Vatican reprimand sends American nun's book up bestseller lists

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com

(CNN) – Authors are known to seek out glowing blurbs to help sell books, but they might consider courting a Vatican reprimand instead.

After the Vatican’s doctrinal watchdog condemned an American nun for a book she wrote on human sexuality this week, the book shot up Amazon.com’s bestseller list, becoming the #1 best selling religious studies book by Tuesday.

On Wednesday , Sister Margaret A. Farley's "Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics," was the #16 best-selling book on Amazon overall, just ahead of Laura Hillenbrand’s “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption,” which has been on Amazon's bestseller list for well over a year.

Farley's book has been on the list for three days. The Washington Post reported that the book was #142,982 on Amazon as recently as Monday.

That was the day the Vatican revealed its censure of Sister Margaret A. Farley, who teaches at Yale Divinity School, over her 2006 book, which the church said is out of step with official church teaching on human sexuality, including masturbation and homosexuality.

“Masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action,” the church said in a statement Monday that went on to characterize “homosexual acts” as “acts of grave depravity.”

The reprimand warned church officials not to use Farley’s book, raising eyebrows in Catholic circles because she is one of the country’s most respected female Catholic theologians.

In a statement, Farley defended her work, saying it was not meant as an official church teaching.

Farley said she feared the Vatican “misrepresents (perhaps unwittingly) the aims of my work and the nature of it as a proposal that might be in service of, not against, the church and its faithful people.”

Her censure came days after the leadership that represents most American nuns concluded a meeting in Washington to devise a response to an April Vatican assessment that accused the nuns of promoting “radical feminism.”

Taken together, the Vatican critiques signal an attempt to reign in America’s nuns, a community that the Holy See believes has drifted away from church teaching.

“The Vatican believes that there is a climate of dissent in some quarters of the women’s religious life in America,” said John Allen, CNN’s Vatican analyst. “They are trying to deal with that, and both these developments speak to that.”

The Catholic church will always be with us, as Jesus promised. HOWEVER, He would be appalled at the controlling heirarchy of this century....trying to tell us what to do or not to do, what to believe, etc. Jesus said "love one another as I have loved you." This includes gays, all races, divorced people, those who use birth control, etc. ALL humanity! The nuns have every right....and duty.....to speak their intelligent minds on various topics! Thank you, dear Sisters, for doing just that! And where do the men in the church want to keep the women except in "the back of the convent/bus" disgusting! And I am a cradle Catholic and will go to my grave as Catholic. Religion is a personal relationship with the Creator, not a cult led by out of touch men!

You are confused as to what love is. If one is about to jump off a bridge because he wants to do it do you love him by saying "if it feels good, go ahead, do it"? He is harming himself and your answer for him is just to placate him so he won't be mad at you or offended by you. Are you loving him? Definitely not. Hom sx is against the laws of nature and those who engage in it are hurting themselves. To tell them so is to love them as Jesus loved.

That hmsx behavior happens in animals in no proof that it is unnatural. If you knew anything about Christianity you would know that all of creation was corrupted by the fall. Why don't these nuns leave the RCC? Why continue to belong to an organization that continuously tries to suppress them? Is this similar to espousal abuse syndrome where an abused wife still clings to her abuser? I don't really understand these nuns. Are there other ways to serve God that do not involve the RCC and the pope?

One point they must consider deeply is that Catholics believe in resolution within community. That's why divorce is shunned. Anybody can leave and start over. It takes courage, commitment, forgiveness and acceptance to work through. These traits are best exemplified by Catholic religious. If they leave, they will demonstrate some veracity to the Vatican's pronouncement

Just look at the history of the RCC and see that it has always been rife with politcal intrigue and corruption. Not to mention persecution, i.e. the Spanish Inquisition, and the forced conversion of the native peoples of North and South America. I could also mention the attempts to hide the accusations of child abuse and pedophilia by the clergy. But here we are picking on the poor Catholic Church according to some posts. Pathetic.

She could have written a book about torturing animals, but as long as the story could be framed in terms of the big mean repressive Vatican criticizing a poor helpless oppressed woman, idiots around the world would still be flocking to her banner for no other reason than that it allows them to bash the Catholic Church a little bit more. Most people defending her now probably aren't even intelligent enough to understand the big words she uses in the book, but they "know" she must be right since the mean and scary Vatican has dared to criticize her positions (the horror!).

