On call with conservatives, Romney speaks to Mormon beliefs

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN

(CNN) – In a recent conference call with conservatives across the country, Mitt Romney expounded upon subjects he usually doesn’t talk much about: Jesus and eternity.

Asked on the call how his faith had shaped his success as a businessman and his political career, the presidential candidate spoke about “a conviction that life is eternal, that your family is your greatest prize, that ultimately what we accomplish in life is of little significance compared to the interests of the savior Jesus Christ and his purposes.”

“It puts everything into perspective and the perspective is that there are things more important than the here and now,” Romney continued on the Wednesday call, which was organized by the Faith and Freedom Coalition and included thousands of participants.

His answer may sound to some like boilerplate Christian thinking, but Romney was expressing core Mormon beliefs in a way he almost never does on the campaign trail.

“I had not heard him speak that openly about his faith in a public setting prior to last night,” said Gary Marx, a former Romney aide who is executive director of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, in an interview on Thursday.

Romney almost always deflects questions about his Mormon beliefs. He answered a question about how his religion would affect his presidency at Thursday’s CNN debate by talking about the Founding Fathers’ belief that rights came from God, as opposed to talking about his Mormonism.

Romney campaign spokeswoman man Andrea Saul said it was not unusual for Romney to talk publicly about his faith in public and in news media interviews. "Last campaign, he gave an entire speech on his faith," she said in an e-mail message.

In speaking about his views of eternity on Wednesday, answering a question from a caller based in Atlanta, Romney was echoing Mormon beliefs about the eternal nature of human existence.

“Earth life, as Mormons would put it, is just a tiny moment in eternity because Mormons believe that the spirit exists before there is life and that life is just one short episode in the total journey to becoming more like God,” said Richard Bushman, a Mormon scholar at Columbia University.

“It’s a Mormon way of coping with suffering in this life,” said Bushman, who is Mormon. “You don’t get upset about failures.”

Romney reinforced that sentiment repeatedly in the Wednesday conference call, hosted by conservative activist Ralph Reed, the founder of the Faith and Freedom Coalition.

“What we’re experiencing here is just a moment in time which will soon be replaced by an eternity with our father in heaven,” Romney said.

“Sometimes in daily activities you think about all the implications of what’s happening, based upon how people think of you or what’s going to happen to your financial success,” he continued. “And you stop and think a second, what is the eternal implication of what’s going on here?”

Romney’s remarks about his faith also echoed Mormon teaching on the importance of family, which Mormons believe remains intact after death.

“At the end of the day, when Ann and I are getting ready for bed, we’re talking about the day’s events, we remind ourselves about what matters most to us,” Romney said. “Our family and our relationship with each other and our absolute conviction that Jesus Christ is our savior.”

Lot's of Mormon bashing on here. No body mentions that the real reason not to vote for Romney is because he is a liberal.

The same arguments that are used against Romney were used against Kennedy as a Catholic. I am a conservative Christian, and I would vote for a Mormon if he upheld conservative Christian principles. But Romney is a NE liberal.

All goes to show that if Romney becomes President, we'll be a country lead by the rich, for the rich, with lots of advice from Salt Lake City, with the shrinking middle class taking in the shorts and paying all the bills.

  3. Wondering

I wonder this: The Mormon Church did not allow black people to hold the priesthood until 1978. Was it because their god changed his mind in 1978 and revealed that to them? If so, what kind of god would discriminate against black people until 1978? Or was god always against discrimination against black people, but didn't tell his prophets until then. If so, what kind of god would let his church discriminate in his name? What else might the Mormon god be holding back from the prophets. Gay marriage, maybe?

      @Wondering:
Consider your own wording used here:
Jesus Christ's apostles did not allow Gentile people to be baptized into the Church until after Peter's vision (Acts 10-11) of the animals. Was it because their God changed his mind and revealed that to them? If so, what kind of god would discriminate against Gentile people until after Christ himself was crucified and left the earth? Or was God always against discrimination against Gentile people, but didn't tell his prophets until then. If so, what kind of god would let his church discriminate in his name? What else might the Christian god be holding back from the prophets.

