My Take: Norway attacks show why you can't #blamethemuslims

Editor's Note: Imam Khalid Latif is a chaplain for New York University and Executive Director of the school's Islamic Center.

By Khalid Latif, Special to CNN

In the immediate aftermath of 1995’s Oklahoma City bombing, much of the news media rushed to suggest that a Muslim, or at least a Middle Eastern connection, was behind the attack.

News reports on television and in print featured Middle East terrorism experts claiming the Oklahoma City attack echoed a World Trade Center bombing two years earlier and that it contained parallels to recent Mideast attacks.

The FBI picked up Ibrahim Ahmad, a Jordanian American, for questioning in an initial dragnet.

Does 'Christian fundamentalist' label fit Norway terror suspect?

Of course, it turned out that the attacker was homegrown and named Timothy McVeigh, not a Muslim.

Sixteen years later, not much has changed.

The tragic events that took place in Norway on Friday provoked initial accusations against Muslims worldwide. Of course, that proved to be the farthest thing from the truth.

Anders Behring Breivik, the confessed bomber and shooter in this horrendous act, was not motivated by the teachings of Islam, but by the teachings of those who oppose Islam.

A 1,500-page manifesto that appears to be written by Breivik is an anti-Islamic tirade.

Who is Anders Behring Breivik?

“Since the creation of Islam in the 7th century and to up to this day, the Islamic Jihad has systematically killed more than 300 million non Muslims and tortured and enslaved more than 500 million individuals,” it says.

“Since 9/11 2001, more than 12, 000 Jihadi terrorist attacks have occurred,” it continues. “… This trend will continue as long as there are non-Muslim targets available and as long as Islam continues to exist.”

An inappropriate response to Norway’s acts of violence would be the condemnation of Christianity, or a claim that religion itself breeds violence and hatred, though the manifesto repeatedly invokes the defense of Christianity as a primary reason for violently defeating multiculturalism and combating the “Islamic colonization” of Europe.

The expectation shouldn't be that white Christian males should now be scrutinized at airports or profiled by TSA workers. It's wrong when it happens to Muslims and it would be just as wrong if it happened to anyone else.

A more appropriate response would be to expand the conversation around terrorism and violent extremism beyond Islam and the Muslim community. The Norway attacks highlight why congressional hearings should not be held on solely on radicalization in the Muslim community, but should focus on radicalization more broadly.

Far right makes comeback in Europe

It's also imperative that training for law enforcement and other governmental offices on Islamic doctrine and law not to be conducted by those who present the normative understanding of Islam to be something that is radical. Our focus should be the safety of all citizens in any country from every act of violence or terrorism.

By cultivating a narrative that says Islam is the problem, we keep ourselves from maintaining that focus. All terrorist acts stem from an idea that it's OK to resort to violence in order to get what you want; that it's OK to kill to get the kind of world that you would like; that if we disagree, we cannot co-exist peacefully.

Over the weekend, #blamethemuslims became a trending topic on Twitter. The purpose of the hashtag was not to blame Muslims for the Norway attack, but show how Muslims are unfairly blamed and singled out regularly these days. The tragic events in Norway remind us that not all terrorists are Muslim and there is no reason that all Muslims should be treated like they are.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Norway. May God make things easy for them and grant us all the strength and courage to stand up against those who preach intolerance and hatred, even if they look like us, align politically with us, or practice the same religion we practice.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Khalid Latif.

One point that I would like to make is that normal Islam doesn't promote violence. All we see are just the radicalized ones who twist their religion. Most terrorism is caused by Muslims, but these are not normal Muslims. Islam itself is misunderstood. Some Christians promote hatred and violence too even though it is against their religion. You can't judge Christians for this and you can't judge all Muslims for what extremists do either. Some people on both sides promote hatred. However, hating back only creates more hatred. One problem is that most people don't understand Islam. The so-called "danger of Islam" is really the "danger of Islamic extremism".

Really just do not understand if you did not need all those Muslims or non Muslims immigrants into your countries from the first place....!!! What has changed that now ?
If you do not want other nations out number you in your land,it is either you should not allow immigration or make new laws as to Divorce and Marriages beside taking into consideration allowing polygamy if permited by the first female partner whether she is well giving birth or sick unable to give birth... You cannot go on wiping reducing nations every time they exceed your populations ??!

Muslims is a General word that includes every Muslim from every continent on the Globe?? That is way you should take Muslims bases their race origin and not by the bases of their Religious beliefs, what ever their acts were criminal or religious extremes...but it is not fair to generalize since may there be Muslims from your own skins or race origins...

