My Take: May 21st doomsday movement harms Christianity

Editor’s Note: Robert Jeffress is pastor of the 13,000-member First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas and the author of 17 books, including the forthcoming "Forget Saving America!"

By Robert Jeffress, Special to CNN

In January 1961, a few days before John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as president, he invited Billy Graham to spend a day with him in Key Biscayne, Florida. After a round of golf, Kennedy and Graham were returning to their hotel when Kennedy stopped the white Lincoln convertible he was driving by the side of the road.

“Billy, do you believe that Jesus Christ is coming back to Earth one day?” Kennedy asked.

“Yes, Mr. President, I certainly do,” the evangelist responded.

“Then why do I hear so little about it?” Kennedy wondered.

Were Kennedy alive today, he probably wouldn't be asking the same question.

During Kennedy’s lifetime, few mainline Protestant churches discussed the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Fifty years later, however, televangelists, network television programs, movies and books like the "Left Behind" series — which has sold more than 60 million copies — have succeeded in placing the return of Jesus Christ in the public consciousness.

A 2004 Newsweek poll revealed that 55 percent of Americans believe in the Rapture, the snatching away of all Christians prior to the end of the world and the return of Jesus Christ.

As a pastor who preaches often about Bible prophecy, I am grateful for the general awareness people have of the promised return of Jesus Christ.

But our culture’s newfound interest in the end times has a downside. Bible prophecy inherently attracts fanatics. As a seminary professor of mine used to say to our class, “Remember, wherever there is light, there are bugs!”

One of those fanatics is Harold Camping, the founder of the Christian broadcasting ministry Family Radio in Oakland, California. Camping has predicted that the Rapture will occur at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, followed by the end of the world five months later on October 21, 2011.

Family Radio has plastered billboards across the nation with the warning “Judgment Day, May 21, The Bible Guarantees It!”

Road trip to the end of the world

Readers should note that Camping first predicted the world’s end in 1994. He says he was wrong due to a mathematical miscalculation.

Now I am going to make my own prediction which I’m (almost) willing to stake my life on: May 21 will come and go without any Rapture.

How can I be so certain of my prophecy? The Bible itself says that no one can know the date of the end of the world.

Predicting the apocalypse

In discussing His return to Earth, Jesus told His disciples, “... of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.” (Matthew 24:36).

If God has not even revealed to his own son the date the world will end, I doubt he has revealed it to Harold Camping.

My hunch is that the date God ultimately has chosen is one that will not be plastered on billboards around the country.

What harm is there in an 89-year-old preacher making prognostications about the end of the world?

First, such predictions give non-Christians one more reason to discount the Bible.

For example, many secularists have dismissed the Bible because they assume that it teaches the world is only 6,000 years old. In reality, the Bible never makes such a claim about the Earth’s age. Instead, some well-intentioned Christians have misused the genealogies in the Bible to attempt to ascertain the date of creation.

Similarly, when next Saturday passes without a Rapture, some will say, “See, the Bible was wrong again,” when, in fact, it will have been Harold Camping who was wrong — again.

Second, predictions about the end of the world always lead some people to make foolish decisions. When a self-professed prophet named Edgar Whisenant predicted that the Rapture would occur in 1988, a couple I know responded by charging their Visa card to the limit with a trip to Disney World, believing the bank would be left with the bill once they had left the Magic Kingdom for God’s kingdom.

Obviously, things did not go as planned.

A look at the ways the world could end

Just as every teacher knows how unproductive and unfocused students are the week before school lets out, God knows how tempted we would be to neglect the responsibilities he has entrusted to us if we knew the date we would be raptured into heaven. That is why God refuses to show us his calendar and instead instructs us to focus on our assignment.

But the most harmful consequence of Camping’s false prediction is that it discourages people from making the necessary preparation for the real event when it actually occurs.

Remember the boy who cried wolf once too often? The villagers were so hardened to the boy’s false alarms that they were unprepared when the wolf finally arrived.

When May 21 passes and Camping’s prophecy is added to the ash heap of discredited prophecies, some will be tempted to join the chorus of cynics whom the Bible predicts will mockingly say, “Where is the promise of Christ’s coming?” (2 Peter 3:3-4).

