Pastor's comments about gays draw protesters

By Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor

(CNN)–Hundreds of protesters gathered this weekend in Maiden, North Carolina, to voice their displeasure with a pastor's statement that gays and lesbians should be rounded up behind electric fences.

Sheriff Coy Reid estimated between 1,500 and 2,000 protestors came to the Catawba County Justice Center for a peaceful protest on Sunday. He said only two citations for noise violations were issued and there were no arrests.

The protest was organized by the Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate in response to a Mother's Day sermon by Pastor Charles Worley at Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Worley said to his congregation on May 13. A video of his comments went viral on YouTube.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there," Worley said. "Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

Protestors chanted, "Love not hate," as the lined the road outside the Justice Center, which is 12 miles from thechurch.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Organizers of the protest said they wanted to counter what they called the pastor's hateful words with love and stressed prior to the event that "our Peace Keepers will respond quickly and vigorously to any behavior that detracts from the peaceful, non-violent plans of this event."

On Friday night, vandals targeted the Providence Road Baptist Church, Lt. Daryl McCarty of the Catawba County Sheriff's office told CNN. "It appears that someone tried to set the air conditioning unit on fire in retaliation about his remarks against homosexuals and lesbians from the pulpit."

McCarty said there was "no extensive damage or anything. The incident appears to have happened on Friday night. It wasn't a big enough fire. It only burned the cover off of some wires."

An electric company easily repaired the damage Saturday, according to McCarty.

Sheriff Reid said trash was lit under the air conditioning unit to start the fire. The unit is up against a brick wall and he said it did not seem like the vandals were attempting to burn down the building, saying, "It appeared they were trying to disrupt the service."

The local fire marshal and a sheriff's deputy are investigating the fire further, Reid said.

He also noted that Worley had received death threats after his comments and his department was actively following up on them.

Repeated calls by CNN to the church and to the pastor's home for comment have not been returned. When Worley was approached outside his home on Sunday by CNN's Gary Tuchman and asked whether he would take back any of his comments, the pastor declined to comment.

The church's website has also been down, but it had described the house of worship as independent and fundamentalist. It represents a Baptist tradition self-described as "old-time religion" and the website said church members consider the 1611 King James Version of the Bible to be the "inerrant Word of God."

The church appears to be unconnected with any broader denomination. The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Baptist group, noted the Providence Road Baptist in Maiden is not affiliated with its 16-million member denomination and condemned the pastor's comments.

Last week in Maiden, members of the church vigorously defended their pastor, who has been at the church for more than two decades.

Some church members, who declined to give their names, said his words had been taken out of context. "He said he would feed them!" some church members told CNN, referring to the Worley's idea for rounding up gays.
Worley "takes a real firm stand on the Bible and what it says about different things," said church member Joe Heffner. "Whether I like it or not or whether anybody else likes it."

Another church member, who declined to give his name, said that "being gay and lesbian or homosexual is wrong according to the Bible. ... It's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."

The sheriff said his deputies will be paying extra attention to the church building in the wake of the vandalism and threats. The church has about 300 members, he said.

Reid, who has been with the sheriff's department since 1979, said the area had never seen anything quite like this.
"We hope it's over," he said. "The protestors have had their say now, so we're hoping it all dies down."

Do you get all your exercise jumping to conclusions, Naturally Stupid? Pedophilia, infanticide, disease and starvation ALL cause harm.

Do explain what "harm" is caused by gay marriage. I can wait. Of course, you'll be fumbling around an hour from now in your vain attempts to make a point.

When you can post a single shred of proof that studies have shown, go right ahead, moron. You can't. That's why you have to keep pretending that pedophilia has anything to do with gay rights. You don't have any sources that support your claims. You think if you just keep playing a shell game you'll be able to fool someone.

Studies have shown that children of lesbians actually perform better on some standardized tests than do the kids of straight couples.

Thanks for showing your ignorance, Naturally Dumb.

Standardized tests are just ONE aspect of life. are they well adjusted? if they are boy, when they get married do they have a good sense of what the wife's role is (hint: modelled on what they saw mom do) and what their role is (hint: modelled on dad)? you cant measure these things.

i have dealt with this southern baptist mentality my whole childhood, they're a bunch of hypocrites that cherry pick the bible to uphold their thoughts on what it saids. the sheriff wants the protestors to "go away" or is hoping because of one protest we will leave this ass to hate some more, i say protest outside his house and that church until it falls down like the walls of jericho. give that man not a second of peace, or just tie him to a horse and slap it's hind quarters sending him out of town.

