Anti-Obama mail piece: ‘We are no longer a Christian nation’

By Peter Hamby, CNN Political Reporter

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – Focus on the Family, the Colorado-based social conservative organization founded by evangelical author and radio host James Dobson, is targeting Iowa voters with a mailing that quotes President Obama as saying “we are no longer a Christian nation.”

The fold-out brochure, which landed in Iowa mailboxes last week and was provided to CNN by a Des Moines-area voter, draws a series of contrasts between Obama and Mitt Romney on the issues of abortion, same-sex marriage and insurance coverage for contraception.

See the mailer here and here.

    Three cheers for the first amendment!

    Amendment I

    Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;

    Mr. President:

    “Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation – at least not just,” Obama said. “We are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation and a Buddhist nation and a Hindu nation and a nation of non-believers.”

    These two statements look entirely consistent to me.

    I wonder if CitizenLink received a little sumpthin' sumpthin' from one of the Romney SuperPACs like Franklin Graham and the BGEA presumably did. This has Mark DeMoss' fingerprints all over it.

    Remember him:
    Can Mitt Romney’s evangelical ambassador seal the deal before Election Day?
    http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/09/01/can-mitt-romneys-evangelical-ambassador-seal-the-deal-before-election-day/

    There isn't a similarly obvious set of connections between Mark DeMoss and James Dobson as with Franklin Graham but this is straight out of the dirty tricks playbook.

    Oh the doom and gloom of the Christians really is a heavy burden to keep around, don't you think? You Christians stay where you are and we'll move forward BUT if you try in anyway to stop our progress to better mankind we're going to shove you so far underground you'll be shaking hands with your devil.

      TheVocalAtheist.........this comes from an atheist who sits on a religious blog for fun. Wow, you really got it going on. Fighting a God you can't see and don't believe in. I can really tell you have moved forward. Talk about doom and gloom! "BUT you try in anyway to stop our progress to better mankind we're going to shove you so far underground you'll be shaking hands with your devil." Better tell that one to Sandy, looks like she's pretty well put a huge roadblock in man's progress in her area. Atheists are so tough! HA!

      @AtheistHunter

      Whoa there Tarzan! I don't come here for fun, its more like punishment from the likes of people who think like you. I sincerely amazed at the intolerance, the ignorance and finally the outright blatant stupidity and inhumanity that you people adhere to. You're a dangerous lot and need to be put in check. I report to the truth and reality daily about the underpinnings of this radical cult and we're slowly chipping away at your agenda. It's not too far off there Sparky. Go take your nap now and listen to your faith healer on your am transistor, bye!

      TheVocalAtheist............Pegged you huh? Why would you care enough to search out a religion blog if religion doesn't control you? You're just a runner and been running a long time from what insight tells me. Yes we're dangerous to your baby killing, your se xual deviance, and your control of our right to serve our God. No buddy, you don't have a chance in hades to chip away at anything that is God's will. That is you eating from the forbidden fruit of deception. You control absolutely nothing that God does not allow you to control. You have no power over anything that God does not allow you to have power over. You own nothing that God has not allowed you to own. He allows you the air you breath. It's your agenda that you're fighting for and you are fighting a losing battle buddy! The story was written thousands of years ago and your agenda fails! If God wants to he will blow your agenda away with a Sandy with a mere thought. God is in control of everything and the only power of choice that you have was given to you by God. It is called free will. He will let you destroy yourself if you so choose. That's what you're doing and that's all you're doing.

      @AtheistHunter

      Hellfire and brimstone! You don't know a thing about me there Frankenstorm. There was no God, there is no God and there will never be a God. You live in a delusional world of Adam and Eve, Noah's Ark, Young Earth and oh my goodness the list goes on forever. Your imaginary God kills children, ra*pes and demeans women, enslaves races and always dwells in the past with a hopeful eye towards some make believe fairy tale wonderland where everything is majestically boring and all this AFTER your physical body is dead. You're a moron, period.

  3. George Plunkett

    The whole "Christian Nation" thing is a very recent lie. Older generations of Americans never would have said that, and most of the Founding Fathers sure didn't say it.

