Columnist Dan Savage stands by comments on 'bulls**t in the Bible'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Columnist and gay-rights advocate Dan Savage is standing by his comment that “we can learn to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about gay people” at a recent conference for high school students, a line that prompted some to walk out and spurred intense online debate.

In a blog post on Sunday, Savage wrote that his remark at a conference for the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association was "being spun as an attack on Christianity. Which is bullshhh… which is untrue.”

“I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised," Savage wrote. "I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against — and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying 'motivated by faith') — because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong.”

Some Christian students walked out of the Seattle speech, prompting another controversial line from Savage: “It’s funny to someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansya**ed people react when you push back.”

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Savage apologized for that specific remark in Sunday’s blog post, writing that his word choice “was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong.”

One of the teachers attending the speech with his students told CNN’s Carol Costello on Monday that he was taken aback by the speech and that he supported the decision of some of his students to walk out of it.

“It took a real dark, hostile turn, certainly, as I saw it,” said Rick Tuttle, a teacher at Sutter Union High School in Southern California. “It became very hostile toward Christianity, to the point that many students did walk out, including some of my students.”

“They felt that they were attacked … a very pointed, direct attack on one particular group of students. It’s amazing that we go to an anti-bullying speech and one group of students is picked on in particular, with harsh, profane language.”

BTW, only a blind, self-absorbed, arrogant moron could possibly believe in atheist fundamentalism, particularly in light of the fact the fundamentals of governmental atheism was responsible for more than 200 million deaths of innocent civilians ... and that doesn't include the the war on unborn babies.

Just another stupid Liberal who is so dumb, he can't even see his own hypocrisy. What this just proves, is how Progressives have lots of issues and uber thin skin. Why anyone listens to Liberals is beyond me, they are always wrong and always full of "HATE" for anyone and anything that doesn't march in jackbooted lockstep with them. Unfortunately, you can't ignore these Quislings because they are always yelling and screaming "Pay attention to me, pay attention to me, I'm important. This guy is a loser.

The Bible does not "endorse" slavery. It gives clear standards of how a slave should be treated and how a slave should act. If you believe that is endorsement, you think that the government endorses poverty.

Let's check. I'm an atheist (well, I don't believe in any God to be specific). I do not use drugs, lead a balanced, social life, I am happily married, do not cheat, and my biggest "crime" I have ever committed was running a red traffic light. Last time I checked, nobody considered me mentally ill (whether atheist or theist friends), If there was a Heaven, I didn't want to go there anyway because according to the above post most of the people I truly care about would go to Hell (again, if it existed). Then, I absolutely despise despots and dictators such as the ones mentioned.

I could address every single other item on this list, but long story short, this list is nothing more than a list of prejudices that show the intolerance of the author. And that is what really stuns me about many faithful people: Even though the Bible teaches tolerance (Jesus' only violent act against humans was to throw out the money changers from the temple), it is many people of faith (so as not to stereotype any further) who preach intolerance and even violence against anyone and anything that does not fit their respective worldview: Gay people, evolution, other religions or even denominations, people who stand with the poor and underprivileged (a.k.a Liberals), etc.

The Bible is clear on how we are to live. Jesus was clear when he said "Love your neighbor" and when he gave a new (the last) commandment, "Love one another, just as I have loved you, so must you love one another" It's amazing how God gives us free will to make choices, which all have a consequence. But when we whine when we make the choice we want, and a negative consequence comes from it. As people, we need to learn to deal with the consequences of the choices, or make better choices in life.

Paul states in Corinthians (13 1-13)
1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge ; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous ; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly ; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth ; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails ; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away ; if there are tongues, they will cease ; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part ; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child ; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face ; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three ; but the greatest of these is love.

    ONLY FOR THE NEWCOMERS–

    One more time: The Facts–

"Abrahamics" believe that their god created all of us and of course that includes the g-ay members of the human race. Also, those who have studied ho-mo-se-xuality have determined that there is no choice involved therefore ga-ys are ga-y because god made them that way.

