Pastor’s detailed book on sex divides reviewers, sparks controversy

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) - Mark Driscoll, the pastor of a megachurch in the Seattle area, understands the uniqueness of a man in his profession coauthoring a book about sex with his wife. From the chapter on biblical approval of detailed types of sex to the chapter titled “Selfish Lovers and Servant Lovers,” the book is far from a timid look at a usually private subject.

And that has struck a nerve with a large swath of believers whose reactions have propelled the book to a trending topic on Twitter and has elicited responses that range from praise to disgust.

“Real Marriage: The Truth about Sex, Friendship and Life Together” released on Tuesday.  The book was written by Driscoll and his wife, Grace, to, in Mark’s words, “compel married couples to have important conversations about important things.”

In the first half of the book, the Driscolls discuss their own sexual issues using the lessons they learned to discuss how to reignite a marriage whose flame may have gone out. The book’s second half, which is getting most of the negative attention, discusses sex in detail.

In response, religious scholars and writers have blasted the Driscolls’ work on a number of grounds ranging from the logistical to the biblical.

“In the first place, there is a kind of sloppiness and inconsistency to the book…” writes pastor and religion blogger Tim Challies. “Real Marriage reads more like a series of seminars than a cohesive introduction-to-conclusion look at a subject.”

But more than just punctuation and flow, the backlash against the book stems largely from the revealing chapter titled “Can we ___?” The Driscolls fill in that blank throughout the chapter by using different forms of sex and then answering whether the act is biblically lawful. This chapter even comes with a disclaimer, warning conservative readers or readers who “live far away from a major city” that they may want to sit down while reading.

Denny Burk, a Biblical studies professor at Boyce college and popular blogger, writes the chapter is inherently flawed because Driscoll’s interpretation of 1 Corinthians 6:12, his main argument in allowing many of the sex acts, is incorrect. Even more, writes Burk, this chapter could be dangerous.

I think chapter 10 has the potential to wreak havoc in such marriages where one spouse will feel a whole range of taboos to be “permissible” if he can convince his spouse to participate. This to me seems like a recipe for marital disaster, and I do not think the Driscolls’ requirement of “helpfulness” mitigates the difficulty.

And even that that was timid compared to what author and blogger Rachel Held Evans writes about not only the book, but Driscoll in particular. "True maturity,” she writes, “is marked not by how much a person knows but by the wisdom he or she shows in discerning when to speak with authority and when to hold back. And when it comes to maturity, I’m afraid that Pastor Mark still has a long way to go.”

When asked to respond to his critics, Driscoll said he hadn’t read any of the reviews but that “sometimes reviewers will reveal more of their own struggles than actual problems with the book.”

“I am not backing down from it. I am going to stick to my guns on it,” Mark Driscoll said. “This is not just stuff that I have pulled out of my mind. These are issues I have dealt with for 15 years and it is battle tested.”

Seattle pastor returns to Haiti

Mark and Grace Driscoll founded Mars Hill Church in 1996. Though it started out as a single location church, as the congregation grew, Mars Hill became a multi-campus church and now has locations around the Puget Sound region and in California.

Though the scathing reactions have been loud, not all reactions were harsh – a fact that Driscoll notes on his website.

“I am so thankful that Mark and Grace Driscoll wrote this book,” writes Perry Noble, senior pastor of NewSpring Church. “Their approach to marriage, its benefits and challenges, are transparent and challenging.”

This division among pastors and scholars shows the polarization of opinion that boundary pushing pastors like Driscoll have come to embody. As noted by Aaron Armstrong on Blogging Theologically, “Whenever Mark Driscoll talks about sex and marriage, ears perk up. Some listen for ammo (and can usually find it). Others listen for something Tweetable. Still others search for something helpful.”

And in a way, that is how Mark Driscoll likes it. In response to the criticism, Driscoll jokingly said, “you try and write a book on sex with your wife.”

He went on to say that the negative attention is just part of writing a book like "Real Marriage." Looking at himself in that light, Driscoll said the controversy is worth it if marriages are helped by the book.