I tend to agree. Ms. Farley probably thinks she wrote a serious academic work on ethics, not something for rabble rousers who want to bash the Vatican. I intend to read the book myself, but not because I have axes to grind one way or the other.

The more the church tries to suppress women's rights, the stronger women get. If the church is trying to alienate followers, it is doing a good job of it. Contrary to Catholic doctrine, the pope is not infallible. No human is infallible. He was elected by men, not appointed by God. The ten commandments don't change with the times, but archaic customs like denying dignity, equal respect and human rights to women need to change. Unlike the commandments, they are not carved in stone.

    June 6, 2012 at 3:46 pm |

The doctrine of papal infallibility is very limited and also opposed by many thoughtful Catholics. Maybe you should learn a little more about such things before you start attacking straw dogs that you yourself made up.

      June 6, 2012 at 3:52 pm |
    • Abbeystone

By the way, Bern, the Church is in fact too obtuse when it comes to women and their role in this world, but that has nothing to do with infallible papal pronouncements. You need to do a little more research and reading.

FYI...I'm not and never was a catholic. Was raised a Baptist, but now have nothing to do with religion. When I was stationed at NAS Memphis (Naval Air Station) the First Baptist Church in Memphis encouraged both Navy and Marines to visit their church. Sooo...a few of us did. We were also invited to attend their Senior (as in High School) Fellowship that evening. So we did. They were looking for a way to make some money for a Retreat. Several suggestions were shot down immediately and that was followed by silence. So...I had 2 suggestions. The first was a paper drive but that was shot down because they didn't make enough money, which was less than half of what we got in Massachusetts. So, not knowing that Southern Baptists were quite a bit different from those of us up north, I suggested a Record Hop!

Have you ever had a room go completely silent and notice that those sitting on either side of you moved away? One of the adults had to explain to me that Baptists don't dance because that's what the Devil does. I didn't understand! That all happened back in '63 or early '64. Last year 1 of my sisters informed me that my grand parents on my fathers side were opposed to us having record hops. But 2 years later had to admit they were wrong since they noticed that both the junior and senior fellowships had doubled and then tripled and that the record hops were the only difference in those 2 years.

The Catholic Church isn't alone in their stupid beliefs and the way they treat people. Some of the Baptists are that way too. Especially the Southern ones.

On the Plus side, that experience in Memphis started me thinking a lot about religion and religious people for about 30 years. As a result of all that, I ended up ditching religion and no longer believe, right or wrong, that there is a god. Also, I accept the fact that there are both Good and Bad/Evil people everywhere.

Must? Please let us know how you come to possess such wisdom and foresight, or are you just finishing off your 12-pack? The Church is not in danger of going extinct just because a few people on a CNN forum got worked up. 25% of the US population is nominally Cathkic, and even though a lot of them don't practice the doctrines the Vatican would prefer, they're not going to be walking away anytime soon.

you just agreed with me, nobody follows the vatican anymore. i didn't say people were going to quit being catholic, but people seem to prefer whatever version of catholic best suits them, which isn't the vatican version.

lets see, what do you call a church pulling back its stance/doctrines on earth being flat, being center of the universe, joan of arc being a witch, Galileo, mary magdalene, etc, etc.. it is a reform to survive. It knows that unless they accept the actual truth, their farce of man in sky will not go with people all the time.

It is a fact that some people can be fooled some times. But not all people can be fooled all the time. Church knows it. so it reformed itself to survive the times. So It is perfectly true to say that church from time to time MUST reform if it wants to survive. You would have realized it if you had pulled yourself out of the darkened corner of your church to look at reality from time to time

      @Nilkinggary

The RCC is currently facing a protracted extinction, it has been hemorrhaging members for years. The age of the average nun is around 70, and their are fewer and fewer priest entering seminary every year.

Top Ten Signs You're a Christian in Name Only
10 – You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.
9 – You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.
8 – You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.
7 – Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Al lah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees!
6 – You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.
5 – You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.
4 – You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs – though excluding those in all rival sects – will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."
3 – While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some id iot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity.
2 – You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.
1 – You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history – but still call yourself a Christian.
