Israeli ambassador to U.S. hosts Ramadan dinner

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - The Israeli ambassador to the United States hosted a dinner celebrating the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Thursday, marking the first time an ambassador from the Jewish state has hosted such a dinner in the United States, the embassy said.

Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren hosted the dinner at his residence, with about 65 guests in attendance, including imams, rabbis and officials from the White House, Congress and the State Department, according to Israeli Embassy spokesman Lior Weintraub.

Oren said the unusual dinner is fitting at a time when the future of the Middle East is uncertain, as the Arab Spring has unseated regimes in Tunisia and Egypt and as Libya appears poised on the brink of a revolution.

“We’re in the middle of a huge transition in the Middle East, and we see risks, but we also see opportunities there,” he said. “We want to be able to tell people in the Middle East what those opportunities are.”

“There’s a lot of misinformation about Israel, and we want to show we’re open to dialogue and reconciliation,” he said. “We can begin to build bridges on an interpersonal level.”

In remarks at the dinner, Oren cited the biblical Book of Psalms: "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity."

Thursday’s Ramadan dinner, called an iftar, featured a call to prayer, during which the dining room at the ambassador’s residence was turned into a Muslim prayer space, the embassy said.

All food served at the meal was halal, meaning it has been prepared according to certain Muslim customs. The meal was prepared under the direction of a Muslim chef, the embassy said.

The fast was broken with traditional Islamic foods like dates, apricot juice and soup.

The dinner's guests included Dennis Ross, a White House adviser on the Middle East; State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland; Farah Pandith, the State Department's first special representative to Muslim communities; and Hannah Rosenthal, state's special envoy to monitor and combat anti-semitism.

Oren said he hopes the meal at the Israeli ambassador’s residence becomes an annual tradition.

“Israel has a very large and vibrant Muslim population, with Muslim members of the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) and in science and academics, and I’m their ambassador as well,” Oren said. “This is very much a state function for us, not just about reaching out.”

The ambassador said he was heartened about prospects for Jewish and Muslim cooperation when his wife visited an Israeli hospital last week for an emergency appendectomy, with the operation and the recovery overseen by Jewish and Muslim doctors and nurses working together.

Oren said he saw medical staff “acting on the basis of common humanity, without any distinction over faith. … Everyone there was an example of how it can be.”

The iftar dinner comes at a time of heightened tensions between Israel and much of the Muslim world, with a rash of violence between Israel and the Palestinians in the past week and the Palestinian Authority preparing to make a bid for statehood in the United Nations next month.

Iftar dinners are held during Ramadan to break the daily fast.

President Barack Obama hosted an iftar dinner at the White House this month, a tradition that dates to President Bill Clinton.

Once again, it is the Israelis who hold out an olive branch. When's the last time that a representative from a Middle Eastern country hosted a Jewish event...........never.

Dinak. As the ambassador states in the article, which you either did not read properly or just did not understand, this dinner was an occasion to acknowledge the customs of Israelis who happen to be Muslim. This was not Jews holding out an olive branch to Muslims–this was an Israeli leader (the ambassador) respecting the customs of his nation's OWN people...so please think before you make everything Jews versus Muslims.

Andy: As the ambassador states in the article, which you either did not read properly or just did not understand, this dinner was an occasion to acknowledge the customs of Muslims. ALL Muslims. It is possible that you do not realize that there are 1.4 million Muslims in Israel and 1.4 BILLION Muslims in the world... so please think before you speak.

A simple solution will solve 50% trouble in the ME and thus around the world. Give Palestine a state and solve the land issue.
Palestines are going to propose a state in the UN. US is going to veto it for Israel. The result is same as last 50 years. We will involve in wars and our sons/daughters will die at the cost of our trillions of dollars thus making us bankrupt.

    August 28, 2011 at 7:44 am |
    • Thinker23

A sovereign independent state was offered to Palestinian Arabs in 1948, 1967, 1978, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2009 and they've REJECTED it every single time. Israel can OFFER them peace and a state but it CAN NOT shove it into the Palestinian collective throat against their will. Besides, a state was "given" to them already 6 years ago when Israel fully withdrew from Gaza. Are you sure that it solved the problem?

Reality did post a rather pungent eulogy to me on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 4:17 pm blintly stating, "As a good student, you have read the reiterations of the "fems" (flaws, errors, muck and stench) of religion. Therefore the seeds have been planted in rich soil. Go therefore and preach the truth to all nations, reiterating as you go amongst the lost, bred, born and brainwashed souls of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism as rational thinkin makes its triumphant return all because of you!!!!"

Such barbarism becomes only but a foible of dastardism's wastelands. BTW, here's a F.L.A.S.H. fer you. Fear is the temptress bequeethed upon the tempter, Love is the narrowdeness roadway, Anger does show forth one's cunninglessness, while Sadness bemoans those who hurt themselves and others and Happiness is the great equalizer among friends of a feather.

