Westboro Baptist Church says it will picket Elizabeth Edwards' funeral

Editor's Note: This report comes from the CNN Political Ticker.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church announced Thursday plans to picket Saturday's funeral for Elizabeth Edwards in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Kansas-based Church – monitored by anti-hate groups such as the Anti-Defamation league and the Southern Poverty Law Center – is known for its extremist opposition to homosexuals, Jews and other groups.

The church members also oppose the War in Iraq.

According to the church's website, members will hold a protest from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Edwards, the estranged wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, died Tuesday after a six-year battle with breast cancer.

Find a member and blast Slayer outside of their homes. Give Perfect 10 magazines and cigarettes to their children.

Start picketing member's funerals. And make sure it is a Catholic service.

Prayer won't help these people like a Louisville Slugger would.

They never seem to picket soldiers funerals in large cities or urban areas. Let's see them picket a funeral in South Central or Fifth Ward, then I'll be impressed.

I live in Raleigh, and I'm furious about the Westboro church's plans. I'm hoping they are just plans.

I would like to do something, but I don't know what.

These inbread, ignorant, self gratifying, attention grabbing, hippocrits need to be educated. Their church leaders are nothing but child molesters and inbreaders...This is why we must always have seperation of church and State... religion causes more wars than anything else...

The only reason these creeps are choosing this particular funeral is for the publicity. If...IF I believed in a heII, I would certainly say that the Westboro Baptists are going there and that they were the spawn of satan. However, I don't believe in that and just wish that someone would off these mofos.

Why should anyone be surprised. The fundamental principal of all religions is hatred, which these people exemplify perfectly.

Yeah most... but not all. By their fruits you will recognize them... they promote peace, don't participate in politics nor any activities of any government, would rather go to jail than be enlisted in their country's military system and kill another human, they're united in worship worldwide, they preach a message of hope... but also of destruction (not their message). No, they're not perfect... but they stand head and shoulders above the rest.

    Look for the silver lining:

Literally dozens of peer reviewed scientific studies have established firmly that the lower your IQ, the more likely you are to believe in ghosts, gods and other things that cannot be proven to exist.

Taking these people seriously gives them credibility. If anything, the rest of us should give them no attention whatsoever. Eventually their little cult of crazy will fall apart and go away anyhow. Don't feed the dragon.

This isn't a church, it is a hate group and should be treated as such by society, law enforcement and government. I think you have to have a permit for this type of assembly (the picketing), and they should be denied the permit and arrested if they show up to disrupt a funeral, this funeral or any other.

According to Fred Phelps god hates everything from America to Rock Music but I can't help but wonder if god hates Westboro Baptist Church. For starters they aren't blessed with popularity or even acceptance among the majority of people. God made them so hated that they need to be escorted away be police so that the people they tick off don't kill them. Then there was that double amputee who was supposedly stalking them (it has to take an awful lot of determination to stalk someone when you don't have any legs). You have to wonder if God is trying to send them a message. What do you think? I'm agnostic but hey if there is a God he has not been very supportive of them has he?

Picketing is great. As soon as a loved one from this cult dies, let's go picket their funeral. Who's with me?

So many calls for violence and hatred from people on this blog. I hope you are not Christians or wouldn't you say you're not much better than the WBC who itself calls for hatred? I'm hearing more calls for peaceful protest from the non-believers.

The only thing that will stop this group is if we all stop paying attention.

    James 4:11-12
Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
This sums it up perfectly...WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE. They are bigger sinners than anyone else. And how utterly cruel is it to disrespect such a kind and gentle woman and her family.

Does anyone know WHY the idiots are picketing her funeral?? I cannot imagine what possible reason they could give. I really like the fire hose/baptism idea!! They should go fo it!

Do these people really believe they are doing God’s work? Where is the love and respect that Jesus mandated. Old Testament says, “love thy neighbor”. New Testament says, “treat others as you would want them to treat you”. Who are we to judge. “Let the first one who is without sin cast the first stone”. Remember what goes around comes around and worse. To this so-called church, I say, lets love and respect one another and leave the judging up to God.

How would they feel they were the ones being picketed while they were grieving at the funeral of their loved one.
