Mrs Obama urges faith based groups to join healthy eating campaign

By Alexander Mooney, CNN

(CNN)–First Lady Michelle Obama made a stop at the Northland Church in Florida Saturday, bringing her healthy-eating campaign to a crowd that included religious organizations affiliated with a broad swath of faiths and congregations.

In her remarks at the Central Florida evangelical mega-church where Joel Hunter serves as pastor, the first lady made the case that religious organizations can be natural partners in her efforts to combat childhood obesity.

“Our faith communities don’t tend only to folks’ spiritual health but to their emotional and their physical health as well,” she said. “Think for a moment about the scripture that tells us that your bodies are temples given to you by God. That is a core teaching of so many of our faiths — a teaching that calls us to honor and nourish the bodies we’ve been blessed with, and to help others do the same.”

Tom Tom if you want proof that spiritual people are moral irrespective of religious affiliation Read Mark Driscoll's blog. Check out the last thread posted by Dude. As to whether a God has a hand in it 1) I have experienced Him 2) I'm a better man for following His teaching 3) Other people have 2o

Oh, so now it's "spiritual people", not people who believe in a god? Nice flip-flop. You'd make a great pancake.

Nii: Just because you believe it to be, does not make it so!!! You can not prove your god exists and until you can we will not agree with you.

" I have experienced Him" – I'm just curious how you knew it was a him. Did he press up against you and you felt his bulge when you "experienced Him"? I have experienced a thousand different moments that I could have interpreted to be a "God" experience, life is full of them since it has nothing to do with God and everything to do with chemical, biological and emotional responses to stimulus. You and everyone who thinks they are better people for listening to that voice in your head that said "Hey, maybe you shouldn't be such a selfish sack and be good to others" have experienced an evolved emotional response that enables us to feel or empathize with others which is the root of the golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do to you. I'm happy that you have touched into your empathy, but that is no reason to give it a name and a penis and start praying to it.

What exactly did you experience when you "experienced him"? And how could you tell "he" was male? And what does it mean for a non-biological ent-ity to be male?

Tom Tom I have been talking about Christian spirituality and the Obamas being an eg of that. Were u not following the thread when u joined? Or typically you just wrote using a few of the words I wrote? You talked about morality and I told u it was not religious. Did that also not ring a bell?

Tom I was talking about the Obamas being an example of Christiam spirituality. Why weren't u reading the thread? When you talked of morality I said it was not religious Didn't that also ring a bell? I have been developing the theme of spirituality. Did u not notice. Don't badmouth me.

God keep our land prayerfully borrowed from Canadian national anthem in memory of dead Darwin,
Darwin was a Christian and was troubled on his deathbed by the controversy he had started . Apparently some had been misinterpreting his theories to challenge the very existence of God. This was the farthest thing from his mind when he wrote his theory. To this day it remains unproven theory.

As everyone knows, Prayer is power, so I ask you, if praying can heal the sick and perform miracles then why can't praying make corn syrup and gravy have fewer calories? That's right! It's the new Christian Praywatchers!! The bible belt has just praying for the wrong thing! No more praying for self control, just pray the fat injected, sugar coated, syrup filled fast food yall love so much doesn't do any damage!! And while your at it you might as well pray those smoke stained teeth away as well instead of giving up the cig's! Anyone for nicotine toothpaste? Your kid's will be addicted to brushing!! No more dragging yourself before the mirror! You'll be running in there to brush every hour and a half! Brought to you by "Simpler Times for Simpler Minds"...

Mrs. Obama is so inspiring. I think she handled the "god's temple/ so many of our faiths" thing very well. As an atheist, I think that she is using the church and its audience appropriately.

    February 11, 2012 at 10:48 pm |
    • Nii Croffie

The Obamas are Christians. They are not serving a political interest here but the plain old belief that a privileged man must serve. This is what I admire about them though sometimes it gets too much to one side politically.

      February 11, 2012 at 11:11 pm |
    • Nii Croffie

Accommodating other political, doctrinal, and ideological positions as well as other religions are an integral part of Christian spirituality. Obama has said he believes in loving your neighbor as yourself and these actions are the fruit of a spirituaally enlightened soul.

To see all people without any creed or religion and to treat every male and female on an equal footing is the basis for those who are secular. All religions have had their time and have shown that towards mankind their intentions are for power, control and wealth. And discrimination towards women and all that do not believe what they believe.

Romney believes that the horn-blowing angel Moroni appeared to the con artist Joe Smith. Not good for someone who wants to be president of any group !!!

Obama (and his wife) "mouths" that he (and his wife) is Christian i.e. believes in gay Gabriel and war-mongering Michael the Archangel and Satan. BO's support of abortion however vitiates has Christianity as he is the leader of the Immoral Majority who are now the largest voting block in the country. Immoral Majority you ask??

The 78 million voting "mothers and fathers" of aborted womb babies !!! (2012 -1973 Rowe vs. Wade = 39 years.

39 years x 2 million/yr = 78 million. Abortion rate in the USA as per the CDC is one million/yr.

And the presidential popular vote in 2008? 69,456,897 for pro-abortion/choice BO, 59,934,814 for "pro-life" JM. The population of the Immoral Majority in 2008? ~ 70 million !!!!!!

If The Obamas do not prove to you that religious Christians can be accommodating what about the framers of the Am er ic an Co ns ti tu tion. Not least the UCC. It is just of morality. God defines morality for us. We are to obey. If u can't u ask His forgiveness

      February 12, 2012 at 10:31 am |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Nii, god does not give anyone "morals". There is no evidence that Christians or any other 'believers' are more 'moral' than those who are atheists or agnostic.

      February 12, 2012 at 10:35 am |
    • Nii Croffie

God does give us our moral conscience and the power to obey it. However as to some religious people being more moral than some, it is not biblical. People of all religions can access this power of God which is called faith. This is not a religious affair.

      February 12, 2012 at 10:53 am |

Christians like Obama only appeal that Christians obey S Paul in judging those within and leaving those outside to their own devices. As to liberal Christians and loose-living Christians it is a matter of the Church helping them strengthen their faith.

The argument which is offered by Mr Obama and Christians on the left is that the Church judge those within only as S. Paul says and leave those outside to their own judgement. This is not something imposed by secular authority but an age-old principle.

There are different opinions as to what a religion really is or what a non-profit is. To be fair therefore, there should be no tax-exemptions for any group and that includes the Democratic and Republican Parties. Faith and community initiative grant monies should also be cancelled and there should also be no tax deductions for contributions made to charities and non-profits.

    February 11, 2012 at 5:40 pm |

Simplify the tax code while you're at it. There should also be no distinctions between types of revenue – no special rates for capital gains or investment income of any kind. No exemptions or write-offs.
