Glenn Beck: Hurricane Irene is a 'blessing'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

Conservative radio host Glenn Beck told listeners Friday that Hurricane Irene, the Category 1 storm that’s working its deadly way up the Eastern Seaboard, is “a blessing from God.”

Beck has long urged his fans to stockpile food in their homes in anticipation of a global food disruption. He said Irene should be construed as a divine warning for those who have ignored that advice.

Here’s Beck on his show Friday:

How many warnings do you think you’re going to get, and how many warnings do you deserve? This hurricane that is coming thorough the East Coast, for anyone who’s in the East Coast and has been listening to me say ‘Food storage!’ ‘Be prepared!’

… If you’ve waited, this hurricane is a blessing. It is a blessing. It is God reminding you — as was the earthquake last week — it’s God reminding you you’re not in control. Things can happen. Be prepared and be someone who can help others so when disaster strikes, God forbid, you’re not panicking.

The Washington Post reports that in encouraging home stockpiling, Beck, a convert to Mormonism, is echoing Mormon church teaching. The church encourages members to build home storehouses of food that could last for at least three months.

According to a website run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the official name of the Mormon church:

Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful earth, with all its abundance, for our benefit and use. His purpose is to provide for our needs as we walk in faith and obedience. He has lovingly commanded us to “prepare every needful thing”… so that, should adversity come, we can care for ourselves and our neighbors and support bishops as they care for others.

The site includes a food storage calculator. To build a three-month supply of food for a family of four, the calculator recommends 300 pounds of “wheat, white rice, corn and other grains” and 60 pounds of “dry beans and other legumes.”

The Post notes that food storage is one pillar of the Mormon emphasis on self-reliance.

Keeping a years supply of food is something the mormons have preached for years.. They also would not let blacks in their priesthood until divine intervention ( of course the day it went to trail )... This weirdo is so predictable ... He spews his hate and makes millions doing so.. shame on him and shame on anyone who supports this azzhole !

You obviously don't know much about mormonism much more than what your KKK neighbor has told you. Maybe you should educate yourself on history before you start making comments on things you don't know much about.

As a fellow Mormon I have only one thing to say. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do not judge all of us by this guy's words and actions. To call a natural disaster that kills innocent people a gift from God is simply incensitive and ludicrous. Can God create such a storm? Of course. His he in the past? Of course. But not every single natural disaster is sign from the divine. I cringe everytime I see this man's name in the headlines. Makes me wonder, what lame thing has he done now to embarrass my faith, and the fait of all Christians.

We don't, we judge you by your inability to see that your man-made fairy tale is not real and filled with nonsense. Seriously, you're in a cult and can't realize it.

Mormonism is a cult, is not even old enough to be taken seriously as a religion. You think that you can go all over the world and convert people into your clan. Don't think you can fool the world just because you all were fooled.

      August 28, 2011 at 4:51 am |
    • Andre

@Anon. If you took the time to look up the definition of a cult, you'll find all religions will fall under that definition. It is defined by rituals and ceremonies. You could even classify Fraternities as cults, with their initiations and hazings. I'm not embarrassed of my faith. I don't run down my friends who are athiest or agnostic. I have friends who are gay, and don't run them down either, or tell them they are going to hell.

I feel sorry for you. Not because you don't have a belief in God, that is your choice that I respect. But because you feel the need to put someone down for not believing as you do. I don't need a book, or a prophet to tell me there is a God. I have my own experieces to tell me that.

Consistent blasphemy is surely tantamount to calling for God`s wrath. All u sinners will soon meet a horrible end. And Jesus Christ is infallible. Ur gibberish cant change this fact. Keep ur head buried in sand.

Attn Glenn Beck..Jesus Christ had told us all this before. This hurricane is not a blessing. It's a disaster. It's easy for you to say all this junk. There are people who were struggling way before this storm and THEY COULDN'T STOCK PILE ON FOOD. Glenn looks like you eat pretty good. Why don't you Glenn Beck sell everything you have and help your neighbor. That is what the Bible says Acts 2:45.

    • Mike

@Anon..you can believe whatever you wish. There is not a law that says you can't. The point is Glenn is wrong. He doesn't have a clue. I have watched for many years and listen to him. He twist things.

      August 28, 2011 at 4:48 am |
    • Anonymous

Obviously. But believing in the Bible as a fact of the Universe is a good sign that the person doesn't know much of history, comparative religion, philosophy or science in general. If one did, one would see how all religions and mythologies are created by men to both rule over and give existential security to other men. I'm sorry that you can't see past the illusion.

