Pew poll: Obama opens up lead over Romney among Catholics

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama has opened up a significant lead among Catholic voters, a crucial swing voting bloc, according to a recent Pew poll.

Obama leads opponent Mitt Romney among Catholic voters by 54% to 39%, according to the survey, conducted from September 12 to 16 by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

Obama’s lead in the Pew survey comes despite outspoken recent criticism of the Obama administration from America’s Catholic bishops and despite Mitt Romney’s selection of a Catholic running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan.

The survey was released last week, but the findings on Catholic voters were highlighted this week by the Religion News Service, which notes that Obama held a much tighter 49-47% lead over Romney among Catholics in a June Pew poll.

John Green, a religion and politics expert at the University of Akron, said Obama’s gains among Catholic came from growing support among Hispanic and black Catholic voters, but also from white Catholics, among whom Obama is now tied with Romney.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

“That’s the part of the poll that I think is kind of surprising,” Green said, noting that Obama lost white Catholics in 2008, even as he won the overall Catholic vote.

Green said that it is white Catholics who were most likely to be receptive to the bishops’ recent attacks against the Obama administration over what the church says is the White House’s curtailment of religious freedom.

In its recent “Fortnight for Freedom,” campaign, the church urged American priests to denounce the administration’s requirement that health insurance companies provide free contraception coverage to employees, even if those employees work for Catholic organizations that oppose contraception.

“The bishops were hoping those efforts would bring more moderate and liberal Catholics, not necessarily for Romney but against the administration’s position,” Green said.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

John Allen, CNN’s chief Vatican analyst, noted that at least one other recent national poll gave Romney a slight lead among Catholics, and that Romney leads among Catholics who attend Mass each week.

“That either shows that the more practicing you are, the more pro-Romney (or anti-Obama) you are,” Allen said in an e-mail message, “or it says something about the political message Catholics are getting in their parishes these days.”

Catholic voters, who accounted for more than a quarter of the electorate in the 2008 election, have voted with the winning presidential candidate in every election going back to the early 1990s.

In 2008, Obama beat John McCain among Catholics by 54% to 45%. In 2004, John Kerry - the first Catholic nominee for president since John F. Kennedy - lost the Catholic vote to George W. Bush, provoking Democrats to take Catholic outreach more seriously.

Both major parties had America’s highest-profile Catholic cleric, New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, give the closing prayer at their recent political conventions.

The Democratic Convention also featured a Catholic nun who led a “nuns on the bus" tour attacking the federal budget that Ryan designed in his role as chairman of the House Budget Committee.

The Obama and Romney campaigns have both rolled out Catholic outreach efforts in recent days, and the Romney camp has highlighted Ryan’s Catholicism.

“A faithful Catholic, Paul believes in the worth and dignity of every human life,” Romney said when he introduced Ryan as his running mate last month.

Who are they polling? There isn't a catholic I know who likes this clown we have for a president. CNN, the newspapers are a bunch of liberal idiots! By the way, taxpayers have spent 1.4 billion on Obozo's family in 2011. Thought she shopped at Walmart. These people are like snakes, they crawl on their bellies to get votes, they lie, and cheat!

If you don't like the results of a poll, then it must be propaganda. This is the Republican argument in a nutshell lately.

I'm a Catholic for 50 years, my family and I are voting for O'bama. Any catholic who has read the New Testament knows Jesus was about poor people. So why vote for the party that fought against social security, medicare, unemployment benefits, pell grants, student loans, funding for state schools and breakfst for poor children in school. Hey Katz tax payers spent 2 trillion and 4000 soldiers lives on a war we shouldn't have been in Iraq.

Romney when running for governor in a blue state full of liberals.

    -Pro choice
    -Pro gun control
-Thought global warming was manmade and required immediate attention.
-Stated (and you can look it up) that his Romneycare should be a national model and used at the federal level

Romney running for nomination for the Republican party run by conservative tea partiers.

    -Absolutely against abortion
    -Absolutely silent on gun control
-Global warming a fraud- do away with all environmental legislation
-Repeal Obamacare! It was never meant to be national!

