Force is a last resort of defense.

You should read about the victory Mecca and life of prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and get an insight; into why he suceeded and what were his motivations and inspirations - and then you will realize this man could who transformed the whole of Arabia and brought the timeless message of Allah – is none else but the last messenger of Allah!

i feel bad for you two. chances are you both have been out of your twenties for a while, have no college education, and you waste your afternoons on a website searching quran quotes on "google" like this:

      "Islam bad muslim quotes"

seriously, im 22 years old, about to enter law school, and my mother has read the Quran and has been here since she was 20 LEGALLY unlike most mexicans, but thats another issue.

anyways she has more class, dignity, and respect for individuals than you two hillbillys most likely have in the tip of your pinky fingers. why dont you guys actually get to KNOW a muslim.. Hell, im an iranian muslim, so im probably like Satan to people like you.

but in all actuality, im 22, born in maryland, pursuing a law degree and furthering it with my PhD, and trying to live in a society with peons like you who base your ideals on fox news and what your neighbors say.

Who said, "Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt"?

READ IT, LEARN IT, BE IT. and if you cant keep your mouths shut, at least finish high school. clearly you lack education. sad. How sad is it that someone so much younger than you is so much more intelligent, and successful?

im the definition of a real AMERICAN. You nutcases are the kind of people REAL AMERICANS shake their heads in shame to even know exist.
most likely divorced, old, and no chance of furthering your lives so this is what you do on your afternoons off. youre probably the same idiots who call the SENATORS OFFICE i work in, complaining about tier 5 unemployment not being extended. get a LIFE. and a BRAIN.

Most of you posters are amazingly ignorant. you claim muslims are always trying to convert everyone, yet none of you know anything about islam! think about that for a second and you will realize how dumb it sounds. you get all of your info on islam from conservative talkers like hannity and palin, two of the foremost scholars on islam NOT!. i believe the opposition to this center is a plot to keep people ignorant and angry, but it will not work! once people enter this center and learn that we are more alike than different. thats why the jews are afraid they and the muslims worship God and the christins worship jesus and God
