Columnist Dan Savage stands by comments on 'bulls**t in the Bible'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Columnist and gay-rights advocate Dan Savage is standing by his comment that “we can learn to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about gay people” at a recent conference for high school students, a line that prompted some to walk out and spurred intense online debate.

In a blog post on Sunday, Savage wrote that his remark at a conference for the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association was "being spun as an attack on Christianity. Which is bullshhh… which is untrue.”

“I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised," Savage wrote. "I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against — and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying 'motivated by faith') — because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong.”

Some Christian students walked out of the Seattle speech, prompting another controversial line from Savage: “It’s funny to someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansya**ed people react when you push back.”

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Savage apologized for that specific remark in Sunday’s blog post, writing that his word choice “was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong.”

One of the teachers attending the speech with his students told CNN’s Carol Costello on Monday that he was taken aback by the speech and that he supported the decision of some of his students to walk out of it.

“It took a real dark, hostile turn, certainly, as I saw it,” said Rick Tuttle, a teacher at Sutter Union High School in Southern California. “It became very hostile toward Christianity, to the point that many students did walk out, including some of my students.”

“They felt that they were attacked … a very pointed, direct attack on one particular group of students. It’s amazing that we go to an anti-bullying speech and one group of students is picked on in particular, with harsh, profane language.”

He should have gone further. Most of the bible fits his description. It's mostly all junk and not even internally consistent, for example re a lot of points of biology and geology. Many sections contradict each other. Christian doctrine doesn't hold up under honest, reasoned examination. Sad that we still have people who cling to it, but the doctrine will go the way of the dinosaurs that they can't explain.

Based on your comments, you must have scoured the Bible and researched it for yourself to come up with all that conjecture.

      @speed

I don't knw about fred, but I spent almost 50 years studying the bible the best I was able until I became an atheist.. I'm still studying the bible, it just makes a lot more sense as what it is–a book of ancient, recycled myths.

Sounds like you're still searching then! Good Luck!

@Speed: Studies suggest that less than 10% of professed Christians have read the Bible, yet they claim undying faith in the material it contains. You should issue your criticism equally on them.

I'm cetainly not searching for the god of the bible; that is one fvcked up dude!!! But seriously, no, the "god" of the bible is too fragmentary and contradictory to even consider "believing in.". Basically, it'd be like someone wanting you to believe in an Easter Bunny that can never be seen face to face except when it can be seen face to face, or a Leprechaun who came up with the biggest plan imaginable that was perfect and then had to start over again a few times and work with loopholes he made to make his plan work because it really doesn't.. You just can't take a being like that seriously even if you do want to believe it exists,

Amazing you sound like the fred I was before Jesus came into my life. Now, born again I can testify as a personal witness that the Bible is the Word of God. I can testify that we serve a Living God and God is with us through the indewelling of the Holy Spirit. You could not have found any problems related to biology, geology as we know it today because the Bible is not a science book. The extensive list of biology, geology and consistency issues presented by the Dawkins bible for atheists have been debunked.
Fred, what you have proven for all to see is that the Bible is true in every aspect. Seek and you shall find – you have found exactly what you were looking for in the Bible, momoya has found exactly what she was seeking. Your true hearts desire was revealed in your post and it is dark and negative as are most posts that attack God.

Thank you Dan Savage for telling the truth. There is much bullshit in the Bible.

Ignore the hateful Christians. They will probably never understand. What matters is to get through to rational thinking people.

What other group(s) do you oppose because of their differing views/opinions on life?

      May 2, 2012 at 10:38 am |
    • Primewonk

@Speedracer – not all opinions merit equal weight. If someone holds an opinion that is invalidated by actual facts and evidence, that opinion is not only wrong, it is worthless.

      May 2, 2012 at 10:46 am |
    • SpeedRacer

@Primewonk:.....again, your opinion, my question stands. The Bible validates the Christian opinion/faith/belief. I am not arguing who's right or wrong, but rather, to leave all to their own desires and to not spew false comments like: "Christians are hateful....do not understand....". Bigotry works both ways.

      May 2, 2012 at 10:59 am |
    • n8263

You should notice that I wrote "ignore the hateful Christians," not to ignore ALL Christians. I believe Christians like Keith that are so hateful to describe Savage as wicked and vile are so far gone they will never see religion objectively.

      Sorry Speed, not my opinion.

If one of these christian skinheads comes on here and posts that the holocaust never happened – is that a valid opinion?

If one of these christian skinheads comes on here and posts that black folks are subhuman – is that a valid opinion?

It's the same with ignorant fundiots who claim gay folks are evil.

    • GodPot

"If someone holds an opinion that is invalidated by actual facts and evidence, that opinion is not only wrong, it is worthless."

