What really enrages Muslims? Twitter knows

By Richard Allen Greene, CNN

What really enrages Muslims?

Having a really good hair day - but no one knows because you wear a hijab.

Not being able to say "Hi" to your friend Jack in a plane - or to call out for your nephew when he gets lost in an airport because his name is "Jihad."

The 72 virgins all turn out to be male.

The tongue-in-cheek answers are part of an explosion of sharply satirical responses on Twitter to a Newsweek magazine cover showing Muslim men in turbans and keffiyahs, apparently rioting, under the banner all caps headline "MUSLIM RAGE."

Thousands of Muslims have made fun of the magazine headline since Monday, when it published a long article by the Somali-born writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former Muslim who describes herself as a "combatant in the clash of civilizations."

She links this month's protests against an online film making fun of the Muslim prophet Mohammed - which have resulted in several deaths around the world, including that of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens - to the reaction in 1989 against Salman Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses."

"In 23 years not much has changed," Ali argues. "Islam's rage reared its ugly head again last week.

"The American ambassador to Libya and three of his staff members were murdered by a raging mob in Benghazi, Libya, possibly under the cover of protests against a film mocking the Muslim Prophet Muhammad," Ali writes.

Newsweek's cover puts Ali herself at the heart of the story about "Muslim rage," with the sub-heading: "How I survived it. How we can end it."

Ali, a sharp critic of Islamist violence and of what she sees as Europe's limp response to it, claims that the rioters represent mainstream Muslim views.

"The Muslim men and women (and yes, there are plenty of women) who support - whether actively or passively - the idea that blasphemers deserve to suffer punishment are not a fringe group. On the contrary, they represent the mainstream of contemporary Islam," she argues.

The "many Muslims and ex-Muslims" who "unambiguously condemn" the murders and riots "are marginalized and all too often indirectly held responsible for the very provocation."

But by Tuesday morning, on Twitter at least, far from being marginalized, those Muslims were relentlessly making fun of Newsweek and Ali.

One tweet showed the magazine cover doctored to make the rioting Muslim men look like glam rockers, replacing the headline with "Muslim Rave."

Remi Kanzai riffed on the same theme: "Just add nighttime & glow sticks. It goes from #MuslimRage to #MuslimRave."

Some of the more serious tweets dealt with the discrimination Muslims feel at airports: "When a 'female assist' is called before I even walk through the metal detector."

But many kept the mood light, complaining about work, family, Islamic restrictions on eating pork and drinking wine, or fasting during Ramadan.

"The Dark Knight Rises came out in Ramadan," one complained.

And some aimed their barbs directly at the writer of the provocative piece.

"Whaaaaat?!" Megh demanded. "Ayaan Hirsi Ali doesn't have an active Twitter account?!"

    Dear Justice4Sarah:

I hate to tell you this, but IT IS the AMERICAN Born/USABorn individuals who ARE NOT FREETHINKERS!! It is the foreign born children to American Expatriates (i.e children who take their citizenship from their U.S. born parents THAT ARE THE REAL FREETHINKERS!! We are adult third culture "kids" who have spent all of our developmental years abroad....and then returned to our HOME country, where we must endure the commonplace ignorance and poorly educated adults who lack any interest in foreign policy and base all their opinions on what only goes on in their own backyard....Please give your head a good shake and crack open a book every little now and then!

    The destructiveness of all religions!

If the human race would serve “God” from their hearts and not religion or religious books, this world would be a far better place for all of humanity!

I am no Atheist but I do not follow “any” religion “period!” All religions, irrespective of what that religion may be, “came from man,” and they are all flawed because “mankind” consists of fallible and imperfect human beings.

If people serve God and not religion you couldn’t possibly come to the conclusion that somehow God desires for you to hurt or kill or both, another human being because of what they may say about your religion.

Religion that derived from “man,” is one of the most destructive parts of the human race from the inception of “mankind,” and it will be until the demise of the “mortal” world!

    God is not a religion!

Thomas Carlyle, [1795-1881] following Plato, [437 B.C.] pictures a man, a deep pagan thinker, having lived in a cave all his life… http://wp.me/p1wG70-eD

The Muslims are NOT HAPPY in Gaza, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Indonesia.
The Muslims ARE HAPPY in Australia, England, France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, the USA, Norway, Holland, and Denmark.
Muslims are HAPPY in every country that is NOT Muslim and UNHAPPY in every country that IS!
Who do the Muslims blame? not Islam; not their leadership; not themselves.
THEY BLAME THE COUNTRIES THEY ARE HAPPY IN!
And then; They want to CHANGE those countries to be like....THE COUNTRY THEY CAME FROM WHERE THEY WERE UNHAPPY!

Really? I don't see any Muslims trying to 'change' America. It seems all they want is equal rights and protection against discrimination. ...Oh, right, maybe that IS a change. (FOR THE BETTER)

This article is seriously insulting! You need to research a topic before going at it like this! women CHOOSE to wear hijab just like other women choose to wear bikinis! why does freedom has to mean going naked? why not freedom in covering up? its a choice you know! and there is nothing wrong with the name jihad since jihad actually means "fighting for your country and people" without waiting for anything in return, for the love of god there are NO 72 virgins!!!!!! freedom of speech does not mean insulting other people! just like Christians have good people and bad people, and like Jews have saints and criminals, ISLAM also has good blood and bad blood and religion has never been an invitation for war or terrorism ISLAM is innocent from all those bearded terrorists speaking with name of ISLAM, we Muslims are very peaceful and loving, kindly don't post such stuff again!

Mate, these were sarcastic tweets made by many Muslims on twitter against the hashtag Muslimrage. It was just a tongue-in-cheek reference to it by saying how Muslims will rage on even the smallest of things. It didnt mean anything, all of the tweets, or most of them anyway, were sarcastic.

Weirdly, however, the "good" Muslims never tend to be as vocal against the bad ones as Jews and Christians are against their own bad.

This article is not insulting, it was the Newsweek article that was insulting. This article only shows that may Muslims do not agree that they are in a state of 'rage' and are making fun of that idea. You are totally right, we all have a right to choose. Muslims are our neighbors, our families, our co-workers, and our friends. I'm for one glad that we have diversity in this country. And accept all faiths.

Did we read the same article?? Muslims were making fun of the fact that Newsweek published that report. They were doing so BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT THIS 'MUSLIM RAGE' CRAP was a bunch of hooey. Did you not get that? And who are the baboons, your own countrymen? Please, take some reading comprehension classes and leave the commenting to people who actually have the ability to read the articles.

Hi there!!! I know you!! You are that person who is U.S. born, and has never left the country to expose yourself by living in another culture for any extended period of time!! You are the person that cannot carry on an intelligent conversation on any factual political topic! I know YOU! I see you everyday, everywhere!
