New reality series tracks lives of American Muslims

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - TLC is premiering a reality series about the lives of American Muslims this fall,  "All American Muslim," the cable TV network announced this week.

The series tracks five Muslim families living around Dearborn, Michigan, home to one of the nation's largest Muslim enclaves.

The series is about “inviting viewers into a world they might not otherwise experience,” said TLC's general manager Amy Winter in a press release.

"Through these families and their diverse experiences, we will explore how they blend their values and traditions with everyday life in America," Winter said in the Thursday release, "providing insight into their culture with care and compassion.”

The series, which premieres in November, tracks "very distinct lives that often times challenge the Muslim stereotype," according to the release.

Characters include a pair of tight-knit sisters, one of whom wears a traditional Islamic headscarf and one who sports piercings and tattoos and has recently married an Irish Catholic man who is converting to Islam.

Another character is a consultant to big auto manufacturer and struggles to strike a balance between work and raising a modern Muslim family, according to the TLC release.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released earlier this year found that 46% of all Americans have a favorable view of American Muslims, while 26% have an unfavorable view.

"Overall, positive views of American Muslims have risen since 2002, when memories of 9/11 were still fresh in most Americans' minds," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland in March, when the poll was released.

In 2002, only 39% of all Americans said they had a favorable view of Muslims.

I did not notice them including a strict devout muslim that hates all not muslims and agrees with honor and the killing of infidels. I am going to write to TLC and complain. If they get enough, they will cancel this stupid show.

Statistically there are more crimimals in US and Canada then in any muslim country and that does not make everyone in us and canada bad. There are good and bad elements in every society. So stop being racist and biased. The only bad people here I see are people who judge and media who gives a biased view.

LOL How stupid can you be!!!

To do real statistics, all the crimes needs to be REPORTED.

In Islamic nations, crimes DON'T GET REPORTED either due to lack of a proper system or due to government lies.

I love when someone throws out the term STATISTICALLY SPEAKING like they know what they are talking about, when in fact it is based on nothing more than their own opinion with no backing whatsoever

  4. Same organs and flesh and blood

Reading these comments, just shows the ignorance in human race today. If this continues to grow the human race will be non existant.
Hatred in the blood and the society can cause irrational behaviors.
We are all made up of the same things: flesh, blood, hearts, organs, etc...
We all have special and unique different beliefs and values. Hating on a religon, how do you think that makes you look?
Not everyone is a terrorist. Theres been so many serial killers of all races. So who are you to judge?
You are brain washed my media and stereo typical when it comes to society issues. Need some education.

It would be nice to see Muslim Americans speak out more against the hatred of Muslim Extremists instead of being cowards and remaining silent. Then maybe you would see people having a little more respect.

Yes hatred in the blood aand society cause irrational behavior yep look at you Muslims. We hate your blood if you are not Muslim and we hate the western society because you are not Muslim. We are all made of the same things blood, organs, flesh Yes and the Muslims like to tie backpacks on women and children for them to blow all those things organs of innocent people all over the ground and buildings
Hating on a religion is fine, but Muslims carry it further they kill you if you hate their religion
No not everyone is a terrorist but it is a fact there are more terrorists and aspiring terrorists in the Muslim population than any other

How can there be educated but true believing Muslims?

The Qur'an teaches that the sun, like the moon, orbits the earth! (Q 21:33 and Q 36:40)

That the earth is flat with mountains simply placed on it (Q 15:19 – forget plate tectonics)!

That the sun goes down in a muddy lake surrounded by a mystery population (muddy sun worshipers?) Q 18:83-86

That sperm originates between the back and the ribs (Q 86:6-7 – didn't know what the testis were for)

The Qur'an only repeats the ignorance of the time and not one scientific truth :

More Quranic ignorance describe here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwMBOynKpXE&feature=related

The Qur'an and Muhammad are OBVIOUS frauds.

Jihadi Shore? Who Wants To Behead An Infidel? OK...now that I've got the jokes out my system...I'm sure this show will accurately portray the lives of American Muslims just as accurately as Jersey Shore portrays the lives of New Jersey Residents. You can't possibly do an honest reality series about (insert whatever cultural/ethnic sub-group you like here) and have it be accurate since people are individuals, and there are as many different outlooks on life and the world and culture as there are people living right now...

Mostly reality shows don't appeal to me because a lot of 'em are scripted with injections of false drama, etc., etc... This is a good idea if the participants don't play to the cameras and go on with their lives as if the lenses weren't there. Perhaps degrees of truth will show enough of how some Americans really are in spite of the well known prejudices...

Well at leat they keep the laundromats in business
with all those sheets and rags they wear
Muslims coming to your town you can not stop them
It is an invasion i tell you same as the Mexicans
The difference is the Mexicans are killing us with drugs
The Muslims will just kill you if you are not a Muslim. Muslim state they have one believe and if you are not of the same believe then you are nothing, you mean nothing, you are dirt and dirt is meant to be walked on. It is not a peacful religion, check out some of the videos of some of the Muslim parades they have had recently in Europe

Just what we need, a muslim reality series. What's next, "muslim women gone wild" where they will lift their veils and give us all a glimpse of how monkey butt ugly they really are?

Liberals, gays, latinos & afros love muslims becoz the biggest sin in islam is not believing in one God & that one will answer for one's sins unlike all the bigots who say "believe in christ & be redeemed" and go around doing the worst sins. The current day christians theory make everyone hell bound except themselves.
If God were to look down upon the most praying nation or the most fasting nation, it would be the muslims. And if americans truly hate muslims so much why use their oil from middle east or wear clothes from bangladesh & indonesia?

Hmmmm.... Sounds to me like you preach just as much hatred as you claim they do. Pathetic...

      July 24, 2011 at 10:36 am |

American are not the people who started this hatred stuff you know. It's not right to hate people from the middle east, especially if you ever want to take a cab ride in NYC. I do hate the fact that they all smell like monkey arm pits, and seem to be afraid to use soap or deodorant. It is not right to hate an entire race of people just because 95% of them are child molesting bigots and terrorists who lack the basic skills of personal hygiene.

For the show to be truly fair, the show must talk about the Koran passages describing hatred against infidels, killing of none believers, and the non-tolerance of other religions, otherwise it is not a reality show.

Sounds good. Then we can talk about the bible's passages stating slavery is ok, women and children are objects of ownership, and if there's time we can bring up the millions slaughtered under the guise of Christianity.

Before you go sweeping other folks' doorsteps you might want to worry about your own bud.

Heh... Maybe someone should go into the peaceful intentions of the Christian crusades, the destruction of native American civilization and culture, etc., etc....I think I have a "gotcha" here......

    • infidel

First of all I am not a bigot! The question is does the Koran teach viiolance against non believers, If the answer is yes then it should be presented on the show. Short and simple.

      July 24, 2011 at 11:04 am |
    • Pebbles

The bible says no such thing about woman or children and slavery was not the slavery that was the type that took place in the U.S. YOU are no biblical scholar and really should refrain from trying to sound like you know what you are talking about.
