My Take: It’s time for Islamophobic evangelicals to choose

Editor's Note: Brian D. McLaren  is author of "Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? Christian Identity in a Multi-Faith World" (Jericho Books/Hachette Book Group).

By Brian McLaren, Special to CNN

I was raised as an evangelical Christian in America, and any discussion of Christian-Jewish-Muslim relations around the world must include the phenomenon of American Islamophobia, for which large sectors of evangelical Christianity in America serve as a greenhouse.

At a time when U.S. embassies are being attacked and when people are getting killed over an offensive, adolescent and puerile film targeting Islam - beyond pathetic in its tawdriness – we must begin to own up to the reality of evangelical Islamaphobia.

Many of my own relatives receive and forward pious-sounding and alarm-bell-ringing e-mails that trumpet (IN LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS WITH EXCLAMATION POINTS!) the evils of Islam, that call their fellow evangelicals and charismatics to prayer and “spiritual warfare” against those alleged evils, and that often - truth be told - contain lots of downright lies.

For example, one recent e-mail claimed “Egyptian Christians in Grave Danger as Muslim Brotherhood Crucifies Opponents."  Of course, that claim has been thoroughly debunked, but the sender’s website still (as of Friday) claims that the Muslim Brotherhood has “crucified those opposing" Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy "naked on trees in front of the presidential palace while abusing others.”

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Many sincere and good-hearted evangelicals have never yet had a real Muslim friend, and now they probably never will because their minds have been so prejudiced by Islamophobic broadcasts on so-called Christian television and radio.

Janet Parshall, for example, a popular talk show host on the Moody Radio Network, frequently hosts Walid Shoebat, a Muslim-evangelical convert whose anti-Muslim claims, along with claims about his own biography, are frequently questioned.  John Hagee, a popular televangelist, also hosts Shoebat as an expert on Islam, as does the 700 Club.

Many Christian bookstores that (used to) sell my books, still sell books such as Paul Sperry’s "Infiltration: How Muslim Spies and Subversives Have Penetrated Washington" (Thomas Nelson, 2008). In so doing, they fuel conspiracy theories such as the ones U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minnesota, promoted earlier this year.

In recent days, we’ve seen how irresponsible Muslim media outlets used the tawdry 13-minute video created by a tiny handful of fringe Christian extremists to create a disgusting caricature of all Christians - and all Americans - in Muslim minds. But too few Americans realize how frequently American Christian media personalities in the U.S. similarly prejudice their hearers’ minds with mirror-image stereotypes of Muslims.

Ambassador's killing shines light on Muslim sensitivities around Prophet Mohammed

Meanwhile, many who are pastors and leaders in evangelicalism hide their heads in the current issue of Christianity Today or World Magazine, acting as if the kinds of people who host Islamophobic sentiments swim in a tiny sidestream, not in the mainstream, of our common heritage. I wish that were true.

The events of this past week, if we let them, could mark a turning point - a hitting bottom, if you will - in the complicity of evangelicalism in Islamophobia. If enough evangelicals watch or try to watch the film trailer that has sparked such outrage in the Middle East, they may move beyond the tipping point.

I tried to watch it, but I couldn’t make it halfway to the 13-minute mark. Everything about it was tawdry, pathetic, even pornographic. All but the most fundamentalist believers from my evangelical Christian tribe who watch that video will be appalled and ashamed to be associated with it.

It is hate speech. It is no different from the anti-Semitic garbage that has been all too common in Western Christian history. It is sub-Christian - beneath the dignity of anyone with a functioning moral compass.

Islamophobic evangelical Christians - and the neo-conservative Catholics and even some Jewish folks who are their unlikely political bedfellows of late - must choose.

Will they press on in their current path, letting Islamophobia spread even further amongst them? Or will they stop, rethink and seek to a more charitable approach to our Muslim neighbors? Will they realize that evangelical religious identity is under assault, not by Shariah law, not by the liberal media, not by secular humanism from the outside, but by forces within the evangelical community that infect that religious identity with hostility?

If I could get one message through to my evangelical friends, it would be this: The greatest threat to evangelicalism is evangelicals who tolerate hate and who promote hate camouflaged as piety.

No one can serve two masters. You can’t serve God and greed, nor can you serve God and fear, nor God and hate.