I believe it is worse than worthless since it can damage other minds that are less able to see through to the facts and evidence as they allow the smokescreen of "faith" blind them. Talk about the blind leading the blind.

This shows how much our sinful nation is in decline. Remove the Bibles and prayer from schools and replace them with this wicked vile man's hard speeches.
Hbr 10:26 ¶ For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Hbr 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
This nation is in deep, deep trouble. You had better make your peace with God, repent, and start seeking God's holiness because He will not tolerate this rebellion much longer. If He delays, it's because He is merciful. But if He doesn't judge this nation, then He owes Sodom and Ghom-orrha an apology.

bible and prayer belong at home and in church, keith, not in public schools.

@ sam stone, that maybe but this shouldn't have been alowed there either.

      May 2, 2012 at 8:34 am |
    • Primewonk

Point 1 – Why should your bible be used in public school? It isn't math – pi is not 3.0. It isn't science – your god starts getting things wrong in the very first verse. It isn't history – there was no literal Adam and Eve. There was no global flood, there was no mass exodus from Egypt. It isn't logic – Judas did not kill himself 2 different ways.

Point 2 – Kids can pray to themselves all they want in school. You can't have force3d prayer – lead by teachers or authority figures. Oft times we see fundiots whine about the court cases taking out forced prayer. Yet, they fail to understand that it was religious groups who brought these suits. Catholics didn't want their kids having to say Methodist prayers, Lutherans not wanting their kids to say Catholic prayers, etc.

Point 3 – You seem to think we are a theocracy, or should be. We aren't. And if you fundiots try to make us one, be ready for a bloodbath.

@sam ok there we go. Then someone else sould be able to express there opion in schools as well but if someone was talking about the bible in the school instead of someone bashing it the uproar would be greater. Don't you think? We have seen it happen in schools all over the country.

      May 2, 2012 at 11:17 am |
    • momoya

It depends on the school/county/other factors.. In some schools the entire staff is Christian as are most of the students.. They talk about the bible and god all the time (teachers and students) as only makes sense.. Other schools have less christian influence and so it might go either way..

I am very encouraged by the low-interest in this story overall.. A decade ago this story would have dominated the news networks but today it's not that big of a deal.. That's a very positive outcome!!

"The bible and prayer has been taken out of the public school system. Replaced with bullying, guns, disrespect, iphones and anything that goes...where have you been? Are you kidding yourself, come on?"

Taking that stuff out of schools is first off wrong...the authority figures within the public school system simply are now allowed to refer to the buybull or use prayer. It does not mean that the kids are not free to pray on their own and it does not mean that they can not discuss their book on their own time (ie; breaks from class). Preventing the buybull from being used as an actual learning tool is a good thing. Taking this garbage out of the curriculum is not what caused all the bad things to happen, bad parenting and in some cases peer pressure is what caused those things to happen.

How many kids have you put through the public school system Jen? Kids are bullied every day for their disbelief by kids that are believers.

      May 2, 2012 at 3:20 pm |
    • a person of the Name

@truth that depends on where you grew up because I seen it the other way around.

      May 2, 2012 at 4:07 pm |
    • TruthPrevails :-)

@a person of the Name: Okay, I can only speak for the way it has worked here in Canada and our public schools only prevent the use of prayer by authority figures and the teaching of the bible. The kids are free to discuss and free to pray if they wish. The high school system here (not sure about all provinces but in some) offers a Comparative Religions course as an elective course and it literally focuses on every possible belief/disbelief system.

If the church had had the balls 20 years ago to stand up to this nonsense, we wouldn't have to deal with the Dan Sava.ges of today-but hold on-it's going to get much much worse.

TP, you said: sending the info off to some old friends in charge of dismantling sites like his.:
Don't forget to have your 'old friends' break his kneecaps or shoot him in the back of the head and kick him in a shallow grave...
I find it telling that you admit to having 'old friends' who are actually in charge of repressing freedom of speech. Yeah, like I said before, keep your messed up Canadian laws and goofy communist ideas in Canada. I had no idea how intolerant communism real was.

Isa 66:23 And it shall come to pass, [that] from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

Isa 66:24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

Sorry, prayer is just wishful thinking. Pray in one hand, **** in the other, see which fills up faster.

    • Jesus

-Prayer doesn’t not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

    ONLY FOR THE NEWCOMERS–

    One more time: The Facts–

"Abrahamics" believe that their god created all of us and of course that includes the g-ay members of the human race. Also, those who have studied ho-mo-se-xuality have determined that there is no choice involved therefore ga-ys are ga-y because god made them that way.

