My Take: How evangelicals could grow to love Muslims

Editor's Note: Eboo Patel is founder and president of Interfaith Youth Core. His new book is called "Sacred Ground: Pluralism, Prejudice and the Promise of America."

By Eboo Patel, Special to CNN

Paul Ryan has set off joyous cheers in the land of conservatives largely because of his fiscal views but also because of his Catholic faith.

He is just the most recent member of his church – think House Speaker John Boehner, Republican runner-ups Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, and Supreme Court justices Samuel Alito and Antonin Scalia – to be viewed as a flag-bearer for the conservative cause, a movement whose foot soldiers are largely evangelical Protestants.

The dynamic of evangelicals cheering for Catholics is one of the most stunning shifts in American political history. Just 50 years ago, evangelicals were ringing the alarm about the rising prominence of Catholics in American politics, not falling in line behind them.

“Our freedom, our religious freedom, is at stake if we elect a member of the Roman Catholic order as president of the United States,” Norman Vincent Peale told a conference of evangelical leaders in September 1960.

Materials handed out at the Peale conference claimed ‘Universal Roman Catholicism’ was both a religion and a political force whose doctrines were ultimately incompatible with the American ideals of freedom, equality and democracy.

And the conference's keynote address alleged that Catholics practiced “mental reservation,” which allowed them to lie about their intentions in order to gain power. And when they succeeded, they would make second-class citizens of everyone else.

Replace “Roman Catholic” with “Muslim” and “Church hierarchy” with “caliphate” in those pronouncements and today we are witnessing a similar energy directed against a different faith community using largely the same categories.

In today’s parlance, Kennedy was part of a stealth jihad meant to replace the U.S. Constitution with sharia law and practicing taqqiyya to mask this dawa offensive.

As they believed about Catholicism then, many evangelicals now view the very nature of Islam as incompatible with American values. Evangelicals rate Muslims lower on a "‘favoribility" scale than any other religious group, according to "American Grace," a book by scholars Robert Putnam and David Campbell.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Evangelical churches are favorite venues for Islamophobic speakers and prominent evangelical leaders like Franklin Graham regularly call Islam a threat to America.

It is easy to draw a straight line between the evangelical anti-Catholic prejudice of previous generations and the Islamophobia of today, essentially saying that “evangelicals have to hate someone.”

But that’s too cynical a take for me. The more interesting - and certainly more hopeful - storyline is the one about change.

Evangelical attitudes changed markedly towards Catholics in the past generation, and they are changing towards Muslims now.

Without doubt, the evangelical shift on Catholics can be partially explained by the two religion traditions finding common cause on political issues like abortion. But in "American Grace," Putnam and Campbell point to what they believe is a more important reason.

Over the course of the past fifty years, more evangelicals got to meet Catholics and the warmth in those personal relationships became generalized towards the larger community. If your Pal Al is Catholic and a good guy, then by extension Catholics as a group and Catholicism as a religion have some good qualities.

This is precisely the dynamic taking place between evangelicals and Muslims, a story for me best illustrated by a Dallas-based pastor named Bob Roberts. Bob grew up in the 1960s in East Texas and remembers the Pope regularly being referred to as “the Great Whore of Babylon” in his father’s Southern Baptist church.

He absorbed the anti-Catholic prejudice along with everyone else. But when he went on service trips to Southeast Asia as an adult, he discovered that the people doing the most intense, committed development work were inevitably Catholic. At first he admired them from afar. Then he got to know some up close, and they turned out to be not so bad.

After September 11, 2001, the anti-Muslim feeling was open and intense in Bob’s community. Truth be told, Bob felt it himself.

But he was self-aware enough to recognize the similarity between the irrational prejudice he absorbed about Catholics growing up and what he saw happening toward Muslims now.

So he did the same thing with Muslims that he’d done with Catholics: get to know them personally through common projects. Bob has traveled everywhere from Afghanistan to Gaza to do interfaith service projects with Muslims.

And now he is bringing fellow evangelicals along and involving the members of his Dallas mega-church in local interfaith projects. He’s speaking to young evangelical leaders about the importance of building relationships with Muslims as a Christian practice.

I know because in the midst of the opposition to the so-called Ground Zero mosque a couple years ago, a young pastor came to my office and asked me to guest preach about Islam at his evangelical church. He told me that Bob had sent him.