    To wit:

o The Royal College of Psy-chiatrists stated in 2007:

“ Despite almost a century of psy-choanalytic and psy-chological speculation, there is no substantive evidence to support the suggestion that the nature of parenting or early childhood experiences play any role in the formation of a person’s fundamental heteros-exual or hom-ose-xual orientation. It would appear that s-exual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of ge-netic factors and the early ut-erine environment. Se-xual orientation is therefore not a choice.[60] "

"Garcia-Falgueras and Swaab state in the abstract of their 2010 study, "The fe-tal brain develops during the intraut-erine period in the male direction through a direct action of tes-tosterone on the developing nerve cells, or in the female direction through the absence of this hor-mone surge. In this way, our gender identi-ty (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender) and s-exual orientation are programmed or organized into our brain structures when we are still in the womb. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender ident–ity or s-exual orientation."[8

See also the Philadelphia Inquirer review “Gay Gene, Deconstructed”, 12/12/2011. Said review addresses the following “How do genes associated with ho-mose-xuality avoid being weeded out by Darwinian evolution?”

Of course, those gays who belong to Abrahamic religions are supposed to obey the rules of no adu-ltery or for-nication allowed.

And because of basic biology differences said monogamous ventures should always be called same-s-ex unions not same-s-ex marriages.

From below, on top, backwards, forwards, from this side of the Moon and from the other side too, gay se-xual activity is still mutual masturbation caused by one or more complex se-xual differences. Some differences are visually obvious in for example the complex maleness of DeGeneres, Billy Jean King and Rosie O'Donnell.

Yes, heteros-exuals practice many of the same "moves" but there is never a doubt who is the female and who is the male.

Gays should not be bullied – in the name of the Bible or otherwise.

However, Christians DO NOT have to approve of gays. And many of us don't. The more the gay activists ram their agenda down our throats, the more contentious THEY make this issue.

    May 1, 2012 at 7:46 am |
    • Rumplestilskin

Ramming a gay agenda down your throat? That tired old line is better used against a government run amok. Stop saying it about your moral issue about gays. Are you so weak that someone can ram anything down your throat? Once you get a backbone and enlighten your brain, you will understand that the gay issue has been going on, since man has been on earth, and no amount of biblical BS will change that.
What you moralist don't realize is that "Everything under Heaven", means that the umbrella of heaven covers all things, not just some you would wish to be acceptable to your emotions. If your God created the heavens and Earth and all things upon the earth, he created gay men and women as well. What you morons are not asking yourself is WHY. Why would God create what you think of as an abomination? Are you challenging God to a duel of morals? What a pathetic attempt to Anthropomorphize God, just so you feel good inside with your preconceived notions of what is SUPPOSED TO BE......

I don't know what school some atheists go to here, but I recall clearly that overly devout Christians were targets of bullying in my two high schools. it may not have gotten to being beaten up or stuffed in closets, but they were openy mocked, their faiths were seen as backward and they were called names. Even the kid who eventually was third in his grade was called stupid for asking questions about Darwin and evoluttion.

Mind you, I'm not a Christian, and am more of agnostic, but I know bullying when I see it.

  12. The bible burns faster than any other book

There's some ramrod running around here posting comments about people taking scripture out of context. Little do christians realize, atheists in the majority of cases know much more about the bible than they do. Why? Oh, maybe it's because we've read the bible time and again after having it crammed down our throats for years.

Dear christians, do yourselves a favor. Stop reading it under the biased pretense and false teachings of your middle-school educated pastors. Instead, actually read the useless thing. Stop ignoring what it says. If you can come away from a single unbiased reading of the bible from cover to cover and still be a christian, you either didn't pay attention, or you're just plain stupid. Those are the only two explanations.

Good day and I bid you a friendly bird.

A puddle deep analysis of how/why individuals come to either belief or disbelief is at the crux of an atheist who finds all believers stupid or a believer who simply condemns all who will not share his/her specific belief system out of hand. Since Atheism is a disbelief and has no specific philosophy/theology each individual must justify his/her own opinions on such matters, however Christianity has over 2000 years of vetting is no doubt one of the most studied, criticized, debated and discussed subjects on earth and so it is easy to say, as one who practices Catholicism (no doubt making me even more stupid than the average Christian), in paraphrasing Fulton Sheen's comment on this subject- there are not one hundred people who hate The Catholic Church(insert Christianity as well) , but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.