    Unquote.

Is it actually possible that in a civliized county like the USA people eat halal food?

Everybody knows that halal meat is produced by ritual slaughter, which is brutal animal torture.

Slaughter is slaughter Rainer and it makes no difference of it being a "slit' throat or a slug in the brain although the latter might be more humane but at what cost? My aunt did chop off her son's chickens heads with an axe. Like I said, slaughter is slaughter and a necessary evil and as our being meat eaters what say you Rainer B. I am but a Pennsyvania born country man/child, raised with rabbits and chickens to be ate and sold off. Never did I know of any other way to "slaughter" things of meatiness such as cows, or bulls, of pigs etc. Maybe Halal is a better way to "do it". Ya think so Muneef?

      Winged Lion.

I spoke the truth about it... Draining out the blood of the slaughtered animal is the main thing about HALAL meat...but some were saying that the animal should be knocked out unconscious before slaughtering out of mercy but the problem the heart will not pump out the blood if the animal was knocked out unconscious or if drugged..and that will maintain the blood in the body unreleased...and specially that now so many medical substances are used in bringing up these animals beside the other contamination's will be transferred to the eater of such meats that are not referred to as not HALAL...

      Fresh Halal Meat

Dhabh ensures the quality, cleaness and safety of the fresh Halal Meat. The objective of the Islamic slaughter is to ensure maximal blood drainage from the animal as Muslim belief blood is a good culture medium for microorganisms to flourish. Having ensure that the blood vessels of the animal is severed correctly to allow for swift bleeding, the Muslim slaughterer must be careful not to cut the animal’s spinal cord. Failing so, this precaution would damage the nerve fibres to the heart, causing cardiac arrest, stagnating the blood in the blood vessels, thus further exacerbate the problem of microorganism invasion.

      @ Muneef

You are trying too hard, and really you are trying to resolve the issue by presenting the health and social implications. You dont have to be so apologetic, its analagous to Prophet Abraham asking god how throwing himself in a brazen fire would positively affect the society ? What impact would it have on the community..

Well, he is further required by god to sacrifice his own son! Did he go, yeah I love Islam but this whole idea of killing my son, can you please expend on what the benefits are ?

The answer is No, since the lesson to be drawn from these instances is that as muslims we have chosen to submit our will to the creator of the heavens and the earth. If he has made pork inedible for us, we obey. Questioning in islam is encouraged but the question should be pertinent to the fundamentals of faith..

Every thing happens for a reason and reason has to be explained to who do not know when questioned and it is not right to say it is just like this whether you like it or not....!?! Another thing what ever effort I make or be as, is accounted for GOD sake and not any thing else....! Prophet Abraham was instructed by GOD to test his faith and submission and when Abraham did not hesitate,GOD has made him the alternative...Prophet Abraham knew and experienced the power of GOD in bringing life to the dead..when was tested with Birds that he had slaughtered by him self and distributed in pieces to tops of various mountains and when he called them as instructed by GOD to call them, the birds came back in one piece as were...!

We should change the name of the Muslim belief from Islam to 9/11-belief.

    Why?

Terror and aggressive war are not a side issue of Islam, but belong to the core tenets of Islam. Thus, 9/11 was an ordinary act of Islamic life of faith. The Al-Quaida fighters, which destroyed the Twin Towers were exemplary Muslims, according to the doctrine of Muhammad. Assumed, Muhammad would still be alive, he would praise the 9/11 terrorists for their deeds.

We should stop to distinguish between Islam and Islamists. That is a nonsense. Terror belongs to Islam. Terror is natural for the Islam. An so-called Islamist is a model Muslim in Muhammad's eyes.

Although the Islamíc beast still tortures the mankind, a new beast, which is even more dangerous, emerges:

Some decades ago it was not thinkable that people protest against the "Holy Father" anywhere. Now, even in Spain, which is actually an arch-Catholic country people protest against the Pope. Surveys show that Spain becomes more and more a profane country (both the government and the population). September the Pope will come to Germany. Yet now people have announced to protest against him.

At the one hand I am glad that the wh-ore (Roman Catholic Church) declines, on the other hand I suppose that with decreasing influence of the wh-ore, the influence of the Beast will increase.

    What is the Beast?

The Beast is a community of absolutely profane or godless states. This community, led by the Wicked or Arch-Blasphemer, will finally worship the Wicked instead of God. The Beast will fully reveal the depravity of the human flesh, which is not damped down by faith. The inhabitants of the community of the Beast will indeed behave like little beasts. They will act according to their basest instincts like their ruler the Arch-Blasphemer.

Assumed, I would claim this solely on the basis of biblical prophecy, one could question my statement. But it is not only the Bible, but the ongoing societal development, which confirms my statement.

How can we escape the Beast and the Arch-Blasphemer?