“I will endure as much criticism as necessary to help as many people as I can,” concluded Driscoll.

This whole debate over proving that God exists is such a pointless arguement. How can you argue about people's beliefs and opinions? You cant change what people think, especially over the INTERNET.

On the other hand, why does Christianity seem to be the only religion talked about. There has been hundreds of religions over history. Whos to say that the Greeks are the ones that got the whole religion thing right and Zeus and Pallas Athena and Poseidon control everything. Whos to say that there is no religion at all? There has to be SOMETHING or else i wouldnt have to put up with learning about ancient civilizations' religions every time i step into my World Civ class.

The Greek gods, just like all the other ancient gods, were angels who came down to Earth in human and anthropomorphic form. People worshipped them because they were tall, incredibly strong and appeared to be supernatural, and because they obviously encouraged humans to treat them as gods. Their ridiculous behavior wasn't tolerated for long but their legends and temples survived much longer.

People looked to the heavens and the 'gods' to explain what was at the time the unexplained. I just saw a history channel show about Thera which was destroyed by a volcano 100 times the strength of Mt St Helen. The Therans did not know about the scientific facts on the earth, volcanic and seismic activity. They attributed the volcanic and seismic activity to the Earth Shaker whom they had angered. They tried to appease him first through animal sacrifice, and when that didn't stop the tremors, through human sacrifice. Needless to say, neither worked and their civilization was destroyed.

This is one example of the types of things that people, before they discovered reality through science looked to deities to explain. There are still unknowns which we attribute to God or the 'gods' or some sort of supernatural all powerful being. In my humble opinion, the origins of all religions can be traced to such attempts to understand the explainable.

Mr David the very words you just spoke are recorded in the Word of God of those questioning when the Lord will return Have you ever heard of the word called forbear. Hebrews chp9v27 states it is appointed unto man to die once, then comes the judgement. Do not look at how long the Lord has waited to come, remember you do not have hundreds of years to get it right. You and others that think like you can say what you want, the fact remains that when you die you will be judged. A true believer will not be moved from his faith as King David said in Psalm 62. I pray that your eyes, ears and your heart is opened to the truth. Jesus for life!

The very fact that you can reason and communicate and perceive the imperceptible, should make you think more deeply.

A few centuries ago, you would never believe that all physical matter was made up of the invisible atom, and the ability to communicate with someone on the other side of the world as if talking face-to-face would have been preposterous to you.

Now, just reverse engineer those two thoughts, and then all the miracles that you can't fathom and the existence of God himself become very believable. Put plainly, seeing is not always believing, is it?

Read the scriptures with an open and humble mind and with the help of those whose eyes have been opened. The sheer beauty and relevancy of the truth will come alive to you in a way that no man made fantasy can ever do.

A myth is fantasy that prevides nothing buy an enjoyable story for someone to use. They tend not to have any real meaning or worth for living your life. Everything taught in the bible directly relates to living 2000 years ago and today. Following those mythical teaching makes someone better for society, better for their neighbors, and generally allows them to live longer. What does your current non-mythical lifestyle teach you? I bet it teaches you the same lesson the animals already know, survival of fittest. And I bet you complain and wonder why the economy is in its shape. its because of people with your ideology.

MARK, you obviously never read the BIBLE. The BIBLE is totally relevant to people living today. The bible teaches how to lie joyful lives with a real hope for the future. It teaches us how to be good citizens, good neighbors, good parants, good husbands and wife, and how to raise decent respectable children. As it is written at 2 Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, and for setting things straight. This is no myth.

It would be good if pastors would concentrate more on the spirit and less on the body. I grow weary of hypocrites who just want some nooky in the name of the Lord. That is as blunt as it gets, folks. It's worldy, temporary, and minor in comparison to the real spiritual, political, and social issues facing believers today. But it sells books and gets him on CNN.

