Survey: U.S. Protestant pastors reject evolution, split on Earth's age

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

America’s Protestant pastors overwhelmingly reject the theory of evolution and are evenly split on whether the earth is 6,000 years old, according to a survey released Monday by the Southern Baptist Convention.

When asked if “God used evolution to create people," 73% of pastors disagreed - 64% said they strongly disagreed - compared to 12% who said they agree.

Asked whether the earth is approximately 6,000 years old, 46% agreed, compared to 43% who disagreed.

A movement called Young Earth creationism promotes the 6,000-year-old figure, arguing that it is rooted in the Bible. Scientists say the earth is about 4.5 billion years old.

The Southern Baptist Convention survey, which queried 1,000 American Protestant pastors, also found that 74% believe the biblical Adam and Eve were literal people.

“Recently discussions have pointed to doubts about a literal Adam and Eve, the age of the earth and other origin issues," said Ed Stetzer, president of LifeWay Research, a division of the Southern Baptist Convention, in a report on LifeWay’s site. “But Protestant pastors are overwhelmingly Creationists and believe in a literal Adam and Eve.”

The phone survey was conducted in May 2011, sampling ministers from randomly selected Protestant churches. The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percent, LifeWay said.

A 2010 Gallup poll found that 40% of Americans believe God created humans in their present form, versus 54% who said humans developed over millions of years.

Since you believe that god must be all-knowing, all-powerful and infallible, and not at all sneaky, perverse, devious or evil, then what do you make of the fact that Judas was used, taken advantage of, deliberately created for a malicious purpose, expendable, and condemned from the beginning because god knew that was a role needing to be filled? What, did Judas’ soul just happen to pick the shortest straw? How had that poor unborn soul ever had a chance to pi$$ off god before the soul was even born into corporeal form, which you have to admit, your system of beliefs assures you that sins are “of the flesh”? Yet again, evidence that your god must be sadistic and cruel… and ridiculous. PUKE!! If not for Judas fulfilling the role of betrayer, Jesus would not have been swept away to the crucifixion, and would not have then proceeded to “live on” in the form of the printed text: a text from which “saints” like you derive stale beliefs, which may I remind you only gained such immense global popularity due to its being adopted as a national religion by one Emperor Constantine of Rome, still powerful on the flat-world scene in 312. Yea, the political maneuverings of bellwether politicians can sway easily persuadable lemmings in the masses, much like in modern politics where you might have seen the infamous dolt, George W. Bush, ineloquently pretending to be a Christian on national television to gain votes and support for a moronic and endless war. Is it not even slightly interesting to you that the known history of mankind shows that virtually every race, in all locations throughout the globe, has developed its own system of beliefs… in deities, in philosophies, in afterlife, in death and rebirth, acknowledgement of good and evil, of the need for justice, etc., and many of which were done independently of having foreknowledge of Judaism, or any of its predecessors? Is it not curious that most humans have independently sought after an explanation for the how and why of existence? Life is compelling, and surely you must acknowledge that even with the complexity of human knowledge and thought, that we as a species still know very little about existence. And certainly you must concede that much of what people thought thousands of years ago is very likely to be irrelevant now, or just downright wrong. People DID think the world was flat once. Remember? Anyway, the universe is much larger than we can fathom. Life is too short and precious to waste it on something like your monomaniacal and completely ludicrous faith!

The answer to your query about Judas is that God did not create Judas for the purpose of betraying Jesus. Judas, just like the rest of us, had free will to choose his actions. Jesus didn't put a gun to his head and say go betray me now. With that said, because God is all-knowing, He did know that this would be Judas' actions before he ever did them. However, just has Jesus told Peter that he would deny him 3 times before the crock crowed, which he did do, he had the opportunity of repentance.

Judas, even though he did betray Jesus, had the opportunity, just as much as anyone else to repent. Peter repented and went on and became a great disciple and preached the gospel. Judas didn't because he had allowed his sin to consume him and not repent.

This is the same concept that follows us today, we have all sinned, but we have the opportunity to repent and turn to God. Then we too can be free from our guilt, shame, and condemnation. We can live in a joy and a freedom that only Christ can give!!

The Bible is the authority and discerner of all things (Hebrews 5:12). The Word of God is God and the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending (John 1:1; Rev. 1:8).

The Mystery of God begins with the fact that mankind in his natural state is not able to receive the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (1 Cor. 2:14).

This includes all that is to know about Creation and the history of mankind. The following is a copy of the article ‘Creation’ listed on our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca and is according to the Spirit of truth (John 14:17).