The broad highway of us-them thinking and the offense-outrage-revenge reaction cycle leads to self-destruction. There is a better way, the way of Christ who, when reviled, did not revile in return, who when insulted, did not insult in return, and who taught his followers to love even those who define themselves as enemies.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

Yes, “they” – the tiny minority of Muslims who turn piety into violence – have big problems of their own. But the way of Christ requires all who claim to be Christians to examine our own eyes for planks before trying to perform first aid on the eyes of others. We must admit that we have our own tiny minority whose message and methods we have not firmly, unitedly and publicly repudiated and rejected.

To choose the way of Christ is not appeasement. It is not being a “sympathizer.”

The way of Christ is a gentle strength that transcends the vicious cycles of offense-outrage-revenge.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Brian D. McLaren.

Look it doesn't mean one is a Islamphobic to observe that most of the religious persecutions are being committed by Islam extreamist. There are certainly millions of kind Muslims in the world, but they need to be more vocal and take action against the extramist, but they don't. I see the thousands of killings and persecutions of Catholics and other Christians by Islamics go unpunished and often unreported by the media, with very few Muslims speaking out, yet they scream outrage when a koran is desectated or their faith insulted. Islamics will riot and kill over such offenses, but Christians must accept such offenses like burning of our bibles, holy icons, or even murdering our Christians and Jews. A good example is how Hilary Clinton made a fool of herself and the US by making apologies for a stupid video insulting Islam that the US had nothing to do with. We need to quit being politically correct to appease murderers and terrorist thugs. Muslims leaders need to be accountable for the actions of their extreamist that terrorize innocent people and other faiths.

Does the author have any lectures for the intolerance of those who supposedly reacting to a "trailer" that practically no one in the US had ever heard about? Is he so naive as to believe that this violence was really about that video? The information available says that this was a planned attack that had nothing whatsoever to do with the hate film that the author has chosen to blame. How many times must this be laid at the feet of people in the US? How about you blame Bush? Blame the Pope. Ask the rest of the Muslim population to take a stand against those who commit murder in the name of Islam. After all, you don't hesitate to lay this on the Christians who had no part in this whatsoever.

Islam is an absolute scourge on humanity. Of course, so are all other religions. It just so happens that at the moment, Islam happens to be going through a particularly bad phase, but the world would be better off without any religion.

Crucifixion is nothing more than Cruci- in Sci-fiction movies of a pagan god Mithra, savior, labeled as fictional man Jesus and their book of Mithraism, absurdity called bible bares witness to it. Handy work of kafeer's, filthy self centered to fool humanity. Adopt Mohammad and enjoy 72 hoors.

The PROBLEM, here, in "grouping all muslims into one category" you fools, is that you can't tell the good ones from the bad ones. HOW can you trust a people that can turn on you at any moment? It's like having a dog that is your friends for years, and one day he takes a nice bite out of you. In my opinion, NONE of you muslims are to be trusted, youre religion DICTATES that "infidels must be destroyed" so HOW can you be a "religion of peace?" You stone your women if they are unfaithful, you stone "blashphemers" and you KILL anyone that does not adhere to Islam. the entire world does not trust you. Look at what is going on in the world today. . . muslims throughout the world are storming embassies and throwing their lives away because someone made a movie that disresepcts Muhammad? I mean, really, there's just nothing to say after that. You all have the potential for violecne and you should all just go back to your stone-age country and stay there. Keep your insane Sharia laws and implement them on your owm people, not the rest of the free world.

From Quran Chapter 60 verse 7-9

Perhaps Allah will make friendship between you and those whom you hold as enemies. And Allah has power (over all things), and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
8 Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity.
9 It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zalimoon (wrong-doers those who disobey Allah).

So is Quran asking Muslim to kill all Non-Muslims or are we not "just" informed ? (Not from what I found just by googling it)

      What about the "Bible" comment

      "Bible
Luke 19:27 King James Version (KJV)
But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

So much hatred among us (based on most of the comments I read so far) and we call ourselves the "Developed" ones. The one who believe in Jesus"

Tai the verse you are referring to is of course taken out of context as usual by people like yourself all the time. The meaning of it is for Jews that went away from God and His teachings and at the end will be sent to hell instead of heaven and will not partake in God's glory. So just because it looks like it says this it doesn't mean that exactly because it's a parable and parables are used very often in the bible and that's why many that are not christians interpret it incorrectly such as yourself.

When its Bible then its "someone" taking words out of context but when it is any other religion then its the fault of that religion/book.

Yes Tai it was taken out of context. Did you not read what i wrote or what. It's a parable. Google parable please.

