Columnist Dan Savage stands by comments on 'bulls**t in the Bible'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Columnist and gay-rights advocate Dan Savage is standing by his comment that “we can learn to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about gay people” at a recent conference for high school students, a line that prompted some to walk out and spurred intense online debate.

In a blog post on Sunday, Savage wrote that his remark at a conference for the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association was "being spun as an attack on Christianity. Which is bullshhh… which is untrue.”

“I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised," Savage wrote. "I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against — and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying 'motivated by faith') — because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong.”

Some Christian students walked out of the Seattle speech, prompting another controversial line from Savage: “It’s funny to someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansya**ed people react when you push back.”

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Savage apologized for that specific remark in Sunday’s blog post, writing that his word choice “was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong.”

One of the teachers attending the speech with his students told CNN’s Carol Costello on Monday that he was taken aback by the speech and that he supported the decision of some of his students to walk out of it.

“It took a real dark, hostile turn, certainly, as I saw it,” said Rick Tuttle, a teacher at Sutter Union High School in Southern California. “It became very hostile toward Christianity, to the point that many students did walk out, including some of my students.”

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

“They felt that they were attacked … a very pointed, direct attack on one particular group of students. It’s amazing that we go to an anti-bullying speech and one group of students is picked on in particular, with harsh, profane language.”

Prayer doesn’t not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!*!

    • really?

I've read it. Just recently. And read up on the history of the bible. Not much there that has to do with the day and age we live in now. After reading the bible I'd suggest maybe learning a little history to go with it.

Although I've read the Bible and study religion. I no more need to read the Bible than you need to read The God Delusion or The Evolution of God. Have you read either of those?

TO DARKSTAR: YOURE FOOLISH IF YOU THINK IVE NEVER READ THE BIBLE. AND BELIEVE ME IM THE LAST PERSON TO CANDY COAT ANYTHING ABOUT SCRIPTURE. THE CREATOR OF WORLDS IS ABOUT BUSINESS AND IF YOU ARE OUT OF LINE THAN HE VERY CLEARLY TOLD YOU IN THE BIBLE THAT MISFORTUNE WILL FALL ON YOU. SO NOW IM NOT TRYING TO PRETTY UP THE BIBLE. THE BIBLE IS THE BOOK OF LIFE AND JUST LIKE LIFE HAS REAL ELEMENTS SO DOES THE SCRIPTURE. IF YOU CAN POINT ME TO SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAN WE CAN IRON IT OUT BUT IM SURE YOURE NOT WILLING TO TAKE IT THAT FAR. JUST SPEW CLAIMS AND MOVE ON IS USUALLY HOW PEOPLE LIKE YOU OPERATE

I MEAN SERIOUSLY, THERE'S NOTHING THAT RELATES TO OUR MODERN WORLD IN THE BIBLE. NO OFFENSE BUT I SEE IT DIFFERENTLY. PEOPLE REALLY HAVENT CHANGED MUCH. STILL VIOLENT, THE POWERFUL ARE STILL OPPRESSIVE, PEOPLE STILL LIE, CHEAT, AND STEAL AND ACTUALLY PROBABLY MORE NOW THAN EVER. ADULTERY IS STILL RUNNING RAMPANT. PEOPLE ARE STILL MATERIALISTIC AND SHALLOW. FORESAKING KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM IS STILL PLAGUING MANKIND AND THESE ARE ALL THEMES THAT THE BIBLE ADDRESES SO IM NOT SEEING QUITE WHERE YOURE COMING FROM

      April 30, 2012 at 5:07 pm |
    • WOWUGUYS

      TO HORSES:

ACTUALLY I HAVE READ SOME OF BOTH OF THOSE BOOKS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT PEOPLE WHO WRITE THESE BOOKS CONTINUE TO USE RECYCLED MATERIAL. IF SOMEONE CAN TRULY GIVE ME SOMETHING WORTHWHILE TO READ I WOULD. UNLIKE YOU, I READ MATERIAL FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION THAN MINE AND I CAN CONTAIN MYSELF FROM BECOMING OVEREMOTIONAL. BUT FOR SOME REASON PEOPLE WHO DONT REALLY BELIEVE IN GOD OR THE BIBLE SEEM VERY HOSTILE NOT ALL THE TIME BUT ENOUGH TO MAKE ME TAKE NOTE.

The HATE you received as a response to your warm wishes to everyone is reminiscent of the sentiment the Jews were subjected to prior to the Holocaust.....

Seriously do a Bible search. Nowhere in Christian doctrine does Christ say you should hate gays. You find the verse and I'll eat my hat.... good luck 😉

    • Really-O?

      @steve in illinois-

The bible doesn't say "as a Christian [you] should hate gays", but it pretty clearly indicates god condemns them:
      Romans 1:26-27
      Corinthians 1 6:9-10
      Timothy 1 1:9-10

What's hysterical is the Koran hates Gays way more than the Bible and cals for their death, and the Muslims kill Gays daily. This guy is a wimp to attack the gentle Christians and not attack the REAL Gay hates, the Muslims. They hate women too, but liberals are afraid to address that as well.

    • brain therapist

o.k. then if horses had Gods, how do you reconcile the spewage of so much hatred form those who ar esupposed to stand for TOLERANCE...?
Tolerance means accepting those whom one has differences with, even if they look down upon or judge oneself.
All of this evidence of the hatred, piled up her like so much Andy Gump outhouse content, rally proves that there are many Pseudo-Liberals out there.

How do YOU reconcile the hate...?

Could it be that you are convinced that your HATE is less of a personal and societal cancer because your own moral compass is pointed toward the real "true north" ...and because you are smarter and wiser than ever member of the huge groups of human beings you stereotype and denigrate...?

Or is it that it's o.k. to hate them because they hated you first...? That's a 2rd grade answer, let's not forget, you're supposed to be occupying the intellectual high ground here..

Or maybe you believe that their hate is darkness and yours is righteous...? It doesn't really matter either way, .... it's living and breathing inside you now.

You might want to gather your PSEUDO-Liberal cohorts and collectively regurgitate the bile and make a pool for your dunking stool., surely you'll want enough to immerse them completely ..and don't forget, if they don't drown, they're real Christians, if they come up lifeless, they were actually closet atheists...

Even though you tell yourself otherwise, not EVERY Christian out there hates you and your "US"... They are as diverse a group of people as Atheists are. There are "good" ones and "bad" ones. Just because a few repugnant and vile trolls who call themselves Christians, plague this forum, doesn't mean ALL of THEM are acting in a manner reminiscent of the way the Crusaders did when they persecuted and demonized "Non-believers" ...right before they put their heads on sticks...

Yet your hoard is sharpening your own stakes to mount skulls upon all in the name of TOLERANCE...?

All of this spewage is really reminiscent of the way Jews were demonized in preparation for the Holocaust.

And you justify it in your own brain, it's simply amazing.

Remember, torchlight only penetrates a few feet into the darkness.

Those of you who abhor Christianity are most likley ignorant of the teachings of Christ. Those of you reading the Old Testament scriptures who see a hateful God are most definately ignorant of the messages within. The sad part is that many who claim to be believers and followers of Christ are equally as ignorant and continue to not only fool themselves into justifying behavior that opposes the belief system that they claim to embrace but they misrepresent the message as they live their lives outside the faith. Mat. 7:14 For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

ok my theistic friend, since you raised the issue now persuade us clearly and convincingly that:

      1. jesus raised lazarus (or any other being, human or otherwise) from the dead, and
      2. jesus himself was resurrected on the third day after his death on the cross.

and if, indeed you successfully discharge your burden that these two biblical assertions are other than myths then think about it, you will also proven that zombies can exist unless, of course, you can be equally as clear and convincing that they're don't.

btw: quoting from the bible as proof of assertions made within it is not proof of anything. it would be like me saying that "Black is white and that the proof of that statement is this sentence."

It is true that some "Christians" do push a hate agenda, but can't that be said of any religion. There are hypocrites in any religion that decide to use their religious beliefs as a front to push their own twisted agenda and misled beliefs.

This kind of lumping is the same as saying that all paganists are devil worshippers when people that worship anything except the Abrahamic religions.

Ting, I apologize for any "Christian" who has attacked you for your beliefs true Christianity does not call for the persecution of others as it is a personal decision to worship God. As Christians, we are merely instructed to teach others about what we believe and not force it upon anyone.

We live in a country where no one should be persecuted for their beliefs and just as with these children, no one should be required to listen to someone speak ill of their personal beliefs.

    April 30, 2012 at 4:44 pm |
  14. Paul

Old Testament (which all the "hate" you speak of is derived from) is also used in the torah and taught by Jews as well and is completely different than the New Testament which is the gospels of Christ and tells the story of Jesus and his teaching of peace, unconditional love and acceptance.
The Old Testament is essentially used as a reference for metaphorical teachings more so than it is actually preached (at least in the catholic religion). Evangelicals do however believe this book to be fact (which is simply not true or sane for that matter). However, for everyone, please do a LITTLE research before posting. Thanks.

Correct, it's amazing to witness an individual foaming at the mouth with hatred and then see hoards of others who supposedly stand for tolerance not only stand idly by and not denounce the obvious stereotyping, intolerance bigotry hatred malevolence, but revel in their contribution to it, piling on in a mob mentality state.

It serves as an interesting insight into mob mentality and how low points in human history such as the witch hunts and the holocaust actually occurred...

Instead of internalizing their spewage, it is recommended that one view this cyber-stoning circle as a laboratory and them as malignant lab specimens. Severely disturbed brains in specimen jars reacting on a one cell organism level to basic stimulai.

Care is needed in the handling of this toxic waste as one can easily internalize the malevolence and become infected with the same disease as they are.

Just one more thing regarding "taking people by force and making the [sic] slaves, while an accepted practice for centuries I believe is wrong". You only "believe" it is wrong? If the immorality of slavery is relative and subject to one's personal moral (immoral) code, then exactly what IS truly immoral? If you refer to the ten commandments, you've dug your own grave.

A real Christian doesn't "dish" out anything – no need. God doesn't need us to defend him or his word – it is what it is – whether we understand or agree with it or not. Wasting time on such nonsense simply takes away from your own quality of life and enjoyment of what God has given you (unless you can create on your own?). Remember the message always comes down to LOVE.

Remember the message always comes down to LOVE.

Really so that is why only 33% of the people on this planet actually believe in your god. That means that the other 67% of people on this planet don’t believe in your particular God. Now based on what is written in the bible, those that don’t believe will burn in hell for all eternity. That means that roughly 4 billion people will be going to hell. That does not come down to “love” that is pure evil and proves what a monster your god is.

God doesn't require anyone to believe in him, but he does believe what he created is worth his love. Why? I sure don't know. So you have free will to do as you wish. It does not negate love for you.