Romney running for president as a Republican to the entire population of both liberals AND conservatives.

    -"Kind of" against abortion
    -Still silent on gun control
-"Kind of" talks about global warming and it's "kind of" man made
-Still hates on Obamacare but says "let's keep some of its provisions"

Seriously do you need any more evidence he's just pandering for votes and doesn't have any actual stance?

    September 27, 2012 at 2:44 pm |
    • skarphace

Well, to be honest, this is how a POTUS race is run. First, you pander to your base to get the nomination. Then, you move to the center in order to get the moderate vote.

However, Romney not only took way too long to move to the center (as Teapublicans did not trust him), but he chose an ultraconservative as his running mate. These two mistakes will cost him the election.

"it says something about the political message Catholics are getting in their parishes these days.”

This is the problem with religious leaders in America lately. They have become political pundits. If this problem persists, then these leaders who insist on giving political advice should lose their nonprofit status. Problem solved.

Tis for those catholic conservative sheep! I just cannot believe these so called conservatives, evangelical, rightwing, radical liars, pretenders, deceivers, I think If Jesus Christ could be tempted to believe in abortion, that is to abort everyone these hypocrites, they would have never been born to lie, cheat, steal, deceive, misrepresent, mislead anyone in this world! Just think, what Mormons believe (check their doctrinal stance not their media dissertation), is that Jesus Christ brother is Satan! IT’S REMARKABLE FOR A SOCALLED CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE TO SUPPORT A PERSON WITH THIS VIEW! THAT MEANS THE ANTICHRIST WILL BE A REPUGLICAN CONSERVATIVE! All we have to do is look at Sam Bacile, Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Fla, Morris Sadek, a conservative Coptic Christian in the U.S. whose behind the film which is responsible for deaths of Americans!

    Dear Catholics:

    God here.

First, I do not exist. The concept of a 13,700,00,000 year old being, capable of creating the entire Universe and its billions of galaxies, monitoring simultaneously the thoughts and actions of the 7 billion human beings on this planet is ludicrous.

Second, if I did, I would have left you a book a little more consistent, timeless and independently verifiable than the collection of Iron Age Middle Eastern mythology you call the Bible. Hell, I bet you cannot tell me one thing about any of its authors or how and why it was edited over the centuries, yet you cite it for the most extraordinary of claims.

Thirdly, when I sent my “son” (whatever that means, given that I am god and do not mate) to Earth, he would have visited the Chinese, Ja.panese, Europeans, Russians, sub-Saharan Africans, Australian Aboriginals, Mongolians, Polynesians, Micronesians, Indonesians and native Americans, not just a few Jews. He would also have exhibited a knowledge of something outside of the Iron Age Middle East.

Fourthly, I would not spend my time hiding, refusing to give any tangible evidence of my existence, and then punish those who are smart enough to draw the natural conclusion that I do not exist by burning them forever. That would make no sense to me, given that I am the one who elected to withhold all evidence of my existence in the first place.

Fifthly, in the same vein, I would not make about 5% of the human population gay, then punish them for being that way. In fact, I wouldn’t care about how humans have $ex at all, given that I created all of the millions of millions of species on the planet, all of whom are furiously reproducing all the time. Human $ex would be of no interest to me, given that I can create Universes. Has it ever occurred to you that your obsession with making rules around human $ex is an entirely human affair?

Sixth, I would have smited all traditional Catholics, (and evangelicals and fundamentalists) long before this. You people drive me nuts. You are so small minded and yet you speak with such false authority. Many of you still believe in the talking snake nonsense from Genesis. I would kill all of you for that alone and burn you for an afternoon (burning forever is way too barbaric even for me to contemplate).

Seventh, the whole idea of members of one species on one planet surviving their own physical deaths to “be with me” is utter, mind-numbing nonsense. Grow up. You will die. Get over it. I did. Hell, at least you had a life. I never even existed in the first place.

Eighth, I do not read your minds, or “hear your prayers” as you euphemistically call it. There are 7 billion of you. Even if only 10% prayed once a day, that is 700,000,000 prayers. This works out at 8,000 prayers a second – every second of every day. Meanwhile I have to process the 100,000 of you who die every day between heaven and hell. Dwell on the sheer absurdity of that for a moment.

