Poll: 52 percent approve of God’s job performance

By John Blake, CNN

(CNN) - If you think voters are in cranky mood over politics, a new poll suggests that some of the dissatisfaction may run deeper.

God’s job performance has trouble measuring up to many Americans' expectations, according to a poll by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm based in North Carolina.

Only 52 percent of Americans approve of God’s job performance, the survey found, though just 9 percent disapprove.

The polling question that prompted this curious response was, "If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its performance?"

"When asked to evaluate God on some of the issues it is responsible for, voters give God its best rating on creating the universe, 71-5," the polling report said. "They also approve of its handling of the animal kingdom 56-11, and even its handling of natural disasters 50-13."

Dino Grandoni cited the poll in a blog for the  Atlantic Wire:

On the bright side for the Almighty's re-election chances, God is still more popular than House Speaker John Boehner and both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, all of whom polled at 33 percent in the same poll.

(snip)

Believers or not, it seems ridiculous for the public to categorically grade God like this, until you realize that it's pollsters who asked the questions in the first place

Public Policy Polling used automated telephone interviews to survey 928 American voters from July 15 to 17. The voters were represented by a mix of liberal, moderate and conservative voters. The poll's margin of error  was +/-3.2%.

For people who say we shouldn't judge God: Is God responsible for his creation? If he is then he is doing a horrible job. If no then why praise someone who doesn't even care about you?

This survey would be only marginally relevant if god existed.

I find it quite stupid that the same redundant arguments are being made on these religion threads, with no progress being made toward either side. It seems like CNN posts these articles just to get people worked up and firing insults at each other; insulting intelligence, race, and social status. Stop taking the bait and live your life in love.

I dissagree.... that people should stop taking the bait.
I really enjoy reading all these comments.
All it is are the crazy atheists telling all the theists that they're stupid and wrong and all the theists telling the atheists that they're going to burn in he11 and that they're the ones who are stupid and wrong.
It's all very amusing and helps make my workday go by faster.

This is ridiculous! A poll on God's job performance? Incredible! God has already done His job and continues to do so. It is us "humans" who have failed God. Our humann job performance with the creation He has provided us is 0%. We have failed to honor God, failed to repect one another, failed to maintain the earth, failed to love one another, failed, failed, failed, failed, FAILED!! Just look around and what do you see? Failure by humanity NOT God. Get a grip people!

The ignorance is ENORMOUS! By what standard are people using to judge God? Who can judge him, he's ways are not our ways, and his thoughts higher than our thoughts. Why are people so quick to blame God for everything bad in the world, but fail to give him credit for all the mercy and grace that he has given to us? GOD IS GOOD, RIGHTEOUS, OMNIPOTENT, GRACIOUS, FULL MERCY, LOVE, LONGSUFFERING, KIND, GENTLE, TRIUMPHANTAND VICTORIOUS, HOLY AND PURE, FAITHFUL, GIVING, TRUSTWORTHY, A FATHER, A MOTHER, A FRIEND! HE IS EVERYTHING TO ME AND MUCH MUCH MORE! Don't talk about someone you've never met!

      > The ignorance is ENORMOUS! By what standard are people using to judge God? Who can judge him, he's ways are not our ways, and his thoughts higher than our thoughts.

Because he says they are? How about this then. My thoughts are higher then yours, so therefore you have no right to question my answers. You had better accept them just because this text tells you so.

      > Why are people so quick to blame God for everything bad in the world, but fail to give him credit for all the mercy and grace that he has given to us?

I'm sorry that you're so muddled in your thinking. There is no good credit. You don't get to commit evil acts simply because you did some good things a while ago. A good God, a God worthy of worship would not want it. Only a childish, self centered and idiotic God would want worship from it's own creations.

      > GOD IS GOOD,

He's so good he condemns people to hell for simply being born (original sin) and ensured that Adam and Eve would commit the sin.

      > RIGHTEOUS,

So righteous he thought it was worthwhile to put a man through torture to settle a bet with Satan.

      > OMNIPOTENT,

All powerful necessitates all knowing. All knowing and he being your creator means you don't have free will.

      > GRACIOUS,

So gracious that he'd burn you forever for not believing in him.

      > FULL MERCY,

Not to the children in Africa who are starving.

      > LOVE,

      Not to those in hell.

      > LONGSUFFERING,

      God doesn't suffer.

      > KIND, GENTLE,

So kind that he forced a father to consider the option of killing his son as a sacrifice.

      > TRIUMPHANTAND VICTORIOUS,

If he's omnipotent I'd certainly hope so.

      > HOLY AND PURE,

By his own definition, yes. God is Godlike? What a concept!

      > FAITHFUL,

Yes, because God clearly didn't abandon his people many times to teach them a lesson. Oh wait, he did.

      > GIVING,

      Children in africa again.

      > TRUSTWORTHY,

So trustworthy that he often has to trick his own people?

      > A FATHER, A MOTHER, A FRIEND!

No father, mother or friend would send you into eternal torture for doing something as minor as not loving you back.

      > HE IS EVERYTHING TO ME AND MUCH MUCH MORE! Don't talk about someone you've never met!

And yet you do? You've never met God. You only think you have.

Vonnie, I'm not sure where the idea of a merciful, benevolent God comes from, but it's not the Bible. He wiped out everyone on the planet except for Noah and his immediate family because supposedly all the other men. women, children, babies, and unborn were too wicked to live. He sent countless plagues to torment the Egyptians, whose only sin was having a cruel leader, then murdered all their firstborn. After which, on Mt. Sinai, he dictates in great length to how to build a lavish temple in his honor, filled with gold and ornate tapestries. He killed 70,000 men because he was upset with David for taking a census. I'm glad he doesn't exist; I would never worship such an egotistical murdering dictator.

      My Dear "The Bobinator"
I have good news for you. Even in your blasphemous soul there is forgiveness for you also. I am fully persuaded that I serve the one, true and LIVING GOD. You could NEVER EVER convince me otherwise. I don't debate "religion", because the word of God is already settled in Heaven and in the Earth. The work of the cross has already been completed. I pray mercy for your troubled soul.
