Columnist Dan Savage stands by comments on 'bulls**t in the Bible'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Columnist and gay-rights advocate Dan Savage is standing by his comment that “we can learn to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about gay people” at a recent conference for high school students, a line that prompted some to walk out and spurred intense online debate.

In a blog post on Sunday, Savage wrote that his remark at a conference for the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association was "being spun as an attack on Christianity. Which is bullshhh… which is untrue.”

“I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised," Savage wrote. "I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against — and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying 'motivated by faith') — because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong.”

Some Christian students walked out of the Seattle speech, prompting another controversial line from Savage: “It’s funny to someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansya**ed people react when you push back.”

Savage apologized for that specific remark in Sunday’s blog post, writing that his word choice “was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong.”

One of the teachers attending the speech with his students told CNN’s Carol Costello on Monday that he was taken aback by the speech and that he supported the decision of some of his students to walk out of it.

“It took a real dark, hostile turn, certainly, as I saw it,” said Rick Tuttle, a teacher at Sutter Union High School in Southern California. “It became very hostile toward Christianity, to the point that many students did walk out, including some of my students.”

“They felt that they were attacked … a very pointed, direct attack on one particular group of students. It’s amazing that we go to an anti-bullying speech and one group of students is picked on in particular, with harsh, profane language.”

Top Ten Signs You're a Christian
10 – You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.
9 – You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.
8 – You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.
7 – Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees!
6 – You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.
5 – You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.
4 – You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs – though excluding those in all rival sects – will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."
3 – While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity.
2 – You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.
1 – You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history – but still call yourself a Christian.

      iN RESPONSE TO MARTOG –

Top Ten Signs You're a Christian
10 – You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours. AS WITH ALL RELIGIONS, I BELIEVE MINE TO BE TRUE. SO WHY IS IT YOU ONLY ATTACK CHRISTIANS WHEN EVERY RELIGION BELIEVES IT'S THE RIGHT ONE? NO CHRISTIANS I KNOW, NOR MYSELF BECOME "OUTRAGED" AT THE THOUGHT THAT SOMEONE DENIES MY FAITH, NOR DO I "DENY" ANYONE ELSE'S GOD EXISTS. WE COULD CARE LESS. IT IS LIBERALS THAT BECOME ENRAGED AT PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN JESUS SPECIFICALLY.
9 – You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt. WE WERE NOT CREATED "FROM DIRT", GOD CREATED US, PERIOD. I ALSO BELIEVE GOD CREATED US THROUGH EVOLUTION AND SO DO MANY. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE BIBLE THAT SAYS HOW LONG IT ACTUALLY TOOK TO CREATE US. EVOLUTION DOES NOT CANCEL OUT GOD. IN FACT IT MAKES HIM AN AMAZING DESIGNER OF LIFE. 😀
8 – You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God. IT IS NOT A TRIBUNE GOD, BUT ONE GOD. JUST BECAUSE YOUR HUMAN BRAIN CAN'T COMPREHEND A BEING THAT IS THREE IN ONE, DOESN'T MEAN IT CAN'T EXIST. AGAIN I DO NOT LAUGH AT ANYONE ELSE'S FAITH, I JUST CHOOSE MINE. LIBERALS WHO BELIEVE IN NOTHING ARE THE ONES WHO LAUGH.
EVERY SINGLE TIME IT WAS IN ORDER TO PROTECT GOD'S PEOPLE FROM THOSE WHO WOULD SLAUGHTER THEM FIRST. IN ADDITION, THE OLD TESTAMENT IS NOT CHRISTIANITY, THE NEW TESTAMENT IS. SO WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO CHERRY PICK ITEMS TO SHOW HOW BAD CHRISTIANS ARE, TRY LOOKING IN THE BOOK WE BELIEVE IN.
6 – You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky. SO? WHY IS MY BELIEF ANY BETTER OR WORSE THAN THEIRS? WHY DO YOU HAVE SUCH A PROBLEM WITH IT? BY THE WAY, GENESIS TALKS ABOUT ANGELS COMING DOWN AND MATING WITH HUMANS TO CREATE GIANTS. SO WE HAVE OUR "GODS SLEEPING WITH WOMEN TOO". 😀
5 – You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old. I DO NOT SPEND MY LIFE DOING THIS AT ALL. I DO NOT NEED PROOF. BUT THEN SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T UNDERSTAND FAITH AT ALL WOULD THINK THAT, WOULDN'T THEY? AS I'VE SAID ABOVE, PROVING HOW OLD THE EARTH IS DOES NOT PROVE THERE IS NO GOD. I BELIEVE GOD CREATED SCIENCE AND SO DO MANY CHRISTIANS.
4 – You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs – though excluding those in all rival sects – will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving." IT IS NOT MY RELIGION WHO WILL DETERMINE WHO GOES TO HELL AND WHO DOESN'T, IT IS GOD. YOU CAN BE UNHAPPY ABOUT THAT ALL YOU LIKE, BUT IT IS NOT OUR PLACE TO JUDGE, IT WILL BE GOD'S, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT OR BELIEVE HIS JUDGEMENT TO BE FAIR OR NOT. HE MADE THE WORLD, HE MAKES THE RULES. IN FACT THE MORE "TOLERANT AND LOVING" WE ARE TO OUR FELLOW HUMAN BEING, THE BETTER CHANCE WE HAVE OF NOT BURNING IN HELL. SO I WOULD SAY, YEP, WE ARE THE RELIGION OF LOVE AND TOLLERANCE.
3 – While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity. I DON'T NEED TO PROVE CHRISTIANITY, YOU DO. OR ACTUALLY YOU NEED TO PROVE THERE IS NO GOD TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER. I HAVE NO NEED OF THAT, I KNOW WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THERE GOD EXISTS.
2 – You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God. I DON'T ASK GOD FOR ANYTHING. THE BIBLE SAYS GOD KNOWS WHAT YOU NEED BETTER THAN YOU DO. PEOPLE WHO ASK GOD FOR SPECIFIC THINGS WILL BE DISAPPOINTED. HE DOESNT' WORK THAT WAY. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "SUCCESS RATE" FOR PRAYER. IT IS PURELY CONVERSATION WITH GOD. THERE IS NO SUCCESS OR FAILURE.
1 – You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history – but still call yourself a Christian. YOU THINK YOU KNOW MORE, BUT YOU DON'T. ATHIESTS HAVE SPENT DECADES UPON DECADES STUDYING, BUT NOT UNDERSTANDING. YOU REALLY KNOW VERY LITTLE, BECAUSE IT ISN'T ALL IN A LITTLE BOOK. IT'S IN OUR HEARTS. THAT PART YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND.

