Pastor's comments about gays draw protestersBy Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor (CNN)–Hundreds of protesters gathered this weekend in Maiden, North Carolina, to voice their displeasure with a pastor's statement that gays and lesbians should be rounded up behind electric fences. Sheriff Coy Reid estimated between 1,500 and 2,000 protestors came to the Catawba County Justice Center for a peaceful protest on Sunday. He said only two citations for noise violations were issued and there were no arrests. The protest was organized by the Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate in response to a Mother's Day sermon by Pastor Charles Worley at Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden. "I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Worley said to his congregation on May 13. A video of his comments went viral on YouTube. "Build a great big, large fence - 50 or 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there," Worley said. "Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce." Protestors chanted, "Love not hate," as the lined the road outside the Justice Center, which is 12 miles from thechurch. CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories Organizers of the protest said they wanted to counter what they called the pastor's hateful words with love and stressed prior to the event that "our Peace Keepers will respond quickly and vigorously to any behavior that detracts from the peaceful, non-violent plans of this event." On Friday night, vandals targeted the Providence Road Baptist Church, Lt. Daryl McCarty of the Catawba County Sheriff's office told CNN. "It appears that someone tried to set the air conditioning unit on fire in retaliation about his remarks against homosexuals and lesbians from the pulpit." McCarty said there was "no extensive damage or anything. The incident appears to have happened on Friday night. It wasn't a big enough fire. It only burned the cover off of some wires." An electric company easily repaired the damage Saturday, according to McCarty. Sheriff Reid said trash was lit under the air conditioning unit to start the fire. The unit is up against a brick wall and he said it did not seem like the vandals were attempting to burn down the building, saying, "It appeared they were trying to disrupt the service." The local fire marshal and a sheriff's deputy are investigating the fire further, Reid said. He also noted that Worley had received death threats after his comments and his department was actively following up on them. Repeated calls by CNN to the church and to the pastor's home for comment have not been returned. When Worley was approached outside his home on Sunday by CNN's Gary Tuchman and asked whether he would take back any of his comments, the pastor declined to comment. The church's website has also been down, but it had described the house of worship as independent and fundamentalist. It represents a Baptist tradition self-described as "old-time religion" and the website said church members consider the 1611 King James Version of the Bible to be the "inerrant Word of God." The church appears to be unconnected with any broader denomination. The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Baptist group, noted the Providence Road Baptist in Maiden is not affiliated with its 16-million member denomination and condemned the pastor's comments. Last week in Maiden, members of the church vigorously defended their pastor, who has been at the church for more than two decades. Some church members, who declined to give their names, said his words had been taken out of context. "He said he would feed them!" some church members told CNN, referring to the Worley's idea for rounding up gays. Another church member, who declined to give his name, said that "being gay and lesbian or homosexual is wrong according to the Bible. ... It's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." The sheriff said his deputies will be paying extra attention to the church building in the wake of the vandalism and threats. The church has about 300 members, he said. Studies have shown that children of lesbians actually perform better on some standardized tests than do the kids of straight couples.

Standardized tests are just ONE aspect of life. are they well adjusted? if they are boy, when they get married do they have a good sense of what the wife's role is (hint: modelled on what they saw mom do) and what their role is (hint: modelled on dad)? you cant measure these things.

That's kind of funny. Do you know what my dad taught me? My dad taught me that money is more important than family, that his kids are possessions to be used in the fight to cause the woman he had cheated on the most pain, and that his life was more important than mine.
My mother, on the other hand taught me how to jump start a car, how to balance a budget, how to buy groceries for 3 on $50, how to stand up for myself, how to problem solve, how to choke up on the bat and keep my eye on the ball.
Children do not NEED a mother and a father. Children need parents who love them. Children need discipline and affection, help with the homework, responsibility and freedom. The gender of the adults in their life is not meaningful.

so please explain to me what exactly is "normal"? i have heard this so many times from so many different types of people that it seems everything is "normal" based on what that person sees as being similar to themselves. so if you're implying surpressing "deviant thoughts" is normal, does that mean you're surpressing your urges for the same gender? i don't buy into the whole "god made everything" bs; i look at a male and i can see the attractiveness of the male form as well as looking at a female and truly understanding the beauty of such a creature. there is no such thing as normal, just to get you up to speed. there is average, which to get an average you take into account for everyone and find the middle ground.

Its like talking to a wall.. you see, they have this 'religion of science' which causes them to think they are all powerful and deny Science's inadequacies. For example, take the flagellum, a vital part of many bacteria, which evolved millions of years ago. This pastor is blind, has no idea about God. In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus talks about humans making two into one, so that man is not man and woman is not woman, so man is woman and woman is man. Also, he talks about making woman into man as in the case of Mary, to enjoin her with the living Spirit. This is Oneness, this is Now. The "Christians" are lost, they do not even read the 4 gospel bible correctly, let alone bother to find and read the other 104 Books/Gospels. God has made their hearts cold and closed, they eyes Blind. Pastors like this, and Popes, are the AntiChrist, there is little in their hearts that brings them closer to God, or to understanding the words of Jesus. Bless them all!

It seems to me that you simply aren't comfortable with people who don't think exactly like you do. Perhaps you should try to get out more, meet different types of people. You'll find that most people have the same concerns: Family, home, job and survival. Open your mind, and you'll probably be surprised at how foolish you feel when you realize that you discriminate against people for no real reason.

Our current "western" understanding of what marriage is has only been around for a hundred years or so, and has not even spread globally as there are many different versions of marriage still today, so to claim the way we have it now is how it's been for thousands of years is just plain moronic. Also you fail at every level of your attempt to understand this issue and are unable to present even one valid point of the negative effect you claim from allowing gays to marry. Your one and only premise is that it is unhealthy for children yet all the actual studies done have shown the exact opposite, that children raised in gay families not only do as well but slightly better than their straight parented friends.