All of the other pages and articles will explain how and by whom this world has been deceived as confirmed by the Word of God in Revelation 12:9 and they will also explain what mankind must do to be reunited with God and to be able to understand the Bible.

    Creation

Since mankind is unable to understand the Bible (1 Cor. 2:14) and is separated from God through the power of sin and the spirit of this world, there has been much speculation and misconception about the origin of man as part of God’s Creation.

We have explained much of the mysteries and the early days of Adam & Eve and where and when they lived, in the article ‘Who is God and who is Satan?’ posted on this website.

It is well known that Adam & Eve lived approximately 4,000 BC in the area presently called Baghdad and Adam lived to be 930 years of age.

Most people still believe today that Adam & Eve were the first man and woman that God created, which has proven to be impossible, as mankind in its present form has existed for millions of years.

Adam was the first Son of God as explained in the article ‘The Mystery of God Revealed’ listed on this website, but Adam and Eve were not the first man and woman as claimed by so many.

The purpose of this article is to show mankind what took place before the days of Adam & Eve, and how God’s Creation has developed (evolved) for billions of years.

We are not speaking about evolution as a form of creation, but as a form of development, growth and advancement. This article will also serve as another piece to the puzzle of the Mystery of God (Mark 4:11; 1 Cor. 4:1; 4:1; Eph. 1:9; 3:3; 6:19; 1 Tim. 3:16).

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1). Without giving any recognition of God’s infinite power, mankind started to gain information about two hundred years ago, how this world was created through a theory of natural selection as presented by Charles Darwin.

Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist who realized and presented compelling evidence that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors, through the process he called natural selection.

The fact that evolution occurs, became accepted by the scientific community and much of the general public in his lifetime, while his theory of natural selection came to be widely seen as the primary explanation of the process of evolution in the 1930s, and now forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory.

In modified form, Darwin’s scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, providing logical explanation for the diversity of life.

Darwin’s theory was met with derision by the religious communities, especially the Roman Church. They had placed the Bible in the index of forbidden books by the Council of Toledo in 1229 AD and were totally void of any wisdom and knowledge of God as orchestrated by and while under the powers and principalities of this world (Eph. 6:12).

The primary objective of the Vatican in those days, was to convince every man, woman and child that Adam and Eve were the first man and woman.

Due to mounting pressures by undisputed scientific evidence, even the Vatican has now changed its stand about the Theory of Evolution advanced by Charles Darwin. Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, said Darwin’s theory, which the Church was against, is compatible with Christianity.

The acknowledgment of Darwin’s theory, coincides with the holding of a papal-backed conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University to observe the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s 'On the Origin of Species'.

Now Darwin’s Theory of Evolution has still been in crisis, in light of the tremendous advances science has made in molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics over the past fifty years.

While Darwin’s evidence brought his Theory of Evolution back to only a certain timeframe of God’s Creation, it is only recently that mankind has been able to unlock the mystery of molecular mechanism.

A biochemistry professor and a student at the University of Montreal have proposed a new theory how life on earth may have started and found the answer in the ribosome, a relatively large mechanism within the cell that takes RNA (Ribonucleic Acid) instruction and builds proteins.

Scientists have long wondered how chemicals spontaneously came together to create proteins before life began itself.

According to the professor, life got started approximately four billion years ago and his theory fills in a critical step in understanding how God’s Creation developed and advanced.

The following statement by the professor is critical in being able to understand God’s Creation:

"In the absence of such explanations, some people could imagine unseen forces at work when such complex structures emerge in nature."

The unseen forces (1 Peter 1:8; 1 John 4:20) refer to God who is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24) in order to be able to come to the acknowledging of the truth and of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ (Col. 2:2).

The above is what the believers refer to as Creation while many refer to it as evolution as they do not understand and accept God as the creator of all things. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end and the first and the end of all things (Isaiah 40:28; 41:4: 44:6; 48:12; Revelation 1:8,11,17; 21:6; 22:13).

Now the spirit of this world (Satan) knows that his kingdom will not stand and that it eventually will come to an end (Matthew 12:25,26).

He also knows that Christ some day will return to set up God’s everlasting Kingdom. Satan’s desire has always been to be equal with God (Isaiah 14:13), and his attempt to know through science (biology, biochemistry and genetics) how life was formed, has been a futile attempt to be equal with God, by trying to disapprove that God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1).

In the last decade, the spirit of this world (Satan) has even tried to copy the creation of life by means of what mankind has called ‘cloning’, which is the production of a genetic twin of another organism. But this will prove to be a futile exercise as well.

