Opinion: American Muslims live in fear 11 years after 9/11

Editor's note: Sumbul Ali-Karamali is the author of "The Muslim Next Door: the Qur’an, the Media, and that Veil Thing, and Growing up Muslim: Understanding the Beliefs and Practices of Islam." She is on the steering committee of Women in Islamic Spirituality and Equality and is a member of the Muslim Women’s Global Shura Council, both of which aim to promote women’s rights and human rights from an Islamic perspective.

By Sumbul Ali-Karamali, Special to CNN

(CNN) – My father always told me never to talk about religion, politics, or other people’s children. He was part of a generation of American Muslims who wanted to stay quiet and assimilate into American life and not rock the boat. Growing up in Southern California, I tried to follow his advice.

But after 9/11, I found that I, along with other American Muslims, have had little choice but to talk about religion.

Although countless Muslims have condemned the acts of 9/11 in the United States and worldwide, American Muslims became objects of suspicion.

There is no persecution of Christians in America. Disagreement is not persecution, unless you are a contemporary faux Christian who seizes any opportunity, no matter how small or irrelevant, to wrap yourself in the mantle of victim hood. Sad and delusional.

Islam poses NO threat to America or our way of life, it is merely a religion.. It is those who practice the most extreme fundamentalism of Islam that threaten us. However, there are some who would claim that the extreme fundamentals in Christianity may well be just as dangerous.

Muslims are so intolerant, that the International Red Cross had to create a splinter operation and call it the Red Crescent because Muslims were so "offended" by the sight of the "cross". Never mind that the Red Cross has for something like nearly 150 years offered food, shelter, aid, comfort to ANYONE who needed it, with NO exceptions for Muslims. It wasn't because of anything that the Red Cross did that caused Muslims to demand the change. It was only Muslim intolerance.

Tolerance is a two way street. Until Muslims stop their total intolerance of any one else, they have no right to ask or expect tolerance from any one else.

To TC: assuming you are Muslim... either you do not practice what the Quoran teaches, or you are a liar if you claim that ALL Muslims are told to KILL all non believers. I believe the count is about 150 verses in the Quoran that call for KILLING non-believers.

And Wayne...There are a whole bunch of verses in the bible that call for the killing of non believers too. So... Would you than, as well, claim (as you have claimed for Islam) that a Christian wasn't a real Christian if they did not call for the killing on non-believers.

Islam Christianity and Judaism all have the same root. Of course they both would have the same call.... to kill unbelievers.

And by the way 150???? That must be some number some fundie preacher said... If you can READ and COUNT there are something like under 10 that say to kill. You have to add in all the 'fight the unbelievers' and all the admonitions of 'Allah says unbelievers are unclean' and 'Allah will punish the unbeliever' to get up to 35.

There are 12 direct commands to kill unbelievers in the bible.

      Go. Look. Count. I'll wait.

On 9/11 I was still in high school. My muslim classmates were visibly excited by the news, huddled together and kept saying things like "they had it coming", "it's about time", "Iraq must have done it". Our school was dominated by minorities, so they didn't try to keep things on the down low.

Back then, I didn't realize how callous they really are. Muslims are backstabbers.

Looks like some of those peaceful Muslims just took over our embassy in Cairo. You see the problem? The non-peaceful Muslims aren't just some small fringe gang somewhere that causes a nuisance. It's entire neighborhoods or cities of people who hate the U.S. and want it destroyed. How do you suggest that we prevent another 9/11, which you must admit was perpetrated by Muslim fanatics and is justified by their religious beliefs?

Revelations is open to any interpretation that anyone can think of. Actually, the Isle of Patmos where the writer had his "vision" of the Revelations was a popular "tourist" spot so to speak because one if it's principal products was poppy plants and of course hallucinagenic drugs. People went there specifically to have divine "visions" in a drug induced trance.

    • Inquiring-Mind

Well, let's look at the numbers here. Four airplanes plus people in the WTC. Now how many hundreds of thousands of Arab/Muslim people have died because of the hate-filled act of Muslims against innocent people eleven years ago. Add it up. Whatever you do, we can do bigger, better and with more lethality. Too bad the coalition forces didn't publish enemy body counts like they did in Vietnam. Probably cost Arab/Muslim people about 10,000 to one kill ratio. If Muslims keep up the pace, there won't be any Muslims left.

Maybe if Muslims didn't try to kill everyone who doesn't follow their religious belief system, they wouldn't have to live in fear of non-Muslims. "Honor killings", death penalties for anyone who desecrates THEIR sacred book. But how many holy books and symbols of faith of other religion have they wantonly destroyed (remember the ancient Buddah carvings in Afganistan)? Has ANY Muslim been put to death for desecrating our Holy Bible?

Bob, you aren't hurting my feelings at all, I am not a fundamentalist and don't see the bible as sacred in and of itself (two covers, 66 books and x number of pages). But the same applies to the Quoran. Any modern copy of the Quoran is printed in a man-made factory, on man-made machines, using man-made materials. Doesn't Islam demand the death penalty for idolotry? So isn't that what muslims are doing with the Quoran? To my knowledge, there aren't any Muslims walking around with a copy of the Quoran that was handed to them straight from the hand of god their their human hands. If there was such a copy, wouldn't the handling by a human be inexcusable desecration? It just seems that Muslims want everyone to be tolerant of their beliefs and practices while they show ZERO tolerance for anyone else's.