God doesn't discriminate. But He does choose a time and place for everything.

God hasn't finished His work on the earth until every one of His children, whom He loves, come home to Him. http://www.mormon.org

The Mormon Church also changed its views on Polygamy when it became politically expedient to do so, and guess who told them it was time to change? That’s right, their imaginary friend in the sky! Other franchises of Christianity have changed dogma at times among a variety of topics. Eventually the behavior that was desired to control people at the formation of the religion becomes too impractical and the religion has to change to retain membership.
You don’t need religion to do good things and help others, but it is sure does come in handy when need to excuse and justify appalling behavior.

LDS is a cult. A BIG cult, but a cult nevertheless. Monitoring their people, spying on them, controlling everyday aspects of their lives. Very scary to me, and, saying the bible is the word of god, when, after looking at the history, it's the words of many mortal men (no women of course) .... brainwashing at its worst......Christians and Mormons.

Why I am a Mormon. Because Joseph Smith was a true prophet. False prophets are always alone when they have their "visions". That is because it never happened to put it nicely. Joseph Smith had witnesses to everything he said. Witnesses are central to the gospel. Paul said, "In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established." Here is the testimony of the 3 witnesses to the Book of Mormon as set forth in the introduction to the Book of Mormon:
"Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That we, through the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, that we beheld and bear record that these things are true. And it is marvelous in our eyes. Nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found spotless before the judgment-seat of Christ, and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen.

    Oliver Cowdery
    David Whitmer
    Martin Harris"
That is the difference between Joseph Smith and the false prophets – JOSEPH SMITH HAD WITNESSES!

      @abinadi

If witnesses are so important, what is the whole "walk by faith and not by sight" saying? When athiests ask for proof of some kind, I often see responses to the order of "They wouldn't call it faith if God just showed himself to everyone." So why would God/Angels show themselves to just Joseph and a few witnesses and not too anyone else? Even if he did why does that make his story more believable.

      abinadi,

–Joseph Smith said Dec 16, 1838, "Such characters as McLellin, John Witmer, David Witmer, Oliver Cowdry, and Martin Harris are too mean to mention; and we had liked to have forgotten them." History of the Church, Vol 3, p232

–Brigham Young said, "Some of the Witnesses of the Book of Mormon, who handled the plates and conversed with the angels of God, were afterwards left to doubt and to disbelieve that they had ever seen an angel." (Journal of Discourses, Vol 7, page 164, 1859, Brigham Young.)

–All three witnesses were eventually excommunicated from the Mormon church.

–Two of the three witnesses who were excommunicated from the Mormon church later returned to the church after denying their testimony. Imagine if any one of the apostles denied their witness that Jesus rose from the dead, were kicked out of the early church, then returned again. Their testimony would be of no value. Remember that all three denied the Mormon faith at one point, and one never came back to the Mormon church going to his grave denying his testimony, yet Mormons still use his testimony for the book of Mormon. In fact, David Whitmer never returned to the LDS church that he was a witness for, but joined splinter groups that denied the original LDS church he was first a member of.

We are also ent itled to a witness as individuals that we not be deceived. In the Book of Mormon, God gave the following promise to every one who will read the Book of Mormon with si ncerity and faith:
" 4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sin cere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost."

5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things."
Some of you may have gotten a witness as you read these words. The Lord's sheep know his voice and the truth will have a familiar ring to them. I want to say that I have received that witness and I know of a surety that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God. You can get more information at mormon.org.

      For example:

I U, I have watched several people become atheists. It starts in their youth. They get involved with sin and like it. Then when parents and leaders tell them they need to quit, they become combative and rebellious. They deny God because if they admit God exists, they will have to give up their sins and they love their sins more than God. We all must begin with faith. You must begin with faith on everything. If an engineer builds a bridge, he must rely on faith until the bridge is finished. Likewise, if you want to know God, you must exercise faith as you seek him out. You are in the right way. Just press ahead and you will find that "well springing up into eternal life" spoken of in John 4:14.

