Judge orders Catholic cleric to remain in jail for now

By Sarah Hoye, CNN

Philadelphia (CNN) - The highest-ranking Catholic church cleric charged and convicted in the landmark child sexual abuse trial will remain in jail for the time being, a Philadelphia judge ordered Tuesday.

Monsignor William Lynn was found guilty Friday of one count of child endangerment, the first time a U.S. church leader has been convicted of such a charge.

The trial marked the first time U.S. prosecutors have charged not just the priests who allegedly committed abuses but church leaders for failing to stop them. Lynn is the highest-ranking cleric accused of imperiling children by helping cover up sexual abuse.

He was found not guilty on a second count of endangerment and on a charge of conspiring to protect a priest accused of abuse.

Lynn's defense team argued during the trial that their client repeatedly told higher-ups about the alleged abuse and, under strict orders from the late Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, had no authority to remove priests from the ministry.

    @ Topher,

"Even atheists believe Jesus actually existed..."

No, AN atheist said that HE thinks that a person by the name of Jesus might have existed. That is NOT saying that all atheists say that a person named Jesus existed and was crucified in 38 C.E.

      Sayin,

Your ability to broadbrush in one fail swoop is amazing. How is it that you are so easily able to point the finger of guilt at all when 98% of the priests have not committed these crimes. Do you still pay your taxes? Well a greater percentage of police, teachers, fireman, etc. have committed these crimes than Catholic priests. I condemn the actions of the 2% but why should I cast aspersions as you do on the other 98%? Why should I abandon them because bigots like you say I should?

      @Gerald
      1. In 1962, The Vatican relased the 'Crimen Sollicitationis', which outlined how the church is to handle accusations of se.xual impropriety against clergy.
The stickiest point for most people is that not only was the doc.ument itself Top Secret for decades, it explictly stated that anybody involved in this type of investigation, including the accuser and potential witnesses, are sworn to secrecy regarding any and all details, upon penalty of excommunication (a fate worse than death for the devout).
This preoccupation with secrecy significantly slowed the investigative process – the backlog of referrals to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for action against se.xually abusive priests is so large that it takes 18 months to get a reply.
According to the John Jay report, 918 of 1872 (49%) substantiated allegations of abuse against Catholic clergy were addressed by sending the priest off for psychiatric counseling and then moving him to another parish, with nary a whisper to law enforcement. This number does not include priests relocated for reasons other than charges of se.xual impropriety.
The Irish Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse from 2009 came to the conclusion that ""the Dublin Archdiocese's pre-occupations in dealing with cases of child se.xual abuse, at least until the mid 1990s, were the maintenance of secrecy, the avoidance of scandal, the protection of the reputation of the Church, and the preservation of its as.sets. All other considerations, including the welfare of children and justice for victims, were subordinated to these priorities."

"Well a greater percentage of police, teachers, fireman, etc. have committed these crimes than Catholic priests"

The difference is, that when police, fireman or teachers commit these acts they are held accountable. Priests are hidden, moved, coddled and protected by the catholic church.

The entire organization is complicit in protecting and ensuring that these monsters continued to have access to children even though they knew with absolute certainty that they had assaulted children, and would likely do it again.

They should all be tossed in jail for all eternity, all the way up to Pope Adolf.

derp, you say they are held accountable yet there have been 38million cases of abuse in this country, yet I can safely say that less than 100,000 abusers are in jail based on the fact that the prison population for all crimes is around 2 million. The reality is that no, perpetrators generally are not punished.

    • derp

"The reality is that no, perpetrators generally are not punished'

So using your logic, you should easily be able to point out countless examples of police departments, fire departments, and school districts that took known child molesters and moved them into positions where they were able to again molest children with impunity, while simultaneously obstructing investigations, and forcing silence on it's membership.

Because using your logic, it would be obvious that JUST LIKE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, police departments, fire departments and school systems would rather protect their child molesting members than turn them over for prosecution.

You can flail away as much as you like.

The simple truth of the matter is that you will not find anywhere anything nearly as an egregious case of systematic child abuse, cover up, facilitation, denial, and abuse of power in any organization anywhere in modern history.

The reason you cannot find a comparable example is because one does not exist.