Islamaphobia ? You're kidding right ? Maybe you're not seeing...or actually studying the truth roots of Islam and its followers. If you are a christian, which would be in question if one thinks the muslims are not praying to satan instead of God, then you could never give a muslim the benefit of the doubt knowing how evil they really are and yes every single one of them. If you study there "holy" books you can then understand, if you have common sense, that they are praying to satan NOT any God whatsoever. The religion teaches hatred of others outside of there religion which the principles of the Bible in the NT teaches only love for others no matter who they are or what they believe. Any person or Christian that thinks there are moderate muslims is lying to themselves, have never studied the subject as i have intensively or is flat out a liar and a deciever. After much study it is easy to see and comprehend that Mohammed was an evil, murderous pedophile that lied to all his followers to incorporate satanic beliefs in them all which is what we see all around the world from said followers be they jihadists, "moderate" muslims or simply everday common folk that are muslims. Study the religion and study history for the facts that they live by every day and it will be obvious to a person with common sense that this religion is satanic in nature and the will of satan has/is/will come forth....as we see everyday from these barbaric types of people that live in the 7th century ideals to this day even still. The end fight will be muslims against the christians at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It is written and has been foretold in our book. How hard is that to understand that we are not friends and never will be. Get a grip people because the fight has begun many moons long ago. The end is near. We see it coming everyday for the last battle to be faught. Islamaphobia is a term not to be taken lightly. It's satan vs God. Pick a side because there are only 2 choices and nothing inbetween. Revelations has all the answers and the winner has already been determined, lol. So make sure you pick the right side which the nation of islam and its followers are on the wrong side.....which is satans side. Only satanic people would act like they do so it's no surprise. Truth is truth and no sense in being nice about it. It is what it is. Any person describing it as islamaphobia is only part of the problem or lying to all that know better. In other words you didn't pick and are on the wrong side....too bad for you.

      @ Free Thinker,

You are an Id*ot.. no better the idiots in the streets of Lybia, Cairo or elsewhere.. you are just on the opposite side.

And thank you for confirming everything the author said is true. You are the exact reason and perfect example of who the author was referring to.

Repukes...are you kidding LOL...never !! And Dems....LOL..never...anyone that votes for either side is an idiot of idiots and ground into hamburger by the elitists realm of perpetual nonsense of picking losers from either side. The end of days come whether you belive or not. If you would happen to study it you would understand the end has been in fruitation for a long time but is getting very close now. Try actually studying something so you can understand what's really happening in the world. It is not always what it seems to be Mike or beyond some people intellect obviously.

Another person that doesn't have a clue about what is really happening in the world and why it is happening. So go study about the Temple Mount...try google...and see WHY the fight is has been ongoing and who is involved in that fight. Seek and you shall find. People that are not knowing are the ones that respond such as you do.

Ok...Free Thinker, if that's what you call your diatribe above, your content is ok if not a bit vitriolic and paranoid. Your claim to have 'studied' the Koran thoroughly and your claim to be a student of religion is a HOLLOW, EMPTY claim since you cannot even use the English language properly. Throughout your comment you constantly use the word 'there' in place of 'their' or 'they're' and you also use hackneyed, cliched sayings and turns of phrases. Dude, get a life, get an education and get a truly 'free' thinking mind. You haven't 'studied' anything, contrary to your claims of scholarship. It's quite obvious you probably don't posses an education higher than 12th grade, if you even graduated so do yourself (and all of us) a favor and truly think things through before your post, ok?

So they have their fanatics their and we have ours here. So sad we have come to this point where we don't follow the teachings of Jesus.

Look i have studied ALL religions first off. Just so you know english was easily my WORST subject, lol. And i don't need a history degree to understand history, alright, get the picture. Which your thoughts do not in any way reliquish anything i have stated whatsoever. Paranoia is only a state of mind. Truth is any matter is truth. Lies are lies. It's that simple. Stating muslims and their beliefs, happy now, and the truth thereof is simply merely truth and sometimes the truth hurts. I can't help it that the koran was copied and the likes of the hadith and sirah are misinforming the people of islam into believing things that are simply false. And then to watch people write commentaries stating that all muslims are not the same or if we do not understand we are islamaphobic and to not call them out on it as stating the obvious untruth of it all would be void of my purpose to spread the word. I'm glad to see many here posting are alike minded as myself and do see through the lies.

We see what CNN is doing here... Evangelicals are bad (even though they aren't the ones burning things down) and Mitt Romney is supported by Evangelicals. Hence, Mitt Romney is bad.

By the way, anyone check the national debt or unemployment rate lately???