Well written. And then there are all those nice folks who sit in church every Sunday, and then screw everybody over during the week. What hypocrites!

Where's all the Christian outrage at this comment? Shouldn't there be a few dozen of you coming to your faiths defense? Oh, right, you can't because every word of it is true. I guess you'll just have to resort to poorly spelled name calling and playing the victim "Shut up you stoopid morans!! You don't know anyting, why do you all pick on us so much, were just luvng Christans..."

"THE OLD TESTAMENT IS NOT CHRISTIANITY, THE NEW TESTAMENT IS. SO WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO CHERRY PICK ITEMS TO SHOW HOW BAD CHRISTIANS ARE, TRY LOOKING IN THE BOOK WE BELIEVE IN."

"BY THE WAY, GENESIS TALKS ABOUT ANGELS COMING DOWN AND MATING WITH HUMANS TO CREATE GIANTS. SO WE HAVE OUR "GODS SLEEPING WITH WOMEN TOO"

So which is it? Do you believe in the OT that contains Genesis or don't you?

      May 1, 2012 at 1:07 pm |
    • GodPot

"ATHIESTS HAVE SPENT DECADES UPON DECADES STUDYING, BUT NOT UNDERSTANDING."

Right, and all the Christians do decades of understanding without studying I guess... I think you hit the nail on the head with this one, which directly ties in to the other article about analytical thinking promotes atheism, whereas not thinking, just accepting, promotes Christianity.

      May 1, 2012 at 1:12 pm |
    • Deb G.

