Why do Muslims pray five times daily?

Editor's Note: CNN’s Soledad O’Brien chronicles the fight over a mosque’s construction in the heart of the Bible Belt. “Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door” airs at 8 p.m. ET March 27 on CNN.

ATLANTA, Georgia - It’s 6:00 a.m. The sun isn’t up yet, but Wahaaj Mohammed is.

He’s performing a ritual washing in preparation for his first prayer of the day. He’ll go on to pray four more times before the day is through, a practice called “salat” that many of the estimated 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide perform daily.

It’s a practice that Mohammed, a 21-year old recent graduate from the Georgia Institute of Technology, can’t imagine life without.

“It reminds you about God throughout your day,” he says. “At fixed intervals, no matter how busy you are, all of a sudden you have to take out a few minutes and you’re remembering, OK, why am I really here?”

“And while I was doing whatever I was doing, was I doing it in a manner pleasing to God?”

Praying five times a day is considered the second most important of Islam’s five pillars, after professing that there is no god worthy of worship but God and that the Prophet Mohammed is God’s messenger.

Each prayer includes a series of movements, supplications, and recitations from the Quran, Islam’s holy book, in its original Arabic.

Muslims consider prayer to be a spiritual and physical act, with various standing, bending, and prostrating postures symbolizing devotion to God.

“When you’re at your lowest point, your head is on the ground, you’re saying ‘Oh, praise to my God, the most high,’” says Mohammed, who was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. “It’s very humbling.”

Imam Zaid Shakir, co-founder of Zaytuna College - which is aiming to be the first accredited Muslim college in the United States - says salat symbolizes what Islam considers the purpose of creation: to worship God.

“As a human being, I have a physical body, I have an intellect, and I have a spirit, and the ritual prayer involves all three of those aspects,” says Shakir, who is also a professor of Islamic theology at Zaytuna.

“My entire being is involved in my prayer, and that symbolizes the dedication of my entire being to the service of my creator,” he says.

The first prayer, called “Fajr” is performed before sunrise; the second prayer, “Thuhr” comes just after noon; the third prayer, “Asr,” arrives during mid-afternoon; the fourth prayer, “Maghrib,” is just after sunset; and the last prayer, “Isha,” is performed at night.

These prayers are considered an obligation for every Muslim by the time he or she reaches puberty. Mohammed says he has rarely missed a prayer.

Preparation

Before each prayer, Mohammed performs a ritual ablution, called “wudu.” The process involves washing the hands, face, arms and feet. Wudu symbolizes a state of physical and spiritual purity required to stand before God.

“There’s a saying (in Islam) that our external form impacts our internal state, just as our internal state has an impact on our external form,” says Shakir.

When Mohammed is away from home for a prayer, he washes up in a public restroom.

“You do feel kind of awkward,” he says. “And it usually happens, for whatever reason, that someone always walks in and your feet are in the sink and they’re thinking, ‘What’s this person doing?’”

Afterward, Mohammed finds a quiet, clean place to perform his prayer, during which he will face northeast towards the holiest site in Islam, the Kaaba. The cube-shaped building is located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia and, according to Islamic tradition, was built by the prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael.

“(Muslims) all pray in the same uniform way, wherever they are, whether they’re in India or Indonesia or Saudi Arabia or America or Japan,” Mohammed says. “They all pray in the same manner, facing the same direction.”

Mohammed raises his hands to shoulder level while reciting, “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is the greatest,” signaling the start of the prayer.

Making time

Mohammed often gets questioned about how he finds the time to pray so many times a day.

“I think it’s just where you put your priorities,” he says. “If you put (prayer) at a high level, then it’s not hard.”

As a college student, Mohammed would schedule his classes and social events around the prayers. He says they mostly take five to ten minutes to complete and that technology has made it easy for him to remember when to pray.

“When the prayer time starts, (my phone) sends me a text message,” he says. “I know a lot of people that have the iPhone app that gives a little alarm or a text or something. And some people even have the iPhone app that shows them the direction of the prayer.”

Zaytuna’s Shakir says the intervals between prayer demarcate transitions within the day that necessitate the remembrance of God.

“In the morning we’re getting up from our sleep, so we’re beginning that day by praying to our Lord and our creator,” he says. “And then at noon… just as we take our lunch break to replenish our physical body, we take time to reaffirm our commitment to our creator and thereby replenish our spirit.”

“At night, before we turn in and go to sleep to regroup, we don’t know if we’re going to see the new day,” he says. “Once again, (we) take time to acknowledge our creator and the rights he has over us.”

When Mohammed is at his mosque in Atlanta, Georgia, he has the “adhan” to alert him that a particular prayer time has begun. The adhan is the Islamic call to prayer that consists of a series of phrases recited melodiously, including, “God is the greatest,” “Come to prayer,” and “Come to success.”