    Christians are into revisionist history lies, which go with their "atheism is a religion" lies and their "atheism is a faith" lies" and "atheists are mad at god" lies. And my only question is, why is a group who is so certain they are the source of morality also a group who is so happy to pervert the truth?

    October 31, 2012 at 12:55 pm |

      9 “Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. 10 At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another. 11 Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. 12 Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. 14 This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

      Irrational, Fact an average of 171,000 Christians worldwide are martyred for their faith per year.

  5. Christianity and Islam is a mental disease- FACT

    Joseph

    We may never have been termed a Christian Nation, but this country's majority has been Christian. Christianity has been steadily declining, and Atheism has been steady increasing over the population. It's not hard to see that the more Christianity and its values decrease, that its directly proportional to how this country is falling into oblivion. If one can't see that, they are delusional at best.
    ...

    Yep what is the percentage of atheists? Christians are still a mass majority....yet they do not claim their proportionate share of the blame. This is classic from Christians....we call it scapegoating. Christians are the majority and based on your logic...Christians are responsible for the decline and fall of our great nation. How about manning up Christians and quit hiding behind those evil jews, blacks and atheists that you claim is responsible for everything. How about Christians stop using Hitler as their role model.

      @Atheist Hunter

      Your world is so tightly locked-up and intolerant to change you're a fossil. You long for some fantasy lifestyle ideology that never existed but only on television shows. I bet you have an air raid shelter filled with VHS tapes of Leave It To Beaver, The Life of Riley and Father Knows Best. A Bible filled with red circles around certain verses sits on your artillery chest along side boxes of Twinkies and orange pop as the rantings of your local evangelical bleed in and out of reception on your am transistor radio. Ah yes, the good old days...

      October 31, 2012 at 12:49 pm |
    • Atheist Hunter

      TheVocalAtheist.............great analysis! Give yourself a star! I am tightly locked up in my beliefs and my intolerance for lawlessness will not change! You're the man! But you're a little off on the television show thing. There was no TV when the Bible was written. Sorry, but you're like way off there! No I don't need an air raid shelter, I'm sheltered under the wings of God almighty. You know Psalm 91. Although if I did those are some good wholesome shows I would watch. The bible with the red circles around certain verses sits at my bedside where I read it everynight. Not much in to twinkies and orange pops, but I do listen to faith radio. Let's see, I'll give you a 75, that's passing. Maybe after the rapture you could do your predictions on the street for a piece of bread or something. Good luck with it!

    Which is this;
    We can't stand the fact that the president is part black, we hate non whites and non christians and we want this to be a lilly white country based on the teachings of the bible, with everyone home schooling their kids without science.

      niknak........and I would have a lot more respect for atheists if they would just come out and say what they really feel which is this; we can't stand the fact that Christians don't butt out and let our lawless president lead us, and if not then we call you racists accuse you of hate if you dare voice your beliefs, only atheists and liberals are allowed to do that, and we want this to be a evil, dark, and demonic, drug, se x, and abuse crazed country based on our narcissistic desires and whims and lets us have our disgusting displays of immorality in the streets in front of the children, let us commit sodomy publicly for your children to view, let us kill the babies that we create during our vile acts of uncontrolled lawlessness because they get in the way of our fun, and if you don't like it we will take away all your rights, force our evil into the schools so that your children become evil with us and then if you don't like it we will beat you to death in your churches. Obama lets us do anything that is evil so let us have Obama! Be careful what you wish for!

      Thats right fundies, your "rupture" is just around the corner.
      So you won't be needing any of those things you own, like your car, or house or money.

      @Niknak
      The Rupture is a central part of SubGenius theology.
      On X-Day, when the Elder Gods come to harvest the souls of humanity, the colons of all SubGenii will rupture, causing the death of their corporeal bodies.
      Their souls will then be whisked away on the Escape Vessel of the S.ex Goddesses.

      Hey Doc, that sounds like a great theme for a sci fi movie!
      You should write a screen play and sell it to MGM and retire early.
      Mix in some fundie folklore and viola, and the sheep will flock to the octo-plex and make you millions.
      This scam works every Sunday at the fundie mega-churches, so why not for you too?