This man is the sort of ignorance that is controlling the minds of the weak. This is another reason religion should be discontinued, banned, or practiced in the home where your words of ignorance can't affect the rest of the intelligent world....these kinds of speaches from pulpits to those who can't think for themselves remind me of a man from many years ago.....his name was Adolf....he spouted poison and fools drank it......so ... no more church..no more religion...just free thinking men and women who know right from wrong living in a world where if you are different it doesn't matter....

Bob...Funny you mention Hitler because he was no preacher or pastor. You and those like you really believe discrimination or bias will end without religion?! You call yourself intelligent yet your argument is ignorant. People spout hatefull speach and kill people every single day. There is g€nocide to this day and has nothing to do wirh religion! Get your head out of the ground and look at the world around you. What he said was diatastefull but not worthy of this much attention. This pastor has no real intention of building a fenced in area, it was just talk. Actually I have read much much worse on this blog about this pastor. If you speak against hate speech then do not do it yourself otherwise it is you who is a hypocrite, by definition.

Dothemath...Your attempt to make an argument screams of absolutely no biblical knowledge. Man was not created defective, man was perfect, man sinned and now a proccess to restore perfection is underway. There are issues greater than man as to why it was not an immedate action. God is the 'Alph@ and Om€ga' always been here and always will. This concept no man can grasp because all we have experienced has a beginning and end. But just because we can not understand it does not make it untrue. If gay couples are adopting a child it does NOT have a mother and father figure prior to the adoption. I suppose a good home where a child is loved is worse than nothing.

if i was a kid in a foster home and had a chance to be adopted by parents that cared I wouldnt think them being gay would be an issue for me.

@natural: funny how "Hence, marriages should be "till death do us apart" and defined as man + woman"

by some couples literally, means til death do they part. so one or the other ends up killing the whole family.

second thing; why can't a father teach his kids how both the softer side of things while still being able to play ball and go fishing with his children. i show my son affection and encouragement, yet i also rough house and wrestle with him. he watches me cook dinner and play video games.......so your catagories for "male" "female" family roles are far outdated.

      @The Natural way

just about how a dad teaches his kids to play ball ball and a mom the softer side of life.. and how both are needed. Hence, marriages should be "till death do us apart" and defined as man + woman

That's kind of funny. Do you know what my dad taught me? My dad taught me that money is more important than family, that his kids are possessions to be used in the fight to cause the woman he had cheated on the most pain, and that his life was more important than mine.

My mother, on the other hand taught me how to jump start a car, how to balance a budget, how to buy groceries for 3 on $50, how to stand up for myself, how to problem solve, how to choke up on the bat and keep my eye on the ball.

Children do not NEED a mother and a father. Children need parents who love them. Children need discipline and affection, help with the homework, responsibility and freedom. The gender of the adults in their life is not meaningful.

so please explain to me what exactly is "normal"? i have heard this so many times from so many different types of people that it seems everything is "normal" based on what that person sees as being similar to themselves. so if you're implying surpressing "deviant thoughts" is normal, does that mean you're surpressing your urges for the same gender? i don't buy into the whole "god made everything" bs; i look at a male and i can see the attractiveness of the male form as well as looking at a female and truly understanding the beauty of such a creature. there is no such thing as normal, just to get you up to speed. there is average, which to get an average you take into account for everyone and find the middle ground.

Its like talking to a wall.. you see, they have this 'religion of science' which causes them to think they are all powerful and deny Science's inadequacies. For example, take the flagellum, a vital part of many bacteria, which evolved millions of years ago. It is an unbelievably complex machinery that breaks down if even one gene isnt there, or isnt there in time. But still they believe it happened by chance. Like a swiss time piece or the space station happened by chance.

Prayer doesn’t not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

This pastor my have the spirit of the anti-christ. Listen to Luke 9:51-56 "And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save. And they went to another village" This pastor sounds like a worker of iniquity. Matthew 7:21-23 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity" God's will for His people is this : Hosea 6:6 "For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings" Matthew 9:10-13 "And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw [it], they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" Today's Christianity is Babylon (confusion)

This pastor is blind, has no idea about God. In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus talks about humans making two into one, so that man is not man and woman is not woman, so man is woman and woman is man. Also, he talks about making woman into man as in the case of Mary, to enjoin her with the living Spirit. This is Oneness, this is Now. The "Christians" are lost, they do not even read the 4 gospel bible correctly, let alone bother to find and read the other 104 Books/Gospels. God has made their hearts cold and closed, they eyes Blind. Pastors like this, and Popes, are the AntiChrist, there is little in their hearts that brings them closer to God, or to understanding the words of Jesus. Bless them all!

It wouldn't have been so bad if he had simply said "I don't think that lifestyle is right" and left it at that.