      August 28, 2011 at 4:52 am |
    • Mike

@Anon..you can disprove all of what you just said if you chose. Like I said "The POINT" is Glenn is false of what he talks about. When Glenn pulls things out of The Bible and changes it..that would make him a manipulator. Like I said you can do what you like and believe what you wish, there is no law in that. You must feel condemned or something because you are trying to justify your belief is(which has nothing to do with the topic.)

This god guy seems pretty vindictive. If "god" gave man free will, then why is it that everyone has to punished that doesn't obey? Or, since man has free will, wouldn't man have the ability to change "the end"? How about instead of sticking your heads in the sand waiting for a false prophecy, get out in to your community and help.

this post is not only logically unsound, its terribly random and chaotic in its approach. have you really read this post and thought about the questions and their implications. i mean really read it and thought for a few minutes? it as erratic as the religion you think it depicts. im not sure whats worse, religion, or religious people like you with no god; a walking contradiction

Religion scatters and condemns...Read the New Testament Bible..Gleen doesn't know what he is talking about. He is very wrong. He twists things for his advantage..Read The Bible New Testament and you will see.

okay ill explain. free will and judgement are two different things. and number two, man CAN use his freewill to change the end. if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice (rush)

      August 28, 2011 at 4:41 am |
    • Mike

@Head Count..sure you can do anything you wish. There is no law that says you cannot but Gleen is still wrong. If a person is going to be a Bible thumper that person needs to read it.

What is wrong with you people? It shows America is still living in the olden days of hatred and discrimination towards your fellow black men and women. And all those who believe that God is behind this, that he sends Earthquakes and Hurricanes for destruction of people lives and livelihoods, are crazy. This earth lives, it's a living planet! All materials made have a seam, so the earth has seams, it is not a solid thing like a rock, it's like patched up, it took him 7 days to patch up this planet into a ball, which you can compare to a football, which have patches of two different colors (white and black), the people that are living on this "ball" the earth, is also mixed with black and white people, who try to live in harmony with everybody, why disrupt it with foolishness. Who says, Jesus was a white man? He is portrayed in the Bible and on pictures as a white man. Who is God? He was a spirit, nobody ever saw how he looked like, neither you or me. Jesus was a man of flesh and blood, like any of us. Even He, we don't know what color (or race) he was. The Bible is rewritten several times, nobody knows the real truth, what is written is in the Original Bible (the Dead Sea Scrolls), everyone who rewrote or rewrites the Bible, has his own interpretation. So, please don't come with crap, that God is behind all this!

When this so called god intelligently designed the Earth did he design the plate tectonics with the full understanding they would cause major earthquakes that would result in the indiscriminate deaths of millions of his beloved creations?
Did he anticipates tsunamis and volcanoes and tornadoes and hurricanes that kill millions of innocent children when he intelligently designed the earth?
What kind of designer builds something he knows will kill the people he is designing it for?

The Almighty sends earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes etc so that u Godless morons can mend ur ways and come to the one right path. Godlessness is a curse, an abomination that corrupts the mind and ruins one`s ability to be rationale!

      August 28, 2011 at 4:37 am |
    • Beck's a freakin' fraud

@ Diaz: Normally, I just let you kooky Christians rant... But I have a question for you...You believe that the earthquake and hurricane were sent by God to teach the Godless a lesson. But what about all the devout Christians that will suffer because of the exact same hurricane and earthquake? Are they sinners too? And if so, doesn't that mean that the whole "Jesus died for your sins" thing is just a buncha crap? Because if He died for everyones' sins, and these natural disasters are ALSO Gods way of teaching us not to sin, then that means that natural disasters are basically Compound Interest on original sin, and that God doesn't keep his Word. Christianity: It's not just fun to pick apart, it's also SO simple. *Brought to you by the Foundation for Clear Thinking.

Trying to draw a parallel between the natural and supernatural is insanity, as the supernatural doesn't exist (or in the least can't be said to exist). You need some serious Jesus cause all the hatred you are spewing towards those who don't believe you is not the work of God, but the work of Satan. You claim that God is bringing this storm to us as a punishment for our sins. If that is the case, then were are all the locus and plagues covering the Earth? Earthquakes and Hurricanes are natural disasters, and no God will ever send just a thing just to kill and hurt people. There is always repentance and always salvation.