Cloning is man’s work and man trying to be god. It is similar to Genetic Engineering or the modifying of biological organisms or genes outside the natural realm of a body, plant or tree.

Personalized Regenerative Medicine (generating stem cells) falls into the same category. It is all an abomination in God’s eyes.

The history of mankind and how life was formed and advanced, prior to the days of Adam and Eve (4,000 – 3,070 BC) is irrelevant, as mankind without union with God, was not a living soul (Genesis 2:5).

All of the other mysteries concerning God’s separation from Adam and Eve and how mankind came to live under the power of sin and the spirit of this world, we have explained in the book 'A World Deceived' and the pages and articles listed on this website.

Much has happened in the last six thousand years and the days Adam & Eve were called and formed by God (Genesis 2:7) to teach mankind about the wisdom and knowledge of God. However, Adam and Eve failed in their mission and as a result, God separated Himself from them and their offspring (Genesis 6:7).

In order to keep God’s word alive and to keep the way of the tree of life (Genesis 3:24), God sent others, but mankind has always refused to listen to the prophets, Christ (God in the flesh) whom they crucified, the disciples and all those that followed thereafter as mankind continues to prefer darkness over light (John 3:9).

It is our hope that through our testimony you will come to understand Christ’s message of repentance and while you may be searching, please remember that there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents (Luke 15:10).

And our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that is simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward (2 Cor. 1:12).

We encourage you to direct any questions to us, and have provided you with a contact page for this purpose.

    Footnote:

Our Ministry, which is in Christ and according to the Spirit of truth (John 14:17), has reached out to CNN and key contacts for more than two years but they continue to sensationalize news, involving religious doctrines of which they have no knowledge, rather than convey a message of truth. Recently they even arranged to have all of our e-mails blocked to ensure we are no longer able to contact the writers in order to explain their deceptive articles.

The purpose of our postings is to keep straight the way of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

For a better understanding of the history of Adam & Eve, the story of Noah and what it means to be a Christian, we invite you to read the articles ‘Who is God and who is Satan?’ and ‘Can Christianity or any Other Religion Save You’ listed on our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca

To give people a better understanding of the principalities and destructive forces (Eph. 6:12) that control the Media, US Politics and the issues that divide this world, we invite you to read the articles ‘CNN Belief Blog ~ Sign of the Times’ and ‘Influence of the Media’.

All of the other pages and articles will explain how and by whom this world has been deceived as confirmed by the Word of God in Revelation 12:9 and they will also explain what mankind must do to be reunited with God and to be able to understand the Bible.

He that is spiritual judgeth (discerneth) all things, yet he himself is judged of no man (1 Cor. 2:15; 14:37; Proverbs 28:5; Gal. 6:1; Col. 1:9; John 3:8; 5:30; 8:15; 16:8-11).

      The Phist

The Gospel we preach is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ (Gal. 1:11,12).

The problem is that by nature you will not be able to understand it (1 Cor. 2:14). For this reason our message remains the same: Ye must repent and turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan (whose spirit he is of) unto God (Acts 26:18). Without the Baptism of Repentance (Mark 1:4) you will remain spiritually blind and separated from God.

For a better understanding what mankind must do to be reunited with God, what it means to repent and to be a sinner, we invite you to read the articles ‘Repent’, 'What is Sin?' and 'Victory over Sin' listed on our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca

By the way, I'd like to state something before you make another stupid comment.

When will retards stop assuming that atheists don't have an understanding of the bible? We understand it far more than christians do. Most of us are former believers that actually took the time to research it and read it.

You aren't going to get me to believe in this garbage until you can get god to show up at my doorstep. Until then, you're wasting your time.

I'm with the Phist on this one. The Bible is meaningless fantasy. God is no more real than Santa Claus or the tooth fairy. We grow up to reject those last 2 but for some odd reason the God delusion persists even among intelligent adults. Indoctrination truly is a powerful weapon for brainwashing.

For those of you who have never literally heard the voice of Christ as I have and many others, what are you concerned about? He isn't going to force you. He could have created us all to just be a bunch of happy zombies with no free will whatsoever, but that was not his desire. He desires people who willingly want to follow him but he will not force anyone. However, you need to know that if you continue to choose to reject him, then the love that you have for your families and others will be forfeited...because it's not your love, it's God's, and he has merely allowed us to experience it while we are on this planet. But if you die without Christ, you will spend an eternity in a place where only insane evil exists, because the love of God is not there. Those who are there, didn't want his love. That's the real torment of hell.

