Proposed New York Islamic center becomes national political issueTwo influential congressmen, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Maryland, and Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-California, debated the proposed Islamic center and mosque near ground zero on CNN's "State of the Union" with Candy Crowley. Van Hollen, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and McCarthy, recruitment chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, disagreed whether the project is figuring into national politics. Van Hollen called it a local issue; McCarthy said President Obama has made it a national one. Series on Jesus pulled from Lebanese TV after uproarCNN producer Amir Ahmed filed this report: An Iranian-made television series about the life of Jesus Christ stopped broadcasting Friday on Hezbollah-linked Lebanese stations after Christians complained that the series “misrepresented” Jesus, the state-run Lebanese News Agency reported. The biopic portrayed the Muslim view of Jesus as a prophet, while Christians generally regard him as the son of God. Some Sunni Muslims also objected to the Iranian series because it showed someone playing the role of Jesus; Most Sunnis prohibit representation of prophets. New York lawmakers debate Islamic center near ground zeroTwo days after President Obama declared his support for a controversial proposal to build an Islamic center and mosque near the site of Ground Zero in Manhattan, two New York lawmakers sounded off on the merits of the project. Republican Rep. Peter King represents a portion of western Long Island less than 20 miles from New York City; Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler represents part of Brooklyn and a slice of Manhattan that includes ground zero. In an interview Sunday on CNN's State of the Union, the congressmen differed on how they characterized the sensitivity of building a mosque near such hallowed ground. |