Congratulations, at least you get to be the best at something.

      drip,
The evidence everyone suggests that proves that all the bishops were moving peds around is that they moved them. Yet the reality is that ALL priests are moved around frequently. We have this one case in which it was proven that a priest sheltered peds and he is being punished. NO OTHER CASES HAVE BEEN PROVEN and I will wait until there are more. I am in favor of every one of them ending up in jail. But I am not as irrational as you at wanting everyone punished for the crimes of what at least at this point is proven only to be a small percentage.

      I have one.

Why does the baby Jesus let degenerate old men bugger little boys in his name.

Why dosen't he kill the abusers?

      Lets see either

He can't (So he is not God)
      Or
He is unaware of it (So he is not omnipotent)
      Or
He wont (Which means he supports the buggering and is unworthy of worship)
      Or
      He dosen't exist.

Please explain which is true and why!

Here's a fun one. Why do you still call him Jesus? According to many branches of Christianity, Jesus IS "God". Jesus was just his physical embodiment while he was on Earth. Now that he's died adn returned to heaven, wouldn't he just go back to being "God"? Does "God" keep a seperate part of himself walking around heaven and call it Jesus? Does "God" talk to himself?

      'Cause that's His name.

"Jesus was just his physical embodiment while he was on Earth. Now that he's died adn returned to heaven, wouldn't he just go back to being "God"?"

What you've got here is a trinity question, I think. First, Jesus is still "physical." He rose bodily from the grave and ascended to Heaven that way. This is one area where Christianity is unique. He is the only one worshipped that is still alive. Now, Jesus is still God. But He's also only one part of the Trinity.

So your position is that "God" maintains himself as three seperate beings?

      BRC

I admit this is a difficult one to explain, so I'd suggest you not use me as your final source on the subject. The Trinity says there's 3 persons making up one God. (Note: It's not 3 Gods, just one.)

      June 27, 2012 at 11:31 am |
    • BRC

      @topher,
Have no fear, I don't use you as the final source, I've referenced many, and they all fall short. The simple fact is this, the Bible claims that "God" made the universe, which means he made the physical laws that govern it, and those imutable laws say that one is one, three is three, three is not and cannot be one. That simlpe. An omnipotent being could break those rules of course, by why would they? If they designed the universe to work that way, wouldn't it be because that was teh way things SHOULD work?

And that's just the issue with the general principle, the specifics of the Christian example add even more. "God" is omnicient, but he uses the holy spirit to act? Jesus has always been the son of god, but he didn't come along until millions (thousands if you refuse to recognise science) of years after "God", and for some reason wasn't revealed to "God's" chosen people for over a thuosand years?

These are questions that don't make sense if "God" is omnicsient and omnipotent. They make perfect sense if the Bible is a fabrication designed by humans; so why would anyone trust the Bible's description of the Trinity or "God"?

Yes, Jesus has always existed. But was prophesied throughout the OT. In fact, it was as early as Genesis 3:15. Take the following passage for example ...

"Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." Isaiah 53.

This passage was written 600-700 years before Christ came. Pretty cool, huh?

      June 27, 2012 at 12:08 pm |
    • Honey Badger Dont Care

      NO, NO, NO!

NOTHING was “prophesized” in the OT. The writers of the NT knew more about the OT than you or anyone alive right now does. They used the OT as the basis of the fable that they wrote about in the NT. What don’t you get about this? “Prophesy” is proof of NOTHING but the fact that the authors of the NT knew what was in the OT. Don’t read too much into it.

If the holy spirit is "God" why not just call it "God"? Why consider it a seperate piece instead of a part of the same whole.

And no, that passage you referenced doesn't really impress me, for two reasons. One, it was written hundreds of years before the NT was written, it's not exactly hard to write the second book so it lines up with teh first.

Second, there's nothing that actually lines up what you said with Jesus. Did you know that Jesus wasn't the first person the bible claims was born to a virgin?

You're asking for an awful lot to go right here if it was just all a lie and they made it all up. You've got several people writing the story and from different parts of the world and it all lines up perfectly. It's not like a Hollywood writers' meeting was going on here. You've also got writers not being very nice to other writers and I'm sure if these things were not true, egos would have proved that out.

"Second, there's nothing that actually lines up what you said with Jesus. Did you know that Jesus wasn't the first person the bible claims was born to a virgin?"

How does that quote from Isaiah not line up with Jesus? Keep reading it ...

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."

I know that is kinda long, but well worth the read.