In Muslim-majority countries, the adhan is called from an outdoor loudspeaker. For Muslims in America, it is recited in the mosque or in the privacy of one’s home. Mohammed compares it to the ringing of a church bell to signify the start of a service.

Mohammed says that in addition to adding structure to his day, salat helps keep him accountable for his daily actions and lets him have a personal relationship with God.

Striving for spiritual success

In the glow of a recent coming dawn, Mohammed and his family complete their first prayer of the day with a phrase in Arabic that means, “May the peace and mercy of God be upon you.”

He notes that the call to prayer before sunrise has an extra phrase added in: “Prayer is greater than sleep.”

“So, no matter what you’re doing in your life, it’s always, ‘God is greater than that’ - whether it’s sleep, whether it’s work, whatever it is, God is the greatest,” Mohammed says, pausing to rub his eyes.

“Behind any type of success,” he says, “there’s always a sacrifice.”

The bottom line in all the discussions above is that: The freedom to practise your religion is a universal right. But it becomes harmful when we become God on Earth and be judgemental about which religion is right. Worse still, we become fanatical to the extent of killing others in the name of 'your' God.

If all religions can start practising the religion of PEACE and tolerance, than the world can be a better place.

i think you're so right on point bill. it's letting our anger and violence fuel us into saying and doing things in the name of religion when i'm sure God would not approve. it's hard for me to be a muslim and silently listen to people hate on me for being a muslim but when i calmly explain my side and i try to be peaceful, that's when i'm much more effective. PEACE people is all we need. let go of your bloodthirsty hate and love the rest of humanity and pray they accept peace the way you do

In this case, just as it has happened so many times before, it seems that the executioners used a dull knife again. These guys really left the man take the imminent death with all of its worst. The knife wielding masked man slowly cut through the neck of the victim as if to take in the joy of causing slow and painful death. He cut through man’s trachea and esophagus which detached victim’s mouth from the rest of the body, yet he’s still making desperate attempts to scream and all the noise is coming out of his neck. It’s brutal.
As carotid arteries got cut, the blood started gushing out in volume you have never seen before. The massive blood loss along with horrific sound this beheaded man lets out make this easily the most brutal beheading video you will have ever seen. Also notice how just before the beheading starts, the camera focuses on victims bruised arms. That man was heavily beaten prior to his painful execution. He was given a choice to say his last words – it’s in a language I don’t understand (possibly a Middle Eastern tongue) but you can tell the man has already gone through hell on Earth and knows the worst is yet to come. He likely wished for a quick death so he’s done with it, unfortunately for him, he was not granted that wish. Brutal video.I don’t want to sound mundane with warnings, WARNING on this one. Extremely brutal video. Very bloody. You have never seen this much blood ejected out of man’s body before. Knife executioners used to behead this man was likely really dull which you can tell by what it took to cut through the soft tissues of the neck. The video then jumps to the footage of decapitated head laying atop man’s dead body – which I’m assuming is because cutting through his spine took them forever, so they got rid of that so they’re not ridiculed for being complete amateurs. Once again – this video will hunt you for years, even if you’ve seen previous beheadings and took it like a champ. This one is worse. The sound is extremely painful and the amount of blood lost is beyond comprehension. You can’t even believe heart can pump so much blood with each beat. Watch at your on risk, you’ll have to deal with it yourself if you opt to go for it. I’m not kidding, it’s the worst beheading video ever! Still didn't tell me why they pray 5 times a day (as compared to Christianity)-thats all I wanted to know.

    March 27, 2011 at 8:57 pm |
    • LKJ

Muslims pray five times a day to remember God, our Creator. I grew up as a Christian and I remember being encouraged by the minister and others to pray often. But usually people get tired or busy and even with the best intentions they may not pray that much. Islam gives structure to this injunction. It doesn't matter if I'm tired or busy. I need to say my prayers. And I'm always glad I took that time out to pray, even when I didn't really feel like it.

Yeah right: The article reads that 1.5 billion potential Islamic terrorists raise their smelly behinds five times a day in prayer. They make it sound as if it were a great accomplishment to victimize 1.5 innocent people and pervert them into taking up Islam. Most of those 1.5 billion were forced by the swords of Islamic/Arab assassins to become Islamists. They were not converted by love or by their free will. So don't even try to impress us with your alleged 1.5 billion victims of Islam because most of them were forced to become Islamists.

The truth is so plain, simple and pure. No way in the world you can fool 1.5 Billion people. They all have made the choice like me by understanding the truth

do you have official proof that the majority of them were forced to be muslims? you're just stating your opinion, you should really have conviction with evidence and facts, and that way you would be less ignorant.