II wish the readers' comments focused on the blog post and not on a mish-mash of related/unrelated topics. I've noticed this with every post on religion. CNN really needs an administrator to filter off-topic and rude comments. As for Mark Driscoll's book, I've come across far too many negative reviews on the book and also on his preaching style to ever want to read any material by this author. If the book is helping couples out there – that's a good thing. However, given the amount of legitimate criticism this book has garnered, it's a good idea to read with discernment.

I understand what you are saying, because of some of the reviews I read... but remember the loudest voices are usually the ones that are heard and are often the most extreme. I've been attending Mars Hill Church (Pastor Mark is the lead pastor) for about 5 years now and my faith has grown enormously. He speaks about things that most pastors won't and that's what makes many people angry. Regardless though, he always preaches the Bible. Truthfully, if you are ever struggling with any issues, I would highly recommend watching a sermon of his on marshill.org. I've not only enjoyed every one of his sermons, but I've also found most to be extremely beneficial to my spiritual growth. He preaches Christ even if others don't agree, and that's what makes some people angry.

so let me ask what if "god" was an alien? he "came down from above" had more power than anyone on earth, and has magical powers of healing etc...and what if "god" is actually the devil in disguise? powerful leaders have done it throughout history numerous times. they get followers to believe what they say is true and everyone else is wrong. yet they still allow themselves to do horrible things like mass killings or turning people on each other while they sit on the sidelines and say its ok because they said so. the concept of believing EVERYTHING this "god" said or did was ok is rediculous. if i were to walk up to someone and say the things he did...people now-a-days would look at me like im crazy! ever heard of brainwashing?? prime example.

to: heard of philosophy...ok every argument between god and science ends in "prove he does exist" and "prove he doesnt" theres no physical evidence he exists, its all about believing what people have told you, kind of like when you were young your parents told you santa was real. people build stories, the bible was written hundreds of years after they supposedly happened. ever played telephone? one person starts with a phrase and tells the next and so on till the last person repeats it out loud, there is always a flux in the story. whos to say that didnt happen in the bible after hundreds of years of story telling? and regarding your post on another persons comments about us being the most advanced, yes we are. yet we still believe in things from thousands of years ago? and referring to my thought of god possibly being an alien, i dont believe he was personally but who knows, egyptians had hyrogliphics (spellcheck) that has pictures of rockets on them. who knows what they were because we cant decrypt them but where would those ideas come from being thousands of years before flight was achieved

I'm sorry, but you do know that it was actually Christians who believed the earth was spherical first? And they were called heretics and were excommunicated from the Roman Catholic church? Nowhere in the Bible does it say the earth is flat. Also, note that the Bible claims that there are as many "stars in the sky as there are grains of sand on the seashore"...which is the quote on the Hubble telescope...it was non-religious, atheistic scientists who refuted this by counting the few thousand stars they could see with the naked eye which they said was proof the Bible was inaccurate.

Actually Taryntula, the first westerners to believe the Earth was round were some Greek philosophers in the 3rd century BC. THe idea had been thrown about since the 6th centruy BC but was proven in the 3rd. the belief was not that the world was flat, but that everything fell 'down' not toward the center of the earth: if you sailed too far, you would fall off (imagine water running over one of those fountain globes)

AC: 'Its mysterious therfore god dunn it' is not really an arguement. the possibility of god is always there, however as god will only be proven/disproven at death (or if he/she/it decides to make his/hers/its existance plainly provable) it is a more prudent use of time to look for other possible explanations first. Ones that might be provable.

Philosophy: While I agree with you that Jack's comment is a bit arrogant and ignorant, you don't really need to go straight to dripping sarcasm designed to make you look smart and make him look dumb do you. The bible saids of God "He is stretching out the north over the empty place, HANGING THE EARTH UPON NOTHING." "To whom can people liken God?....(He) is dwelling above the CIRCLE of the earth." - Job 26:7; Isaiah 40:18,22 The bible got it right even if most people didn't. Just like today, most people don't know what the bible really teaches. They just listen to what their preacher says; or, to nay sayers like you. Read the bible for yourself and then talk.

