Pastor's comments about gays draw protesters

By Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor

(CNN)–Hundreds of protesters gathered this weekend in Maiden, North Carolina, to voice their displeasure with a pastor's statement that gays and lesbians should be rounded up behind electric fences.

Sheriff Coy Reid estimated between 1,500 and 2,000 protestors came to the Catawba County Justice Center for a peaceful protest on Sunday. He said only two citations for noise violations were issued and there were no arrests.

The protest was organized by the Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate in response to a Mother's Day sermon by Pastor Charles Worley at Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Worley said to his congregation on May 13. A video of his comments went viral on YouTube.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there," Worley said. "Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

Protestors chanted, "Love not hate," as the lined the road outside the Justice Center, which is 12 miles from thechurch.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Organizers of the protest said they wanted to counter what they called the pastor's hateful words with love and stressed prior to the event that "our Peace Keepers will respond quickly and vigorously to any behavior that detracts from the peaceful, non-violent plans of this event."

On Friday night, vandals targeted the Providence Road Baptist Church, Lt. Daryl McCarty of the Catawba County Sheriff's office told CNN. "It appears that someone tried to set the air conditioning unit on fire in retaliation about his remarks against homosexuals and lesbians from the pulpit."

McCarty said there was "no extensive damage or anything. The incident appears to have happened on Friday night. It wasn't a big enough fire. It only burned the cover off of some wires."

An electric company easily repaired the damage Saturday, according to McCarty.

Sheriff Reid said trash was lit under the air conditioning unit to start the fire. The unit is up against a brick wall and he said it did not seem like the vandals were attempting to burn down the building, saying, "It appeared they were trying to disrupt the service."

The local fire marshal and a sheriff's deputy are investigating the fire further, Reid said.

He also noted that Worley had received death threats after his comments and his department was actively following up on them.

Repeated calls by CNN to the church and to the pastor's home for comment have not been returned. When Worley was approached outside his home on Sunday by CNN's Gary Tuchman and asked whether he would take back any of his comments, the pastor declined to comment.

The church's website has also been down, but it had described the house of worship as independent and fundamentalist. It represents a Baptist tradition self-described as "old-time religion" and the website said church members consider the 1611 King James Version of the Bible to be the "inerrant Word of God."

The church appears to be unconnected with any broader denomination. The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Baptist group, noted the Providence Road Baptist in Maiden is not affiliated with its 16-million member denomination and condemned the pastor's comments.

Last week in Maiden, members of the church vigorously defended their pastor, who has been at the church for more than two decades.

Some church members, who declined to give their names, said his words had been taken out of context. "He said he would feed them!" some church members told CNN, referring to the Worley's idea for rounding up gays.
Worley "takes a real firm stand on the Bible and what it says about different things," said church member Joe Heffner. "Whether I like it or not or whether anybody else likes it."

Another church member, who declined to give his name, said that "being gay and lesbian or homosexual is wrong according to the Bible. ... It's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."

The sheriff said his deputies will be paying extra attention to the church building in the wake of the vandalism and threats. The church has about 300 members, he said.

Reid, who has been with the sheriff's department since 1979, said the area had never seen anything quite like this.
"We hope it's over," he said. "The protestors have had their say now, so we're hoping it all dies down."

CNN , falling in the ratings , go after Bible believing Christians . No wonder they will soon go off he air with NO viewers . It is impossible for sodomites to reproduce and thus show how unnatural and wrong that behavior and sin is. That was the point of the pastor . Remember unless you and I and everyone repents toward God and places our faith and trust toward The LORD Jesus Christ ( Acts 20:21 )KJB, only death and hell awakes to claim the soul for eternity. The LORD Jesus is God incarnate and He paid the price of our sins but we MUST repent toward God and place our faith and trust toward The LORD Jesus Christ , if we and to have everlasting abundant love , joy and life.

Well I for one will take my chances on NOT having to explain to the Creator of the Universe that I thought the following was somehow his word.

Leviticus 25:44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Exodus 21:20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.

Genesis 19:33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.

Deuteronomy 22:28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and r@pes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

Genesis 19:8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

1 Timothy 2:11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.

34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

Matthew 19: (Jesus Speaking) 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for $ ex ual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

1 Corinthians 7:10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

Numbers 31: (Moses Speaking) 15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the LORD in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the LORD’s people. 17 Now ki11 all the boys. And ki11 every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

2 Kings 6:27 The king replied, “If the LORD does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?” 28 Then he asked her, “What’s the matter?”