((Yeah right: The article reads that 1.5 billion potential Islamic terrorists raise their smelly behinds five times a day in prayer.))

Strange thought it was said that Muslims preformed ablution before each prayer five times a day with water.... While your type being a non prayer might not do that at all or maybe once a week before your prayer if you ever do pray...and if you ever did preform same it would be by the use of toilet paper and no water is used at all...so how could they be having smelly behinds when you not???
Yickkkkk you make me sick imagining that, surely you stink....!!!

Coming from the Central part of the United States fear and distrust of Muslims is alive and well and based on the perception that most Muslims are not terrorists but most terrorists are Muslims. Also adding to that perceived fear and mistrust is that there is very little reported condemnation of Islamic terrorism by Muslim leaders in particular and Muslim people in general. Many of the media reports portray that teaching received at Mosques is dedicated to stir up hatred against the dreaded infidels. With this barrage from media sources is it any wonder that many average second or third generation Americans dislike, fear, or hate Islam in particular and Muslims in general?

It's no wonder we muslame are so primitive and poor. We spend almost all of our time praying and there no time left for anything else useful in life. 😦

I am suprised........primitive and poor.......you have no knowledge of history. modern science, medical, astronomy, maths etc , the bases for these have been provided by us. poor.....why maynmar north korea and non muslim african states poor, and saudis and kuwatis rich?

I'm very sad to read your comment. Maybe your parents raised you as a Muslim but you didn't learn to appreciate Islam. As a convert, I can see the beauty in everything Muslims do. It takes just a few minutes to make each prayer and then we can go about our lives. Some Muslims don't accomplish much because of their own laziness. But some of us write books, teach children, build buildings, treat illnesses–and still have time to pray.

the Saudi's and Iraqi's don't look poor... at least the dictator's in power; they are good Muslims too, right?

    • MoHammed

@LKJ – my parent told me to pray ten times a day instead of 5. They told me the more time I spend on praying the better. But I am so sicken tired of it. What can I do ?? By the way, sometime I have to wake up in the middle of the night to pray too. 😦

Selecting verses out of context is all you people do. And even if these verses are there, then why dont you select those verses like......... Quran says: "Killing of one innocent human being is like killing whole humanity". If you people want to keep arguing by giving out context references then its useless to discuss anything with you people

    March 27, 2011 at 8:41 pm |

we are simply arguing the same as 'you people' argue with us – that door swings both ways.

    Nice article, fair to islam.

Just imagine what cnn would write if this were Christianity; Jesus would be pulled through mud, pastors would be slimed, adherents would be called racists, and all the past bad guys would be held up as examples of all Christians.

Of course... that would be cnn's usual slanted, biased hate reporting.

yup... anything anti-Christianity is Business as Usual... I enjoyed the 'Estimated 1.5 Billion Muslims" reference. I haven't seen a figure larger than 1 billion EVER...

"American" muslims pretend to be proud to be Americans. Just part of their deceit. If they were proud to be americans, they wouldn't be trying to change America to their ways.

Who were the crusaders? Who they killed in Jerusalem? That means Christianity also teaches war. Which religion Hitler belongs? Spain was once a Muslim state. Now it’s not allowed to offer prayer in Masjids. Why? In modern history not once a Muslim country attacked non Muslim state. But non Muslim states were at war not only with other Christian states but are attacking on Muslim states and killing Muslims and you say its Islam teaching war then I ask you what Christianity teaches you?

    March 27, 2011 at 8:14 pm |
    • Chuck

Both religions have their issues. We are imperfect people. All of us. Christianity doesn't make people perfect. Ghandi said " I like your Christ, I don't like your Christians." Who has ever investigated the Quran? Who? Those that teach don't know much about it. Who and where are the Quran scholars? Where are the facts? Religion can always be debated...but historical facts are irrefutable. Jesus is...the visible image of the invisible God. Are Muslims guarenteed salvation? Serious question. Is there a guarentee of salvation and if there is where is it quoted in the Quran?

      March 27, 2011 at 8:29 pm |
    • Syed

No one can claim to have guaranteed salvation. No ONE. Its only ALLAh who knows and has the power to pardon. What I want to say is Islam doesn’t teaches war but only in the condition when Muslims are attacked and which is logical so please stop all these propaganda against Islam. Don’t make fun of our prophet by making cartons. Stop burning Quran. We never do these things against Jesus or Bible.

      March 27, 2011 at 8:48 pm |
    • Syed

Its not that nobody has investigated Quran. There are established scholars and they know it very well. But the problem is there are few people who think that they know Quran but in reality they are harming islam by not propagating true essence of the religion

If Islam taught of killing non-Muslims then there shouldn’t be a single Coptic Christian alive.