The choice of heaven or hell was settled at Calvary. If you have accepted the Lord Jesus as your savior you enter heaven. If you reject the Christ you end in hell. I think you were trying to say Mahatma Ghandi, but not doing it very well. That would have been between him and Jesus.

Spelling aside, my point was that Ghandi was an amazing person that contributed so much to the world. And yet because he chose to seek Truth within himself he must burn in hell. This is what drives many away from religion in general. That ultimatum is not representative of free will.

      @HawaiiGuest
You are correct...love is only of God, and we are fortunate he has allowed us to experience it. WHAT IS LOVE? The answer cannot be found on earth, and without God, can we know that such a thing even exists? No, we cannot. But God says it exists, and therefore we can know that it does.......but why are we not able to define it? Not even the Bible itself defines love for us, and the dictionary merely guesses. So what is it? Has God created a word that even he cannot define?.................the fact is, he can define it as I have found out but it took a lot of asking on my part. The deep hidden things of God, he does not reveal easily.........because most people simply want.........to mock.

      @HawaiiGuest
Ghandi is not burning in hell because he chose to seek truth within himmself....if he is there, and i certainly hope he isn't, it's because of his own pride. Pride is always what keeps people from Christ, but pride is not arrogance, for arrogance is the result of pride.....pride is far more subtle, and EVERYONE is born into it. The ONLY WAY out of it, is through Jesus Christ. What is pride? According to what God has specifically said...."Pride is the desire to command respect" It's the desire to very subtly manipulate and coerce respect from others so that we can perceive ourselves to be just a bit better than those around us. Some of us attempt to do it by the cars we drive, the houses we build, the jobs we pursue, the people we marry etc etc, and Ghandi was not immune to this. He was born into it as we all are, and the only way out of it, is through the power of Christ. Two year olds know very well how to attempt to command respect, and they don't even know what the word means. Ghandi was a very good man by human standards, but if he died without Christ, then he died in his pride and will live with it for eternity. Pride is the one thing that people take with them, if they die without Christ and Satan has done his job well to hide the meaning of it, so that most people can never really see it. I'm hoping Ghandi was able to see his need for Christ in the final moments of his life....indeed I hope Hitler did.

Protestant clerical leaders together with Roman Catholic clerics are doing a terrific job of destroying the Christian faith. One worships a book and the other worships a pope. Neither believes in Jesus. There is actually not much left to do. Ninety percent of the Catholics have left that church even in Europe. The Protestants are Ninety percent "C&E" Christians. There is very little of left of the Christian faith seen in A.c.t.s. But then we (American people) had watched the destruction of most of the Bill of Rights and the lawyering away of the U.S. Cons.t.i.t.u..t.ion. Not a lot of time left on either of those things. But I am old so it is not my problem.

74% think Adam and Eve were real people?Yikes! I believe these are the same people who want to get rid of the department of education so they can destroy their own kids credibility in the real world..... You know, where people believe reality.I get it. Evolution is hard to understand, with the genes, DNA and mutations and all that while the bible has it all on page one.Maybe they are not stupid-just lazy. I think I would rather be a monkey.

The U.S. Department of Education is the only thing holding our kids together? (I don't think so). More than half of the U.S. citizenry thing Barby and Ken are real people and you are surprised by Adam and Eve? Throw in Norman Lear characters and Mrs. OIsen's coffee. I hate to break the news but you are a monkey. We are not of the cat family (feline) .. we are apes. We have learned a lot but we cannot actually point to incremental on going evolutionary change (so it too is only a theory). We really do not know. There is no evidence of wolves producing an occasional coyote or robins (birds) having blue jay off spring. There is also no evidence of Eden or Adam-Eve or even Gilgamesh or Abraham or Moses. There is evidence of Troy and Lucy and plenty of evidence of ... Barby and Ken (especially in south Orange County)..

"We have learned a lot but we cannot actually point to incremental on going evolutionary change (so it too is only a theory)."

      1) You're clearly not too familiar with the word "theory" as it pertains to science.
      2) The problem is you're simply unfamiliar with the evidence for evolution. There are many examples of exactly what you're looking for:

      http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/variation/stickleback/

"There is no evidence of wolves producing an occasional coyote or robins (birds) having blue jay off spring."

That's NOT how evolution works. Evolution works on populations diverging and adapting and evolving away from one another. A robin can only give birth to other robins. But a population of robins can split, become geographically separated, and adapt to unique environments, gradually evolving different morphologies, colors, and behaviors via the natural selection of random variations within each population. A bluejay magically popping out of a robin is very much more like Creationism than Evolution. Please educate yourself on the subject before speaking out again.