She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him today, and tomorrow we’ll eat my son.’ 29 So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him,’ but she had hidden him.”

FORGIVE ME CHRISTIANS IF I'VE TAKEN SOMETHING OUT OF CONTEXT. PLEASE EXPLAIN THE CORRECT CONTEXT AND HOPEFULLY, IF THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDES YOUR EXPLANATION, YOU WILL DRAW SOME SOULS TOWARDS CHRIST. (THIS SHOULD CLEAR OUT THE FORUM)

Tell me something: if you round all gays and lesbians and put them in fenced areas, will that be the end of gays and lesbians? So 40-60 years from now there should be NO MORE gays and lesbians in the US, right? Is that what you and your pastor are saying?

You must be trolling, either that or you are too stupid for words. Where do you think gays come from exactly?

Umm... I think many of these posts are simply pointing out the hypocrisy this "pastor" spews in the name of God and Jesus. There is nothing wrong with tolerance and an open mind. I believe there is a purpose and designer behind the creation of the universe and other universes. But that creator is not obsessed with the ant-like mentalities on this speck of dust we exist on. You seem to think the creator takes sides. Why would a designer of untold dimensions, that we can never understand – take sides? This stake in the ground is man made and obviously – no good has ever come of it. After all – I tolerate you. The Christian thing is to tolerate me as well (and I'm not gay) – how do you like them apples professor?

You really are an ignorant fk aren't you. Gays don't reproduce gays, breeders do. Your "logic" if thats what it can be called is completely flawed. But don't let that stop you from making a complete imbecile of yourself.

patrick u read my mind on posting verses in the bible that god himself wanted for slaves and promiscuous woman and such. of course god is twisted and wants death to gays as well as the above. i keep telling gay people who wants to get married in churches that there is no place for them in gods church nor gods heaven. atleast this pastor is keeping it real and is a true beleiver of god just like westboro baptist and others before him. but good thing there is laws agasint executing a promiscous woman or a gay couple also theres laws agasint slavery to. good thing the makers of this country where masonic and not christian nut jobs like the ones in europe who were still going through the end of the inquisition. thats when church and state where one. ya many people died.

Well Patrick you have a mix of Old Testament and New Testament (which includes the Gospel). It is important to understand that Christ did away with the Old Testament with the exception of the ten commandments which he recited in his own words as the the requirement for eternal life. This is in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is important to note that the new testament is made up of the Gospel & Covenant of Jesus Christ, which is all those things Christ did and said prior to his crucification. The later part of the new testament is the "claimed" writings of his apostles, I say claimed because not all have been verified to this day.

The really important thing to remember is that the Covenant or new law that applies to Jew & Gentile alike is exclusively from the Gospel of Jesus Christ, again all those things Christ did and said before his Crucification. And the really important thing here is that Christ NEVER said anything about hom ose xua1ity and many believe he actually approved of it in the story of the Centurion and his "Servant". This is because pagan Centurions often kept live in male "servants" This servants handled all of the centurions needs, you get the drift. The centurion loved his servant and begged Christ to save his life all along saying in an ashamed way that he is not worthy and is a sinner. Christ answered to him that his faith is strong then anyones in Israel and went forth and save his servant. A very odd thing for a Jew "Christ" to say to a pagan, yet he did say it.

hey WoeIsMe incase u didnt know the jews god is to the christians god just like the mormon god is to the christian god. all distributions of the bible with these plagiarized storys from mesopotamia or in the western world ALL share one thing in common. the same kernel :) sorry bruh but the mormon jesus is the same jesus in the king james version of the bible. same dude just more adventures.

also like to add that if mankind does not kill off gays the way god commands than followers of christ gets a ticket to hell for disobeying. if man does not serve god than god will do it himself. remember Sodom and Gomorrah remember the great flood :) u moderate christian to scared to kill in the name of god will doom us all. lol

      One Christian to another.
I pray the light of God lets itself into your heart, and that his love for all will inspire you to follow.
Truly it is those who remember "love thy neighbor" and "judge not" that are his true example.
Those who are hateful should repent, ask God to show them how to keep the bible in context and how they may learn to love.

I don't mind if people are gay, but I wish they wouldn't leave the toilet unflushed as a way of communicating with other gay men. Many people don't know that when you see an unflushed toilet with a bowel movement in it, it is usually from a gay man who is marking his territory and letting other gay men know that they can be serviced in that bathroom. And that's just one of the disgusting things that gay men do that they want everyone to believe is "normal."