Make no mistake about it. As Billy Graham affirmed to President Kennedy, Jesus is coming back some day. Over 1,800 verses in the Old Testament and 300 verses in the New Testament prophesy of the lord’s return.

Don’t allow the Harold Campings of the world keep you from making the necessary preparation for the end — whenever it may be.

Is this even a question? Date setters have been for a long time considered silly among the general Christian community.

This is not fiction this is true factual events that are proven.WILL happen! Has nothing to do with "god" or any "god"!
Not a fake storybook like event that is descibed in the fantasy book "The Bible"
Comet Elenin's magnetic field has reached the Earth....triggering volcanoes Earth quakes drought and many dissasters over the past few weeks. These dissasters WILL increase in magnitude as it nears us and passes us by . On the dates of September 24th ,25th, and 26th It will pass between the Earth and the sun and will block out much light causeing three days of darkness (just as said in the christian bible marking the near end times). On October 17 it will be at its closes point to the Earth and its effects will be the strongest...It will then be on its way away from us...But then ...on November third the Earth WILL pass through the trailing tail of this comet ..who knows what kind of effect this will have on the Earth but I imagine it will be something spectacular and will probably touch off many events that coincide with the eventsa portrayed in the book of revelations. There are also two giant bodies following this comet that will too reach us. We do not yet know much of these two objects but the American Indians proficize that these other two objects are called the "blue and Red Cachinas....that will bring about a new Earth and a major change to our way of life. This is Scientific fact....these events will happen! Call it Science or Call it "God" that is your choice! Just love your brother while you have the chance , and be greatful that you live in a time that you can witness these events that WILL be spectacular! Research this all yourselves if you want , You will not hear of this through the media. They do not want to cause panic! Think of all the things that your government has been doing lately,, Ask yourselves why they are doing things that they are doing these days.

This is not a doomsday prediction by any means it is a factual scientificaly based thing that is fact and WILL happen. When this passed by saturn it disrupted the rings and turned the planet 90degrees off its axis (check it out ) When it passed by Jupiter it created a major planetary storm and disrupted the entire gas giant planet. ALL fact!! And yes Well known by your government too!

I find it funny that the very people who if you were to ask *What happens when u die* would tell u ....um nothing, uh I dont know, um we go into nothingness..these very people are the ones bashing christians for believing in what they believe. Why? I say let people believe in what they want to believe......after all, were all going into nothingness when we die...right atheist?

We do not die! Our bodies do and then are recycled back into the universe. The universe IS a finite thing . Everything that exists has always existed in one form or another. Every single atom has always and always will be...somewhere in our universe. This is fact has nothing to do with any God or any theory. Nothing truly dies. why do so many fear life? why do so many only care about the material things and money . They are all meaningless. The ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS LOVE.

The word rapture is not even in the Bible ... There will not be one if it were ... no reason for it when you think with common sense. A creator has nothing to GAIN by having humans born ... give them a choice to be SAVED or not .. or miss the elevator if do not ... just to call them to heaven ..... Heaven is not even UP .. its in a plane of existance right under our noses.

We were created for God's pleasure to worship Him. We sinned and became separated from God. Because God's being is love, He gave us an opportunity to be reconciled to Him through His Son Jesus. Jesus took our punishment for sinning by dying and gave us His reward which is eternal life. Heaven is very real. One day those who believe will be gathered together in Heaven.

      August 5, 2011 at 11:07 am |

"We sinned and became separated from God'

God is the one that created and temped Eve knowing she would take the fruit. That is not a loving god knowing the fate of mankind and then continually destroying them. That is if your god is really all knowing.....

God is all-knowing but He gives us freewill. If we choose to accept His offer of salvation, we will be saved. If we refuse Him, we will be lost. He gives us the power to choose.

Doomsday predictions are an inevitable product of the appearance of Private Judgment during the Reformation. Previously, throughout Catholic Europe, christians respected the authority and interpretation of the Church on matters of faith and doctrine. Now, in Protestant areas, any individual in effect had his own bible, as an individual felt free to interpet that bible according to his wits (or lack thereof).