Religion is not about belief, it is about behavior – what you must, may and are forbidden to wear, eat, read, say…etc. This is why there are so many franchises of Christianity. Each was created by a person or group of people to fulfill a certain behavioral need, prevent change and control others. The irony is that the central message of Christianity, treating others as you would like to be treated, is completely overshadowed by the obsession with the rules of the trivial behavior mentioned above.

    Why I am a mormon. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is based on the teachings of Christ and the New Testament. Christ founded his church on apostles and prophets. Ephesians 2 states: "19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;"
    Apostles and prophets are absolutely essential because they hold the keys to the priesthood. If the apostles all die, the authority is lost along with revelation; we no longer know the mind and will of God and Christ is no longer the "chief cornerstone". False teachers and priests arise and we are "carried about with every wind of doctrine". Paul taught in Ephesians 4: "11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;"
Without apostles and prophets we cannot come to a "unity of the faith" nor be perfected in Christ. Without a prophet who speaks authoritatively the will of God, only confusion can reign as people argue what God meant and uninspired men tamper with the holy scriptures!

Christ taught in John 15: "16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you." Christ intended that he, himself, would be at the head of his church through revelation. That is why a man must be chosen of God through revelation to represent him and to preach his holy word – a thing that protestant churches totally lack because they apostatized from the Catholic church and which the catholic church cannot claim either because the first pope was a bishop, not an apostle, and to this day can claim no authority from living apostles.

Odds are that you are a Mormon because your parents were Mormons and you were taught as a child that it was the correct religion by adult authority figures and most people you knew held the same beliefs, just as ancient Greek children were taught that the source lightening was Zeus hurling bolts of lightning from Mt. Olympus. You remain a Mormon because it rationalizes your behavior.

Also, I found this on a Mormon discussion group regarding whether women should wear their bras over or under the garment:

"I could never stand to wear it over and felt bad that I wore it under. After about 20 years I finally asked my Bishop what the rule was and he said it didn't matter one way or the other and if it was more comfortable to wear it under that it was fine.
If your Bishop says differently, you just have to ask around until you find one that agrees."

    Dear Mitt,

In case you missed this in class:

    One more time:

Jesus was an illiterate Jewish peasant/carpenter/simple preacher man who suffered from hallucinations (or “mythicizing” from P, M, M, L and J) and who has been characterized anywhere from the Messiah from Nazareth to a mythical character from mythical Nazareth to a ma-mzer from Nazareth (Professor Bruce Chilton, in his book Rabbi Jesus). An-alyses of Jesus’ life by many contemporary NT scholars (e.g. Professors Ludemann, Crossan, Borg and Fredriksen, ) via the NT and related doc-uments have concluded that only about 30% of Jesus' sayings and ways noted in the NT were authentic. The rest being embellishments (e.g. miracles)/hallucinations made/had by the NT authors to impress various Christian, Jewish and Pagan sects.

The 30% of the NT that is "authentic Jesus" like everything in life was borrowed/plagiarized and/or improved from those who came before. In Jesus' case, it was the ways and sayings of the Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Hitt-ites, Canaanites, OT, John the Baptizer and possibly the ways and sayings of traveling Greek Cynics.

    earlychristianwritings.com/theories.html

For added "pizzazz", Catholic theologians divided god the singularity into three persons and invented atonement as an added guilt trip for the "pew people" to go along with this trinity of overseers. By doing so, they made god the padre into god the "filicider".

    Current RCC problems:

Pedophiliac priests, an all-male, mostly white hierarchy, atonement theology and original sin!!!!

Luther, Calvin, Joe Smith, Henry VIII, Wesley, Roger Williams, the Great “Babs” et al, founders of Christian-based religions or combination religions also suffered from the belief in/hallucinations of "pretty wingie thingie" visits and "prophecies" for profits analogous to the myths of Catholicism (resurrections, apparitions, ascensions and immacu-late co-nceptions).