I suspect this "pastor" is still wrangling with those same gender "trysts" he had when he was younger. Spewing such hate and ignorance often stems from a personal encounter that is not to be spoken of ever again. Freedom of speech does not automatically mean that all 'speech' is coherent. No doubt that this pastor was speaking from his gut and not from his brain (If he uses his). The same would apply to those making death threats against him. Most of these Fundy Pastor types give zero time to thinking about what they are going to say on Sunday morning and eventually they will put their foot in their mouth and pay the price for it. @Larry – We've had the ability to accurately and affordably test people's $e xuality in a lab setting since the 1950s. And in all that time, not one person has ever been able to show that their $e xuality changed during the course of their lifetime. Not from gay to straight, not from straight to gay, not even from gay to bi$ exual. Not through theraputic means and not through religious means. Also, there have been tons of studies done on ho mo$ exuality – if it was a choice there would be precursors to that choice leading someone to want to be attracted to the same gender or leading them to actually having attraction for the same gender – yet not one study has ever found any precursor or cause.

Of course I wish I'd known all that before I spent YEARS in celibacy, prayer and work trying to change my $e xual orientation to no avail.

      May 28, 2012 at 2:08 pm |
    • Larry

Your hope is in genetics and finding the DNA strand that causes your plight. Eventually there will be a solution found, although with as little research going on in that area, it may take a long, long time. Too bad that billionaires like Soros waste money on trying to control the masses and furthering their agenda, instead of helping people like you. Very sad.

@Patrick.....Some people are genetically pedisposed to using drugs, however, if they have the will power not to "use", they will never become drug addicts. Think about it.

      @Larry
u have brought up a failed argument. U r comparing a genetic pre-disposition to drugs to be the same as $exual orientation. this is wrong.
Lets turn the tables on u. Assume that in this world, the 'natural' way to reproduce was male on male and female on female. But u Larry, were born to be genetically pre-disposed to like females. Then Patrick comes along and tells u that u should seek help! through prayer, change ur ways and start liking guys. Do u think in ur right mind that u would ever be able to bring urself to sleep with guys. Imagine as a straight guy, u even entertaining the thought of getting into bed with another guy, let alone praying for a change in ur ways. And then Patrick says, 'hey, its the same as overcoming ur genetic disposition to drug addiction!'. that kinda of reasoning by comparing drug addiction to $exual orientation would be absurd! Now u think about that, and next time, put more thought into what u write (i know that's too much to ask for a religiously brainwashed person, but i know u can do it!).

Your failure to present a logical rebuttal does not make a statement "ridiculous". It only makes *you* ridiculous. Any 4-year old can come back with "na-ah".

      May 28, 2012 at 2:09 pm |
    • Robairdo

Not ridiculous at all. The Bible, albeit the old testament, does indeed say that. Luckily the OT only ever applied to the Jew and never to the gentile. The law that applies to Christians is from the Gospel of Jesus Christ and is called the new Covenant.

If all you do is get little one liners from infidels.org, you are going to leave yourself wide open for easy refutation..
      a. the prohibition of work in Exodus 31 applies to the sabbath, which is Saturday, not Sunday.
      b. that punishment applies to the old not the new covenant.

      May 28, 2012 at 2:10 pm |

Even if the original post is inaccurate, I don't see how a. and b. are any better.

Chad it does seem rather odd that many of the Atheists who post here seem to use the same arguments, quotes, proof-texts from the Bible and catch phrases (delusional, fairy tales ect) It makes me wonder if most of the posts here are from the same person. (Yes Christians can be guilty of this too)

      May 28, 2012 at 2:16 pm |
    • Robairdo

Chad & GAW, Christians are indeed ignorning the Covenant of Jesus Christ and many still use OT verses to justify their hate.

@GAW, maybe you are missing my point the OT only every applied to the Jew and was replaced by the new Covenant of Jesus Christ which applies to Jew & Gentile alike. The new Covenant says nothing against hom ose xua1ity.