This is how communities change. Evangelicals make up 40% of America – when they change, America changes.

Maybe in 50 years, there will be no surprise when the loudest cheerleaders for Muslim presidential candidates and Supreme Court justices are evangelical Christians.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Eboo Patel.

    To Gary,

You said, I will accept Muslims and Islamists only when they open their countries under Sharia to other religious faiths like Christianity and Judism and allow us to co-exist in peace.

So you are no better than those you despise? What then gives you any right to claim you are better than they are?

As long as Islam teaches, and Muslims practice a doctrine which condems all non-believers to death, you will remain a faith based on non tollerance and terrorism.

Is that what Islam teaches? Have you sat in many mosques and been taught what Islam teaches?

Islam has not raised itself above the select few who wich to enslave their believers and will not tollerate thoughts beyond their ability to control the faithful.

You are equating a cultural phenomenon that incorporates and corrupts a religion to the actual religion as it is lived and practiced by many. Much as slavery was practiced and condoned by a corrupted form of Christianity that ruled the United States for a time.

In short, the religious leaders of the Muslim faith rule by fear and hatred, while Christianity is based on love and tollerance of those that do not share their beliefs. A concept Islam has never understood or will tollerate.

Perhaps you are in need of a history lesson. Christianity has "converted" millions at the point of a sword. They burned non-believers or "heretics" at the stake. Before one holds up a standard for tolerance, one might want to wash the blood stains out of the fabric.

It's true that many Muslims are good, kind people; I know many of them. But you can't deny that Islam is alone among all of the worlds religions in that it has been taken over by extremists who are bloodthirsty tyrants; these are not just a few people who are this way, it is a big part of muslim culture. We have seen over and over and over and over again how intolerant and cruel muslim societies are to anyone who believes differently than they do.
Good muslims need to regain control of their religion. And until they do, Islam will remain the worlds most dispised religion.

They may be good and kind but they are still delusional, just like xtians for believing in things that have no basis in reality.

      @kls817,

You are incorrect on several points. For one, Islam is NOT alone in this regard. One need only look at the history of Christianity and Judaism for proof of that. Any time extremists are allowed control of a religious body it can and will lead to bloodshed.

Secondly, you once again conflate the religion with the culture. The culture in countries where extremists have infiltrated not only the religion, but also the government and married to two together, is bloodthirsty and cruel, lost in strict adherence not to the religion as it is believed by the majority of the people who follow it, but by some twisted interpretation that suits their need to govern through fear.

<i?We have seen over and over and over and over again how intolerant and cruel muslim societies are to anyone who believes differently than they do.

Does that give us license to in turn be intolerant and cruel to any who believe differently than we do?

Good muslims need to regain control of their religion. And until they do, Islam will remain the worlds most dispised religion.

The same could be said of Christianity. And is. Often.

In the meantime, pardon me if I, as a practicing Pagan, choose to follow a direction Jesus gave his followers, to love my neighbors as I do myself.

      @honeybadger,

They may be good and kind but they are still delusional, just like xtians for believing in things that have no basis in reality.

Is it up to you to decide that? You believe as you do based on your life's experience, on the things you've seen or not seen, the things you've done. I've had a different experience and therefore believe differently. Perhaps what I believe is a delusion. Perhaps what you believe is a delusion.

As long as we can communicate and serve the common good, does it matter all that much?

As a follow on to my own experiences of being a non-Muslim, Ambassador of Goodwill on Eid and giving holiday wishes and simple gifts to Muslims you may happen to know are your neighbors, shop keepers, co-workers or clients but not know well beyond those brief encounters I would like to add to some of the far less tollerant people complaining about CNN or the US Government is shoving Islam down your throats by trying to highlight all the positive aspects of it.

There is a reality we all must now face as citizens not of the United States, or England, Saudia Arabia or Iran...and that is our corporations have all gone global, the Internet has wired us all together and rapid forms of travel have virtually eliminated distances and borders.

We can either all learn to get along together in the one world global government that's eventually coming as our nations all go bankrupt and become bigger and bigger unions like the European Union all joined together, or we can all kill each other over our differences first.

Either way the borders are falling, the wold is coming together and eventually it's going to be a peaceful world. How violent a process you want that to be, and whether you want to live to see it or die in the process, is going to depend on how willing YOU are to learn to accept people of other cultures not by converting to their religions or lifestyles but by simply understanding and respecting people of different cultures.