This poor sap suffers from narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Not uncommon in his social circle, breeding a kinship mentality which actually makes them think their behavior is morally correct. Further, when called out on their narcissistic behavior, they feel as if they're under attack (bullied), which they view as further evidence to support their position. It becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. Using the logic prescribed by the NPD suffering community, there are no winners, only (in their minds) attackers and victims.

  16. Why won't God Heal Amputees?

Can you imagine God sitting on his magnificent throne in heaven saying this?

"As the all-powerful, all-knowing creator of the universe, I shall write a book for my creation, and I shall call it The Bible. Let's see, what shall I put in it??? Well, I want to be SURE to write about my absolute endorsement of slavery in both the Old and the New Testaments - slavery is very important to me and I want people buying and selling slaves for thousands of years. And I want to be CERTAIN that the book shows how much I hate women in both the Old and the New Testaments. And I can NOT forget the parts about animal and human sacrifice, because sacrifices are an essential element of every proper religion. I want people slaughtering animals, splattering their blood and then burning the carcasses on a stone altar because the aroma is pleasing to me. And I want to make human sacrifice the centerpiece of my worship. And I CERTAINLY need to include the juicy parts about child massacre in both the Old and the New Testaments. Baby killing is something that I will emphasize throughout this book because it is very important to me."
Do you believe this? Of course not. Yet, clearly, if God does exist and God wrote the Bible, this is in fact what God said to himself. You have seen with your own eyes the numerous passages in the Bible where God displays these tendencies. Confirm them yourself by looking them up in God's word.

An all-knowing, all-loving God could not have written such appalling verses into the Bible. It should be obvious to you that primitive men wrote this book, not God.

Ah, the Left, and how they like to quote out of context and spread lies. Find slavery and actually read. It was not condoned, indeed when it was practiced by God's people of the day, it led to the great fall of their civilization. What, you didn't actually read that part? Oh, yeah, by enslaving the people of Canaan, Isreal sowed the seeds of their great woes for centuries.

In the New Testament, slavery is not endorsed. You see, the New Testament separates the believer from government. Paul, upon returning a slave, does not endorse slavery. However, this man was not his to set free. That would have been revolt against the government. He returned the slave, asking for this Christian to return to him (as Paul was not a slave owner, this would have in effect actually freed the slave). The address to slaves to be Godly and work their best does not defend slavery, but merely to tell all who believe that, in what ever state they find themselves, be the best they can be in honor of God.

Ah, but we cannot let the truths of the words (whether or not you believe in them) get in the way of what you want to say. Nothing new, here. Next you'll want to quote Leviticus without even the hint of why it exists (the enormity of the law being impossible to follow, pointing to a need for Christ).

Exodus 21:1-4: "If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he
shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. If he came in by
himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with
him. If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the
wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself."
Deuteronomy 15:12-18: "And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or
an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year
thou shalt let him go free from thee. And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou
shalt not let him go away empty: Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and
out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the LORD thy God hath
blessed thee thou shalt give unto him."
Exodus 21:7: "And if a man sell his daughter to be a
maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do."
Leviticus 25:44-46: "Your male and female
slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy
slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among
you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will
become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited
property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over
      your fellow Israelites ruthlessly." (NIV)
Leviticus 25:48-53: "After that he is sold he may be redeemed
again; one of his brethren may redeem him: Either his uncle, or his uncle's son, may
redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be
able, he may redeem himself. And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year
that he was sold to him unto the year of jubilee: and the price of his sale shall be
according unto the number of years, according to the time of an hired servant shall it be
      with him."

For a better understanding of the subject article we invite you to read the article ‘CNN Belief Blog ~ Sign of the Times’ listed on our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca and also the fifth item listed on the Current Events page.

All of the other pages and articles listed on our website explain the deep hidden mysteries of God and how and by whom this whole world has been deceived as confirmed in Revelation 12:9.

The Word of God is God (John1:1), it is truth and there is no lie in it (Hebrews 6:18).