Private Judgment is Protestantism's achilles' heel.

Bush was well known for being an end of times fanatic, but the curious thing to me was the statement in one of his unfortunate inaugural addresses where he stated that an "angel in the whirlwind directs this battle." Curious statement for a professed Christian, but not so curious for a follower of Islam. It took me awhile to figure it out, but the whirlwind to which Bush referred is the constantly circling crowds at Mecca around the meteorite they revere, to which some have attributed supernatural powers. In this light, it seems clear to me that the Bush family converted to Islam years ago and that George was actually our first Muslim president. I'm not so certain that the King of Saudi Arabia would hold hands with one he considered an infidel, but that seems to be no problem for either the senior or junior Bushes – the former was photographed holding hands with the king just a few days after 9/11. Curious behavior for a president whose country had just been attacked and most considering that 19 of the alleged hijackers were Saudis. So there you have it republicans: As much as you rail against Islam, you're the ones who actually elected the first Muslim president. There's always a twist to these politician's lies. You just have to find it.

It makes me sick that grown adults would believe anything based on faith alone, especially when it's so ridiculously and obviously written by mankind. It's like history was mauled by a religious fanatic who incorporated a bunch of nonsense and fairy-tales into tidbits of historical facts. Believing anything on faith alone is the very definition of the word foolish. How could anyone possibly know anything about a Universe that we haven't even explored 1/100,000,000,000,000th of? It's truly pathetic that people have created a book, written by man and propagated through rhetoric and distorted "facts" that hold no weight or merit. Rhetoric and dogma are powerful tools and so is religion. It's time to wake up and leave ancient mythology in the past, where it belongs.

People have many things to say about Christianityl, but I don't expect the dead to understand the living when I visit a grave site that would be very foolish of me, and I don't expect the living to understand the dead. But faith is not blind, to have faith is to see and unserstand that we might act with wisdom. There is a famine coming upon the world with all the other problems we are facing and sure enough we warned about the problem. Today we see the problems in teh USA wich will one affect the world a prophecy spoken of time back. the cost of bread and grain will rise and now e are experiencing the shaking of the world that will bring about this great famine.
I think there should me more planning to care for people around the world. There is a great famine coming that will hit the entire world that you won’t be able to control. We need to start storing up and warning people of the coming danger, not just try to feed and leave people behind. A time is coming when you won’t be able to reach many, and many will die. This is the beginning of the danger to come; it is a prophecy that was foretold. The cost of bread will rise due to a shortage, to benefit and save lives you should start storing up grain for at least twenty years to die out a seven year famine. Revelation 6:5-6 and when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, a measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

Just because a few people misinterpreted the Bible does not mean that all people who are Christians are fools, or whatever you called us. Yes, human beings wrote the Bible however they were told by God what to write and how to write it. This article is about a few people who got their facts mixed up. It does not mean that all Christians believed the world would end on May 21st, and does not mean that Christians are weak in any way.

""Our Nation As I See It"

My Country Tis Of Thee, Sweet Land Of Liberty
Who are these people we have elected to run this great nation of ours.
"HOME OF THE BRAVE, LAND OF THE FREE"
Land of GREAT leaders such as Roosevelt, Ike, and JFK..
Leaders that would INSPIRE you, in every facet of your life,
no matter what type of job you held, or what honors were bestoud on you, that we were all created equal,(GOD BLESS, MARTIN LUTHER)FOREVER), that we were all working toward a better world for our childrens, children.
Where is the love of JESUS CHRIST ?
Where is the love we need to give too each other ?
Where can we give it To make this world a better world.
That's what I took from these Great Leader's.
( Love and Respect for ALL )
Have we've been misguided, by these elected officals in our goverment.?
Guided away from our belief in our Great Country?
Guided away from our belief in ourselves?
We even believe now (THIS WORLD COULD COME TO AN END).
Is that what ( Martin Luther, JFK, Roosevelt, and IKE) wanted ?
Is this WORLD we live in, gotten out of hand ?
Are we too educated to understand ?
Is it the nature of man to distroy ourselves, as we all thought.
Are we all just playing a game ?
Or, are these leader's of the world, leading us in the distruction of ourselves.
( TIME) as I see it, is running out.
What is it about our nature ?
Can't we all live in PEACE ?
Where is the love of ( JESUS CHRIST ) ?
    THAT'S YOU AND I
Where is the LOVE we need to give to each other ?
To turn this WORLD back in th right direction ?
Where can we give it ?
For, we need to give it
For, if we can"t give it.
EARTH, will come too an end, PERIOD.
    WOW !!!
    That all sounds CORNYYYYYYYYYYYYY !!!!!!!
But, ( THINK ABOUT IT )
WE CAN TURN THIS WORLD AROUND
It all start's with you and I
Or, Do you want to play the game of death ?