But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.
Am I taking this verse out of "context" ?

    September 16, 2012 at 3:06 pm |
    • But Jesus said

Yes, out of context. Who are Christians named after? Christ Jesus. Jesus said to love your enemies, so it's kind of hard for Christians to call themselves true Christians if they behave as violently as the Muslims.

For Oprah to even acknowledge male vmciits is a huge step in the right direction. But no, I didn't see it. Even so, I'm glad she did it, just as I was glad when Tyra Banks did an episode on male vmciits of domestic violence and even had some of the female batterers on the show. She wasn't nice or sympathetic to the women who abused their men, either, which was a real surprise.

You value freedom-of-speech in America? Wonderful. Please continue. Stop trying to remake your image on everyone else. Respect other countries traditions and values and you will be respected. Otherwise it will lead to more terrorism against you.

    That's me,

The problem with your view is that you group ALL MUSLIMS into the same category. The reality is that what we see on the news, represents only a tiny fraction of of the billion Muslims in the world. Look at newsreels from the 1960's in the US and you'd imagine that everyone in the country is a protesting hippie when in fact the hippie counter culture represented a tiny fraction of U.S. culture. But if you gather them all up on the same street, a few hundred or a thousand people can seem like millions and millions when they are not.

    September 16, 2012 at 3:03 pm |
    • Free Thinker

You are incorrect Tom and have obviously no clue what there "holy" books read. ALL muslims believe in there holy books and live there life by them. Problem is they are based in satanic ideals. Anyone that says that there are moderate muslims or they are all not a like doesn't have a clue what they live there life by in there books. Try studying so you understand what ALL muslims believe in and what they do not believe in. You are clueless.

      September 16, 2012 at 3:12 pm |
    • LOL

The problem is that it is both a big and violent fraction among whom many prominent Islamic teachers encourage violence and hatred. Go look at some of their sermons on MEMRI. There is a reason to address this large fraction of the Islamic world.

McLaren always associates everything that is wrong with Christianity with Evangelcals. Yes, there are some bad evangelicals out there...but I have yet to see an evangelical mob burn down an embassy. Just sayin.

    September 16, 2012 at 3:00 pm |
    • LOL

Got that right. And why only evangelicals? Ibn Warraq is probably one of the more famous outspoken opponents of Islam, and yet he is agnostic. What about atheists who speak out against Islam? Why the vitriol spit at evangelicals? Because Brian McLaren and his ilk are anti-evangelical, Evangelicalphobic, hateful, and intolerant of opposing views.

See En EN likes Muslims who are intolerable toward any religion , but they blow a gasket if a Christian says anything contrary to Islam.
See and N doesn't realize Islam hates them just like Christian.
They continue to prop Muslims up.
You don't see Christian mobs attacking muslimS because they jailed and threatened to kill an Iranian "apostate" who has become a Christian.
Why must Islam be so barbarrak?

  19. That's me

There is a very good reason for being mistrustful of muslims. It's not a phobia, it is common sense. Muslims have a narrow focused objective..to conquer and force nonbelievers to convert or be killed. It's in their texts and their collective behavior. The proliferation of Mosques in the U.S. is a quiet "peaceful" takeover of our country and our way of life for which they have no respect or tolerance. One day we will regret allowing their numbers to surge and the well mannered muslims here will become rioting monster like their relatives in the middle-east. It's only a matter of time. So what are we going to to do protect ourselves.

Difference is, when the evangelicals you are bashing get offended, they don't go killing people. They are afraid of Islam because they have literally seen thousands of Americans killed in the last 12 years in the name of Islam. Yes, its a fringe movement within the religion. Why are you blaming the people that are afraid instead of the people that are making them afraid?

Here is a real simple question for you. Who do you think would be safer on average. A Muslim hanging out at Ground Zero or a white American hanging out in Palestine.

There are 1.5 billion Muslims in the world. Most of the protests number in the thousands and hundreds. The Muslims who commit violence number in the low hundreds. This means that more than 99.99% of Muslims did not react to the amateurish video in any visible way. The USA also has it stupid radicals. The difference is our violent radicals are restrained by rather robust education, law enforcement and judiciary systems, so they make provocative hate speeches, movies, etc. against people they do not like on the basis of religion and race instead of killing. Remember, a mere 60 to 100 years ago, our violent radicals were killing Chinese, Irish and blacks with impunity. It was also common to write hateful things about Jews and Catholics. The Middle East countries (excluding Israel) have had democracy for only about a year after decades of dictatorship.