@pervert alert: As always you are wrong!!! Sin does not exist outside of your buybull and your god is as real as Cinderella. If all you have to back your bigotry is that book then you are living a pathetic life. Attempt to read something based in the 21st century, not written by sheep herding men from 2000 years ago when they had no clue about anything. People like you need to be taken off the streets and out of society, you really are suffering from mental illness and require help. Only children and schizophrenics have imaginary friends...which of these are you?

Personally I'll believe the following article which is based in the present century than your books of fairy tales.

Mary: remember that kids need a male role model (dad) and a female role model (mom) day in and day out. And they do best when they are raised by their biological parents. Both these have been proven. One name I remmeber is researcher David Popenoe. Im sure there are others.

@natural: children need nurturing caring parents, whether male/ female, male/male, or female/female. each couple has to take roles of disciplinarian and encouragement.....but as long as children know they are loved and respected for being their own person and encouraged to make choices as adults they turn out ok. plus with all the opposing gender couples screwing their kids up i don't see how same gender couples could do much worse. don't believe me open a paper or a news network webpage and just read how many children have been neglected, abused or abandoned by their "loving" opposing gender parents.

Not only would gay and lesbians continue to give birth if placed behind an electric fence; both would be born into the free population. Gayness happens in the very beginning of gestation in a certain percentage of mothers, more so with males than females.

Gays reproduce all the time. I have donated my sperm to a black lesbian friend of mine twice. The two Cutest mixed race kids too.

I got on this thread late so don't know if anyone already mentioned that the idiot Pastor's plan wouldn't even work if he could fence them in. Gay people would continue to be naturally born every day within the unfenced population.

I was watching a tv program about a polygamist mormon who takes his youngest wife on an african safari fro homeymoon.

When their guide tells them Lions naturally form packs with on the male and many females, they chime in "see, that is the natural way!". Ditto Elephants.

So we have to ask the question : is every "natural" way good for society or should we draw lines? Can we rise above our genetics (even if that is what it is.. I disagree)?

When a younger lion defeats an older lion king, he first kills all the young cubs so he can perpetuate his DNA, and to make the lionesses come to heat sooner. That too is natural (sic)

NW - Exactly what harm is there in polygamy? Exactly what harm is there in a same s.ex marriage? I think we can all see the problem about killing chilren. Murder was considered a crime long before your bible was written and indeed rules against killing are a foundation of most civilizations.

It seems to me that you simply aren't comfortable with people who don't think exactly like you do. Perhaps you should try to get out more, meet different types of people. You'll find that most people have the same concerns: Family, home, job and survival. Open your mind, and you'll probably be surprised at how foolish you feel when you realize that you discriminate against people for no real reason.

Draw the line where the behavior directly harms others

    • Mass Debater

So are you saying if "gay" is the natural way shouldn't society be able to rise above that and draw lines otherwise we might be killing each others babies? Her point about about polygamy is pointless when you look at all the other diverse mating situations in the animal kingdom. How do you know if being gay is just natures subtle way of attempting to control population, and drawing lines against gays or abortion night just lead to our swift extinction? Not all that great being civilized when your extinct...

    • TheNaturalWay

@ Mass Debater, I was just making the point that everything 'natural' isnt necessarily good for us as a society. We got to make rules and enforce them, by social (i.e. shaming, social norms etc.) or legal (govt laws) ways.

One of them is that a marriage is 1 man + 1 woman. Its been thsi way for thousands of years, across the globe. Why change it now?

      May 29, 2012 at 6:14 am |
    • TheNaturalWay

@ Sam Stone, gay stuff (and no-fault divorce) harms kids by depriving them of mom (or dad). They need both mom and dad. That has been proven by lots of research, for example by scientist David Popenoe. Also its been proven that p * d o s are more likely to be self identifying as g * y s. So there's the harm for you.

      May 29, 2012 at 6:17 am |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

"Has been proven by lots of research." I notice you continue to claim nonsense without providing any proof of your idiotic assumptions. Cite your sources, Naturally Braindead. There is no research that shows that children of gay or lesbian couples are harmed in any way. Prove otherwise.

      May 29, 2012 at 10:24 am |
    • Mass Debater

"Its been thsi way for thousands of years, across the globe. Why change it now?"

Our current "western" understanding of what marriage is has only been around for a hundred years or so, and has not even spread globally as there are many different versions of marriage still today, so to claim the way we have it now is how it's been for thousands of years is just plain moronic. Also you fail at every level of your attempt to understand this issue and are unable to present even one valid point of the negative effect you claim from allowing gays to marry. Your one and only premise is that it is unhealthy for children yet all the actual studies done have shown the exact opposite, that children raised in gay families not only do as well but slightly better than their straight parented friends. So without even one leg to stand on you need to reexamine why you are displaying these objective signs of bigotry.