@ Godpot – I guess you did. I sure would like to know what in my answer was name calling or outrage. I merely showed in each instance how much the poster doesn't know about Christians. He has his stereotypes he believes he can label ALL Christians with, but he's wrong.
@ Jon – you're absolutely right. There are a lot of hypocrits in church. In all faiths, not just mine. Going to church doesn't make you a Chrisitan any more than standing in your garage makes you a car. Being a Christian is in your character, how you treat others. Many say they are Christians, but their actions don't say it. It is not my place to judge who is and who isn't a "real" Christian, that will be up to God. I can only answer for myself when all is said and done. I do not attend church for the very reason that there are too many judgemental hypocrits there. That by no means, diminishes my faith in God. They are only human and subject to human failings. No human is perfect, even Christians. And anything run by humans will have flaws, even church.

      May 1, 2012 at 1:15 pm |
    • *facepalm*

-Same criticism applies to all faiths. Atheist just say 'I don't know' and look to actual available evidence

-So which parts of the bible are literal and which are not? How do you know? And I'm not sure how god can 'design' life if you think evolution is valid. Evolution requires random changes – no one can be at the helm. Where do you see your god's part in all this?

IT IS NOT A TRIBUNE GOD, BUT ONE GOD. JUST BECAUSE YOUR HUMAN BRAIN CAN'T COMPREHEND A BEING THAT IS THREE IN ONE, DOESN'T MEAN IT CAN'T EXIST. AGAIN I DO NOT LAUGH AT ANYONE ELSE'S FAITH, I JUST CHOOSE MINE. LIBERALS WHO BELIEVE IN NOTHING ARE THE ONES WHO LAUGH.
-Then why does your god keep secrets from himself? Jesus clearly stated that the father knew things that he did not. How is that possible with a single god?

-It's the same god – OT and NT. The NT requires it. And when god slaughtered infants in Egypt, he was doing that as a coersion tactic, not to save other's lives. Nice try. Fail.

-So you don't find hindu beliefs to be the stuff of fairy tales? That angels mating with giants makes sense to you? I ... just ... wow

-Science is simply a process. How in the world did god "create" science. That doesn't even make sense.

IT IS NOT MY RELIGION WHO WILL DETERMINE WHO GOES TO HELL AND WHO DOESN'T, IT IS GOD.
-The original never comments said the religion determines who goes to heaven and who gets tortured for eternity. But you do worship a god who tortures people for an infinite amount of time for a finite amount of mistakes. How you could possibly see that as loving is WAY beyond me.

I DON'T NEED TO PROVE CHRISTIANITY, YOU DO. OR ACTUALLY YOU NEED TO PROVE THERE IS NO GOD TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER. I HAVE NO NEED OF THAT, I KNOW WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THERE GOD EXISTS.
You don't "know" it. You believe it. And one cannot prove that there is no god.

Would you like a few dozen quotes for your bible where it states that god most definitely does work that way? Why do you ignore those parts?

YOU THINK YOU KNOW MORE, BUT YOU DON'T. ATHIESTS HAVE SPENT DECADES UPON DECADES STUDYING, BUT NOT UNDERSTANDING. YOU REALLY KNOW VERY LITTLE, BECAUSE IT ISN'T ALL IN A LITTLE BOOK. IT'S IN OUR HEARTS. THAT PART YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND.
-Studies have shown that, on average, atheists understand christian theology better than christians. Sorry that you find this fact inconvenient.

The problem with revealed religions is that no one is ever on the same page. Everyone uses the bible and claims it is the actual or inspired word of god, yet everyone reads something different into it. I would think that if a supreme diety actually wanted to reveal themself, they would probably do it in a more clear, conside, and convincing fashion.

The man's a pig! Hopefully groups will now see him as a "public address piriah" and refrain from booking him especially for young people's events! He's supposedly a champion against bullying yet he bullies people of a different religious persuasion than him. Yeah. Right.

    • Primewonk

Barry – he didn't bully anyone. He told the students that parts of the bible were bullshît. The fundiots insist that they be allowed to bully, bash, and beat gay folks, because it is in the bible, yet they refuse to kill gay folks, which is in the bible. They refuse to dàmn to hell those who dine at Red Lobster. They refuse to show up at all weddings and check the bride for an intact hymen, even though their bible demands that women who are not virgins on their wedding day be stoned.

Sorry Barry, but you fundiots don't have a leg to stand on.