The choice is simple...and it always takes two to tango...the responsibility to forge this peace rests on each and everyone of our own shoulders, you can embrace tolerance, respect and understanding, peace and live...or you can embrace intollerance, hatred and disrespect and die.

As someone who loves everyone and wants to see everyone on this planet who calls themselves a human being and the earth their home live happy, peaceful and prosperous lives, I appeal to any and all of you who aren't ready to live in this new evolving world to reconsider the simple truth that we can all be part of the solution or we can all be part of the problem.

Too many people have already died because of stereotypes, intollerance, willful ignorance, and deliberate misunderstandings of other cultures and peoples.

Let's all do our part and try to stop that, reach out to who or what you fear, embrace it and offer it your friendship and respect and you just might be surprised the happy responses you get in return.

You are aware that open practice of Christianity or any non-Islamic faith is illegal is Saudi Arabia? Not that anybody cares, 'tolerance' if very much a one way street.

"You are aware that open practice of Christianity or any non-Islamic faith is illegal is Saudi Arabia? "

At the same time Iran has Iraq have practicing Jewish communities. With a good count of Synagogues in Tehran alone. Sad when Iran and Iraq are the prime examples of hoe to get along. There is always be pockets around the world that do not wish to get along but are we to judge all of Islam on Saudi Arabia or look to places where co-existance is surprisingly working.

Why should we allow what is legal or illegal in Saudi Arabia have any bearing on our treatment of our fellow citizens? Does the Muslim family living a few doors down, who were all born here in the US, whose parents were born here in the US, who pay their taxes and support their community, who give to the local food bank and chaperon activities at the school, are they somehow less deserving of equal rights, of your neighborly love?

Ok Eboo time to address yet another story of Islamic terror and horror.

"An 11-year-old Christian girl has been arrested and detained on charges of blasphemy for allegedly desecrating pages from the Quran in the Pakistan capital Islamabad.

Local media reports said the girl has Down syndrome. CNN was unable to confirm these reports, however Qasim Niazi, the police officer in charge of the police station near where the incident took place, said the girl did not have a mental disorder but was illiterate and had not attended school.

The accused girl had told him she had no idea there were pages of the Quran inside the docu-ments she burnt, he added.

Niazi said that 150 people had gathered on Friday where the neighborhood's Christian population lived and threatened to burn down their houses."

"The mob wanted to burn the girl to give her a lesson," he told CNN.

And CNN if Eboo Patel does not vehemently condemn this situation admitting that the koran has no magic and is simply a book written by humans for humans, he should be banned from further commentary on any CNN web pages.

What instigated the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon?

And what drives today's global 24/7 mosque/imam-planned acts of terror and horror?

The koran, Mohammed's book of death for all infidels and Muslim domination of the world by any means.

Muslims must clean up this book removing said passages admitting that they are based on the Gabriel myth and therefore obviously the hallucinations and/or lies of Mohammed.

Then we can talk about the safety and location of mosques and what is taught therein.

Until then, no Muslim can be trusted anytime or anywhere..................................

      Sam Stone,
Just one question to you: Do you see any Christians moving to Middle East? Or do you see many Muslims moving to Europe and US. So which one is the more tolerant religion? Is Christianity was not a tolerant religion we wouldn't give any right to any other religion in US. Muslims have all the right here, they can preach, talk, whatever. But Christionas in Middle East are always harrassed, their churches are burned, and they are killed. So do not tell me lies. By the way I lived in a so called secular Muslim country: Turkey. Discrimination in Turkey against Christians is always there. One cannot even do Christian missionery work in Turkey without getting put in jail.

    • Jamie

It is all related. If the christianity did not teach about forgiveness and love we wouldnt evolve to where we are now. Look into the Islamic countries, you'll find none that's tolerant like the western countries. So there is certain effect of the religion on the governments.

Sam Stone, maybe you've misunderstood. This is what I've meant: Muslims can preach their religion freely here where the majority is Christian, but Christians cannot freely preach their religion in Middle East where the majority is Muslim. Got that now?

