Pope's butler arrested over Vatican documents leak

By Barbie Nadeau, for CNN

Rome (CNN) - Pope Benedict's butler has been arrested on suspicion of leaking confidential documents to an Italian journalist, the Vatican said Saturday.

Paolo Gabriele, 46, was arrested Wednesday for illegal possession of confidential documents, found in his apartment in Vatican territory, the Vatican said in a statement issued three days later.

Gabriele, who has worked as the papal butler since 2006, is one of only a handful of people with access to the pontiff's private desk.

His job included handing out rosaries to dignitaries and riding in the front seat of the "Popemobile," a vehicle used for public papal appearances, as seen in many photographs showing Gabriele with the pope.

Last month, the Vatican gave Cardinal Julian Herranz a "pontifical mandate" to uncover the source of hundreds of personal letters and confidential documents that have been released to Gianluigi Nuzzi, an Italian journalist and author of "Sua Santita," a book that translates to "His Holiness" and includes the documents.

    Kindness
    For you.
A thought to consider without an ego response

Accept Jesus christ as your lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from som other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

    Read Ecclesiastes. Read corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

I just wanted to say that I treasure my Catholic upbringing. I love the Church and the beauty and joy it has put into my life. The sense of wonder that fills your heart at Easter Vigil mass is a truly wonderful thing. There are problems in it just like there are problems in every single organization comprised of people. Police shoot and kill innocent people, are all police evil? Teachers abuse children, are all teachers evil? Parents hit their children, are all parents evil?

    Of course not.

We need to focus on working on resolving these issues. The problem is not the Church, is it the men and women of the church who have a fallen nature.

    LIke all of us.

We need to pray for the Church and for all of humanity.

Prayer doesn’t not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

Topher, how come your 'omnipotent' creature couldn't do saving without the loony Christ sacrifice bit? And for that matter, how was it a sacrifice at all, when an omnipotent being could just pop up a replacement son any time it wants with less than a snap of its fingers? Pretty feeble god it is that you've made for yourself there.

      Hi, Bob

"Topher, how come your 'omnipotent' creature couldn't do saving without the loony Christ sacrifice bit?"

There must be the shedding of blood for the forgiveness of sins. Since we've all sinned and since there's nothing you or I could do to make up for our indiscretions, God sent His perfect Son, Jesus Christ, to take the punishment for us. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

"And for that matter, how was it a sacrifice at all, when an omnipotent being could just pop up a replacement son any time it wants with less than a snap of its fingers?"

That's not how it works. But don't worry, I'll try to explain it for you. This is a trinity thing and can be very complicated. First the Father and the Son are not the same as you and your father. The Father did not sleep with a woman and then she bore a child. The Son is God, equal to the Father, but in a different role. The Son has always existed, as have the Father and Holy Spirit.

"Pretty feeble god it is that you've made for yourself there."

What about any of that sounds feeble?

    • Rick James

I have read the Gospels. I was once Christian, just like you are right now. The reason I'm not anymore is just that, reason. Why couldn't God just forgive his creation, since he is omnipotent? Why torture his son? To show people that, if that is how he treats his "son", it'll being a million times worse for everyone else if they don't shape up?

I'll seek forgiveness from those I have wronged. Since God doesn't really exist, why should I see forgiveness from him?

With all due respect, I think you are asking the wrong question. You should be asking why He hasn't treated you that way. You deserve it. Not Jesus. But because He loved you so much Jesus voluntarily went to the cross.

"Since God doesn't really exist, why should I see forgiveness from him?"

How sure are you? 'Cause you better be sure. You're wagering a lot on this conclusion.

What kind of person doesn't see this as the most loving gift anyone can give? He paid your fine so you don't have to. And to answer your question, the Bible says the wages of sin is death. You've broken His laws and so you must pay the penalty. That's Hell. If you don't have the forgiveness of sins found only in Jesus Christ, what will you say to God on Judgment Day?

"Oh I get it. I deserve it because some rib women ate an apple because some talking snake tricked her and now everyone else is cursed. Hilarious if it weren't so submissive."

See above questions. Cause if you have, then your punishment is your fault. Not Adam's.

You ask some good questions, but I'm not sure what you mean about what comes out of the Middle East today. Which things are you talking about. I just want to make sure we're on the same page so I can comment.

"Jesus died for my sins?... so why bother not committing them"

Because of the punishment He took. What He did was so wonderful, I have no interest in doing anything against Him. That's what we Christians mean by "born again." We have new desires. We no longer want to commit sin against God. We seek only to serve him. Paul writes in Romans 6 ... "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?"

So if I told a little white lie as a child, or looked at a hot girl with lust, he will torture me in a flaming pit for all of eternity. That is certainly justice and mercy. And I curious what evidence you looked at that led you to Christ. I'll be waiting.

      Rick

"So if I told a little white lie as a child, or looked at a hot girl with lust, he will torture me in a flaming pit for all of eternity. That is certainly justice and mercy."

It certainly is just. You broke the law. The mercy part is where despite your sinfulness against Him, He provided a way. Do you expect a perfect being with a perfect residence to let anything imperfect into it? That, by its very definition, would make it imperfect.

"And I curious what evidence you looked at that led you to Christ. I'll be waiting."

Well, depends on what kind of evidence you'd like to talk about. Like there's nothing untrue in the Bible. All the histories are accurate. Jesus fulfilled something like more than 100 prophecies from the OT. The fact around 40 authors wrote 66 books and none of them messed up the story. There's witnesses. The list goes on and on.

      May 28, 2012 at 1:02 pm |
    • Rick James

The Bible can't be used as evidence for the Bible. That's circular reasoning and a sign that you have no actual proof.

And for the Heaven part, if no one is perfect, who gets into Heaven?

      May 28, 2012 at 3:18 pm |
    • Topher

"And for the Heaven part, if no one is perfect, who gets into Heaven?"

I'm glad you asked. There is no one who is perfect. We have all sinned and thus deserve Hell. We've lied, stolen, looked with lust. The Bible says there is none who are good. "No, not one." But God, because He loved us despite our wickedness, provided a way for us to get to Heaven. He sent His Son to live a perfect, sinless life and to be our "ransom". To receive this gift of love, what we have to do is repent of our sins (not just say we are sorry, but to turn from sinning) and trust in Jesus Christ to be what He claimed to be. And if we do that, we'll get to go to Heaven. If you don't accept the forgiveness for your sins found only in Christ, you'll be required to pay the punishment for those sins, which is Hell.

I agree. They condone the widespread and mass abuse of little boys by their priests yet an adult loving another adult is somehow wrong if the two adults happen to be the same gender. I just shake my head. I'm so glad my parents raised me to think for myself. Imagine being indoctrinated by sheer blather your whole growing years? Gawd. So glad I'm not Catholic. How embarrassing to be associated with such filth.

I find this story extremely entertaining:-D I couldn't agree more Bo, why should the church hide anything? Lies and deceit, to keep power and money. Unbelievable. What they do is so bad, they hide it from everyone, the church, it's believers, this is hypocrisy at the highest level. I'd like a copy of the book that was published, that's for sure.

Has anyone read any of the allegations which Nuzzi has reported? I haven't, but what (tongue in cheek) does the Vatican have to hide that is so secret, are they building some kind of supper bomb? Everybody knows that there is a lot of corruption in the Vatican, the Pope just don't want it confirmed.
So what will they do to the offender, Paolo Gabriel, (if found guilty) excommunicate him?

I guess you could consider the mind virus known as religion, in all its viral strains such as Christianity and Islam, to be a biological weapon of a sort.
