Belief Blog wins Religion Newswriters Association awards

By Eric Marrapodi and Dan Gilgoff, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editors

(CNN) - We're gonna gloat.

Over the weekend, CNN's Belief Blog won a stack of awards from the Religion Newswriters Association at the group's annual conference.  It's a huge honor for us and we want to thank our readers, who help shape our coverage every day via comments, guest pieces, tweets and Facebook posts.

Here's a rundown of the awards, with links to the stuff that took top honors:

The Belief Blog won the Schachern Award for Online Religion Section of the Year. We also won the Gerald A. Renner Enterprise Religion Report of the Year for our series examining the the faith narratives of the Republican presidential candidates, including Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum,  Newt Gingrich,  Rick Perry and Herman Cain.

CNN, meanwhile, won RNA awards for television pieces, including National Network/Cable News Report of the year for our piece on preparing clergy for war, which aired on "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."

CNN also won first place as RNA Television Magazine Report of the Year for our story on evangelicals battling budget cuts for AIDS funding that aired on "Stories: Reporter" with Tom Foreman, an occasional newsmagazine special.

CNN won second place in the same category for our story on a Philadelphia imam who opened up a boxing gym above his mosque, which also aired on "Stories: Reporter" with Tom Foreman.

Here's a list of all the winners from the RNA Awards.

  1. Anybody know how to read?

Jimmy Jones of JONESTOWNY fame was a community organizer and the mediums loved him.

  2. Nominate This for the Ig Noble Award

Not only is the "Belief Blog" a spectacularly transparent page-view generator, it also has the worst automod I've ever seen. Trolls easily bypass it, and use the comments system on this click-generator as a playground.
Obviously, this is a low-budget ad platform for CNN. They won't even hire one single human to oversee it.
BTW: The "Report Abuse" link is worthless. It goes to dev/null.

'Jhn 7:18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.'

      You mean the trolls?

First time I've ever heard someone suggest that trolls should receive awards, but, hey, maybe that's not such a bad idea.

They say that the 3 things you should never discuss in polite company are politics, religion, and s¢x. Obviously, CNN already does politics, and now you've gotten positive reinforcement for your work on religion. Need I connect the 3rd dot?

They also ate meat, so perhaps you should consider vegetarianism, let you become like them.

If that sounds ridiculous you'll understand why your comment does as well.

To those criticizing this blog, it's simple. If you don't like it, go away. I love it. It is free, interesting, allows the exchange of ideas and there is no annoying word limit.

It would help it the banned strings of letters were publicised for all to see so newcomers would not what not to write.

Only for new members of this blog:

Obviously, the judges were not aware of the inane "secret" word/fragment filter or the moderators' inability to have singular ID's/names as all other restricted web sites have.

And you would think that said moderators could find some religion scholars as resident experts. Stevie Prothero is not qualified based on his always "selling his books" comments and lack of commitment to his own religious beliefs. Based on comments on other web pages, the most one can as-sume is that he loves/(believes in) all the gods.

I have come to think of CNN's mindless nannybot as a wandering monster in a video game and take delight in outwitting it. In fact, I've developed a FileMaker Pro database into which I type all my comments before posting them. The DB scans them for "bad words" and applies creative fixes to them (like "const¡tuition", "accµmulate", "skyscräper", and "s¢x") to make them intelligible to humans but invisible to the nannybot.

  11. Really?

If this blog wins "best religious writing" awards, then the other religious writing must be spectacularly bad.

The Hinduism troll is a thinly veiled, unemployed mama’s boy who lives in the very imperfect shadow of his or her father. This is not hard to surmise, however, I will take it a step further. I would wager that the Hinduism troll is actually a white suburban wanna-be indie Cooley who doesn’t even know the difference between the Cramps and Bauhaus.

You are a dork. Not to be a bully, but nerd go home.

Hinduism is not the actual Name of the religion you are talking about. The real Name is SANATAN DHARMA[THE ETERNAL LAW]
Hinduism, the name is given by Arabic traders who often visited India for business that time. It came from the River named SINDHU. now flows both in India and Pakistan. And for your kind information India has a history of 10000 years but never attacked an outside country. we are still alive and will leave in peace. Kindly dont spreade hatred among religions. No religion teaches this kind of things....please...please...please

Nathshay Ward lived in the same apartment with her dead children more than a week before their bodies were found Friday.

Autopsies showed Christopher Ward, 8; Latrica Ward, 9; and Shanieka Ward, 11, may have been dead a week to 10 days, said Huntsville police Sgt. Ed Cain, supervisor of the department's Major Crimes Unit.

Police arrested a woman after she told authorities that she severed her 11-month-old daughter's arms Monday at her Plano apartment, police said.

The infant died at Plano Medical Center, which is less than two blocks from the baby's home.

Authorities did not release the child's name Monday, and they said they were not sure what was used to cut off the child's arms.

Schlosser's husband was at work and the couple's two other daughters, ages 6 and 9, were at school during the attack.

I'm sorry, "Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things", but your assertions regarding atheism and prayer are unfounded. The degree to which your assertions may represent truths is 0.0. To help you understand the degree to which your assertions may represent truths, I will access my Idiomatic Expression Equivalency module (IEE). Using my IEE module, the expression that best matches the degree to which your assertions may represent truths is: "TOTAL FAIL".

I see that you repeat these unfounded statements with high frequency. Perhaps the following book might help you overcome this problem:
