Biden's support for gay marriage matches most Catholics' views

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Apparent White House division over gay marriage - with Vice President Joe Biden saying Sunday that he is “absolutely comfortable” with the idea, going further than President Obama has on the issue – mirrors a nation that is evenly divided on the matter. Recent polls show that about half of Americans favor legalized gay marriage, while half oppose it, with support for the idea gaining significant ground over the past 15 years.

Pew’s latest polling on the issue, conducted late last year, found that 46% of Americans support favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally, while 44% are opposed. Support for gay civil unions is substantially higher, with a clear majority of Americans supporting such arrangements.

Feelings about gay marriage correlate to various religious traditions and levels of religiosity, with those nonaffiliated with any religion most supportive of gay marriage. It’s worth noting the dramatic recent shifts on the issue among Roman Catholics, whose ranks include Biden.

Despite the Roman Catholic Church’s rigorous opposition to gays getting the right to marry, Pew found that Catholics support gay marriage by a margin of 52% to 37%. That’s a shift from 2010, when just 46% of Catholics favored gay marriage.

Among white Catholics, support is even higher at 57%, while Hispanic Catholics are evenly divided.

The religious group most opposed to gay marriage is white evangelical Protestants, among whom 74% oppose it, according to Pew. Sixty-two percent of black Protestants, a key part of President Obama’s political base, also oppose gay marriage.

After Biden voiced support for gay marriage, a senior Obama campaign adviser said there was no difference on the issue between the vice president and the president, who once said he opposed gay marriage but has since said his views on the matter are “evolving.”

"What the VP said - that all married couples should have the same legal rights - is (precisely) POTUS' position," said David Axelrod, a senior adviser to Obama's re-election campaign, in a Twitter message.

The issue has gotten attention recently as North Carolinians prepare to vote Tuesday on a ballot initiative that would amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage, reinforcing a state law banning such unions. The Rev. Billy Graham has endorsed the measure, while former President Bill Clinton has taped a robo call opposing it.

You are the true definition of IDIOT!! So full of hate and you come here and scream your religious delusions at us telling us we're wrong, when all we want is to see everyone treated equally. You are immoral!
That was not the point being made moron by Prime...the point is that ho.mo.se.xual relations are perfectly natural regardless of what species. Yes, we are all related to animals one way or the other...a basic science class would teach you this. Somebody suggested Thorazine for you, personally I think that should be electro-shock therapy with a beautiful white huggy type jacket and a ball gag!

Not only has it be documented in 1500 other species but hundreds of thousands of experts in psychology and science are staying it's natural. Your prejudice and hate isn't founded on REAL facts.

We are all animals. Just because we make fancy grunts and build fancy nests does not mean we have suddenly become a new sort of creature.
When you sit on the toilet and perform your animal excretory functions, you cannot avoid the fact that you are only an animal.
You could super-glue your sphincter shut, but then all the sh!t would just come out of your mouth 24 / 7.

Maybe the government should get out of the 'marriage' business:

Offer a 'civil union' for any couple, for all legal purposes, maybe one that can be broken if desired, but neither party can enter into another one for a set period of time, such as four or five years.

Let churches marry anyone they want to and refuse anyone they want to refuse.

    Separate Church from State.

    May 7, 2012 at 10:45 am |
    • Nonimus

How about a step further? A civil union is just a contract between two people, why not just have everyone make up their own contracts? Legal consent would still be upheld, obviously, but any other arrangement would be strictly up to the parties involved.
As far as children, biological parents would be ultimately responsible for children, unless a valid contract stating otherwise was accepted by the state as sufficient for the care of the child.

When the American south was forced to rescind the Jim Crow laws and accept racial integration, it was Baptists who most strongly opposed equality.
Wallie Criswell, an extremely popular and influential Southern Baptist Minister famously said "Let them integrate! Let them sit up there in their dirty shirts and make all their fine speeches. But they are all a bunch of infidels, dying from the neck up."
Scarcely half a century later, the zeitgeist has shifted so radically that such open racism is considered abhorrent to the very same Christian sect that spouted scripture to justify insti.tutionalized bigotry.
I fervently hope that the prevailing Baptist condemnation of ho.mose.xuality will soon be viewed with the same sense of shame that the memory of segragation elicits.

Claiming that gay folks don't deserve the same civil rights as straight folks because your version of a god wants you to think that gays are icky, show that you choose to be ignorant about the constîtution. May 7, 2012 at 9:44 am |
  16. Doc Vestibule

Having had this debate many times on this board, I think I can sum up the usual arguments.
    1) Gays are unnatural because they can't reproduce.
    – Gay folk are biologically capable of reproducing. They can be egg/sperm donors.
    2) Gay marriage undermines traditional families
    – The traditional family is a rarity these days thanks to the prevalence of divorce. Is it not better for a child to have two loving parents in a stable home as opposed to 1 parent and/or shuffling between homes?
    3) The government shouldn't force religious people to support something they think is wrong
    – No one is forcing religious people to support anything, merely tolerate it. If your church doesn't want to perform the ceremony, they don't have to. Nobody is going to hold a gun to a Baptist preacher's head and force them. If the couple in question wants a church wedding, they can go see the Anglicans or the Unitarians.
    4) The Bible says it's wrong. 1 Corinthians 6:9 and Romans 1:26
    – The corinthians passage only condemns gays in certain translations. The original greek words "malakoi" and "ars.enkotai" are frequently translated as "male prosti/tutes". The Romans passage can be interpreted as God condeming those people more for rejecting Christianity adn their natural hetero tendencies by joining in a pagan or.gy.
    5) It makes Christians feel all squidgy and icky.
    – A lot of people feel that way about Christians. Personally, I want to remove every big ol' Jesus/cross tattoo I see with a cheese grater but I won't try to prevent tattoo parlours from giving them.

    May 7, 2012 at 9:32 am |
    • Doc Vestibule

Oh! I forgot one that God's Oldest Dreamer brought up.
      6) It's a slippery slope down to legalizing pedophilia, zoophilia, and all other manner of perversion.
      – Two words: INFORMED CONSENT. What consenting adults do in private is nobody's business but their own.
Children, animals, the mentally handicapped and inanimate objects cannot give informed consent.

Sadly the thing that isn't dying is the bigotry. One would or might see the nation becoming a Mormonists dream country by legalizing polygamy of both s.e.x.i.s.m.s.! Drawing lines is fine and dandy with my voicedness concernments!

      @God's oldest dreamer
American IS is a culture of decadence. Why do you think obesity is the #1 health issue in the US?
The young aren't taught to be "se./xually permissive" – but youth is a valuable commodity that is quite readily exploited by the media. Stuff like those old Gap kids ads explicitly se/xualize kids – and to sell jeans, no less – yet most people don't see a problem with it.
Ever seen teh show "Toddlers in Tiaras"? I bet most of those mothers are Christian (seems those pageants are most popular in the Bible Belt states) and teach their kids that se.x is wrong, yet see no contradiction in dressing them up like toddling geishas.

God's Oldest D-bag: A bit of hyperbole......"The Sky Is Falling! The Sky Is Falling!"

To equate humans having consentual relations with bestiality is absurd. If that is the best argument you have, then your asinine bigotry is going to disappear soon.

      @G.O.D.,
You're exaggerating, no one will be allowed to marry animals, since animals are not capable of "consent" in the legal sense. Polygamy, on the other hand, is a possibility, but I don't see how that would affect the US either.

    • Nonimus

      @G.O.D.,
Ah, se.xual permissiveness, now that may be an issue, a cultural issue though. However, wouldn't it be better for Gays to at least be monogamous gays, as that would cut don't on promiscuity, right? Same-s.ex marriage would help that happen.

We know God's oldest dreamer chooses to be ignorant about science. Apparently they also choose to be ignorant about the constîtution and the concept of informed consent.