Religious faith can give people a sort of hyperbolic confidence, an utter unconcern about whether they might be making a mistake, that enables acts of inhumanity that would otherwise be unthinkable.

jimtanker, give the Book, chapter and verse in the New Testament where Christians are taught to kiII gay people."

      @Nick,

Did you miss the part where Jesus said they still applied. Didn't realize that Paul > Jesus...

      May 1, 2012 at 12:15 pm |
    • Jcan30

He is not saying that Paul is greater than Jesus. He is simply pointing out the inconsistencies in the writings of the disciples. Matthew gives a more strict interpretation and explains that Jesus is reinforcing the laws of Judaism, while other disciples like Paul explain that he is casting aside the old laws. If Matthew's interpretation is correct then any of us who have ate pork at some point have violated the old law. Matthew's views are largely reflective of his strong Jewish faith and his belief that Jesus was an extension of Jewish faith. Paul and other disciples viewed Jesus as a more transformative figure, something separate from Judaism. As with most things of the Bible it depends on the interpretation you choose. Before anyone criticizes me, I am a Christian, but I take a realistic approach to the influence of man on the writings.

Let's think about what Sa.v.age actually said:

      1. Christians don't follow the bible verses that promote sla.very or k.i.lling your children if they disobey etc
      2. Because christians don't follow the bible on those verses, perhaps they should not follow the g.a.y bashing ones a few lines down.

Religion is a plague upon mankind....a mental illness. It can be all to easily spread by one infected person, is very difficult to treat, and some will go to their deathbed denying they are even sick. Deseases and mental illnesses, like religion, can have a quick onset, no outward physical symptoms, and can result in unpredictable and often violent behavior. Often, infected people try to purposely infect others.

    May 1, 2012 at 12:02 pm |
    • Argonaut

Early detection and education in science is the best medicine to treat relgion. Though the most infected are generally beyond help.

      May 1, 2012 at 12:05 pm |
    • C. Smith

Be careful defining something like religion as a 'mental illness'. Mental normality is defined by consensus, meaning the average person is defined as 'normal', while people markedly different from that are defined as 'abnormal'. The vast majority of people in the world today are religious in one manner or another. Therefore, if anyone's crazy, it's the atheists.

      @C.Smith

Actually, religious people are delusional meaning they have a mental disorder. Look up the definition for delusion, it says it all brother.

      May 1, 2012 at 12:09 pm |
    • Athe Eist

Yes.....religion is an illness. People who are ill have a propensity to kneel, see things, have paranoid delusions that some demon is out to get them, feel obcessed to confess to things in dark closets, and lack the abilit to think rationally. The most infected also have a tendancy to believe they aren't sick, or simply go around trying to infect everybody on purpose. They may see their symptoms as normal, but those with similar afflictions (other religions) with similar symptoms, they will see them as sick and in need of treatment.

      May 1, 2012 at 12:10 pm |
    • Frumpster

And atheism is NOT a plague on mankind? Did you miss the 20th century, and the 100 million+ murdered by atheistic regimes?

      May 1, 2012 at 12:10 pm |
    • jimtanker

Believing in things for which there is no evidence is delusional behaviour and is therefore abnormal. All theists are insane.

      May 1, 2012 at 12:11 pm |
    • Argonaut

ciroc2323 – lunacy is seeing things that aren't there, hearing things that aren't there, having compulsive-obsessive behaviors, chanting, having imaginary friends, and having irrational thoughts like feeding a whole crowd with a fish or turning water into wine.

      May 1, 2012 at 12:13 pm |
    • Grumpster

Actually, most Christians are atheists. Just as you easily dismiss other religions as invalid, that makes you an atheist....except you make a simple exception for your own religion...seems to me that's quite irrational. More wars are undertaken in the name of religion than not. I don't need a magic friend to tell me to be nice to others.

Frumpster, and what "atheistic" regemes are you talking about?

      May 1, 2012 at 12:20 pm |
    • ciroc2323

You look at some very basic "evolutionary" occurrences where creatures may or may not have adapted to their environment, and look at how certain characteristics may have been culled out while others may have been encouraged - and from there you extrapolate single-celled organisms "evolving" into man, and you fail to see the miracle of balance required just to sustain life on the planet, and you pass off the miraculous complexity of proteins and DNA. The leaps of logic from those secular soft-science adherents who think they're "the logical ones" is almost obscene in the level of absurdity.