Come under the shelter of Kyrios Jesus! He is Lord of all Lords and King of all Kings. He will finally kill the Blasphemer.

Jesus Christ has borne your sins on the cross, in order to set you free for a righteous life. He can set you free for a life of Christian love. God is love.

Mark 16: 15-16: And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

"shall be saved" doesn't mean a cost-free ticket to heaven, but cost-free power for living a righteous life in love.

Believe in Christ and get born by water an Spirit!

How many more are in the otherly lands of the World? Judaic-Christians are but a smalled Lot within the hand of Centrist Jews who bay ever so dlilgently their howlings at leftists and right-sided Judaicisms. It is a good thing and worthy of praises. 12. John 6:25-40

25 When they found Him(Jesus) on the other side of the lake, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”
28 Then they asked Him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One hHe has sent.”
30 So they asked Him, “What sign then will You give that we may see it and believe You? What will You do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the Bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen Me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do My will but to do the will of Him who sent Me. 39 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of all those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

Lambly, Jesus is fully God and fully Man. It is a revealed Truth. You need to read the whole Bible, not just this passage. Read the Bible. Jesus addressed Himself as the Son of Man for two reasons: He came to Earth to die for us becoming flesh just like us, though He is sinless, and to show humility that we would follow Him.

If one is truly of a “literal” understanding, Our Christ Jesus is the Son Of ‘a’ GOD and the child of a woman named Mary. To say that our Lord of Redemption for one‘s spirited soul, Christ Jesus is quite literally not a “son of man” and such cannot be fulfilled until His 2nd coming where He will be born by the seed of a man implanting the womb of a woman.

It is Truth Johanna that He, our Lord and redeemer of lost souls, Christ Jesus was born in aged times to fulfill the old Hebraic scripture so that the “world” might be saved and in His dying He did pay the price in order to be the rightness defender in the Heaven of the heavens which is where we in soulful spiritedness do go when we die in this world of the Celestialness of HEAVEN’s Laments. To say otherwise can be considered as a consecration of prejudicial blasphemy.

Actually, Jesus was a bit "touched". After all he thought he spoke to Satan, thought he changed water into wine, thought he raised Lazarus from the dead etc. In today's world, said Jesus would be declared legally insane.

Or did P, M, M, L and J simply make him into a first century magic-man via their epistles and gospels of semi-fiction? Most contemporary NT experts after thorough analyses of all the scriptures go with the latter magic-man conclusion with John's gospels being mostly fiction.

Obviously, today's followers of Paul et al's "magic-man" are also a bit on the odd side believing in all the Christian mumbo jumbo about bodies resurrecting, and exorcisms, and miracles, and "magic-man atonement, and infallible, old, European/Utah white men, and 24/7 body/blood sacrifices followed by consumption of said sacrifices. Yummy!!!!

So why do we really care what a first century CE, insane, illiterate, long-dead, preacher man would do or say?

@ Reality the nerd of his word,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,You oh conscripted general of continuating one's duo-geneticsms of constantly reposting the same old narcissistic dribble over and over and over! Such mindlessness gets quite old! Can't you just write what's on your mindleessness without always rehashing your priorness dribblings?

As a good student, you have read the reiterations of the "fems" (flaws, errors, muck and stench) of religion. Therefore the seeds have been planted in rich soil. Go therefore and preach the truth to all nations, reiterating as you go amongst the lost, bred, born and brainwashed souls of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism as rational thinkin makes its triumphant return all because of you!!!!

Good job! It's good to feed Gentiles when they are hungry. Both Jews and Gentiles need the Bread of Life – Jesus.

If anyone HAS Jesus it's the Jews. After all, Jesus was one of them.

Ramadan is part of the global and infamous Angelic Con:-----------------

Mohammed had his Gabriel of the topic Ramadan con(this "tin-kerbell" got around).

Joe Smith had his Moroni. "Latter-day Saints also believe that Michael the Archangel was Adam (the first man) when he was mortal, and Gabriel lived on the earth as Noah."

    Jehovah Witnesses have their Jesus /Michael the archangel, the first angelic being created by God;

Jesus and his family had Michael, Gabriel, and Satan, the latter being a modern day dem-on of the de-mented.

The Abraham-Moses myths had their Angel of Death and other "no-namers" to do their dirty work or other assorted duties.

Contemporary biblical and religious scholars have relegated these "pretty wingie, horn blowing thingies" to the myth pile. We should do the same to include deleting all references to them in our religious operating manuals. Doing this will eliminate the prophet/profit/prophecy status of these founders and put them where they belong as simple humans just like the rest of us.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful, The Moon Gods
Lo! We revealed it on the Night of Power. (1) Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is! (2) The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. (5)And We allow them to running naked around their idol the black basalt stone and they are scream "Eureka"..i found it..i found it..and Lo! yet they don't understand what they had found.
