My Take: Muslims must engage politically, look outside themselves

Editor's Note: Imam Khalid Latif is a chaplain for New York University and executive director of the school's Islamic Center.

By Khalid Latif, Special to CNN

My wife and I were on our way into Bed, Bath and Beyond in late August when I decided to check my office voicemail from my cell phone. I told her I'd meet her inside. When I did, she asked whether I had any messages.

"Just one,” I told her. “I was asked to deliver an invocation at this year's Republican National Convention." She responded with a smile on her face, "Of course you were," and then showed me the pillows she’d selected.

I didn't get a chance to decide whether I would accept the invitation, as Hurricane Isaac changed the RNC schedule and made the decision for me. But before the impending storm blew me off the schedule, I sought advice from friends and colleagues. What were the implications of my participating at the RNC? Would it make sense?

One conservative, evangelical Republican friend told me that it would have been a great way to start a conversation with members of his party who are fed up with the current platform and, amongst other things, the party’s highly anti-Muslim and Islamophobic rhetoric. Now, it seemed, that conversation wouldn't happen.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

But I couldn't understand why it must take a Muslim standing on an RNC stage to get people talking. Is that really the only way a Muslim voice can be heard in the political arena? Realistically, it's not. The other options just require more time, strategy and patience.

Like all other citizens, American Muslims can be heard through our right to vote. We, as a community, can amplify our voice by building coalitions more broadly with other groups. And we can speak the loudest by encouraging our best and brightest to be a part of the system.

Most American Muslims aren't hearing a discourse that tells them to be civically engaged on a local or grassroots level, which is a huge problem. The presidential election is not the only election that takes place in our country; the impact that one can have on local communities is just as important.

We are starting to get this. In comparison to 10 years ago, today we see more Muslim mayors, city council members and commissioners, law enforcement agents, policymakers and others. But there is still a long way to go. Refraining from being part of the process really isn't an option anymore.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In deciding who to work with or which candidate to support on any level, be it local or national, it's important to be informed beyond one's own needs. Most Muslims keep from building relationships with other groups unless there is some direct impact on us.

We don't stand up for others’ rights as well as we should. Then, when we want others to be there for us and validate our community, we don't get what we need so readily because we weren’t there for their communities or still don’t understand issues beyond our own.

Do you know what conversations are taking place in your local government? Decisions are being made that will affect people who live in your town, your city, your state, your entire country.

If the Muslim community wants people to stand with us when a hateful person protests the building of our mosques, we need to stand with them at their time of need, or even at times when there is no pressing need at all. The myopic perspective that keeps us from thinking strategically and, more importantly, humanely, needs to go.

I watched the presidential debates at the Islamic Center at New York University, where I was joined by my students and community members. I watched so that I could be better informed of the candidates' stances on all issues - including the ones that affect me directly and those that touch people around me.

I will keep telling my students, whom I encouraged to register to vote, that they must think beyond the presidential election and get involved locally. New York City will elect a new mayor next year, along with many other officials, and they should be a part of that process, too.

And I will keep telling them that civic engagement is not just about having your voice heard. It's also about having confidence that you have something to offer that will make society better.

My students, like many other American Muslims, can and should help the growth and development of our country. The time is here for them to see not only how their being Muslim benefits them individually but also how their being Muslim benefits the world around them.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Khalid Latif.

Christian Arabs are very different from Muslim Arabs. With some exceptions, Christians in comparison to Muslims melt into western societies, they are more productive and peaceful than Muslims. As opposed to any other religion, devout Muslims and Islamic clerics are the most perverse, violent, intolerant, irrational and discriminatory people, these guys are the ones who imposed by force their satanic Islamic religion on their believers. I wish Muslims open their eyes and have the courage to convert to Christianity.

Just as Protestants had to reject the KKK as anti-Christian in the 1920s, Muslims have to reject militants as anti-Islamic today. So far, that is not happening. The primary leader of militants was Osama bin Laden. He said "We worship death..." Anyone who worships death by advocating violent jihad is an enemy of Allah, The Awesome One.

Taking a life is a sin and a crime, nothing will change unless they teach this throughout Islam. God doesn't tell people to kill other people, He made them all, and judgement belongs to Him.

You can't be muslim and engage in politics...read the Koran. They leave leadership to their mullahs and a puppet spokes person like they have in Iran. With the rise if the muslim brotherhood will will see more and more 'Irans' being formed

God in Quran says, (holy Islamic scripture)

“They even attribute to Him sons and daughters, without any knowledge. Be He glorified. He is the Most High, far above their claims.” Quran [6:100]

“The example of Jesus, as far as GOD is concerned, is the same as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him, "Be," and he was.” Quran [3:59]

‘They said, "You have to be Jewish or Christian, to be guided." Say, "We follow the religion of Abraham – monotheism – he never was an idol worshiper." [2:135]

“Proclaim, He is the One and only GOD. The Absolute GOD. Never did He beget. Nor was He begotten. None equals Him." [112:1]

The Messiah, son of Mary is no more than a messenger like the messengers before him, and his mother was a saint. Both of them used to eat the food. Note how we explain the revelations for them, and note how they still deviate! [5:75]

It does not befit God that He begets a son, be He glorified. To have anything done, He simply says to it, "Be," and it is. [19:35]

“No soul can carry the sins of another soul. If a soul that is loaded with sins implores another to bear part of its load, no other soul can carry any part of it, even if they were related. ... [35:18]

O people, here is a parable that you must ponder carefully: the idols you set up beside God can never create a fly, even if they banded together to do so. Furthermore, if the fly steals anything from them, they cannot recover it; weak is the pursuer and the pursued. [22:73]