    To wit:

o The Royal College of Psy-chiatrists stated in 2007:

“ Despite almost a century of psy-choanalytic and psy-chological speculation, there is no substantive evidence to support the suggestion that the nature of parenting or early childhood experiences play any role in the formation of a person’s fundamental heteros-exual or hom-ose-xual orientation. It would appear that s-exual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of ge-netic factors and the early ut-erine environment. Se-xual orientation is therefore not a choice.[60] "

"Garcia-Falgueras and Swaab state in the abstract of their 2010 study, "The fe-tal brain develops during the intraut-erine period in the male direction through a direct action of tes-tosterone on the developing nerve cells, or in the female direction through the absence of this hor-mone surge. In this way, our gender identi-ty (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender) and s-exual orientation are programmed or organized into our brain structures when we are still in the womb. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender ident–ity or s-exual orientation."[8

See also the Philadelphia Inquirer review “Gay Gene, Deconstructed”, 12/12/2011. Said review addresses the following “How do genes associated with ho-mose-xuality avoid being weeded out by Darwinian evolution?”

Of course, those gays who belong to Abrahamic religions are supposed to obey the rules of no adu-ltery or for-nication allowed.

And because of basic biology differences said monogamous ventures should always be called same-s-ex unions not same-s-ex marriages.

From below, on top, backwards, forwards, from this side of the Moon and from the other side too, gay se-xual activity is still mutual masturbation caused by one or more complex se-xual differences. Some differences are visually obvious in for example the complex maleness of DeGeneres, Billy Jean King and Rosie O'Donnell.

Yes, heteros-exuals practice many of the same "moves" but there is never a doubt who is the female and who is the male.

The students who walked out should have their Bible thrown back in their face by being stoned. If people were held accountable to the rules in Bible then they would quickly give it up.

So how come Christians pick and choose which laws from the OT to follow? There is nothing in the NT about abortion but they are against it because the Bible says its wrong. It's only in the OT.

Mark, his speech was not a tirade and he did not apologize for it, and he should not. He stated that people should not use bullshit in the Bible to justify bullying.

    He is right.

He makes a good point and he's right to point out the apparent hypocrisy. However, I don't know that I would have sat through his anti- Christian rant either. Especially when he apparently knows very little about what he's criticizing.

    • Mike Blackadder

Okay, on second thought I probably would have sat through his rant because I like to argue.

He suggests certain things are ignored in the bible. The truth is that the study of biblical text is anything but new, and the words and stories that are written need to be considered in context. This nuance is not equivalent to the suggestion that we all ignore certain things.

      May 2, 2012 at 11:49 am |

momoya, thanks for the tips concerning the filters. I can think of a few things that I wrote which would have been a problem. Unfortunately, have to go back to work now. Thanks again.

    • Mark from Middle River

      >>>”Mark, his speech was not a tirade and he did not apologize for it,”

      From the article:

“It’s funny to someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansya**ed people react when you push back.”Sav'age apologized for that specific remark in Sunday’s blog post, writing that his word choice “was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong.”

So, actually...he did apologize for calling those students who walked out “pansies”.

So, why should the students apologize for walking out of a situation where a adult was bullying children?

      May 2, 2012 at 12:08 pm |
    • momoya

      Hi Mark

How's it feel for me to smash every single 'argument' you try to make on theses blogs?!? LOLOLOLOL!!!

You are trying to weasel out of your stupid comment like you always do; you never look before you leap, so you're always leaping into briar patches.. Then I or someone else comes along and shows you how you're stuck in a briar patch and you keep saying that you aren't and you keep refusing the help that's graciously offered to you as you keep getting more and more stuck on the thorns you keep wriggling deeper into.. Denial is the only "tactic" you're good at because you have to do it in every argument.. That's why it feels so natural and why you slip into it each time: Habit.. You know I'm right and you know that you were stupid in not looking up an inch and a half to see that I was not involved in the "discussion" as TR claimed I was.. I just exposed you as a complete idiot, so now you're doing the only thing you know how to do.

Think about how it always goes, here, for you Mark and consider changing yourself for the better.

      May 2, 2012 at 12:31 pm |
    • momoya

      Mark,

I've already dealt with that particular crap because you keep bringing it up: I'll try one more time, but I sure hope you don't get it even now because I prefer you just as stupid in the future as you've been so far here.

He apologized for the remark and I agree with his a.ssessment: however, the meanings of words don't change just because someone apologizes for something.. He was describing behavior NOT calling them a "name.". Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the parts of speech and how they function in the English language.. You're misrepresenting when you say "children" because you keep wanting to conflate this issue with child abuse–and that's so fvcking stupid I'm surprised that even you==at your level of ignorance–feels the need to bullsh!t like that..

      May 2, 2012 at 12:47 pm |

Mark, Savage did not bully anyone. That you keep repeating this shows your intentions are dishonest. The remark he did apologize for was made the following day on his blog long after these rude students walked out in the middle of his presentation.

These students should apologize for their behavior as you should apologize to Momoya.
