Vatican.xxx not a porn site, Holy See happy to find

By Gabe LaMonica, CNN

(CNN) - The Internet is the grapevine. A Vatican spokesman's comments on radio this week led news organizations to report that the Vatican had lost its bid for Vatican.xxx, a coupling of the Vatican and the ".xxx" extension now reserved for pornographic content.

"This domain is not available because it has been acquired by someone else, but not the Vatican," the Rev. Federico Lombardi said on Vatican radio.

But that turns out not to be the case. On the contrary, the domain is reserved specifically for no one.

"Vatican.xxx is a name that is on the permanent reserve list, so it was pulled out of the registry before the launch," said Jocelyn Johnson, a representative for ICM Registry, the company operating the new dot-triple-X domain as a voluntary option for pornographic sites.

"No one is able to purchase that name," she said.

Hijacking names for websites is an all-too-common practice.

For example, "the Democrats own Newtgingrich.com," said the Rev. Tom Reese, referring to a site that redirects, in one instance, to an article titled, "Gingrich 'Inadvertently' Names Porn Company 'Entrepreneur of the Year' For Stimulating the Economy."

CNN's Belief Blog – all the faith angles to the day's top stories

Schoolchildren searching for whitehouse.com on the internet found porn in the late 1990s, and "the bottom line is it's almost impossible to protect yourself from this kind of stuff," said Reese, a Jesuit at Georgetown University.

"There are too many possible domain names," he said.

"Vatican girls.xxx, Vatican sluts.xxx, it's almost infinite - to say nothing of all the obscene words you can put together and all the words not only after but before Vatican. It's just an impossible task to defend yourself from this kind of stuff," he said.

The ICM Registry developed the dot-triple-X domain to provide a compromise between those who wish to provide access to pornographic material and those who wish to prevent access to it.

The Vatican.xxx rumor, originally reported by Reuters, brought to light the fact that the market is policing itself.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, "required ICM to work with a governmental advisory committee, and countries from around the world were invited to submit a list of names on the reserve list - from political leaders to singers," Johnson said. "Something like the Vatican would obviously be seen as socially sensitive."

Johnson surmises that people at the Vatican got the wrong idea when someone checked for Vatican.xxx and saw "it was reserved by ICM registry."

"They probably didn't realize there was a list of names that had been blocked," she said, "and if perhaps no one among the team there registered it or had done it themselves, then perhaps they thought that it was done by someone else."

Sister Mary Ann Walsh, spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Bishops, welcomed ICM's action.

"It is showing that people are taking responsibility in recognizing that anything can be used for ill as well as for good," she said, "and you have to take precautions that our technology is not used for ill."

"Even a Jesuit can make mistakes," said Reese, referring to the Vatican spokesman.

Internet p0rn sites allow subscribers to watch consensual acts between adults in the privacy of their own homes. Yeah, I can think of at least three reasons why the Vatican might object to that.

Anyways, maybe one of you still has 1/20th of your brain left....Here we go see if you can follow...Don't worry I'll keep it simple:)

I remember back in the early 90s, before pop up blocking, I did some research for a system to fix a wet basement. One was a series of dams on the floor to direct the wall leaks to a floor drain. It was called a Beaver something or other. Silly me didn't even think twice about it. I just wanted to keep my basement dry. I couldn't even stop the pop ups with ctrl/alt/del, had to power down with the button. Silly me, careful what you ask for.

    I like the picture.
    Is that cross solid gold?
If so, I know a gold buyer that would love to melt it down.
Then it would serve a better purpose than it is now.

You got it; gold never dies so keep the cross into your heart, if it was made of gold and/or is it made by the birth of Christ into your heart? So you never die only to live again into a new life.

That cross was either donated by a company that has waaaaaay more money than the Vatican, or it is so damn old nobody alive today has ever met the person who made it.

Merry Christmas or whatever seasonal greeting you fancy to all!!

No, it isn't solid gold. It's called the Papal Ferula, and the most current one was donated by a religious organization. There is lots of information and history available on the Internet on the topic.

Actually, Rod, the one currently in use was made in 2008. Several others have been made over the last century. Most, if not all Popes commission or receive their own, although it is quite common to use those of previous Popes as an honorarium.

The Vatican's IT staff don't appear to be the sharpest tools in the shed. Is anybody surprised these guys don't get technology – they're the same folks who spent hundreds of years banning books that don't conform to their view of the Bible (earth is the center of the universe for example). What gospel covers IPv4 anyway?

Father Le Maitre, a Catholic Priest, created the concept of the Big Bang. The Church accepted evolution a long long time before Americans have. The Church has to deal with the varying levels of education of 2B people and has 2000 years of history for you to nitpick. Overall, they are ahead of the game, because in the grand scheme of things, nobody cares about '.com' or anything like that. It's a temporary high tech hiccup.

It should be clarified that Lemaître, when he created the original model for an expanding universe, was speaking as a physicist first, not as a priest, even if his theological views fit with his discoveries as a physicist. The physics community would not have taken the word of a priest without some robust physics behind it, which, there was. I mean, Darwin too was a priest, but scientific advancements are made by people acting as scientists first, with their beliefs secondary. That's why I have little respect for Copernicus, who proposed a heliocentric model, but one that explained the data worse than the current geocentric model just because the man didn't want to challenge the idea of 'perfect circular orbits'.

Please, the Catholic chruch is a backwards organization who defends pedophiles, I'm not surprised you'd think the .com "Internet" thing" is a fad or hiccup. The Vatican is more interested in touching little boys than educating the masses. It is responsible for more suffering and daeths on this earth than any other organization in human history.

For a detailed and – for once – nuanced exploration of Galileo and his relationship with the Church, I can highly recommend "Galileo's Daughter" by Dava Sobel. The truth is much more convoluted and murky than the Man of Science versus Backward Establishment mythos so often peddled. An excellent read by one of the great history of science authors.

The Vatican staff members ,as do all members of the RCC, suffer from the Three B Syndrome i.e. they were Bred, Born and Brainwashed in their religion. For this reason, they are unable to think past the shackles put upon him by the likes of Paul, Mark, Matthew, Luke and John.

Will S – I have NO idea where you got that stat.... but it seems ludicrous.... I believe that pedophiles are equally distributed between all groups/professions/races etc.....like most things.

Granted I'm just an atheist, but it seems to me that this stat is something the Vatican would publish – (?) – after all, the current Pope IS the one that most people think was the major player trying to cover all of this stuff up per Popehood....

But hey – we shouldn't be negative during this season.... Although.... I was wondering....in all of those Nativity scenes I see around the country, who are the 3 Arab looking gentlemen wth the Gifts??? – Shouldn't we be looking inside those boxes??? After all, they do hve the 'look'.... and Christians all KNOW that these 'other' types are all evil and going to HE-double hockey sticks...