You must first understand the bible to understand why people fail. We are all sinners and fall short and that's why Jesus had to come and live the perfect life. Never ever think a christian is perfect and never ever think ever person that calls themselves a christian is a christian. A true Christian knows when they have sinned and they are convicted by the holly spirit. A non christian only sin's and thinks nothing of it. The world only wants to destroy christianity because they don't want to be convicted.

This is the most ridiculous concepts I've ever heard. The first to great commandments are to love God and love our neighbors. The idea that a Christian of any denomination has to justify loving anyone speaks to a complete misunderstanding of their own faith. Further, we are specifically commanded to "love (our) enemies and do good to those that curse (us)". If we don't offer love to all mankind, the fault is with us.

If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kiII him. (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB)

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

The basis for the New Testament is that Christ came to fulfill the Mosaic law. His life, atonement, and commandments supersede the laws of the Old Testament. The confusion and clarification over that is discussed over and over in the preaching of the Apostles.

I appreciate that perspective, but I believe there are some important aspects of the Bible that you're misunderstanding. From my comments alone, I think it should be apparent that I believe in and try to practice the universal love, respect, and admiration taught by Jesus Christ. The history and stories of the people throughout the Bible must be taken in context and with respect to the time and culture in which they lived. To read it, especially the Old Testament, under the criticism of our modern culture is to judge it unfairly and inaccurately.

DON'T JUDGE ISLAM BY WHAT CRIMINALS WHO HAPPEN TO HAVE MUSLIM NAMES DO JUST AS I DON'T JUDGE CHRISTIANITY BY WHAT THE KKK OR ANY OF THOSE OTHER RIGHT WING TERRORIST GROUPS DO. Christianity is about peace, forgiveness and love: Just read the New Testament, you wont see anytrhing about hatred or killing.
Islam: It's a very invasive religion that OKs everything in the name of spreading Islam. Look at Muhammed's life, married an 11 year old girl, killed during the war, discriminated against women, and preached his people it's OK to kill to defend your religion.

      August 20, 2012 at 12:56 pm |
    • Mass Debater

"Christianity is about peace, forgiveness and love: Just read the New Testament, you wont see anytrhing about hatred or killing."

This is like saying "Hey, were the new Al Qaeda, don't read any of that old stuff from our former leaders, just the new stuff on our blogs about loving your neighbor and helping people and giving them food, as long as they let us preach in their ears while eating our food..."

Christians worship the SAME God who ordered the women and children of the other nations to be murdered: "This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’” 1 sam 12:2-3

Any Christian who says they don't is lying to themselves which according to their New Testement, Rev 21:8 says "But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the se.xually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Islam also worships the very same God, the God of Abraham, who was a violent and angry jealous God who commands absolute fealty on pain of death. Infact, the Christians, Muslim and Jewish faiths all serve the very same master and thus share in the buckets of innocent blood that ancient desert deity's followers have on their hands.

First off, thank you for your service and I'm sure you belive everything you are stating about the quran, but i have read it and it's not true. Christians should never hate a person and they should love you as our heavenly father does. Your also confused with someone speaking against your religion and thinking they hate you. If I saw you drinking posion I would pull it from your hand and stop you. following the Quran is the same thing, but it last forever because it will lead you to hell. The Quran tells you to do more good things than bad things to get to heaven. do you know your score board? It also tells you if you die for your god then you automatically go to heaven. Asad I will pray for you and hopefully a true Christian will be able to share with you better than I am.

Thank you for sharing your experience and your wonderful story. I feel the same way.
I have also discovered that the only human beings who can be beobjective when it comes to religion are the ones that are agnostic! otherwise memebers of each religion are biased towards their own.

      PrimeNumber'
" Muslims to become better Muslims, Buddhists better Buddhists, Hindus better Hindus. (Christians better Christians)."

The problem there is that for Christians and Muslims to be "better" (and the truest of the true) they MUST convert the whole world to their religion. Buddhists and Hindus do not do that - are there any other religions that COMMAND world domination?

      August 20, 2012 at 1:23 pm |

OTOH You are mistaken. As Christians, we are commanded to spread the good news of Jesus crucified. What you do with that information is up to you. In fact, we are admonished not to waste time on those you cannot hear the message of salvation through grace by Christ. Not to say that some Christians don't keep at it hoping you will hear but we are not commanded to convert the world. That job falls to the Holy Spirit, in His time.

