Navy plan to allow same-sex marriage on bases draws opposition

By Charley Keyes, CNN Senior National Security Producer

Washington (CNN) - A preliminary U.S. Navy plan to allow its chaplains to perform same-sex marriages in military chapels after the end of "don't ask, don't tell" has fired up congressional opposition.

All services are moving forward with the transition from the present ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in uniform. Top Pentagon officials are expected to sign off on the new rules and the progress of training in coming weeks.

An April 13 memo from the Navy officer in charge of chaplains says they "may" officiate at same-sex marriages or civil unions, depending on both local laws and their religious organization.

It is not clear if the other services would have a similar provision.

"Regarding the use of base facilities for same-sex marriages, legal counsel has concluded that, generally speaking, base facility use is sexual orientation-neutral," Rear Adm. Mark Tidd, the Navy's chief of chaplains, said in the memo. "This is a change to previous training that stated same-sex marriages are not authorized on federal property."

Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong:

    01) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

    02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

    03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

    04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

    05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; my parents ran out and got divorced the minute they heard that a gay couple got married in Vermont.

    06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

    07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

    08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. We really want 21st social policy set by people who still believe in Iron Age myths from the Middle East that were cobbled together during the Dark Ages.

    09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

    10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

      @ Artist,

I've already answered this question once.....I won't answer it again. I will answer your "no assumptions" part. I haven't assumed anything but my FAITH is that God used man to write the good book. Faith is all that anyone needs to believe.

      @ SeanNJ,

You can think whatever you want...I know without a shadow of a doubt I'm on the right side of things b/c of what the Bible says....by the way....its pretty clear.

    @ Jesusfreaker,

    you say:

CW, you've obviously haven't read the Bible. Try it. It's quite shocking what you will find in there. Take it literally if you want, but you won't be a free man for long if you believe and follow all of God's laws. You, like all Christians pick and chose the scriptures that agree with your opinions and beliefs.

    ------------------------------

    I say:

I read the bible everyday......you talk of the co-ntrid-ictions. There are no co-ntrid-ictions in it. Yes we are NOT free to live as we want b/c God calls us to live by his will. That means we have to "d-ie to self" if you will and live holy lives and do the best we can to live as God wants us to live. By the way just for you....yes the old testament has the old laws on how to worship, sacrifice, and live. If you read the book of Hebrews...it addressed this so please go ahead and read on. Lastly, I'm not che-rry picking as you say BUT, in both the new and old testament the Bible stated that this lifestyle was a sin and wrong...peace.

    @ Ed,

From above posts...my point is it may be that alcoholic's have a "disease" as you call it BUT....its their "choice" to change and follow God's ways right? If that is the case all your so called "g-ay friends" also have a choice to act upon their lifestyle right? What I'm saying is that I DO believe that this is wrong and yes I DO believe that there should be laws that protect marriage. God meant for marriage to be between a man and woman..period. This is a sacred covenant that shouldn't be entered into lightly or with an option to div-orce later when the so called "love" wears off.