      May 1, 2012 at 12:23 pm |
    • Agent_Smith

There is absolutely no evidence for anything greater than intra-genus evolution. I bet you still believe it. Recycling doesn't do anything to help the planet. I bet you still do it. There is no evidence that second hand smoke harms and no evidence that it does not harm. We still make laws about it. Man-made global warming has sever faults as proven by scientists around the world including the CERN. There is absolutely no knowledge of what existed before the big bang, and yet so many feel that God could never exist in reality. The MOST oppressive regimes that have caused the most bloodshed were atheist. Believe what you want, in the end its the faith YOU have in your arguments. In the end you're the same as those you rant against.

Ciroc you have extremely stupid ideas about evolution.. You should try looking at the actual theory to see where your reasoning is so fvcked up about it.

Also, I think if 95% of the population believed in unicorns, you'd be "berating" the idea that unicorns exist..

Your posts make you sound extremely dumb.

Since there is absolutely no knowledge of "before the big bang" why would you only a.ssume one possibility (god)?. In the absence of evidence you say, "I don't know," not "It must have been a big magic dude who used spells.". That's fvcking stupid..

You do realize that time, as we know it, was CREATED by the process of the big bang?? It seems like you don't have a very good undestanding of science or how it works.. Perhaps take some classes??

“Christians don't follow the bible verses that promote sla.very or k.i.lling your children”
=>Typical negative attack by atheists that twist the truth of the God to serve their purpose. The shame of it momoya is you do it all the time and do not even realize you are part of the destruction of foundation of freedom. Interesting you are like the apostle Paul except he went from killing innocent believers to saving them while you have gone from claiming to be a minister to becoming sinister and one of the chief spreaders of falsehood.
Just in case you have bought into you own lies Christians are told to love their enemy and even thinking hurtful thoughts towards another is the same as murder in the eyes of God. It was God that expressed laws on treating slaves properly. It was the God of Exodus that set the captives free.

“christians don't follow the bible on those verses… should not follow the g.a.y bashing ones a few lines down.”
Christians do follow Christ if they are indeed Christians. There is no gay bashing in the Bible. In case you have not noticed the Bible is not politically correct whitewashed mass media garbage as it is the truth of God. The truth of God is that sin separates you from God and it does not matter what the sin is. If you do not believe it you will note that those who sin without guilt or repentance also are predominantly godless.

“He described their BEHAVIOR and later apologized for that remark. “
-=>In case you did not read the article Sav-age called Christians “Pansyass bullies”. That gives a clear picture of Sav-age and his heart att-itude towards Christ. I do not want his apology it is who he is because of what he has chosen to put in his mind. You also have filled your mind with all sorts of godless books, movies, friends and activities. I hope this is the life you wanted for yourself where your godless thoughts drive you to using fowl language, name calling targeting those who are soft and loving as Christ was. You are the bully just as Dan Sav-age is the bully.

“What was so wrong with those three things?”
=>I hope you can figure that out.

      1. It's not a negative attack to describe the actions christians take now, dumbazz.. Christians don't follow parts of their bible.. It's not a secret, and it's not hurtful.. Don't be ridiculous.
      2. "Following christ" isnt' the issue.. Don't red herring on me, dipsh!t.. Following PARTS of the bible is the issue.. If you're not following the sl.a.very and ki.lling your kids part, then why not not follow the g.a.y bashing part?
      3. Yeah, I hope you can figure out that your reasoning was absolutely retarded..

@ C. Smith – Until 1997 more than 50% of the public said that interracial marriage was wrong. I guess according to your line of thought, being a bigotted racist was normal. Hell, in a recent poll half of all republicans in Mississippi still said that interracial marriage should be illegal, so I guess if you are a southern conservative it's normal to be a racist bigot.

Conversely, 53% of the public, nation wide, say that gays should have the same right to marry as us straights, so I guess, being gay is now normal.

=>then stop spreading lies out of the Dawkins bible for dummies and speak the truth. The Bible does not advocate killing children, slavery or gay bashing. All Hebrew law from the beginning of time does not necessarily apply to all people of all future generations any more than the edicts of the Pope or the Ayatollah apply indiscriminately.