They do not value God as He should be valued. God is the Most Powerful, the Almighty.[22:74]

If you obey the majority of people on earth, they will divert you from the path of God. They follow only conjecture; they only guess. [Quran 6:116]

“There shall be no compulsion in religion: the right way is now distinct from the wrong way. Anyone who denounces the devil and believes in God has grasped the strongest bond; one that never breaks. God is Hearer, Omniscient.” [2:256]

“God: there is no other god besides Him, the Living, the Eternal. Never a moment of unawareness or slumber overtakes Him. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Who could intercede with Him, except in accordance with His will? He knows their past, and their future. No one attains any knowledge, except as He wills. His dominion encompasses the heavens and the earth, and ruling them never burdens Him. He is the Most High, the Great.” [2:255]

This is my experience... Thank you.

    MY personal testimony.
A thought to consider without an ego response

I Accepted Jesus christ as my lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners. Even once we are saved by christs merciful grace we will still experience adversity to mold us to adhering to the truth.
We will slip... But not fall of the ship ...carrying us onward to perfection in christs grace.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from some other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith ....above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

Read Ecclesiastes. Read romans or corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are by faith above reason in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

    my testimony

    Romans 10:9

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved
Last eve I passed beside a blacksmith’s door,
    And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime;
The, looking in, I saw upon the floor
Old hammers, worn with beating years of time.
“How many anvils have you had,” said I,
“To wear and batter all these hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he, and then with twinkling eye,
“The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.”
And so, thought I, the anvil of God’s Word,
    For ages skeptic blows have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed – the hammers gone.

As we have a Muslim in office, I believe Muslims have stepped up enough in our politics. What do they want next? Sharia law? Public beheadings? Our women to wear total coverings and to be treated like dogs? A camel in every garage?

No, I think we can do with a lot LESS Muslims engaging in US politics...

I have no problem with people of any religion or nationality coming to the USA aslong as the are willing to come legally, be willing and able to support themselves, obey our laws and not try to nullify them in favor of the laws they left behind. We are for one nation, one flag and one language. These is what unites a nation.

I have to say, to those people who came here from Islamic countries and are faithful...this is a country of participation. If you aren't working to improve, you are in the way. One way to help is to participate. If you don't like it, if it isn't your cup of tea. No problem, the plane flies both ways. Most of us (you can see we have our own brand of religious extremism), don't care what your religion is. Most Americans are pretty nice people. If you come here, be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. We have work to do. If you are lazy and whining suits you better, then get out of the way. If you don't want to join in, get out of the way. If you don't like our system, get out of the way. I would give the same message to Christians, Jews, Buddhists and the Church of the Coffee Pot.

Mitt Romney is a Mormon who believes that there is more than one god and that MEN can become gods of other worlds. I know this sounds ridiculous, but this is what the Mormon religion teaches! This is not taught in the Holy Bible. This is only taught in Joseph Smith's Book of Mormon. This religion is not Christian. If you do not like Obama and you find Romney's religious belief's strange and anti-Christian, you don't need to stay home on election day. WRITE-IN on your ballot, "Jesus Christ". By their fruits ye shall know them. The people of Mass., know Mitt Romney when he was Governor of that state. Why is it that the people of Mass., do NOT favor him in this election? Could it be they know what a horrible Governor he was for their state? Mass., ranked 48th in Job growth while he served as Governor! There are only 50 states! So much for someone who claims to be a job creator. This man talks out of both sides of his mouth and will say anything to get elected. Don't vote for this liar. WRITE-IN on your ballot, "Jesus Christ".

What is wrong with you people? Don't you believe in turning the other cheek? What difference does it make what religion someone follows? If you are correct, then eternity will be populated only by people of your own faith. In the meantime, life is short. Be good to one another. Its what Jesus would do.

Why use the term American Muslim? I dont see anyone calling folks American Jews, Americans Catholics, or American Mormons? Why do Muslims separate themselves? I do not understand. It sounds like they want to be called something other than just Americans. Why?

I personally do not have a problem.....you've presumably heard of "African Americans......"Blacks".....they did not choose this term indiscriminately! Frankly, I believe that anyone who is a citizen of this country SHOULD FORGET their race and first and foremost identify themselves AS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN!

If the US today were a majority Muslim, what would the Muslims living in the US today do to protect freedom of religion and press? Would they maintain the US strong relationship with Israel, the only democratic country in the Middle East? Would they be active in curtailing the influence of extremists who oppose democracy, want to impose Sharia, and are promote attacks on Jews? Today the US is not a majority Muslim. But Muslims living in the US could and should be more visible in their efforts to promote democracy, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, protection of Israel, and protection of the Jewish and Coptic communities around the world. They cannot be silent on these issues.

Protection of Israel..ARE YOU KIDDING? Do you even know how much MONEY in total the United States gives to Israel?? Most Americans voting are not caring about anything more than "their own backyard".....They should be looking at where the money goes that our government gives away to Israel! When the U.S. gives money /financial assistance to any other country.. they have to account for how they spend it, but NOT ISRAEL! It is not America's responsibility to protect any other country AND there is no reason for every country on earth to be a democracy!! Muslims DO NOT want to impose Shari'a Law on the U.S.A. And why should we spend trillions of dollars,YES trillions on ISRAEL? In fact, the U.S. A. gives more money to Israel than any other country we give money to. And, while other countries we give financial assistance to MUST ACCOUNT for how they spend this money, ISRAEL DOES NOT! You may check these facts by reading the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs! You need to get your facts straight!