I think it's a betrayal to our Lord for any Christian pastor to ever invite a Muslim into his church to preach about Islam. Muslims deny the very thing Christians base their faith upon...the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Oh, they may believe Jesus was a prophet, but they deny he was God. And they deny he was crucified. And they deny he was resurrected. What could there POSSIBLY be about Islam that a Christian pastor would want his congregation to learn from a Muslim? If I were a member of a church whose pastor ever did that, I'd walk out and never go back.

They probably deny it for the very reason that you deny that moohamed was a prophet. Because there is no evidene to support the claim.

      You are all delusional.

When Jesus asked "Who do you say that I am?" he said a mouthful. People have been debating this Question for two millenia. Even atheists, who say they have resolved the issue, keep the Question very high on their list of important questions. The Church thought and prayed about the Question for over three centuries before putting an answer on paper. When such deep questions as this are handled by ordinary believers, there's bound to be confusion and disagreement. As Jesus said at Caesaria Phillipe, it is through God's grace that we know who Jesus is. It seems to me that when another person is earnestly coping with the God question, we should give him some breathing room.

So, that logic would apply to Jews, Hindus, Budhists etc. etc. because none of them believe Jesus as God. You would not allow any non-christian to come to your church and enlighten (not preach and convert) the members about their beliefs? It would be your loss as you would continue to live in the dark, by your choice. In my mosque our Imam is very active in interfaith dilaogue and frequently brings Jews, Christians, Hindus and all to talk and listen and share views. The idea is not to try to convert but to enlighten. only through enlightenment can we overcome these prejudices – but sadly you would not be a party to it.

I guess the real question though, is can Muslims learn to love Evangelicals...

    August 20, 2012 at 12:15 pm |
    • Jamie

I agree. In the Middle East Christians are constantly discriminated against, tormented, harrassed, killed and their churches are burned by Muslims. So the real question is this: WHY MUSLIMS CANNOT TOLERATE ANY OTHER RELIGION?

      August 20, 2012 at 12:40 pm |
    • Zee Carolina fan

They also need to be enlightended, about evangelicals. To the majority of muslims, christians are christians, and they know of no differences between the various denominations. In general there is no hatered in Islam about Christianity – quite the contrary, after Islam Christianity is the closest and most revered religion for muslims. After Mohammed, Jesus is the most revered personality as he is believed to be THE messiah who will come to save humanity. The hatred among some muslims is based on political happenings, not on religious differences. That's why interfaith interchage is so important so both sides can understand each other – something that is severly lacking these days.

Of course Christians can love Muslims. The question is: Can Muslims love evangelicals? Liberals assume that evangelicals are the enemy. Alinskey has forever changed liberalism because his method forces liberals to make enemies of groups that were that they once considered friendly. It also forces liberals to ally with groups that threaten their own existence.

A few years back CNN was doing a piece on the Muslim Holiday of Eid Mubarak, as a non-religious agnostic I had never heard of this Muslim Holiday but discovered through the CNN article it was a three day festival that was similar to New Years, Thanksgiving and Christmas all rolled into one.

CNN went on to say that many Muslims in the United States tend to be a bit sad over this Holiday because it's not universally recognized here as it is Muslim Nations.

So I decided to take a chance that day and play Eid Claus and went to the bakery and bought some various pastries and fruit baskets to hand out to the smattering of Muslim Shop Keepers in my neighborhood and a couple of my clients who happen to be Muslim.

Each was so astounded by this act and so warm and gracious in return, I ended up returning home with far more stuff than I had bought to give away and some really respectful and grateful new friends.

Later on that day I blogged on another popular website and encouraged other non-Muslims around the world to do the same. Emboldened by my own example people all over the world from Australia to England to the US took up my suggestion and tried it themselves.

Each came back having discovered the same thing, the Muslims that they hardly knew, neighbors, shop keepers etc, were all so grateful and pleased a non-Muslim was giving them holiday gifts and wishes they recieved many more in return than the brought and were often invited to dine and chat for hours with the people they approached to do this.

I never miss an Eid Mubarak now but yesterday I discovered there is also an Eid Al Fitar!

This occurs at the end of Ramadan so yesterday I got to play Eid Claus again.

Be an ambassador of good will yourself and see, no one is going to try to convert you, you're just likely to find some very grateful and wonderful and warm people who will be just as generous in thought and deed as you were if not more so.

