Obama delivers very Christian message at Christmas tree lighting

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - President Barack Obama delivered an unusually stark Christian message at the White House Christmas tree lighting Thursday night, saying Christ's message "lies at the heart of my Christian faith and that of millions of Americans."

"More than 2,000 years ago, a child was born to two faithful travelers who could find rest only in a stable, among the cattle and the sheep," Obama said at the tree lighting ceremony, a longstanding White House tradition.

"But this was not just any child," Obama continued. "Christ’s birth made the angels rejoice and attracted shepherds and kings from afar. He was a manifestation of God’s love for us."

Obama has been more public and specific about his religious beliefs since polls last year showed that only a minority of Americans know he is Christian. Last Easter, Obama got unusually specific about his beliefs on Christ's resurrection at a White House prayer breakfast.

Some conservative Christian leaders have questioned Obama's Christian faith, even though Obama got his start in politics through church-based political organizing and has written about accepting Jesus in his 20s.

Last month, South Carolina Christian conservative leader Bob Jones III told a reporter “I’ve no reason to think (Obama is) Christian."

“Some people will say whatever they think the politically helpful thing would be,” Jones said. “I say, ‘Where is the evidence that he is a Christian?’ ”

In his remarks at Thursday's tree lighting, Obama said that Jesus "grew up to become a leader with a servant’s heart who taught us a message as simple as it is powerful: that we should love God, and love our neighbor as ourselves."

"So long as the gifts and the parties are happening, it’s important for us to keep in mind the central message of this season," he said, "and keep Christ’s words not only in our thoughts, but also in our deeds."

And yet again you can see from the posts on this topic, that religion is truly the most abominable thing that Mankind has ever invented. The sheer vitriol, verbal violence and hatred that spews from Christians against those that do not share their beliefs is putrid.

Those of you that post "what the Bible says" are truly and deeply misguided. Either you believe the Bible word for word, without ANY personal interpretation, or you do not; if you decide to "interpret" the Bible for yourselves, then you are in effect deciding that YOU are God! for you are replacing the word of God with your OWN WORDS.. YOUR interpretation of the Bible is irrelevant and a perversion of the very faith you pretend to worship.

The King James Bible (which the majority of Christians use) was written by a team of scholars at the behest of King James of Scotland (and England). They HAD to translate the Bible in such a way as to not offend or contradict the King; if they did offend him or contradict HIS PERSONAL opinion as to what the Bible said, they would have been put to death in a VERY unpleasant way.

The practical result of this is that the King James version of the Bible has very little to do with what the original scriptures say; it is politicized, incorrect, factually altered and so on.

The Bible itself was written by Men, FAR after the events described within it happened; sometimes as much as 300 years after the events.

What happens today with people's quotes? Let's examine what a Politician says at a News conference They are occasionally misquoted, they sometimes have their words quoted out of context, or sometime outright lies are written about what they said.... and this is WITH technology like the TV, Internet etc where what was said can be PROVEN without a shadow of a doubt. What are the chances that the Bible is correct given these facts?

Simple; the Bible is at best a collection of parables and morality plays designed to elicit obedience and compliance to some MAN'S/organization's vision of what is right and wrong. The Bible uses previous religions as a basis for Christianity.. one in a VERY long line of THOUSANDS of religions that Man has invented and continues to invent (Dianetics anyone?).

From Thor to Anubis, Vishnu and Zeus, Humanity has invented Gods for the purposes of control; to explain what could not at the time be explained (Thunder, lightning, naturally occurring phenomena etc, etc) and because at some level we all want a "father figure" to turn to for answers when we ourselves have none.

The sooner we all reject organized religion, the sooner we can all just be brother and sister humans, who can see each other without the vicious tunnel vision imposed on us by religion.

and the original writings of the bible have been translated into the niv and a bunch of other versions.

and for some strange reason all pretty much say the same thing as the king james version. so the king james version is really not special. it isn't far off at all from the original scripture at all.

man, people sure are misguided and uneducated.

Today in America 3,600 babies with unique DNA will be murdered
by abortion. Their brains vacuumed out. Arms and legs pulled off.
Skulls crushed. Great job Planned Parenthood let's give you more
    tax money next year !!!

This will put a smile on the face of Jesus !!!

Oh by the way did "I" mention that "I" an running for re-election...

Well said, Sir. If Obama truly believed what he said, there's no way he could advocate and support abortion. Words are cheap; actions show exactly what you are.

There are many Christians who support a woman's right to choose. Get off it, Cred. Just because you don't like abortion doesn't make it wrong or immoral.

I'm not the one who started lippin' off about abortion not being wrong nor immoral. HAA, is your name tommy? Tommy seems to like to play many roles, myself included. Did you know the Greek word " hypocrite "means" actor"? Just thought I'd point that out.