Jesus said the road is narrow that leads to the kingdom and few find it. Jesus also said man loves the way of this world more than God. In case you have not noticed it is not about gay marriage as the root is to topple the rule of God. We know that this world will not end until the spirit of the anti-Christ has the remaining few Christians huddled in their closets. I applaud the work of the atheists and the gay community as they demonstrate before all mankind the end result of godlessness. It is sin which separates man from God not orientation. We have all been warned and 6 billion copies of the warning have been published yet the atheists continue in lock step with the gay community to take down what Stalin, Mao, Poll Pot could not.
Judas did it for money and the gay community is being played like a fiddle by declared atheist George Soros.

You morons…. you christard.. Damn you guys are fvcking stupid.

As to the Bible it must be taken as whole just as your dear theory of evolution falls apart if you take pieces then attempt to apply those pieces in some unrelated area. Christians that actually follow Christianity as written do not have any fundamental differences as to the nature of God. You again attempt to spread the lies of the Dawkins bible as a true follower of atheism. The fundamentals of atheists under Dawkins are the same and you have simply chosen to be a minister of darkness.

Rather than inculcating our children with the primary-color simple Sunday school legends and myths most people do, might I suggest the following ten comandments to enable them to think for themselves.
    1. DO NOT automatically believe something just because a parent, priest, rabbi or minister tells you that you must.
    2. DO NOT think that claims about magic and the supernatural are more likely true because they are written in old books. That makes them less likely true.
    3. DO analyze claims about religion with the same critical eye that you would claims about money, political positions or social issues.
    4. DO NOT accept it when religious leaders tell you it is wrong to question, doubt or think for yourself. It never is. Only those selling junk cars get frightened when you want to "look under the hood".
    5. DO decouple morality from a belief in the supernatural, in any of its formulations (Christianity, Judaism, Islam etc.). One can be moral without believing in gods, ghosts and goblins and believing in any of them does not make one moral.
    6. DO a bit of independent research into whatever book you were brought up to believe in. Who are its authors and why should I believe them in what they say? How many translations has it gone through? Do we have originals, or only edited copies of copies of copies– the latter is certainly true for every single book in the Bible.
    7. DO realize that you are only a Christian (or Hindu or Jew) because of where you were born. Were you lucky enough to be born in the one part of the World that “got it right”?
    8. DO NOT be an apologist or accept the explanation “your mind is too small to understand the greatness of god” or “god moves in mysterious ways” when you come upon logical inconsistencies in your belief. A retreat to mysticism is the first refuge of the cornered wrong.
    9. DO understand where your religion came from and how it evolved from earlier beliefs to the point you were taught it. Are you lucky enough to be living at that one point in history where we “got it right”?
    10. DO educate yourself on the natural Universe, human history and the history of life on Earth, so as to be able to properly evaluate claims that a benevolent, mind-reading god is behind the whole thing.
I sometimes think that, if we first taught our children these simple guidelines, any religion or other supernatural belief would be quickly dismissed by them as quaint nostalgia from a bygone era. I hope we get there as a species.

I really don't understand why atheists spend so much time trying to debunk religion. I know many atheists, but it seems like they have no respect for religion. I respect someone who chooses to be atheist, but to treat it as threshold test for intelligence is ridiculous. One needs only to look at the French Revolution to understand just how bad society can go when they choose to worship the god of reason as opposed the God of the Bible, Koran, etc. If you had a bad experience with religion growing up you have a right not to participate and not to believe in God, but why apply so much energy to take faith and hope away from people who do.

He left a book for us to know the rules, and it has been talked about for years and years. Its real simple.

      May 1, 2012 at 12:06 pm |
    • Bob

Fried, yeah, god doesn't ask that much of us. Beyond the daily animal sacrifice and other torture and murder that he demands, that is. Stuff like this

      Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes your sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations, and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

Ask the questions. Break the chains. Join the movement. Be free of Christianity and other superstitions.

    ONLY FOR THE NEWCOMERS–

    One more time: The Facts–

"Abrahamics" believe that their god created all of us and of course that includes the g-ay members of the human race. Also, those who have studied ho-mo-se-xuality have determined that there is no choice involved therefore ga-ys are ga-y because god made them that way.