Even atheists believe Jesus actually existed (I'm not even talking about whether He was God or not.) Bart Ehrman said this:

"The really compelling evidence, though, comes in the Christian sources. Mythicists write these sources off because they are Christian and therefore biased, but that is not a historically solid way to proceed. Christian sources do indeed have to be treated gingerly, but they are sources every bit as much as pagan and Jewish sources are. What I show in Did Jesus Exist? is that there are so many Christian sources that can be used by historians that there is really no doubt at all that Jesus at least existed. Just to give an example (so as not to repeat my entire book here): by any credible dating, the apostle Paul must have converted to believe in Jesus within two or three years of the traditional date of Jesus’ death. And Paul knew some facts about Jesus’ life; he knew some of his teachings; he knew his closest disciple Peter; and he knew his brother James. Personally! If Jesus didn’t exist, you would think that his brother would know about it. The historian can not simply ignore what Paul has to say since he was a Christian. Taking his biases into account, we can use his letters for information about Jesus. And among other things, they show beyond a doubt that Jesus existed as a Jewish teacher in Palestine in the 20s CE. Otherwise we cannot explain Paul or his letters. That’s just one important piece of evidence for the existence of Jesus."

Ehrman, a former Christian, is now an agnostic. And even he admits we know Jesus existed.

      @Topher,
Sorry, but I read it, and that still doesn't scream Jesus.
      1) Half of it is in the past tense. As you were so keen to point out, Jesus wouldn't come around for another 500 years.
      2) You can shoe horn (maybe) Jesus's death into that "proverb", but it doesn't in the least match his life. That's a problem for a profecy.
      3) Saying soemone will suffer and die because he lives with the least of a society, even though he is actually a good person, is hardly specific are hard to imagine, happens all the time now.

If it was true divine prophecy, why wouldn't it have been more specific (according to yuo Jesus existed in heaven when the prophecy was given, so why not call him out by name?)

Also, you never answered my question. Were you aware the Jesus is not the only (or even the first) child of virgin birth mentioned in the bible?

    • BRC

      Topher,
It wasn't a reference to Jesus, in the same book the person was actually born and did serve their purpose. I don't think it was Emmanuel.

Amazing that Emmanuel means the same thing that was on nasi belt buckles huh?

This is the only thing I'm finding. Isaaiah 7:14 ..."Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."

This is indeed a reference to the Messiah.

"Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." Matthew 1:22-23.

      @topher,
That's all I'm seeing for now as well, but if you read teh chapters before and after, that doesn't look like it's about Jesus either, it's talking about a savior then (well technically a savior AND a condemner, but why split hairs), to smite the unfaithful jews, let the phylistines and syrians win for a while, and then finally join the two kings under one. It's not talking about hundreds of years later, it's talking about right then.

      June 27, 2012 at 3:03 pm |
    • Topher

Yeah, to the best of my knowledge, there's only one virgin birth in the Bible — that of Jesus.

      just for kick the
The Holy Spirit or Akem Manah which mean The Holy Spirit is from the Zoroastrian its there ti.tle of the Messiah so the idea that god is Akem Manah was primarily used to convert the Zoroastrians as well as Gaians who used the same ti.tle by saying its your messiah to after all when you a budding new religion who wants to kill the largest religion Paganism its better to gain as many converts form the other 2 largest religions at the time Zoroastrianism and Gaiaism once the three primary religions laid defeated the the barbarians Celts or druidism would stand no chance letter they discovered others when attacking the other (i say others because Christianity is an Asian religion Asian) religions only to be defeated by Shinto,... they didn't stand for you teaching on hate of the family

    For you

A thought to consider without any ego response

Accept Jesus christ as your lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from som other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

    Read Ecclesiastes. Read corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

    my testimony

    Romans 10:9

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

you accept jesus as your lord and saviour but what do you accept from GOD THE FATHER, this is who the Saviour is because HE sent HIS Angel to save the world from the evil which is upon it. Now ask yourself whom is GOD THE HOLYSPIRIT!

Honestly, the most damning outcome of this would be that, after all the defense's assertions of how ridiculous it is to think he would flee, they give him house arrest and he flees to the Vatican, which harbors him.

There was a priest in California recently who ran away after being charged. He went straight to the Vatican and they took him in with no problem, if I remember correctly. It's not a new tactic for them I would guess.