Sadly, they also choose to ignorant about the use of common punctuation.

ever notice you cant make two male or two female connectors work?marriage is the same way.stop trying to put the square peg in the round hole.it just wont fit.

    • Mirosal

If your peg is square, might I suggest you see a physician? (by the way, that means a medical doctor - we'll try to use small words around you)

    • I'm The Best!

As an engineer I can guaranty that those things you named are not only possible but I have personally made two male connectors. And as long as that square hole is big enough, that round peg will fit. Just because something makes you uncomfortable doesn't mean it should be illegal. You're just a bigot trying to make everyone else as angry as you.

@ebonics hamster: so opposite gender marriages work out so great that same gender couples shouldn't be given the same rights? hmmm let's see how this train of thinking takes us shall we? seeing males are genetically superior in upper body strength to females, women shouldn't be allowed to wear males clothing, work a male job or vote. we could go into other areas with this mentality, but truly i can't even stomache those repulsive ideas of inequality to even mention them. eventually this train of thought leads to areas of history humans aren't proud of. if you give me your ethnic background, gender, age, occupation i can show you i greater detail how inequality can effect you. the main reason i'm atheist; science depicts us as just what we are, humans.

Marriage, in a legal sense has little to do with se.x, regardless of what you think 'works' or not.

    • Jacques Strappe, World Famous French Ball Juggler

What if the man was paralyzed from the waist down? Should he still be allowed to marry? After all, to people like hamsta, if the peg doesn't fit (aka, a man having se-x with a woman) they shouldn't be allowed to marry. The whole idea of se-x being the basis of marriage is stupid. If the only point of marriage was se-x, then those paralyzed from the waist down should not be allowed to marry. This is the kind of logic fundamentalist Christians use.

There are two steps to knowing you are on the right side of an issue:

First, ask, "what do most conservative Catholics or evangelical Christians think about the issue?"

Second, adopt the opposite view. This rule of thumb works on virtually all social issues, including

    (i) teaching evolution in schools
    (ii) embryonic stem cell research
(iii) a woman's right to choose
    (iv) assisted suicide
    (v) gays serving in the military
    (vi) immunizing against HPV
(vii) teaching older teens about safe $ex and contraception
(viii) my (admittedly trivial) right to buy a nice bottle of Chilean red wine on a Sunday – at least in areas where the son worshippers are still politically strong
(ix) separation of church and state
    (x) telling the truth about AIDS and the use of condoms to prevent it.

I guess that, when you honestly, in your heart, believe that an all-knowing, immortal super-being, powerful enough to create the entire Universe and its billions of galaxies about 13,720,000,000 years ago, has a personal interest in your $ex life, you are bound to adopt nonsensical positions on social issues.

I hope that one day we will no longer consider basing 21st Century social policies on the perceived wishes of some ficti.tious Bronze Age sky-fairy invented in a Palestinian slum.

Your veiw of and upon the Celestial Cosmos is a dark and stagnant relative of the scientific "stone ages"! Imagine if you will when the Time comes, (and it will) for science to make a bold step declaring that our once narrow-minded view of spatial accords is flawed! There are more universes within the Clestial Cosmos than could ever be imagined! Our perceptions of the Cosmos was once as a confinement of sedintary roots but nowadays we can see further into the Cosmos and see with much ferver that there is no end to our viewing galactic clusters! They seem to go on practically forever or as far as we can humbly see!

"...when the Time comes, (and it will) for science to make a bold step declaring that our once narrow-minded view of spatial accords is flawed! "
What exactly are "spatial accords" and why do you think science currently has them wrong?

Agreed for the most part. I would change "teaching older teens" to "teaching younger teens". I was 13 my first time and that goes back several decades. Teens usually find out sooner, rather than later, and the schools and parents are either in denial, or are the last to know.

Colin, yea instead of basing it off that Palestinian slum, you want to base it off of Pagan Rome and Greece! What a joke, no thanks!