It's all about having faith when it comes to believe in God really. Those who will go to heaven are those who believed in God without having to see any proof. When you accept it God will show you his power in so many ways, you just need to believe.

I would rather you give me a good argument as to why God "cannot" exist, or "does not" exist with your "superior" and more "intelligent" atheistic mind. I find that most atheists know about half of what they think they do about what they don't believe in.

      January 24, 2012 at 5:46 pm |
    • PresbyMike

      C. S. Lewis said something like, "You can't see the God above you when you're busy looking down your nose at everyone else." You are being closed-minded when you say there is no reasonable evidence. There are reams of evidence. There is casual evidence: every church building, every religious shool or hospital or orphanage, every believer who experiences God's presence in worship, 2 billion who claim faith in Christ, every religious book, every religious work of music, etc. They wouldn't exist if someone hadn't experienced God's presence in some way. There is historical evidence: the life death and resurrection of Jesus, the existence of ancient Israel, the impact of all religions in the world, and more. Then there is the scientific evidence: big bang, limited universe about 13 billion years old, the tilt of the earth's axis, make up of elements in the universe, complexity of sub-cellular systems, etc. all point towards the existence of a Creator. There is no slam-dunk proof either that God exists or doesn't, but there is plenty of evidence to sift through and make an educated decision.

      January 25, 2012 at 11:32 am |
    • Mark

The universe is so well organized that it is impossible that is created by God. If you consider that maybe is is simply probabilities, consider that all probability theory says that least probably will not happen. Compound that with each molecule and atom working correctly and how can you say it all came from nothing. Even those that believe in the big bang and have everyone believing that we came that way cannot prove their side at all.

But when you look at the complexity of the universe and think about how something as simple as a electronic watch works and when one part of the clock fails to work how the entire system stops. It is hard to believe and the proababiliity is so low that it would be considered "not possible" by any probability anaslyst.

Einstein whom all agree was a genius said "The most beautiful and most profound experience is the sensation of the mystical. It is the sower of all true science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead. To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their primitive forms – this knowledge, this feeling is at the center of true religiousness. Mark and Grace Driscoll may be able to take the heat from the criticism of their book, but what about their children? I wonder if they considered what affect publishing this book would have on their children. No child wants to know what their parents do behind closed doors and now the Driscoll children get to deal with the repercussions of that and the bad publicity. Some things are meant to remain untold to the world, Mark and Grace Driscoll; especially to the children you have that can read.

No just no. What makes you think his children will even read the book, LOL. If you are going to hate at least have a logical reason as to why this is harmful.

      Heather,

So true. You have the best response on this matter and it seals the argument for me. Thumbs down to indiscretion. What we say or write matters – not just to us, but to those around us. Sanctify your own home instead of trying to resolve the world's problems.

Its better to give him the worship, be humble, confess your sins, let him take control of your life, suffer and take life of being called crazy and be mistreated and go to heaven and have eternal life with no hunger, no sadness, pure happiness in Gold streets with water clear as crystals living with him in mansions than to do what WE want what our flesh wants because if we do what our flesh wants then we will fall into the bad path way and burn in hell forever, thinking about our loved ones and having all that guilt on your mind. I just want people to see whats going on before our eyes! I suggest you watch the movie left behind and that if you want to see more proof of God and Jesus being real then I suggest you go see many testimonies and changed lives. The devil gets a lot of people but don't let him get you! Many singers sold their souls to the devil and its just a matter of clicks away to go see them confess it on videos on Youtube and hearing their songs background with demonic messages. We only have a little of time here left and those who aren't ready and don't believe in him then they will stay behind when Jesus comes back to get his people. Darkness is scared of the light and if you embrace the light(Jesus, God, Holy Spirit) then you will have no fear and you will be protected. People say " oh then why does God let many people die each day?" its simple as if I were to die today, I wouldn't care because, I would be in a better place than here and those who deny him and don't believe in him being ignorant and still doing the bad then if they aren't ready then God is going to take their lives and they will burn in hell. But you reading this, you still have a chance to change. I love you all I'll be praying for you guys. I just felt to write this because, God put it in my heart just like giving up all my birthday money to help out a family in need because, God put it in my heart. I suggest you guys go to a Christian church and learn more about him and the word and become closer to him and just feel the wonderful feeling of praising him. Well God Bless you guys.