Seek, and ye shall find (Matthew 7:7).

The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (1 Cor. 2:14). This includes the Book of Revelation.

For this reason our message remains the same: Ye must repent and turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan (whose spirit you are of) unto God (Acts 26:18). Without the baptism of Repentance you will remain spiritually blind (Mark 1:4.

Throw no pearls before swine. What can these people do to God? They congratulate themselves on their wisdom/insight/intelligence. If, as a believer, I am thought dull, ignorant, or misled, I take the labels with pride. I know my IQ, I know the degrees I have, I know the gifts God gave me, and they are for His glory alone. What will I care what others say when they mock? Others have endured far worse for His sake. When the end comes for us all, is it shall, then all believe – including those who lack it today.

"your opinion doesn't change reality..except in YOUR mind. Nothing personal"

Does that not apply to your god? Everyone of you seems to have a different take on what god is and how he does things? So does it not make sense that your own opinion might not change reality, except of course in your mind? So if this is the case, we have no way to verify that your god even exists...we can test for the things we believe in and we don't believe in your god because we can't test for it or find any evidence to say it ever has existed.

HR, not only have I read it, I teach it. Have you read it? I mean, have you actually read it beyond Leviticus? Have you read the passages that both precede and follow lines you like to take out of context?

I am not persecuted, if by your barbs you consider that persecuted. But, if by my faith you condemn or attack me verbally (or in text), then your disdain is a trifle. You really think that your mocking will somehow make me follow Christ and my God less or not at all?

As to the afterlife, I don't actually have to prove it. Neither do I have to prove gravity to a lonely rock floating in space. It will eventually discover the phenomena for itself. Or, shall you deny the atom because you can neither see nor feel it?

Gravity exists. Atoms and molecules CAN be seen with an electron microscope. Teaching is one thing, and it's a good thing. But teaching mythology to people, especially kids, and passing it off as "fact" in any way is dishonest, deceitful, and a lie. If someone wantsd to LEARN about it, that's something. But indoctrination is another matter entirely. Looking at your posts, it's a pretty sure bet as to which one it is that you do.

Davis wrote, "Have you read the passages that both precede and follow lines you like to take out of context?"

      I'll play – here are a few verses –

"At that time the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he went throughout the land of Gilead and Manasseh, including Mizpah in Gilead, and led an army against the Ammonites.  And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD. He said, "If you give me victory over the Ammonites, I will give to the LORD the first thing coming out of my house to greet me when I return in triumph.  I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering."

"So Jephthah led his army against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave him victory.  He thoroughly defeated the Ammonites from Aroer to an area near Minnith – twenty towns – and as far away as Abel-keramim. Thus Israel subdued the Ammonites.  When Jephthah returned home to Mizpah, his daughter – his only child – ran out to meet him, playing on a tambourine and dancing for joy.  When he saw her, he tore his clothes in anguish.  "My daughter!" he cried out.  "My heart is breaking!  What a tragedy that you came out to greet me. For I have made a vow to the LORD and cannot take it back."  And she said, "Father, you have made a promise to the LORD.  You must do to me what you have promised, for the LORD has given you a great victory over your enemies, the Ammonites.  But first let me go up and roam in the hills and weep with my friends for two months, because I will die a virgin."  "You may go," Jephthah said. And he let her go away for two months.  She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never have children.  When she returned home, her father kept his vow, and she died a virgin.  So it has become a custom in Israel for young Israelite women to go away for four days each year to lament the fate of Jephthah's daughter."   (Judges 11:29-40 NLT)

So, explain to us how we should properly spin this. Your sick twisted psychotic schizophrenic god had this putz torch his own freaking daughter, just because god let him win a fight. What other context do we need to know?

I have read the bible many times.. I studied it and ministered for almost 50 years.. I am now an atheists BECAUSE I researched the book I was using..

On atoms: We can detect them.. We cannot detect any "soul" "spirit" "spirit realm" "god" nor "sin.". If we can't detect whether or not something exists, there's no point believing in it.. People shouldn't believe non-falsifiable doctrines/world views because they have no way to know if it is a wrong belief.. Silly christians.
