Poll: 52 percent approve of God’s job performance

By John Blake, CNN

(CNN) - If you think voters are in cranky mood over politics, a new poll suggests that some of the dissatisfaction may run deeper.

God’s job performance has trouble measuring up to many Americans' expectations, according to a poll by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm based in North Carolina.

Only 52 percent of Americans approve of God’s job performance, the survey found, though just 9 percent disapprove.

The polling question that prompted this curious response was, "If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its performance?"

"When asked to evaluate God on some of the issues it is responsible for, voters give God its best rating on creating the universe, 71-5," the polling report said. "They also approve of its handling of the animal kingdom 56-11, and even its handling of natural disasters 50-13."

Dino Grandoni cited the poll in a blog for the  Atlantic Wire:

On the bright side for the Almighty's re-election chances, God is still more popular than House Speaker John Boehner and both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, all of whom polled at 33 percent in the same poll.

(snip)

Believers or not, it seems ridiculous for the public to categorically grade God like this, until you realize that it's pollsters who asked the questions in the first place

Public Policy Polling used automated telephone interviews to survey 928 American voters from July 15 to 17. The voters were represented by a mix of liberal, moderate and conservative voters. The poll's margin of error  was +/-3.2%.

Any Empirical Evidence to back up your claim of a god creating the earth???

      July 27, 2011 at 1:18 pm |
    • nope, still no gods!

books man books, it all about the books! Books that god told men to write, and that men told people that god told them to write. Therefore it must all be true!

      July 27, 2011 at 1:20 pm |
    • OnLooker

Do you have any empirical evidence to prove that God DOESN'T exist? Not the nature of God, but a mere creator of all the universe.

funny article, what is the approval rate of santa claus? The easter bunny? Oh oh I know. . .How about that thieving tooth fairy, who likes her? I find it hard to believe that cnn caters to those with imaginary friend syndrome. Must be a slow news day or something. gods, there are none!

Just a matter of time before the 48% put 2 and 2 together and wake up to reality.

    July 27, 2011 at 1:12 pm |
    • nope, still no gods!

you would think that be true, but the human mind has such an amazing talent to totally ignore the truth and continue to be irrational and believe in fairy tales. Some day these fables will probably be gone from the earth, we will probably not be here to see unfortunately but perhaps it will get better. There are still no gods!

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written,
“I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE,
AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE.”

Even if you do not believe it 2+2=4. There is a living God and you will stand before him in judgement one day. God is not some cosmic vending machine that we can manipulate to serve us, it is up to us to seek his will and to serve him.

Sylan the biggest thing to realize is this: Everyone knows the signs held up during football games, etc.. John3:16 which speaks about believing in God's son Jesus for salvation, but the next verse shows Gods heart. Yes we will stand before him in judgement, but not in condemnation if we have accepted God's free gift of salvation achieved through Christ's death on the cross. "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." John 3:17. God Bless you Sylvan I pray that you will one day surrender the reigns to him.:)

Brilliant, using a mathematical equation to prove a bronze age myth.

You either believe in God and Jesus or you don't. IF you do, surveys such as this are meaningless and merely serve to give audience to those who are angry or choose to belittle others for their belief. IF you don't believe in God, then you've made your choice but stating the Catholic Church is about control or that believers don't have brains is nothing more than trying to make yourself feel right about your non belief. As someone with a scientific brain and who has had every reason NOT to believe in God, I can only quote something my Grandfather left to me before his passing: Believe as you will be this house shall follow the Lord. It's simple to us who believe and asinine to you who don't.

We were told by Jesus that we would be laughed at, scoffed at, and worse by our belief in Him. That is so true and evident in the postings on this page today.

But, what do I know. I'm "just" a believer.

      -----------–

Actually you were told by men. You just make the leap to believe what they say. Your faith starts with man and his written word.

How about polling people about how they think they have bettered the world? How about polling people onthe things they have consistently done to help the world be a better place? How about polling people on what needs of the world they have ignored because they like their modern comforts?

This poll made me laugh it is so ridiculous. That people are so arrogant that they think they can rate Gods "performance" is pretty sad Anyone trying to say God did something bad should first fess up to all the mistakes they've made in life, all of their hypocripsy and all of their personal prejudice, and then we can judge if they are qualified to judge a Holy God.

It says more about the % of the population that beleives in God than it does his approval rate. If you believe in God you will saying he's doing a great job. If you do not, he's doing a poor job. Its a poll with only extreme answers. It tells me 52% of the people polled beleive in a diety.

This poll is fantastic. We need to stop concerning ourselves with nonsense like climate change and terrorism and start focusing on the real issue: Jesus. I personally think Jesus is doing an awesome job with our nation. We are the smartest and most loved nation on the planet because we are the only Christian nation. Jesus will keep giving us everything we need as long as we vote for intelligent and tolerant people such as Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin. President Obama is pure evil and it has already been proven by scientists that he is a Muslim.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that makes it difficult to tell the difference between real and unreal experiences, to think logically, to have normal emotional responses, and to behave normally in social situations.
As the illness continues, psychotic symptoms develop:
      • False beliefs or thoughts that are not based in reality (delusions)
      • Hearing, seeing, or feeling things that are not there (hallucinations)
