Opinion: Why I fight to uphold traditional marriage in Washington

On Wednesday afternoon, Washington's House passed a same-sex marriage bill, 53-43. The state Senate has already passed it, and Gov. Chris Gregoire has promised to sign it. Opponents of  the bill are promising to put the issue on the ballot this November.

(CNN) – Why do I stand so strong in support of traditional marriage? Because I am a pastor of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I am a shepherd that is supposed to lead, feed and protect the flock. Anything the bible says is good for society, I stand on it and I will not compromise on it. What the bible says is good for society has always proven to be good. Anything the bible says is wrong for society has always proven to be wrong.  There have never been any winners in a scenario where society went against what God said would be good.

    this is from our declaration of independence. all men are created equal and due to amendments females as well, so if a straight couple can marry so can a same gender couple marry. it is only the religious fanatics that have a problem with this. here is some truth that needs to be put out. churches, etc DO NOT marry you.....they can do the ceremony but you have to turn in to the state the paperwork for the state to approve you of being married. a mormon church can marry four women to one man, however when the paperwork is sent to the state the state will deny that marriage,same if a church tries to marry a minor to an old man; the state marries people. so if the church doesn't want to do the ceremony for a same gender couple then don't, the state can still marry them because the church has no say so over the government.

      No. The Equal Rights Amendment for women did not pass. A large part if the country does not consider us equal and do not believe we have rights.

    Because I don't agree with you does that give you the right claimed by Calvin, Aquinas and many others that you have the right to KILL ME? The Catholic church has not renounced its right to burn non-Catholics at the stake – it is 2012.

    The Catholic Church and Adolph Hitler helped Franco establish a Fascist dictatorship in Spain and last year Mr Ratzinger lamented the end of fascism (1974) and the establishment of democracy in a speech in Spain. Do you also support Fascism

    How extreme are your views? Shoudl we not consider you as dangerous as Franco or Santorum or the protector of pedophilia?

    Hates spins a lot of ways – Christ did not justify any of them and he did not justify you. You are not turning the other cheek. You are no shepard you are a hater. If you insist on using the Bible as a shield of your hatred must you not accept Genesis 9:25-27 and tell your parishoners they must accept slavery?

      It makes me sad that colored people would dare to impose upon other people's freedoms especially when it took over 300 years for African Americans to get rights. This man is no different then any other religious fanatic that said colored people shouldn't be given rights. I don't understand why someone would do this after experiencing discrimination and hate himself.

    Tell me, Pastor Hutcherson, what does your made up book say about you being overweight and gluttonous? What does Leviticus say should be done to you for daring to wear a shirt that is of a different type of cloth than your jacket or tie? The day you're willing to live by the full principles of your religion's text, then you can come back and tell everyone else who they can marry based on that text. Oh, that's right, you won't be able to do that because you'd either be executed as a heretic or a living hypocrite. Never mind.

    Christianity also did not come to Africa by force. Many missionaries are buried here who never shot a gun. the slave castles were restricted to the coast and colonialisation only began in mid-19th century after many churches had already been established. It was the machine gun not X'tianity.

    Organized religion is first and foremost about control and power. Always has been. Kings allowed the church to do their thing, and in turn, the church validated the 'divine right' to rule. In exchange, the church was allowed to grow very rich and powerful, and they will never let go of that control, or give up that wealth. Everything the bible says is good for society? Really? Like stoning, and slavery, and the various other barbarian things people did back then? How can anyone study the gospels of Jesus Christ and think for a second that he would be against love in any genuine form? Reverend, you're a moron!

    Reverend Kenneth Hutcherson: You follow the religion that enslaved America's African ancestors. Think about that for a moment. Your ancestors which were forced to come to the new world as unpaid servants. To spent their lives working to enrich what were considered 'Good Christian' families. Christianity came to Africa through force. They stole their bodies. Now they continue to steal their minds.

      The American government does not provide $6.4b in aid to Africa each year because of Christianity. Since the founding of the United states and enshrined in the Treaty of Tripoli in 1791, the United States is NOT a Christian country. But not being an American you think you can just make up whatever you want about our country to justify hatred that you hold for anyone else.

      Like the neo-fascist movement in the United States you are quick to use words you clearly don't understand. Your hatred of people who disagree with you is so clear when you pretend everyone else is a communist or a Nazi. Look in the mirror and see how sad you are as a human being. Ask yourself what will Christ have to say about your behavior? His was not a gospel of hatred, yours apparently is.

    The country, and Washington State, have many serious problems and the threat to traditional marriage is NOT in the top 100 list.
    The Rev. should focus on trying to instill a little honesty, integrity and ethics in our public servants. A little would go a long way.

You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

      Also the slavery in the Bible and West Africa was so different from that of the Americas that the AFRICANS never comprehended the brutalities that was visited on the slaves. This was the reason for abolitionism. The slaves were prisoners for life in ur culture. In ours they were bondservants.

      In fact I also wonder why atheists quote so many authorities to defend their faith, we dont? In our case however the ministers organise the communities for work-evangelism, charitable works and keep peace not to be middlemen. Only one minister claims that he is a middleman and that is the RCC Pope.

    The Bible also says that parents should kill their disobedient children and that God doesn't mind if you keep slaves. Is that good for society, too?

      If you gave up your child to police you do the same so why are u complaining? If it is the word kill then don't confuse it with murder. If my son was an armed robber and I advise him to stop and he won't i'll hand him over even if he faces the death penalty.

      @ Nii.... crime and disobedience are two different things. The way I see it, if a father wants his 18 yo daughter to marry the 80 yo neighbor and she refuses, this is disobedience and she should be killed.

      Who said the Greeks had secular government? You don't read history too, do you? Look the American democracy owes more to Presbyterian Christianity than Athenian democracy. Read your history books, the Bible and maybe Socrates or Aristotle. If you do not know anything don't spin jazz.

    So basically what you are saying in this article is, because you have such a fervent death grip on an old collection of myths, somehow that gives you the right to dictate how everyone should live their life. Am I right in understanding your view? Tell you what, Mr. Hutcherson: If you can present even one shred of evidence to back up your statements about what "god" hath wrot, perhaps I might listen to you, but right now you have basically written the equivalent of what the street corner loon rants about to anyone who will listen, and frankly that doesn't make you much of an authority in my eyes. If you don't like gay marriages, don't have one.

So, how is it that the Greeks came up with such a wonderful secular democratic concept of government before the bible was written? Also why does this "ethical" book say that it is ok to own slaves, beat your wife and murder people with whom you disagree?