I'm not sure if Fluffybunny is psychotic or not, but I do think that she is around 14 years old. As our friend @Enjaysea says, "her baby brains have fallen out and her adult brains have not yet come in!" For some, however, they never do come in, and they go around like the toothless, eating poisoned mush such as the "Left Behind" pap.

Fluffybunny, if "Satan" is the Master Deceiver, how can you possibly know that you haven't been tricked and have sold your soul to him? (I don't believe in "Satan", but am just going with your fantasy for a thought experiment).

trying to explain the bad aspects of religion to a religious person is like trying to explain to a 5 year old why candy is bad for his teeth. Science flies us to the moon. Religion flies us into buildings.

It wasn't religion on the Enola Gay. Explaining the negative aspects of secularism to a secular person is like....maybe the same thing? A closed mind is a closed mind no matter what perspective it comes from.

    Excellent.....

Look up the intellectual fallacy called, "generalization", you are guilty of it. Of course, there are religions that are ridiculous and false. You know that, I know that. Does that mean there is not one that is true? According to you it does, which is as foolish as it is to say that since some people stink, all people stink. Rotten food is disgusting, so all food is disgusting.

This cake tastes bad; therefore, all cake is bad. That, right there, is a fantastic argument, friends.

I think the entire concept of religion is whacky. Its caused too many wars and bloodshed for it to be taken seriously by rational individuals. I understand that people need it to lean on during times of hardship and uncertainty, but the whole idea of accepting impossible stories as truth based solely on faith seems very dangerous. Its as if people suspend their reason when they jump into religion. Come on it doesn't make sense; all of civilization did not arise from just two people, Moses didn't collect two of all the animals on earth in a small boat, and people who die don't come back from the dead.

No, not accepting it on blind faith. The Bible doesn't advocate blind faith (Heb 10-11). No, if you are willing to let go of your ignorance and do a bit of reading then You will discover that the literature you accept as truth is questionable at best. Take Plato, Aristotle, and Herodotus... ever heard of these guys? Well we have a whopping 8 copies of Herodutus, less for the other two. Among the three, Plato provides us with the earliest copies since the original and our copies date 1300 years after the orignal! We don't even have enough copies to construct original writings for any of them. What about the Bible you say? 14,000 copies. The oldest copy dates back to within 100 years of original writing with 99.5% accuracy amongst copies. Even the enemies of Jesus write about his historical existence, denying he ever lived is living in ignorance.

You are right. Moses didn't get two of every animal onto a boat. Noah did.

It is written as a prophesy in the Bible (for all those non-believers, a prophesy is an accurate prediction of an event that is to come and without the aide of any man made instruments) that in the last days, people will be lovers of themselves; haters of good and lovers of pleasure rather than lover of GOD. Well, I guess this truly is the last days. To all TRUE believers, do not judge because we are not judges, let GOD be the judge because HE is.

mr jay lim...who is it to say that god is the only one to judge people? i believe that is false and because people give him power by believing him...same as if we were to grow up in a different country that had a king we would believe he was more powerful than us because we were told so. yet we look at the kings on other countries from america's viewpoint and realize they have no more power over me than my neighbor. and where is there proof that it is the end of days? please explain

      Good lord! (sarcasm intended)

It's been the "end of days" since the beginning of days. People have been preaching that the end is near for hundreds of years yet here we are. Instead, let's just call this what it is – a collection of essays disguised as a book written by someone with a strong religious following that was created with the intent to: #1 – sell books, #2 – help people in an area the author thought they needed, and #3 – help himself feel better about the choices he's made in the name of God.