Your view of abortion is irrelevant, Keith. You can call it immoral all you want. That doesn't make it so.

And your morals and Bible don't rule this country; law do.

You can go ahead and post abortion p0rn; it's what hypocrites like you always do when they don't have an argument.

      December 5, 2011 at 8:32 pm |
    • Keith

And those laws are based on the Ten Commandments-of which YOU will be judged by someday very soon. Hope you like really hot places. BTW since you seem to be such grammar/spelling Nazi, it's "law does" or "laws do". -2 points for you tammy go back 4th Grade.

It's your hell, Keith, you burn in it. Your threats don't bother me because I don't believe in a hateful, merciless, vengeful, angry God who burn souls in eternity for any transgression or even for doubt and unbelief.

Don't care what your Bible says or what you say.

It is amusing to see people like you and HeavenSent practically salivating over the thought that you'll be able to view all those you hate roasting somewhere while you sit on clouds plucking your harps.

Oh, and you're completely wrong–the laws are not based on the ten commandments. At all. If they were, then one could be punished for not honoring one's parents or coveting one's neighbor's lawnmower. You idiot. Read some history; you're ignorant as well as stupid.

      December 5, 2011 at 9:12 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Keith, when are you going to explain why the majority of abortions are performed on women and girls who are Christians? You've been shown the source for the statistics. If it's such a sin, why are most of those having abortions Christians?

canada Is a third world country, geographically larger with about 10% of the USA population ,yet the ass hole per square mile ratio is 20X larger in canada than in the USA according to leading research firms. In fact if USA would have closed immigration from canada pre John Candy, the canadian ass hole per square kilometer ratio would have been twice that of the USA. We the USA , would still be shown minimally on a chart as Shatner was here.

Ah I see we are in rare form tonight! Actually, it is unfortunately not that rare. God bless all the angry people here with a new heart!
It is difficult for me to understand the whole "Black Theology" Reverend Wright thing. I mean I understand the entertainment side of it, but it seems to me that Obama is tacking much more mainstream these days. I think that happens to most presidents.. Carter was a Pentecostal. I don't understand why people like Reverend Wright continue on about slavery and such.. what happened to forgiveness? It is after all a central Christian theme......They can't seem to forgive America for slavery, preferring to keep the wound open and festering.

Anyway, I see Bob is on one of his ugly rants. Don't be offended by him Christian brothers.. "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do"

1 Peter 3:9 "Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. "
I'm praying for all of the angry people on this board..atheist, Christian, or otherwise...

It is very disturbing that religious narrow- mindedness, intolerance, violence and hatred continues unabated due to randomness of birth. Maybe, just maybe if this fact would be published on the first page of every newspaper every day, that we would finally realize the significant stupidity of all religions.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg (quoted in The New York Times, April 20, 1999)

The most heinous and the most cruel crimes of which history has record have been committed under the cover of religion or equally noble motives.
      -Mohandas Gandhi (Young India, 1927)

Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.

Keith is a typical self-proclaimed "Christian". He lies about Christ, he lies about the Bible, and he even lies about his own posts. He lies about what others have said and he lies about what he has said.

Good riddance to his sort. He's the kind of Christian that gives all other Christians a bad name. He's the kind who undermines the word of God by lying about it.

He and people like him are responsible for driving others away from Christianity by misrepresenting it.

Keith: "Quit accusing me of lying."

Why would I quit, when you have yet to stop lying, Keith? You've done nothing but lie from your first post to your last. You are nothing BUT a liar. You deny the meaning of your own posts, then attempt to put words in others' mouths, and do all of it under the aegis of Jesus' name.

    You're shameful, Keith. Unbelievably shameful.

You and people like you are what drive those with a conscience away from the church and from your idea of God. You are dishonest, dissembling, and hypocritical.

You are at fault for the failure of spirituality in this country. You and those like you.

    • Keith

Tommy the only way I will be responsible is if I don't show you the message of the Gospel. That has occurred in past postings with you. If I hadn't then your blood would be on my hands(Ezek 3:18-21). I won't be standing at the same judgement as you, since you appear to be headed to the judgement of the un-saved, The Great White Throne Judgement. I will be at the Judgement Seat of Christ for the saved. You Tommyboy will have no one to blame but YOURSELF. That's right, Tommy, you will have to step up and be a man and quit blaming others and accept responsibility for your lifestyle. Keith won't be there for you blame. You won't be able to blame HS, PRISM1234, Herbie, George or any other believer who tried to show you the Way, but all you did was mock these people. No sir, Tommy, you will be standing there all by your lonesome giving your account to the very same Jesus you continue to insult on a daily basis. There will be fire in His eyes and fear in yours. And that, Tommy, to the very best of my understanding of the Bible is the Truth.

      noun
      1.
a light, humorous play in which the plot depends upon a skillfully exploited situation rather than upon the development of character.
      2.
humor of the type displayed in such works.
      3.
foolish show; mockery; a ridiculous sham.
      ---
The only thing that's a farce here is Keith mouthing Christian plat i tudes while lying about his own words. The only farce here is someone spewing hatred while calling himself a Christian. The only farce here is someone who thinks he is God's own judge on Earth and gets to decide what people may or may not do based on his beliefs, rather than the law. The only farce here is some dimwit who can't spell "argument" pretending he has one.