The world will end some day, period. That seems to be one thing science and religion agrees on. At least science and christianity. You would think we would be pouring everything we have into the space program so we can get off this rock and continue to exist somewhere else. Although we have nothing to base our predictions on, it seems unlikely that the human species can exist forever, especially on this planet. It's almost certain this planet and this sun will cease to exist at some point. What happens after we die is anyones guess, but what is going to happen to humanity and earth is absolute. Our only chance for continued existence is to get off this planet eventually. It also puzzles me why so many people think it is impossible to have belief in God and science at the same time. It is curious that there aren't any churches that have evolved their christian beliefs to co-exist with scientific facts and theories. The funny thing is that nothingness and loss of self awareness frightens me more than any rapture or judgement day ever could.

    Can anyone honestly believe the Christian Propagandists portraying that this world will End in the near Future? The KJVB tells us that;

2Peter 3:10 But the day of the LORD will come as a thief in the night in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

2Peter 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of GOD, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat

My being a realist compares these two verses of scripture to this earth's final moments when the sun will go nova and the sun will expand itself to devouring all the sun's planets. Our worldly ongoings will be up to us to sublimate our own Futures in whatever means our governmental bodies so decide. Sure, the sun may bring forth massive solar flares that may disrupt and knock out our Orbiting Satellites causing massive trauma to the general populace who watch TV via satelitte transmissions not to mention the global positioning systems.

Jesus Christ did Himself say in John 18:36 Jesus answered, My Kingdom is NOT OF THIS WORLD: if my Kingdom were of this world, then would my servents fight that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my Kingdom not from hence.

With this being said, "Wherethen is Christ's Kingdom to be found?"

One would have to meditate upon what I am about to write next.

Fractal Cosmological Relativity is yet to be an affirmation but here is the jist of it; "There are but Two states of Fractal Cosmological Relativity we should concern oursleves with. 1.The Celestial Universe 2.The Cellular Universes These two Fractals are of such Self-Similarity in conjunctions that boggle the mind! Within our Celestial Universe there are stellar phenomenons that Mimic the cellular Substances within the Cellular "Universes". So?

The Crux of this Perspective is understanding that GOD's Real Embodiment is the Celestial Universe while His Sons and Daughters, the Gods and the Goddesses are the embodiments of Life's Cellular sized Universes. So then where are we in this perception? Are we not but likened to being nothing more than Vessels of Containment with no way of Salvation or Hope of Recieving Eternal Life as presented in the KJVB? On the contrary, when a person expires from this Celestialness, we are wisked away deep into the inner Recesses of our Body's Cellular Universes where we are adjudicated to be worthy by Those who rule there and they are the Godly Kings and Queens and Righteous who have been ordained throughout our womanhood's generations of child bearing.

Am I but a Fool who makes this up and is but a Fairytale or?

I am but a messenger with but a message from within my mind's Imaginative Decree of its' Solemnest devotion to rightly Understand GOD, GODDESS, Gods and Goddesses, Manliness and Womanhood. I bear no misgivings to anyone who is willing to meditate upon my WORD.

"Our Fathers who are within the heavens of Heaven, hallowed be their Names. Their Kingdoms come, their wills be done, upon Earth as it is in their heavens Give us every day our daily thoughts and daily bread and lead none into Temptations for GOD is the Power and the Glory. Forever and Ever! Amen."