      October 31, 2012 at 10:43 am |
    • Doc Vestibule

      I didn't make it up!
      The Church of the Subgenius is quite real.

      Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

      An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

      The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs.

    It is so sad to see this nation being torn apart by a people who are so scared of the term Christian Nation. And yet these same people had no problem in asking and expecting help from a church. Either way this part of history was written in the Bible by God. As far as the Bible God wrote it through people. This part of history was foretold in the Bible. Christianity has withstood many people and over 2,000 years ago and will continue to withstand persecution. This is just a way for Evil to get the people to look at government as their messiah. If this is how people will be deceived that is between them and the Creator God.

      What does Article VI, Section 3 of the US Constîtution say? What does Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli say?

      Now, please post the exact sections of your bible that describe our current history. Specifically, I want the book, chapter, and verses where your bible describes the formation of the United States, and how the founding fathers used the concepts from the age of reason and the age of enlightenment to formulate our government.

      I'll wait here for you.

      Do you know why people don't like the term "christian nation"? Because the United States is not a christian nation. We never were. We are a secular nation, where people of many different beliefs – even no belief – are free to live their lives without fear of religious persecution. That has always been a foundation of our freedom, and when someone tries to create artificial outrage in an effort to undermine that freedom, of course we're offended and angry.

      As far as the Bible God wrote it through people.
      ----–
      That is what the people who wrote it told us. Conflict of interest? If it's the definitive word of God, I wonder why God didn't commission individuals in every culture on earth to write the same words? Why only give it to people in the middle east? God created heaven and earth, but couldn't scratch out a few words in a book and give to all mankind so there'd be no question who's word it is?

    When christianity ruled this country, we were killing people for being "witches". We need to get back to that.

    We've never been a "Christian nation". The pilgrims came here to escape persecution from "Christians".
    The Treaty of Tripoli clearly spells out that the founders did no think it was founded on ANY religion.

    BTW, thank you Jeebus for all the people you killed, and the 50 billion + damage in the hurricane. That'll teach 'em.

    "We are no longer a Christian nation."

    BRAVO !!!

    And the reasons why:

    Recognizing the flaws, follies and frauds in the foundations of Islam, Judaism and Christianity, the "bowers", kneelers" and "pew peasants" are converging these religions into some simple rules of life. No koran, bible, clerics, nuns, monks, imams, evangelicals, ayatollahs, rabbis, professors of religion or priests needed or desired.

    Ditto for houses of "worthless worship" aka mosques, churches, basilicas, cathedrals, temples and synagogues.

    • 0G-No gods, ghosts, goblins or ghouls

      Josh, correlation does not equal causation. Increased polarization, driven in part by increased religious fundamentalism, is more likely to be the cause of the USA's problems than atheism – in my opinion, of course.

    • tallulah13

      Actually, no, Joseph. You can easily trace the decline of this country to personal greed and to slashed funding to education. And if you trace the worst offenders in those two categories, you will find that they are often the very ones waving a bible and complaining because this is no longer a christian nation.

  20. Tom, Tom, the Other One

    And moreover, given the increasing diversity of America's populations, the dangers of sectarianism are greater than ever. Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation. At least not just. We are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, and a Buddhist nation, and a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.

    And even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools? Would it be James Dobson's, or Al Sharpton's? Which passages of Scripture should guide our public policy? Should we go with Leviticus, which suggests slavery is OK and that eating shellfish is an abomination? Or we could go with Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith. Or should we just stick to the Sermon on the Mount - a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application? We - so, before we get carried away, let's read our Bibles now. Folks haven't been reading their Bible.

    I think Obama gets it. And he seems to acknowledge that nonbelievers have an equal share in America. I'm proud I voted for the man yesterday.

      The entire paradigm of "getting guidance" from the Bible ignores the historical process that the "law" GOT there in the first place. The ONLY reason anything is IN the Bible in the first place is because HUMAN wrote the texts, and appropriated ALREADY extant customs and laws from their culture, and wrote them in. Religion RECEIVED law from culture. Culture NEVER once "received" law from religion. If religious laws were all culturally relative at their reception/inception, there is NOT ONE reason 2500 year old culture has to be made absolute, and non-relative at this late date. It's simply ignorance of the historical process.