    To wit:

o The Royal College of Psy-chiatrists stated in 2007:

“ Despite almost a century of psy-choanalytic and psy-chological speculation, there is no substantive evidence to support the suggestion that the nature of parenting or early childhood experiences play any role in the formation of a person’s fundamental heteros-exual or hom-ose-xual orientation. It would appear that s-exual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of ge-netic factors and the early ut-erine environment. Se-xual orientation is therefore not a choice.[60] "

"Garcia-Falgueras and Swaab state in the abstract of their 2010 study, "The fe-tal brain develops during the intraut-erine period in the male direction through a direct action of tes-tosterone on the developing nerve cells, or in the female direction through the absence of this hor-mone surge. In this way, our gender identi-ty (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender) and s-exual orientation are programmed or organized into our brain structures when we are still in the womb. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender ident–ity or s-exual orientation."[8

See also the Philadelphia Inquirer review “Gay Gene, Deconstructed”, 12/12/2011. Said review addresses the following “How do genes associated with ho-mose-xuality avoid being weeded out by Darwinian evolution?”

Of course, those gays who belong to Abrahamic religions are supposed to obey the rules of no adu-ltery or for-nication allowed.

And because of basic biology differences said monogamous ventures should always be called same-s-ex unions not same-s-ex marriages.

From below, on top, backwards, forwards, from this side of the Moon and from the other side too, gay se-xual activity is still mutual masturbation caused by one or more complex se-xual differences. Some differences are visually obvious in for example the complex maleness of DeGeneres, Billy Jean King and Rosie O'Donnell.

Yes, heteros-exuals practice many of the same "moves" but there is never a doubt who is the female and who is the male.

      KMAD

Sav.age was describing the way christians already treat some parts of their bible: Sla.ughtering one's children when they disobey, owning sl.a.ves, nailing somebody's ear to your doorpost, etc.. He was merely asking that they do the same with the g.a.y bashing verses that are a few verses down the page..

Also, he didn't call names, he described behavior.. Don't lie.

He apologized for the term pansy-ass, but for good reason he did not apologize for calling them out. Dan was quoting parts of the Bible these so-called Christians didn't want to hear about–namely the Bible's endorsement of slavery. These blubbering fools could dish out Biblical abuse to gays but they can't stand the heat when the tables are turned on them.

For those who don't believe and mock..I will say this..for those who believe..no explanation is necessary..for those who don't believe ..no explanation is possible.Only God can convert you..no man.You mock the bible..but have you read it?Do you understand it?It's obvious you have no clue..but I will say this..when your time here on earth is up you will stand before the God you don't beoieve in and you will be judged nonetheless and you will have no excuse and you will be condemned because His works and His power is everywhere to be seen and you chose to ignore or not believe.God does not condemn anyone to Hell..you will condemn yourself.Ihope that rather than go through life ignorant and blind to creation of what is visible and invisible..that you may on your own..do some investigating at the least. As St.Pio said of atheists.."they'll believe in hell when they get there".Seriously..to think everything happened by acciedent and that this same accident continues each and everyday exactly the same ..whose being ignorant?

So it's god's fault, then.. You just said that only God could convert me, so if he doesn't, it's his fault.. thanks.

So... why did you post this again?

John, the majority of atheists are former theists. Many of us were funamentalists. Many of us read and studied the bible religiously. We could quote and spin the bible with the best of them. But we came to understand that the whole thing was a house of cards. A house that could't support itself, and when you took out a single card, the whole house collapsed.

You wrote, " God does not condemn anyone to Hell..you will condemn yourself."

Is your god omnipotent and omniscient? If not, then why worship him. If yes, then you do not have freewill. Your god knows if you are slated for heaven, or if your ticket is punched for hell. And he knew this not only before you were born, but before he created the universe. He can't not know. So John, how can you end up where god knows you can't? If god knows you are going to hell, how can you surprize him? You can't. So in essence, god has condemned you to hell. Your god purposefully created billions and billions of people with the sole purpose of torturing you for all eternity.

Actually, not a one of you was ever Christian. If you love God, it never ends, no matter what you THINK. So no.. you were not theists.. you were always too self centered and self worshipping.

    @Doug

Per your comment down below about the bible only containing perfection:

Why did god create a perfect place that was able to be corrupted–much less by man's sin?