Her fellow villagers in Bangladesh's Shariatpur district had already passed harsh judgment on her. Guilty, they said, of having an affair with a married man. So if there is one (1) non-Muslim outsider and there are 364 Muslims on the other days of the year, who blow other people up who don't want to be blown up, that proves, you can't blame Muslims? Look into the newspaper man, it starts getting boring when there is not at least one Islam founded suicide attack per day. An angry book win written encouraging, allowing and blessing to kill non-believers (that is killing Jews, Christians and basically any other non-Muslim), that's the problem on this planet!

CNN needs some opinion writers who are not dishonest anti-Christian dolts.

The man did not follow the teachings of Christ and is not a Christian according to the words of Jesus Christ. Jesus said if you do not follow his teachings you are not his. Period. In my opinion anyone who calls the man a Christian is either ignorant of the Bible or a willful liar.

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

1Jn 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Jesus taught us to love everyone, even our enemies. Not to kill them. The Bible says anyone who claims to know God but who hates or murders is a liar.

    Mat 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

1Jn 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

1Jn 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

Mr article writer, according to the Bible the man who killed all those kids did not know God. He is a liar in calling himself a Christian. He hates people and he murders and he does not live according to the core teachings of Christianity.

Mat 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

No once in the New Testament can you cite an instance for a call to violence against people.

The article writer's religion, Islam, has constantly called for violence and infidels are to be killed according to the Qu'ran if they won't convert to Islam or pay tribute.

I can put the same argument forward for those killing in the name of Islam. The Quran nor does God accept killing of people period. The Quran and Islam teaches about tolerance and coexistence. There is a Surah (chapter) in the Quran specifically saying that 'you have your faith and I have mine'.

"Thou shall not kill" – does that mean that you do not consider USA, Bush, etc., christian? They kill incessantly in so many wars.

This word "terrorist" is designed to strike fear in people How about just calling him an INSANE NUT. The same way we would label Jeffery Dahmer, or Charles Manson. By referring to such people as "terrorists" you can further categorize that it's part of the "War on Terror," which is simply a fabricated name that Bush and others used to justify invading other countries.

What a pile of c rap. So this guy was motivated by teachings of others who are anti-islam. This guy didn't go to any church and doesn't claim to be a "Christian". He is a nationalist and that is not a religion. I don't know of anything in the Jewish or Christian Bibles or writings, or in the writings of the Pope or of any Jewish, Wiccan, or Christian leader that says to blow away a bunch of kids on a camping trip, or even to blow away a Muslim. According to the fatwas issued by dozens of leading Muslims, Islam is at war with everybody else and everyone is fair game. There is an article on this site that describes the Muslim Taliban forcing some little kid to step on a bomb. So much for the teachings of Islam.

Wow buddy, you are one ignorant person.
You have the audacity to compare the Taliban's practices and backward-ness with the ENTIRE Muslim Population? Seriously go educate yourself with the teachings of ISLAM before you write about what islam does and does not teach. Islam actually endorses the teachings of both Jesus & Moses...so how are you going to claim Muslims are at war with Christians & Jews alike?
Why is it so difficult for the general population to hear the term christian terrorist? Why are you on the defensive end saying Breivik isn't a real Christian? He doesn't belong to a church etc. But yet you are SO quick to accuse the entire muslim population of practicing taliban ideologies? Hypocrite.
Muslims, who correctly follow Islam were disgusted with 9/11, and all terror attacks including suicide bombs, in fact its the relgion's biggest sin to commit suicide. So please, do us all a favour and educate yourself before you contribute your two cents (which happens to be crap and false statements). Pathetic.

So the premise of this story is that if 99% of terrorist acts are committed by Muslims but 1 person who isn't a Muslim perpetrates an attack, suddenly we can't conclude that terrorism is mostly a Muslim thing? Wow that is one nutty way of looking at things!

What instigated the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon? And what drives today's 24/7 mosque/imam-driven acts of terror and horror? The koran, Mohammed's book of death for all infidels and Muslim domination of the world by any means.

Muslims must clean up this book removing said passages admitting that they are based on the Gabriel myth and therefore obviously the hallucinations and/or lies of Mohammed.

Then we can talk about the safety and location of mosques and what is taught therein. Until then, no male Muslim can be trusted anytime or anywhere..................................

Ah, so by that logic can we blame this Norway terror attack on the BIble? Mainstream Muslim and Christian leaders condemn terrorism.

Why do you liberals and media try to equate ONE NUT as part of a Christian plan to promote terror. YOU HAVE TO BE STUPID TO BELIEVE YOUR IDIOCY THAT THIS IS THE SAME AS MUSLIN TERROR. YOU MUST TAKE US FOR ABSOLUTE MORONS. GET OFF IT–AND QUIT YOUR LYING. WE WANT TRUTH AND OBJECTIVE NEWS –NOT THIS CRAP AS THIS ARTICLE PROMOTES !