I'm not an American in any event but...

I fully support everyone's right to believe whatever they like. But everyone also has a right to form an opinion about the validity of those beliefs. Questioning someone's beliefs, especially when they are attempting to make or change laws based on them, is not un-American! In fact, people that question someone else's beliefs and/or make statements about them are excercising their first amendment rights to free speech.

Of course the superiority complex queen will continue to say I'm "Herbie." I'll give you a hint. I'm not "Herbie." It is not as intelligent as it thinks it is.

umm...duh. What else is he supposed to say at Christmas event. Religion isn't the problem in the nation. It's how much people care about OTHER people's religion. Even though it's obvious Obama is a Christian, not a Muslim, I really don't think anyone should care either way. Just worship (or don't) to yourself, and even preach or sing hymns. But if someone else does it, either join them, or just go on your merry way. Merry Christmas everyone.

    December 4, 2011 at 7:31 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

You are spot on. Had Obama said nothing about the Christian beliefs surrounding Christmas, you can bet that zealots like Keith, Prissy, fred, herbie/Alfred, and HS would have been foaming at the mouth about it. Since he did, they're foaming at the mouth about that, too.

One can only conclude they're rabid.

      December 4, 2011 at 8:28 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

It's telling that Prissy, herbie, Keith and the other thumpers who had such a melt-down over this issue of the speech at Georgetown haven't even dared refute my statement.

And right-leaning CNN, " Obama delivers very Christian message".... What kind of message would you expect from a Christian? His message was similar last year and the year before. His message of Christianity has always been there. A young man graduating with high honors from Harvard could have gone anywhere to work...Wall Street or any prestigeous law firm....where did you go to the areas where the lest of us lived...making 10,000 per year..while the other ones who call themselves "Christians" had an agenda of wealth, although as empty as a bucket with a hole in it. This isn't nothing new for a Christian. It's the same message I was raised on! Were you?

What Christian faith is Obama talking about? Not his own pale, weak version that exists only for tabloids and press at election time.

You wouldn't know....I could tell by your comment. Never mind.

How is it YOU think you know anything about Obama's faith, Joey? Do you have second sight? Are you God? No? Then shut up, you moron.

  19. Mishka

Oh please, it's an act. And the double-speak about the "child" being amongst CATTLE and SHEEP. Sure, Obama, preach to the SHEEPLE. He knows he doesn't believe that story anymore than the next sane person. You people should read the Book of Enoch; you'll come away with a whole different perspective on your 'lil christ tale, that's for sure. Obama believes in: Yes We Can. Go to youtube and listen to THAT backwards.

  20. Bob

George, you Christians get your "morality" from an absurd book of fiction with no basis in reality, with a sky fairy of a god that metes out torture and other barbaric punishment for even minor hits to his ego. What an jerk of a god it is that you worship.

So how's that brutal goat sacrifice going, that your god commands you to do. Yes, your jeebus-on-a-stick did say the OT laws still apply, so don't go ranting that they don't.

    December 4, 2011 at 10:46 am |
    • Keith

Dear Bob, Please refer to reply to George on pg. 24 near the top of the page.

NOBODY SHOULD BE ABOVE THE LAW !!!

Obama, Holder, and Napolitano should all be in jail,
for the illegal sale of 2,500 weapons, to the Mexican drug cartels
... as well as the subsequent COVER UP of these crimes ...
resulting in the murder of thousands of innocent Mexicans,
and the murder of American border agent, Brian Terry.

If anything, Obama, Holder, and Napolitano,
should be held to a higher standard, than the rest of us.

In the days of Watergate, the Press demanded, and
got JUSTICE for the American people. Today, the
media looks the other way, or helps in the cover up !!!

      December 4, 2011 at 12:54 pm |
    • Bob

No valid response there, Keith,. Here we go again. So, Christians, your omnipotent skyfairy needed to put his son up on sticks to save us from his definition of "sin" for what reason again? Couldn't do the job without more blood and gore? It's not just hard to explain; it's truly impossible, because there is no valid reason.

Your idiotic jeebus scapegoat story is just stolen from earlier supersti-tions. Get over it already. Done your Sunday goat sacrifice yet? Remember, Jeebus said the OT rules of your sicko supersti-tion still apply, so get that blood burning or Christian god will be angry with you.