The Bible says to those who are slaves that if you " can gain your freedom, use it rather" . The Bible reports what others have done , including putting men in slavery. There are two covenants i the Bible, The first and the second. The first covenant was to a chosen nation and people that God used to reveal Himself to the world through . The second or NEW Testament fulfills the 333 prophecies about the Messiah and what and Who He is and what His plans for the future are. The fulfillment of prophecy alone should at least spark interest in the truth of the Bible. The Old testament reveals God as HOLY , the new Testament God is revealed as LOVE. God is Holy LOVE. He gave the commandments ,613 of them, in the old testament and people could not obey them. This showed they needed a Saviour. God became a man in The person of The LORD Jesus Christ and on the cross suffered the full penalty of all our sins. This would be equal to what it would be like to burn on fire forever. He did this in because of His love for us and so that we would not have to suffer that horrible fate. To obtain the benefits of everlasting life, joy and love, one MUST " repent toward God and place their faith and trust toward The LORD Jesus Christ. ( Acts 20:21 )KJB. I Corinthian 7:21 reveals that God would wish that slaves would be free. More than this is the fact that God wishes also that you would be free from being a slave of sin. carm dot org

Why is it the conservative teabaggers who claim they want less government, who are issuing bans against gay marriage? And why aren't they concerned with topics that Jesus actually spoke about, like divorce and remarriage?

Matthew 19: (Jesus Speaking) 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for $e xual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

1 Corinthians 7:10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

Why aren't they trying to ban remarriage when the divorce was due only to irreconcilable differences??? Why aren't they trying to ban no fault divorce? Could someone from their side please explain how that isn't hypocrisy?

  15. Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things

    Prayer changes things

    May 28, 2012 at 1:57 pm |
    • Patrick

I have no argument about prayer changing things. Prayer works. But the bible is not healthy for children and other living things.

I guess if I had messed up my life I might want some priest to lick my wounds too. What he was saying was taking out of context. He was not saying to literally put them behind a fence and let them die his point was they can't procreate. The bible condemns that way of life. Should hate them, beat on, them call them names, No. It does not agree with that either but in no way could any Christian condone what the bible condemns, that is not logical.

    May 28, 2012 at 1:56 pm |

The bible condemns a lot of things they spew out of their mouths and do. And Gay and lesbians in this day and age can procreate. Seriously, if they can't then how in the hell am I here with a biological lesbian mother? Lol. Though this was back in the 80s when being closet case was popular and people feared coming out. But that's still a point. And obviously straight people should stop making babies since they're the ones making gay children. Another good reason they should love Contraception.

This whole gay hate reminds me of reading about interracial marriages. Same context and reasoning, "If we let them marry we'll soon see people marrying their dogs and the world will end!" Yeah that didn't happen.

Chad: We realize that was his point. It's a stupid point. And you could split men and women of any minority behind separate electric fences and watch them die out due to a lack of reproduction. Ever hear of the Holocaust? Pretty much the same principle that this sicko pastor preached about. GLBT people have straight parents (duh). If you put all GLBT people in concentration camps to die, there would still be GLBT children being born. So yea, stupid point. Furthermore, if your "religion" is pro-Holocaust, you should probably reconsider your spiritual direction in life. The Bible isn't really anti-gay – most of the passages that are used to support hate speech such as Pastor Worley's are grossly misinterpreted. Mainly because the same level of ignorance associated with bigotry prevents people from understanding anything beyond the simplest of concepts.

The pastor is wrong. Gays can and do have children. The fact that the moron said that lesbians and gay men should be fenced off in separate enclosures shows that he knows they can.

I am a Christain and I belive that God created marriage between a man and a woman only. Jesus states to love your neighbor. Jesus does not preach hate, but at the same time he speaks against sin. He has to, he is God. I am not pleased with what this pastor states at all. 99% of Christains would agree that this pastor is wrong with what he states. Hate the sin but love the sinner. We are all sinners and need God;s love.

    • tallulah13

I am an American and I believe that equality and freedom are the foundation upon which this nation was built, and that religion has no bearing upon the legality of same-s.ex marriage. It's nice that you disagree with this pastor, but frankly, all moral, decent human beings SHOULD disagree with this pastor.

There is more evidence that hom.o.se.xuality is natural than there is proof of the existence of any god. The very fact that people are still using mythology to create hatred for a minority is disgusting and evil.

      May 28, 2012 at 2:33 pm |
    • TruthPrevails :-)

Marriage was redefined the minute you could no longer sell your daughter for a sheep and 2 goats. Suck it up, the church does not have the right to say who can or can't get married and given that there is no evidence to back the god delusion, your imaginary friend has no say either. No matter where one gets married they still require a government issued license to do so, so in the end the government defines marriage and they tend to define that as 2 legally consenting people (usually those over the age of 18). Being gay is not a sin, it is the way people are born. Being a christian only shows your laziness to seek out the answers of the 21st century, it does not mean much more.