    Current problems:
Adulterous preachers, pedophiliac clerics, "propheteering/ profiteering" evangelicals and atonement theology,

Why not have a universal primary, on the same day, for both parties (or hopefully, more than 2 parties) in all states? That way, we would all have the same power as people in Iowa, New Hampshire, S. Carolina and Florida. Why not have the president elected by popular vote, so that my vote in Texas won't be meaningless, as Texas always gives it's electoral vote to a Repugnant? Most importantly, why not get the corruption of money out of politics?

Your comments are ignorant and classless – why don't you demonstrate some intelligence of your own, and stop commenting on articles.

I understood your point, but the fact that your illiterate does nothing to reinforce it's religious foundation.

Why I am a mormon. Mormon is a nickname given to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We call ourselves saints because that is what the Christians called themselves in Jesus’ time. It is Latter-days because we are the Church of Jesus Christ of modern times which are the latter days. The church is organized on the same principles as the original and ancient church of Jesus Christ on the foundation of living apostles and prophets and with priesthood authority from God. Our beliefs are summarized by the Articles of Faith:

“We believe in God the eternal Father, and in His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
“We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.
“We believe that through the atonement of Christ all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
“We believe that the first principle[s] and ordinances of the Gospel are: (1) Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; (2) Repentance; (3) Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; (4) Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
“We believe that a man must be called of God by prophecy and by the laying on hands, by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
“We believe in the same organization that existed in the primitive Church, viz: apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, etc.
“We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, etc.
“We believe the Bible to be the word of God, as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
“We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
“We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion will be built upon this [the American] continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
“We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the di ctates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
“We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers and magistrates, in obeying[,] honoring, and sustaining the law.
“We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul, ‘We believe all thing[s], we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report, or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.
    “Respectfully, &c., Joseph Smith”

The Apostles' Creed 2011: (updated by yours truly based on the studies of NT historians and theologians of the past 200 years)

Should I believe in a god whose existence cannot be proven
and said god if he/she/it exists resides in an unproven,
human-created, spirit state of bliss called heaven?????

I believe there was a 1st century CE, Jewish, simple,
preacher-man who was conceived by a Jewish carpenter
named Joseph living in Nazareth and born of a young Jewish
girl named Mary. (Some say he was a mamzer.)

Jesus was summarily crucified for being a temple rabble-rouser by
the Roman troops in Jerusalem serving under Pontius Pilate,

He was buried in an unmarked grave and still lies
a-mouldering in the ground somewhere outside of
      Jerusalem.

Said Jesus' story was embellished and "mythicized" by
many semi-fiction writers. A bodily resurrection and
ascension stories were promulgated to compete with the
Caesar myths. Said stories were so popular that they
grew into a religion known today as Catholicism/Christianity
and featuring dark-age, daily wine to blood and bread to body rituals
called the eucharistic sacrifice of the non-atoning Jesus.

      Amen

Let's not leave out the all-important Mormon magic underwear and the belief that Mitt will become an actual god and rule his own planet when he dies.
Why do you leave out these fundamental Mormon beliefs?

    • Fact Valildates Faith

In response to Mormonism where is the factual evidence from what this Faith is based on:
      1) Prove that reformed Eygptian is a true language
      2) Provide a map showing the journey in American the Nephites and the Moronites took to establish themselves will validating their establisments
      3) The Book of Abraham has been proven false so why is still accepted as scripture
      4) Joseph Smith was not a Jew or part of the tribe Levi, but believed that the rights of the priesthood was given to him. Why God give priesthood rights to man that was not a Jew or a Levite and after Christ rose from the dead temple practice was to be no more?

Just some things to think about before trying to validate Mormonism

Joseph believed in living this out by marrying multiple women because if he didn't there would be no way for him to remain chaste.

Rom-money, as a Mormon, is anti-caffeine, and that is un-American. If he wins, his first act will be to ban coffee drinking. That's the real reason the Tea Party doesn't like him.
