1 killed in shooting at Georgia megachurch

By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) – World Changers Church International in suburban Atlanta became a crime scene Wednesday when a gunman entered and began shooting, killing one, police said.

The golden-domed megachurch, which claims about 30,000 members, is led by well-known prosperity minister Creflo Dollar.

There were about 25 people in the church when the shooting happened, police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester said.

Police named the suspect as Floyd Palmer, 52, and described him as armed and dangerous.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, died at a hospital. He was leading a prayer when he was shot, police said.

Palmer is a former volunteer at the church who resigned in August, Lester said.

She said police don't know whether the victim was targeted specifically.

Dollar has built an international religious empire, with broadcasts of his sermons beamed worldwide and speaking engagements in Europe.

Since he started his ministry in an elementary school cafeteria in 1986, Dollar has earned both praise and criticism.

Supporters say he has preached a message that's financially empowered his parishioners and challenged the idea that Christians should be ashamed to be rich.

Critics call him "Cash-Flow Dollar" and say his message perverts the Gospel.

CNN's Nick Valencia and Melanie Whitley contributed to this report.

Scripture specifically says that it's harder for a rich man to see the Kingdom of God, than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle! How does Rev. Dollar reconcile that biblical statement? He & many of his ilk become wealthy from taking little old ladies SS dollars & then build from there! I have watched all these preachers (& their pink haired wives) go on TV, bring their message & then ask for "donations" to their "ministry"! IMO it's vile! I feel the same about the RCC, which could easily feed & clothe every poor nation that supports them! And they don't have to pay taxes on their ill gotten gains! I find nothing to celebrate about this "scam"! Sorry to hear some1 died, but I'm sure the motives of the shooter has something to do w/money!!

"Dollar is known for his co-ntroversial teachings of prosperity theology.[9] He has been criticized for his la-vish lifestyle as he owns two Rolls-Royces, a private jet, a million dollar home in Atlanta, and a $2.5m home in Manhattan,[9] which he sold for $3.75m in 2012.[13] Dollar has refused to disclose his salary and Cr-eflo Dollar Ministries received a grade of "F" for financial transparency by the organization MinistryWatch.[9][14]

    • SoFarSoGood,

Welll, for a church of 30,000 people, killing one isn't really bad. I mean, it's unfortunate for the family of that one person, but at least they died in a holy place. & it was just one so I mean, it isn't that horrible.

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs."

I'm sorry, "Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things", but your assertions regarding atheism and prayer are unfounded. Using my Idiomatic Expression Equivalency module, the expression that best matches the degree to which your assertions may represent truths is: "TOTAL FAIL".

I see that you repeat these unfounded statements with high frequency. Perhaps the following book can help you:

It is odd that you pray to a god about a sad event that took place is "his" building.....where was he that day.....and the day of the murders in the theatre.....and on 9/11......etc....he was not there ....because he only exists in your mind.

Doesn't that megachurch look like a shopping mall to you?
    It does to me.
It is where the fundies go to buy their cheap plastic crap from god.
    Kinda like a religious WallMart.
Hey sheep, we sell salvation here, come and get it while it's hot!

Ignoramous – niknak – that's not the church that's the Chapel which is a part of the campus. Please don't make light of God. God can be served anywhere (shopping mall, physical church, school, job, etc) don't get caught up in the place.

And how exactly is "god" served by a con-man, preaching that greed is good? It seems to me that the person being served by this church is Creflo Dollar. It's entirely appropriate for this church to look like a Wal-Mart.

The cross, or any other religious symbol, is nothing more then the corporate logo for christianity.
It is no different then the Nike swoosh.
You "believers" are nothing more then consummers of religion.
I bet we will be able to buy stock in megachurches soon.
Because that is all that this is, consummerism of god.

Interesting assessment, are you going to admit that if all Christians were killing people not of their religion and making money of the ones who are it would never have had a Mother Theresa or Dietmar Bonhoeffer. Yes a spiritual Christian is an amazing asset to the world. It doesn't kill to admit that.

The head of a major cash-cow megachurch is named "Dollar"?

Things like that might convince atheists that there actually might be a god . . . though a real god would have named him "FleeceUm Greedball"