There's nothing wrong with religion; whether Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist or whatever. Knock yourself out as long as one does not infringe, violate, force, or dictate their religious or personal beliefs on others. That is really the crux around "Freedom of Religion". That you can pray to whom ever, whether it be god above, or the worm below and no one has the right to change you, force you, or stop you from your own religion or beliefs as long as you do not hurt or injure others.

It is when others force their beliefs on others and do not respect other religions, that we have problems in the world. I am a Christian and have high regard and respect for the Muslim and Jewish religion, as well as others. They are unique in their own sense and we can all learn a lot from others, and their beliefs. However, it all stops when it is being forced upon you. That is the point. Lastly, no one religion can say they pray to the only right god, and others do not. As far as I'm concerned, if the only real god was the Christian God, then all others are children of the devil. Oh wait, wasn't man and woman created in the image of the Christian God? From Adam and Eve? And don't Jews, Christian and Muslim's all believe in what is in Genesis, from Adam and Eve to today?

In various times various prophets have come to bring the message of god to people (else how will the people of that time be accounted for if they didn't had any revelation). As per Islam – Moses, Jesus, Mohammad and various others were all prophets at various times.

So I don't think there is any controversy unless one wants to create it. A muslim is just saying I believe in God and his messenger Mohammad. He is following the way of Mohammad to attain his God's mercy. There is no interference with other religions. But yes a muslim cannot be diplomaticaly correct that there are different gods and everyone has his own god – the basic belief is that there is one god. Respect to people of other religions is actually required (a must) as per Islam. But a muslim will never give up his belief to be politically correct or to look good in others eyes at the expense of his gods will. Unfortunately people are judging muslims according to their norms and not letting us what we are.

Please stop calling your self a christian, you do not have a clue what Christ did for you or the world. Go read John 14:6.
Being a Christian is NOT a religion. Religion's have rituals that must be done , being a true Christian one only has to BELIVE that Christ and only Christ can save you from Hell and yes he is the only begotten son of God

      March 27, 2011 at 10:02 pm |
    • Sam

@Friend of JC – if Christ is the son of god and he can only save everyone from hell then what happens to the people who came before Christ. Will all of them go to hell just because they were not enlightened?

Why is it not so easy to understand at different times god has chosen messengers to come to enlighten people of that time. Over time the original message of the messenger gets corrupted and requires a new messenger.

      You know at last I see some reasonable people talking here (Hearts are Pure Clean),now let me quote for you what Quran says about Islamic belief just few important verses out of the second chapter;

      Al-Baqara sura 02:
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
"Alif. Lam. Mim. (1) This is the Scripture whereof there is no doubt, a guidance unto those who ward off (evil). (2) Who believe in the Unseen, and establish worship, and spend of that We have bestowed upon them; (3) And who believe in that which is revealed unto thee (Muhammad) and that which was revealed before thee, and are certain of the Hereafter. (4) These depend on guidance from their Lord. These are the successful. (5)".

      Al-Baqara (The Cow) sura 02:
Allah! There is no God save Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him. Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedeth with Him save by His leave? He knoweth that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge save what He will. His throne includeth the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous. (255) There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower. (256) Allah is the Protecting Guardian of those who believe. He bringeth them out of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their patrons are false deities. They bring them out of light into darkness. Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein. (257).

      Al-Baqara sura 02:
"The messenger believeth in that which hath been revealed unto him from his Lord and (so do) believers. Each one believeth in Allah and His angels and His scriptures and His messengers – We make no distinction between any of His messengers – and they say: We hear, and we obey. (Grant us) Thy forgiveness, our Lord. Unto Thee is the journeying. (285) Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as thou didst lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk. (286)".

This is a fiery subject. I do believe that prayer & rituals belong in the home or at the place of worship. It is awkward, uncomfortable & plain rude in certain situations. Public rituals isolates them from others & why do they take all that time in the bathroom when there is a line & people gotta get back to work. So many things such as this belong in the home or the place of worship, period!!

Muslims could care less about who they inconvenience. Of course our politically correct society allows them to pray, or whatever, any time they want. It doesn't matter how much it costs in lost production etc. They are a protected minority with friends in high places.

Why would it bother you for people to fulfill their religious obligations? If they are not at home, they still have to do it. If nothing is that sacred to you, then so be it, but don't deny others that right.

if you don't believe in God, it's one thing for you to believe that prayer is isolation. but for the rest of the God-fearing world prayer is seen as something sacred. i think it's really rude for people to grind or make out in public, especially in front of little children and yet many people are okay with that and they're down on someone praying out of the way quietly? where is the sense and logic in that? and i'm sure if you ask the person 'taking up all of your time' in the public bathroom from using the sink or whatever, you should probably ask to cut in, because more times than none they'll be okay with that.