"Lazy", as in believing whatever their pastors have to say about evolution and it's affect upon a person's faith rather than researching and evaluating it for themselves then, ... yes! Lots of Christians out there actually understand evolution, accept it like the rest of us as the best answer, and it hasn't harmed their faith one bit.

None of these posts are about the actual subject! Come on!
I'm writing cos I just wanna say .... I dont actually believe that that many pastors actually believe what it says. It MUST be some form of corruption of the 6000 year thing. I'm genuinely concerned. I think churches can be awesome and really hold people together when they most need it. But if they are truly genuinely preaching such obvious garbage as this, then I'm concerned. We have to stand against such ignorance holding people back. That's not EVEN laughable. Tell me it's some revisionist view of the 6000 year creation myth – please. It's embarrassing. I still wanna have faith that people of faith aren't actually going full against knowledge of any type........

Some time back (19th century or so) the Protestant hierarchy decided that the bible is the "word of God." Well unfortunately that position is about as absurd as " the pope is infallible." Jesus said (Mark 8) avoid false doctrine (leaven of the Pharisee) and yet both of these policies are such positions. Every year that passes make these absurdities harder and harder to support BUT the churchmen go on insisting that they are right (and their churches are vanishing). They are painted into corners and unwilling to get out of the corners. They are destroying the Christian faith from the inside out .. it's almost done.

I'm willing to put my money up, I KNOW where I work and how old I am. Any chance you want to take me up on it? Of course I'd love to see a black jewish rabbi.

all i really need to say is fossils but lets be a bit more wordy about this shall we...ok, here we go, nice and easy, the earth is 4.5 billion years old and we came down from the trees at around 6 million years ago thats a time span of 4.4 billion years and some odd 994 million years where many other creatures ruled this earth for longer and in more harmony then us. We are just babies. Heres an excerpt from something i worte years ago – "It helps to underline how unimportant we humans really are in the overall scheme of things. In the sense of geological time, we have only just drawn our first breath." Creating this illusion that we are as old as the planet and rule it due thanks to a god that which created all things but we are special above all for it gave us its image – thats a god complex to the T ... and not to mention how conceded of anyone to believe that we are special...the cone snail of australia is far more special then us... how about the trees that live for thousands of years while we have a mere average of 80 years to live but yet spend the time doing things that knowingly shorten our lives – we aren't only not special but a rather destructive and ignorant species that will if the planet doesnt kill us off first destroy the world in which we live.

hippypoet, why don't Christians take the real topic of why you folks want to stay spiritually and emotionally stunted without righteous outcomes because you only learned 1st to 2nd grade of Jesus' truth. Science uncovers our universe and they did a good job uncovering how you Peter/Patricia Pans of the world that refuse to grow up, hide behind them to reject Jesus and not ever growing up.

      Amen.

      January 11, 2012 at 4:57 pm |
    • What?

"hide behind them to reject Jesus and not ever growing up."

Just because you've read the bible doesn't make you mature. Christians from all walks of life claiming jesus's truth have done horrific and childish things. H.S. you missed this life lesson. Emotional maturity is defined as: the ability to express one’s own feelings and convictions balanced with consideration for the thoughts and feelings of others. It seems you still need to learn that lesson based on your posts on this blog.

In addition, I will provide multiple sources to demonstrate the true authorship of the ideas.

"Growing up" is taking responsibility for the wrongs you've done, and not begging some invisible "Father" to simply forgive you. "Growing up" is accepting that your life will end... Really end.
"Growing up" means putting away childish beliefs and living in a fantasy world.
Come on, isn't it time to become an adult?

hello TL... i can't really prove to you that i wrote what i say i did... which i thought was something of a joke here – saying things you can't prove... granted i did write it, the only way i can show you the truth is if we were to meet in person in order for me to show you the paper i wrote when i was 18 ... but being that will most likely never take place...are you a religious person? take it on faith! i noticed you posted on the other article as well – that sounds like a fun game, do a revised version cause your rules are lacking and there is no need of me to play with your rules over the game...so have at it....i am interested!

Rick W. The price of oil has nothing to do with its origins. That is an economic issue. We are running out of oil (and coal and natural gas) becuase we are using it so fast. If we used it at a slower rate than it gradually formed, we wouldn't. No, St. Helens did not produce petrified trees. that takes hundreds of thousands or millions of years – for the minerals to replace the original biological matter.

Look, you can try all you want, but your Iron Age sky-fairy is not an explanation for anything.