The divide between the Christian/Judean West and Muslim East is not hard to bridge once you put a little effort into doing just that.

    Happy Eid Al Fitar!

Eid Mubarak is not a holiday. It simply means Happy Eid (like Merry Christmas). There are two Eids; Eid ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. One is after Ramadan where Muslims are required to give charity, and of course eat again. Eid al-Adha is also called the Festival of Sacrifice commemorates the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son, Ismail, per God's orders. The devil appears to Abraham and tries to convince him not to obey God because this is his son, but Abraham obeyed anyway and God intervened as he was about to sacrifice his son and replaced it with a lamb (or an animal like it). Just FYI.

Thomas, you're exactly what the world needs more of – people who respect the traditions of other people who are different from them, WITHOUT the need for reciprocity.

...In my tradition, which happens to be Christianity, I don't recall Jesus ever asking to be paid in ANY form before OR AFTER he gave wildly of himself to his brothers and sisters. That's why interfaith work is so important to me as a Christian – God wants me to love others because God loves freely and unconditionally.

We Christians love our neighbors as ourselves but that does not mean we are going to allow a deadly and worthless ideology such as Islam to come here and take over the country as islamist and mass-murderer Osama Bin Laden predicted. Muslims must learn that the fact that we protect ourselves agaisnt Islam does not mean we do not love them in the Christian sense. -30-

      August 20, 2012 at 3:09 pm |

As a straight, middle aged Catholic, I believe h0m0seexuality is an aberration. Therefore, supporting a society that does not enable such behavior is, in fact, an act of love not only to those who would deviate into that aberration, but to those other neighbors who would suffer by the degradation of norms.

And how would you or anyone else suffer from same-sex marriage? Or perhaps you just feel you have some kind of divine right to attempt and control other people. Gee, I wonder who else thought or thinks like that.

      August 20, 2012 at 5:16 pm |
    • YeahRight

"I believe h0m0seexuality is an aberration"

The experts disagree with you. Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

True, supporting a group that does not enable such behavior is not evil, but attacking a group that does enable such behavior is.

Bill is just another bigot trying to justify his icky feelings and hide his attacks on other humans in the guise of 'support' for straight marriage. It won't work Bill, we know what you are.

    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

How's that plan worked out for you so far, Billy? Has the percentage of gays changed at all? If gay marriage is legalized, do you think MORE people will "turn gay", as my 80+ mother-in-law puts it?

      Are you REALLY that dumb?

      August 20, 2012 at 6:21 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

"but to those other neighbors who would suffer by the degradation of norms"

Can you show any evidence that 'neighbors' in states and nations where gay marriage is legal are suffering a "degradation of norms"? What "norms", Bill? How does gay marriage degrade them?

Your argument is so weak it's almost sad.

      August 20, 2012 at 6:25 pm |

      @Tom

He knows it's a weak argument as well. That's why he hasn't come back to defend it. It's the MO of many religious here. Once they make a statement stupid enough, and it's pointed out, they just run away to a different article.

      August 20, 2012 at 7:25 pm |
    • Bill Deacon

Sorry, not a bigot, didn't run away, not trying to change gays or save the world. I simply believe the teachings of the Church I belong to and try to practice those as best I am able. You are likewise free to do the same. You reject the teachings of the Church, I reject the so called experts. That's called diversity. The article is about Christian and Muslim dialogue. My original post was simply a comment on Sam bringing the gay agenda into the discussion. There is more to life than who gay people sleep with and frankly, I couldn't care less. I do however, have my belief's and I can vote.

    • Bill Deacon

Sam, I don't believe I ever called anyone's ideology "deadly and worthless" though doubtless some are. But isn't that what atheists do?

      August 21, 2012 at 1:43 pm |
    • sam stone

"Sam, I don't believe I ever called anyone's ideology "deadly and worthless""

My initial post was in response to Jose Pen-de-jo saying that

      "though doubtless some are."

      Not to their adherents

"But isn't that what atheists do?"

      Some do.

Your post about having a vote implies that you would vote to deny others their civil rights. How is that NOT bigotry?

Just as Christians are the greatest victims of Christianity.

This isn't shoving ANYTHING down ANYONE's throat. It's an opinion piece about how Evangelicals change their views, and how Islams aren't the enemy everyone makes them to be.
