Columnist Dan Savage stands by comments on 'bulls**t in the Bible'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Columnist and gay-rights advocate Dan Savage is standing by his comment that “we can learn to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about gay people” at a recent conference for high school students, a line that prompted some to walk out and spurred intense online debate.

In a blog post on Sunday, Savage wrote that his remark at a conference for the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association was "being spun as an attack on Christianity. Which is bullshhh… which is untrue.”

“I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised," Savage wrote. "I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against — and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying 'motivated by faith') — because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong.”

Some Christian students walked out of the Seattle speech, prompting another controversial line from Savage: “It’s funny to someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansya**ed people react when you push back.”

Savage apologized for that specific remark in Sunday’s blog post, writing that his word choice “was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong.”

One of the teachers attending the speech with his students told CNN’s Carol Costello on Monday that he was taken aback by the speech and that he supported the decision of some of his students to walk out of it.

“It took a real dark, hostile turn, certainly, as I saw it,” said Rick Tuttle, a teacher at Sutter Union High School in Southern California. “It became very hostile toward Christianity, to the point that many students did walk out, including some of my students.”

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

“They felt that they were attacked … a very pointed, direct attack on one particular group of students. It’s amazing that we go to an anti-bullying speech and one group of students is picked on in particular, with harsh, profane language.”

Too many Christians are hypocrites. They bash people and are greedy and racist and think that being Christian protects them from retribution. Worse, anyone who thinks the Bible is a science book needs to talk to a Rabbi–an expert on the Old Testament. The Bible has some really wonderful human truths in it, and some really political contradictions.

No Ting, He was not gay.
      And Hewas not bi.
Where do you get your information?
How about going to the source.
Contrary to what the unbelievers say: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and He and God are one with each other and the Holy Spirit. The bible is the Word of God. If you really want to know the truth try reading the gospel of John with a sincere motivation- to know the truth about God, Christ and redemption. Those who have chosen the path that leads to life are on a journey that leads to eternal life. We are not perfect but we have taken the most important first step.

why don't you read the bible for yourself instead of letting your minister cherry pick passages to read to you on sunday moning? read the bible cover to cover and you'll likely be an atheist before you finish the OT.

I think they were actually pointing out the absurdity of a person who is anti-bullying, using a pulpit to bully others because of a difference of belief. Unfortunately, that kind of logic is lost on partisans who only care about their own opinion.

  11. John1518

I feel sorry for gays. They fought to end bullying – which is absolutely wrong even if you disagree with their lifestyle choice as I do (after all, I am not better) – but now the gay rights movement apparently thinks it is ok to bully those who would disagree with them. They have become what they fought against. Sad.

    April 30, 2012 at 9:19 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Gosh. Why don't you try replacing the word "gays" with "blacks" in your post and see how that plays out?

      April 30, 2012 at 9:21 pm |
    • momoya

Really?? You're going to judge an entire community based on one guy and one event?? wow.

      April 30, 2012 at 9:22 pm |
    • John1518

Not community – I said "movement". This is a pattern, and you know that. Anyone who says anything gets blasted by the "movement", not by all gays people. Also, if black people bullied white people, then yes – I would say the same exact thing about it being wrong.

      April 30, 2012 at 9:25 pm |
    • jk105

Calling what happened "bullying" is a straight-forward lie.
I was bashed over the head with pipes by a straight gang. I would trade bullying experiences with those so-called Christians students in a second!!

      April 30, 2012 at 9:26 pm |
    • Really-O?

Has anyone considered that Mr. Sava.ge's "bible B.S." comment was an intentional oratorical device used to draw attention to this grossly neglected civil rights issue (this is the 21st century, after all, and there are still state consti.tutions which deny the civil right of marriage to those of the same se.x)?

      April 30, 2012 at 9:32 pm |
    • momoya

If you're just going quibble over semantics instead of facing up to your generalizations, then what's the point?

      April 30, 2012 at 9:33 pm |
    • John1518

jk105: I would say what you experience is obviously worse bullying, but I would still say that what he did was bullying. Anytime you hammer a person with cruel words designed to make them feel like an outcast, that is bullying. For you to say that is ok only encourages more behavior like those idiots who attacked you.

      April 30, 2012 at 9:34 pm |
    • John1518

The Bible does NOT tell people to murder gays. Maybe you should try studying scripture instead of picking out passages where you don't understand the context at all.

      April 30, 2012 at 9:38 pm |
    • Really-O?

      @John1518-
Ah, the "context" argument. Have you been studying the bible with Chad?

      April 30, 2012 at 9:42 pm |
    • Bootyfunk

      @John
i've already posted Leviticus 20:13 once, but here ya go:
20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

so John, care to admit you've never actually read the bible? because you obviously don't know what it says. don't worry, us atheists that have actually read the bible can teach you.

      April 30, 2012 at 9:42 pm |
    • Observer

      John1518,

Speaking of not understanding what they are talking about:

      – Leviticus 20:13 “If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death.”

Do Christians read more than a few words of the Bible? Why not read it?

      April 30, 2012 at 9:44 pm |
    • Really-O?

Thanks Booty. So, John1518 – how about explaining to us heathens exactly how "context" changes the meaning of Leviticus 20:13?

For centuries, Christianity was a dominant form of terrorism. It's not like he's shoving a sword down passed a person's collar bone while trying to puncture their liver, just because they didn't conform to the god of war's religion. He's simply calling the Bible bulls**t because it contains a great deal of garbage that is no longer appropriate for civilized human beings. He represents a group that has been oppressed and bullied because of religious indoctrination, and guess what...those that present the most hatred toward his group are those that derive their morals and values from the Bible.

    Romans 1:21-32

AKA "democrats in the Bible".... LOL

21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Allow them to see passed their perceived intelligence and give them a chance to see the light. Merciful Lord, who prayed that there be one flock and one shepherd, I ask the light of faith for those who do not know You. Give them the joy of Your protecting presence. Bring them into the one fold of which You are the master and Lord. Forgive them their sins as you have me and teach them the way of repentance. In the end bring them into the larger circle of Your family.
