Poll: 52 percent approve of God’s job performance

By John Blake, CNN

(CNN) - If you think voters are in cranky mood over politics, a new poll suggests that some of the dissatisfaction may run deeper.

God’s job performance has trouble measuring up to many Americans' expectations, according to a poll by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm based in North Carolina.

Only 52 percent of Americans approve of God’s job performance, the survey found, though just 9 percent disapprove.

The polling question that prompted this curious response was, "If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its performance?"

"When asked to evaluate God on some of the issues it is responsible for, voters give God its best rating on creating the universe, 71-5," the polling report said. "They also approve of its handling of the animal kingdom 56-11, and even its handling of natural disasters 50-13."

Dino Grandoni cited the poll in a blog for the  Atlantic Wire:

On the bright side for the Almighty's re-election chances, God is still more popular than House Speaker John Boehner and both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, all of whom polled at 33 percent in the same poll.

(snip)

Believers or not, it seems ridiculous for the public to categorically grade God like this, until you realize that it's pollsters who asked the questions in the first place

Public Policy Polling used automated telephone interviews to survey 928 American voters from July 15 to 17. The voters were represented by a mix of liberal, moderate and conservative voters. The poll's margin of error  was +/-3.2%.

Why on earth is this newsworthy? Why does CNN continuously legitimize this ridiculous belief in a supreme being? Stop endorsing religion and report real world stories!!!!!!!

People believing in worshiping is a REAL STORY. Would you rather read about radical islamist blowing people up...?

@jeff bertram, um, because this is a blog about religion? for real world stories, please refer to the main CNN website? and obviously, some people want this blog, if even just so that we may all vent, and so that atheists and believers can continue to argue are prove that they are right over the other.

truth be told, i actually feel the same as you, but at the end of the day, both you and i ended up reading this and taking the time to comment, thus legitimizing the existence of this blog... so, not really CNN's fault.

So your intention when you clicked the link that brought you here was only and simply to complain and whine about this news article? If you don't like how someone is doing their job don't whine and do it yourself.

So what's your point? Religion kills or in the case of catholics molests. What god would allow mass murder in his name and why would you worship such a being?

Because He gave us free will, and we've used it to f*** things up on earth.
WE have messed things up, not God.

The God who got tired of ruling the universe from afar so he zaps down some of his DNA into a 13 year old virgin to make sure everyone knows the pregnancy must be from God, pushes himself out as newborn then disappears for 30 years then re-appears, then walks around lecturing barefoot for 3 years, then fake kills himself to lift the curse that he himself put on mankind back in the garden days, then comes back from the dead 3 days later to prove he was the God who fake killed himself then immediately disappears never to be seen again.

What? What's not believable about that?

Wow, you have absolutely no understanding of Christianity or religion in general. That is usually due to a pure unwillingness to learn.

jesusISlord: what is unbelievable is your pompousness. no, that is far too believable. cultural self-flaggelation to imply piety....i'm a sinner, jesus, whip me. strike me on the bum...i've been a bad boy...hit me hard and often....

A more interesting poll would be : what percentage of Americans think that God approves of their "job performance."

No matter what flavor of God you believe in, or even if you're not a believer at all, most people are sorely lacking when it comes to things like loving/helping one's fellow man, being kind to those around them, working hard and living within their means, putting the needs of others (and especially spouses/children) ahead of one's own petty, selfish wants, etc.

Religion's purpose is not to condemn and persecute non-believers : it's a way of explaining how we nuture that which makes us more than mere animals. A responsible, moral, "good" atheist (and they do exist), is fulfilling God's will even if they don't realize it.

    July 27, 2011 at 4:05 pm |
    • Mister Jones

Whether or not it's the "purpose" of religion, it is definitely a side-effect. Billions dead and counting. Your "way of explanation" has killed more people than cancer.

      July 27, 2011 at 4:10 pm |
    • Chris

@ Mister Jones. Billions? Really? It may be time to learn math. More have died under "Godless" regimes than in all the Holy Wars you want to point at. The fact is, man likes to subjugate other men for power and will kill others to do it. What you don't understand is that at least when true religion is practiced (not a perversion twisted by Satan) man has a moral compass to help him do what is right.

      July 27, 2011 at 4:22 pm |
    • Mister Jones

@Chris, yes billions. I am counting all of the wars, the Spanish Inquistions, the Salem Witch Trials, the Crusades, every missionary who brought any disease to an indiginous people, the persecution of scientists such as Galileo, Sir Isaac Newton and Archimedes, all executions ordered by royalty that uses a church backing, religious sacrifices to please the gods, all religious based terrorist attacks, etc. Are you suggesting that in all of these examples, Satan was at work and your god did nothing? Religion is religion. That is the central theme that I am displaying here.
