Westboro Baptist Church says it will picket Elizabeth Edwards' funeral

Editor's Note: This report comes from the CNN Political Ticker.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church announced Thursday plans to picket Saturday's funeral for Elizabeth Edwards in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Kansas-based Church – monitored by anti-hate groups such as the Anti-Defamation league and the Southern Poverty Law Center – is known for its extremist opposition to homosexuals, Jews and other groups.

The church members also oppose the War in Iraq.

According to the church's website, members will hold a protest from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Edwards, the estranged wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, died Tuesday after a six-year battle with breast cancer.

Being a devote christian, this greatly disturbs me! Christians are the single most reason for athiests, and these people are why. Christians are not to be judgemental & hateful!! What are they thinking? It's even worse than that pastor in FL who was going to burn the Koran! How are we supposed to save one for Jesus with folks like these? That's why we are here, to spread to gospel of Jesus and spread love. Not condem people for thier chioces. Such morons (yes, I'm judging because I'm human & forgiven)

And at her funeral? Why? What did she do? They need to picket at her husbands funeral. They are a disgrace to Christians everywhere & especially to God. He will ultimately judge them, so don't worry. They'll get what's coming to them. Praise GOD for that!

      Vicki,

"...(yes, I'm judging because I'm human & forgiven)"

Well now, these Westboro people think the same thing - how convenient.

I knew someone would notice that. Your extra smart. It is convenient & they shld be thinking that. But with the level of judgement they have, thier reprocussions will be far worse than mine. Like I said, they'll get what's coming to them. Merry Christmas to you

These folks make their money when they sue those of us who "interfere" with their "right" to protest. Ignore them, even though it is very, very hard.

Indecency at all levels has taken over this country. Are those fake christians aware that christianity teaches respect for the dead? We"the people " have lost! The winners are the charlatans such as Sarah Palin,Glen Beck, fat pig Rush,Bill Bennet,Bill'O and the entire gang at Fox News Network. They are smart enough to manipulate and exploit the easely flammable, shallow minds of the "WallMart Zombies"It is appalling to know that the above are all prolific writers and I bet none of them has ever held a pen in their hand! The ultimate deception.

Anyone who thinks these guys are associated with the Christian faith are mistaken. They claim they are Baptist, BUT, the Baptist church itself has tried to separated themselves from these psychos. So please do not pin this on the Christian religion. The WBC acts independently. I'm a Pagan for anyone who was wondering.

When they came to my town to protest I got them to sign a copy of an unopened "Passion of the Christ" DVD. The guy wrote "OBEY YOUR GOD!!!!" and signed his name. It sits right on top of my fridge and I get to look at it everyday....ahhhh.... Hilarious.

The Westboro Baptist Church IS NOT the "Church" that Jesus referred to in the Gospels. These people DO NOT represent Christ NOR are they being led by the Holy Spirit. They are quite simply doing THEIR OWN THING independent of God.

As long as the media keeps on snapping pictures, giving this group space on news coverage they will continue to vomit their sick beliefs! If no one cares anymore, no media gives them coverage, no news reports, no pictures of them they will go away! Funny how a simple solution is so ignored!

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

I've been face-to-face with the Westboro brood at a number of events around Washington during the last 15 years; and one other person has ever been in my presence who eminated such depravity and hate–Karl Rove. I've been in a packed subway car with them and hundreds of by-standers thoroughly repulsed by them, and I've stumbled upon their clown wagon at night in a hotel parking lot. Both of those situations aroused an urge to lash out and kill or destroy, but they were certain WWJD moments for me, too!

Good for the Phelps family! More power to them. At least somebody is willing to stand up for their beliefs...in a country that was based on the idea of being able to speak freely. A bunch of posters on here are just weak, spineless and wouldn't ( or couldn't) stand up for their beliefs...if they have any of their own.

Rick-Agreed. Here's a belief I'm willing to stand up for among others: "You're an idiot".

Did any member of this "church" approach Elizabeth Edwards to help save her from and the error of her ways according to their beliefs, or did they sit in judgement? Even non-religious people have heard of Judgement Day and there's will come. What do they know about Elizabeth Edwards' relationship with God?

These people will most likely use the bible and God as their defence, but here is a passage for them to consider, from Matthew 6:
"Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven... And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."

At the very least, members of that "church" should have respect for the innocent Edwards children, and leave the judging to the ultimate Judge.

Heed the word of the Lord Justin, you cannot pick and choose.

Christ states in Matthew 6:15): “But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

If these self-proclaimed Christians really do believe in His word, they already KNOW they're going to hell.

So they see nothing wrong with continuing to commit so many Satanic acts, since they are already condemned to be eaten by the worm for ETERNITY.

Read the Bible. Westboro Baptist is right, you just don't like the words.
That's why like your father the devil you will go to the place where the worm never dies and the fire is not quenched

Really? There most be something worthwhile these hate spewing mongers could do with their time.
Elizabeth Edwards was a class act. She and her family deserve peace through this very difficult time.I'm appalled. What a bunch of nut jobs!