Ninthly, had I existed, do you really think my representation on Earth would have such a history of corruption, retardation of science, financial misdeeds, political intrigue, outright criminal behavior and $exual misconduct, including pedophilia, as the Vatican does. I mean, come on! As a CEO, I would be fired for allowing my organization to run amok century after century.

Finally, the only reason you even consider believing in me is because of where you were born. Had you been born in India, you would likely believe in the Hindu gods, if born in Tibet, you would be a Buddhist. Every culture that has ever existed has had its own god(s) and they always seem to favor that particular culture, its hopes, dreams and prejudices. What, do you think we all exist? If not, why only yours?

Look, let’s be honest with ourselves. There is no god. Believing in me was fine when you thought the World was young, flat and simple. Now we know how enormous, old and complex the Universe is.

Move on – get over me. I did.

    God

There is absolutely no way you can consider yourself a Catholic, much less a Christian, and vote for anyone who favors the elimination of safety nets for the poor, opposes redistribution of wealth, assisting the needy and the least fortunate in our society . IF a Catholic does vote for Romney or anyone else who supports such policies, they should leave the church. They are not Catholic.

As a Catholic I have to say that I think the bishops political push against contraception is backfiring. Honestly, the administration isn't requiring that christian organizations provide birth control but that *all* health insurance plans provide it (excepting self insured organizations). If a fellow Catholic doesn't want to make use of contraception they will not be forced into it.

I guess it is too difficult for some, like you, to grasp. It IS NOT about the individual being able to deny it, but rather the fact that the Church, through insurance mandated by a socialist regime is being forced to provide coverages that are in conflict with church doctrine. Try and grasp it will you so you won't appear so ignorant!

And hell, I'm not even Catholic!

Don't like the Roman Catholic church? Leave – Martin Luther did. The liturgy is pretty much the same – so there's no new words to memorize (you won't feel out of place). Services tend to run exactly 1 hour – time to get home for football. No kneeling during services – less visits to your doctor – a kinder, gentler, service. No rosary (but you can if you want), no private confession – you and God know what you did – no one else needs to. And, if you go ELCA, they tend to stay out of your personal lives. That or the Spaghetti Monster – his noodlie appendage tickles my brain.

Well, and a lot of them care about their finances as middle class people. Rummy pirate is completely out of touch with the middle class.

As a white, female, catholic, who attends weekly Mass, I'm voting for President Obama again. Romney is a lying hypocrite. God help us if he wins.

    September 27, 2012 at 2:30 pm |
    • Jack

How do you justify voting for someone who is for abortion and go to mass weekly?

      September 27, 2012 at 2:31 pm |
    • cnnmembuh

As a fellow Catholic, I would respectfully ask you what you believe Gov. Romney has lied about, and what is the basis for your charge of hypocrisy?

I haven't seen anything in the Bible(s) speaking out against abortion. However, I do see where God has not only condoned it, but has also committed it. God once ordered all of the male children of one race murdered. He also allegedly flooded the entire planet, thus aborting every single fetus in existence. If it's good enough for God, who are we to question it.

cnnmembuh, Romney has changed his stance on practically everything just to get votes. Have you been paying attention at all?

A recent article in America questioned which party is more "Pro Life". It shows that both parties support policies in opposition to a "Catholic" Pro Life stand. And, both parties support some pro life views. Read it and see that there is more to pro life than a vote against abortion.

I would respectfully ask you what you believe Gov. Romney has lied about...

      Womans rights.
      Abortion.
      Gay rights.
      Health care.
      Social security.
      Safety net for the poor.

You want me to go on ?
Is he for, or against them this week ?

If you have not heard any of this, you are either a fool or a liar.

Romney is a liar? What have you been smoking? Here try this and let's see who lied to you and you are still too blind to see it! God help you!

