French senate approves burqa ban

Paris, France (CNN) – The French senate approved Tuesday a law banning any veils that cover the face - including the burqa, the full-body covering worn by some Muslim women - making France the first European country to nationally impose such a measure.

The law passed by a vote of 246 to 1, with about 100 abstentions coming essentially from left-leaning politicians.

The legislation was overwhelmingly approved by the lower house of parliament in July and will go into effect next spring.

French people back the ban by a margin of more than four to one, the Pew Global Attitudes Project found in a survey earlier this year.

Some 82 percent of people polled approved of a ban, while 17 percent disapproved. That was the widest support the Washington-based think tank found in any of the five countries it surveyed.

obviously like religion.blogs.cnn.com however you need to test the spelling on several of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very troublesome to tell the reality nevertheless I'll definitely come back again.

France has had a long standing tradition of secularism. This (burqa ban) law is simply an extension of this tradition as it also prohibits religious displays of all kinds. The extreme opposite are places like Saudi Arabia and Iran where head coverings are mandatory, even for visitors. In the balance, prejudiced or not, it is fair.

I never realized how many bigots there are until I read these postings. The theme of most of these bigotry comments are of course ignorance. It's laughable that people that cannot even SPELL Muslim make sorts of assumptions about the people of Islam. Do you know anything about Islam? No. All you know are what the media feeds you. People associate Islam with violence and terrorist. There is so much I want to say, but I am so tired of saying it. All I will say is this: until you know what you are talking about, do not pass idiotic and discriminatory comments.

Also I find it ironic that:
    1. We live in a country where we have freedom of religion. We can build whatever we want to on private property, as long as we have right to that property. If it's my property I can build a church, a synagogue, a temple. But not an Islamic Center. People won't be accepting of building that in NYC. Because Muslims don't live there. THey don't need a place to pray or organize (god forbid they actually organize against the discrimination they have faced)/do things they are obligated to: do charity work (muslims are OBLIGATED to be chartiable), teach the REAL values of Islam (virtually the SAME as Judeo-Christian values. Why? Because Muslims believe that Islam is merely an extension of Christianity/Judiasm) and find a place to be with their own people.
    2. People burn the Qu'ran. They call themselves Christian. Yet in their ignorance, they burn the names of those whom they regard as holy- Abraham, Moses, Adam, Jacob, Mary and of course, Jesus Christ.
    3. Many people that have themselves been discriminated against, discriminate against Muslims. I am not saying everyone does. But I have met MANY people who complain about racism/discrimination and turn around and do the same things to others. I suppose its because that's human nature.

We in America are soo sick of these people telling us what to do and how they are a peaceful religion, but if they don't get their way, they threaten violence. They can burn our flag or our bible or behead an individual and no muslem says nothing, but yet when one burns the koran, these so called peace loving people threaten to kill us. Well we are NOT SCAR

I agree with iraqhusseinobama: In the Muslim world theres something called Sharia Law: if you fail to abide by it then you are punished for you sin depending on the sin or crime. and statics prove that crimes are less compared to the western world...would you be afraid of committing adultery for the fear of getting stoned? of course not because in the western society adultery and fornication is part of the norm. anyone here watch nancy grace??? some crazy criminals on that show...suprisingly not one is middle eastern or muslim...maybe .01% but majority caucasian, black, hispanic...sharia law would do justice in the west!