I don't knnow a single catholic that reads the Bible...And ever Cathollic I know is an alcoholic or ex alcoholic...Its the religion you can do anything with...! And how can they call it a Christian Religion when they turned their backs on the sick priest that
have ruined so many lives for children...And I know a lot of Catholics! And many times I have asked them, how can you do the things you do and still go to church with a clear conscience...And they all reply, confession...Then their ready to go again and commit the same sin they just confessed...Must be great...But thats not even close to what the bibles says...So its no wonder they are standing behind Obama...But one thing is...They never miss church.....!

      @James

I was raised Catholic, and we were actively discouraged from reading the bible, and were told to rely on what the priest says and to read the Cathecism. My deconversion began with reading the bible lol.

Your ignorance is astounding. Where do I begin? How about with this: Catholicism is THE ORIGINAL and true Christian church. Now, you're truly going to stand by your lie that EVERY Catholic is an alcoholic or former alcoholic??

      September 27, 2012 at 2:35 pm |
    • James PDX

cnnmembuh, Catholicism isn't the original anything. It is the usurpation of the Jewish religion. Prior to the alleged son of god being born, god couldn't care less about anybody but his beloved Jews. In fact, if you weren't Jewish he would gladly lead his people into battle and destroy your people so the Jews could take your land.

BTW, here's a revalation for you: I'm Catholic and I read the Bible. All of my Catholic friends have Bibles in their homes.

      September 27, 2012 at 2:41 pm |
    • cnnmembuh

      @JamesPDX – I said original CHRISTIAN church.

      September 27, 2012 at 2:52 pm |
    • hawaiiguest

      @cnnmembuh

Well you are one of the many who go against standard church teaching. Or maybe that was merely for catholic schools. Either way, you reading a bible has absolutely zero impact on what I was told in catholic school and churches. So maybe you're just not being a good enough catholic, reading the "holy word" for yourself, and not relying solely on the "pious" preachers to tell you what you need to know.

cnnmembuh, so if I am the first person to plagiarize something, that makes me an original? NICE!

There is absolutely no way you can consider yourself a Catholic, much less a Christian, and vote for anyone who favors the killing in innocent children through abortion. IF a Catholic does vote for Obama or anyone else who supports abortion, they should leave the church. They are not Catholic.

    September 27, 2012 at 2:28 pm |
    • ChristopherM

There is also absolutely no way under your logic that you can consider yourself a Catholic if you vote for anyone who favors the starvation of actual born children, the mass killing of other born children and adults through wars predicated on lies, or the execution of people in the name of justice. You are not Catholic.

RIGHT ON JACK...TEll EM...have of these posters say they are CATHOLIC and would still vote for the current occupant in the white house....Yeah..sure..they are....imposter BS artists.

Raised Roman Catholic, Sacred Heart Church Waltham Mass.

During confirmation i was told to kiss the bishops ring.
When asked why, i was told it was to honor the bishop.
      I refused.

I am a Catholic, but follow Jesus, not the garbage
      the church hands out.
You blind sheep dont understand anything.
One of your own commandments says to keep
      the sabbath holy.
The Sabbath is on Saturday, NOT SUNDAY.
Your own church changed that day,
you are now ALL SINNERS because
you have blindly followed the "church" and not the "Commandments".

There is an awful lot of stuff in your little black book about
      being deceived.
      Start with that one,
i could name hundreds more, but i dont see the point.

You are in fact, blind little sheep.
I am sure Jesus would be thrilled with idiots
ranting on about who is, and who is NOT a good Christian.

The fact that you think you have the right to "judge"
automatically disqualifies you as a christian.

Go say a few "hail Marys" and "Our fathers"
drop a five spot in the plate, and all is forgiven.
      Hypocrites.

      AMEN, Jack!

But' most of the supposed Catholics on here who say they are voting for Obamanation, pretty well have demonstarted that they really are even a religious or God fearing bunch, let alone Catholic! They want to vote for the socialist/communist that LIED to them four years ago and continues to do so, who is dismantling manufacturing in this country, sympathizes with Muslims who are at war with us mostly because the believe his lies about caring for the poor and middle class! What BS. He is a habitual liar and the lemmings that continue to believe his rhetoric deserve what they will get if he is allowed 4 more years to destroy this country further.
