My Take: What all those Jesus jokes tell us

Editor’s note: Edward J. Blum is a historian of race and religion at San Diego State University. Paul Harvey is a history professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and runs the blog Religion in AmericanHistory. They co-authored “The Color of Christ: The Son of God and the Saga of Race in America.”

By Edward J. Blum and Paul Harvey, Special to CNN

Did you ever hear the one about Jesus being Mexican? Well, he was bilingual; he was constantly harassed by the government; and his first name was Jesus.

Or, perhaps Jesus was Irish? He loved a good story; he never kept a steady job; and his last request was for a drink.

Or maybe it’s possible that Jesus was Californian? He never cut his hair; he was always walking around barefoot; and he started a new religion.

You may not have heard these Jesus jokes, but you’ve heard others. They represent a comedic trend that has animated the United States since the 1970s. More and more comedy gimmicks hit on Jesus, his ethnicity and his relationship to politics. Laughing with (and at) the Lord is now fodder for major motion pictures, barroom comedy tours, graphic novels, t-shirts and bumper stickers.

How is it that a figure sacred to so many Americans has become the punch line of so many jokes? And why is it acceptable to poke fun at Jesus when other sacred figures are deemed off limits or there is hell to pay for mocking them?

The explanations are as numerous as the laughs.

Immigration shifts from the 1960s changed the ethnic and religious faces of the country so no tradition dominates today. The Christian right made such a moral spectacle of itself that it practically begged to be mocked. The emergence of “spiritual, but not religious” sensibilities left many Americans willing to denounce or laugh about traditional faith. The public rise of agnosticism, atheism, and secularism led to aggressive mockery as a form of persuasion.

If we pause to consider why we’re laughing, we find that the comic bits delve into some of our thorniest and unresolved problems. The jokes reveal much more about us than they do Jesus. They speak to how our society has changed, how it hasn’t, and what we’re obsessed with.

The first public jokes about Jesus were heard in the 1970s. There had been religious jokes before this, but none about Jesus had become widely popular because organized Christianity held such authority. As the economic recession and problems of urban decay collided with civil rights exhaustion and new immigration, however, some Jesus jokes emerged.

Archie Bunker on “All in the Family” was the white racist and misogynist you loved to hate and hated to love. On one occasion, his son-in-law challenged Bunker’s rampant anti-Semitism with the claim, "Jesus was Jewish." Archie shot back immediately: "Only on his mother's side."

The “All in the Family” spin off “Good Times” featured a black family that lives in an inner-city housing project, probably Chicago's infamous Cabrini Green. On the show's second episode, the oldest son J. J. astounded everyone by painting Jesus as black. The younger son loves it, and says he learned all about Christ’s blackness from the local Nation of Islam.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

As the family debates whether this black Jesus should be hung on the wall in place of their white Jesus, they “miraculously” receive $140 from the Internal Revenue Service. Feeling blessed, the family placed the painting on its living room wall, and the elated J. J. shouted his tagline, "Dyno-mite!”

From the 1980s to the present, the number of prominent Jesus jokes has multiplied like loaves and fishes:

• In “Talladega Nights,” Ricky Bobby and his family debated which Jesus to pray to (“baby Jesus in golden fleece diapers,” “grown-up Jesus,” “ninja Jesus”). Their overall hope is that Jesus will help them continue their extravagant lifestyle.

• “South Park” featured Jesus as a weak-kneed host of a local talk show who boxes the devil.

• “Family Guy” had Jesus perform magic tricks that wowed his ancient audience.

• “The Colbert Report” placed a gun in Christ’s hand and had him defend conservatives against the liberal “War on Easter.”

• “Saturday Night Live” let Jesus chastise Tim Tebow for using the Lord’s name in vain and ended the bit by declaring that the Mormons have it right.

One unforgettable scene in the rather forgettable recent film “21 Jump Street” may explain why Jesus has become such a joke.

Before Jonah Hill’s character returns to high school as an undercover cop, he prays to a small, crucified “Korean Jesus.” Down on his knees, he says: “Hey Korean Jesus, I don’t know if you only cater to Korean Christians or if you even exist, no offense. I’m just really freaked out about going back to high school. It was just so f***ing hard the first time. … I just really don’t want to f*** this up. Sorry for swearing so much. The end? I don’t really know how to end the prayer.”

The hilarity of the moment only makes sense in our time. Hill's character is unchurched and agnostic, but wants spiritual power to guide him. We can laugh at how agnosticism and being “spiritual, but not religious,” leave him uncertain of what to say, how to say it, and even how to end.

We can also laugh at how ethnic factors color his approach. By wondering if Korean Jesus cares only about Korean problems, Hill pokes fun at the issue which was made a media spectacle in 2008, when the Rev. Jeremiah Wright could be heard preaching that “Jesus was a poor black man” as part of his support for Barack Obama. What good is a God who only cares for those who look like him?

The Jesus jokes not only reveal how tangled our religious, racial, economic and political positions have become, but also how many outlets there are for the jokes. In these tense times, when presidential hopefuls point fingers at one another and families unfriend one another over political and cultural differences, laughing may be one way to talk about the problems without killing one another.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Edward J. Blum and Paul Harvey.

Derp, why do you believe that Jesus didn't exist?

(I get how you might believe that Jesus isn't God or that Jesus can't be God because God doesn't exist. I get that. But why do you believe that Jesus didn't exist?)

While I'm aware of no direct historical evidence that a man named Jesus (who was executed by the Romans) existed the indirect evidence is strong. In the early days of the Christianity movement, the Jewish and Roman leadership were trying to stop it. The most effective way to stop it would have been "you were all at Passover and clearly you remember there was no Jesus who died on a cross." That is, if the man didn't exist (and thus wasn't executed), the movement would have been quelled immediately. But it wasn't. The evidence is strong that a man named Jesus existed and was executed by the Romans.

Most people, save atheists, are born with immediate cognition of the divine, and the knowledge of right and wrong without the use of rational processes. When atheists speak, they lie, since lying is their native language, for they are liars, and the fathers of lies. Atheists are the weeds of humanity as stated by Jesus Christ in Matthew 13: 24-30 24, “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”

The parable of the Weeds explained in Matthew 13: 36- 43, “Then Jesus left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

Henry, provide a cite for you source of information that people are born believing in a god. If you can't, then it's not fact, it's just your opinion, based on nothing.

I'm sorry, "Henry", but your assertion regarding cognition at birth is unfounded. Using my Idiomatic Expression Equivalency module (IEE), the expression that best matches the degree to which your assertion may represent a truth is: "EPIC FAIL".

Henry, your post is a beautiful example of the stupidity of religion. It'll probably do more to advance atheism than any comment I could come up with. Keep up the good work for us, Henry, we appreciate it.

      @Hugo

The evidence seems to point to many, many prophets in Judea around the turn of the millennium claiming to be great prophets or messiahs. "Yeshua" was a common enough name and one a popular prophet might take on fairly readily. Jesus "existed" by the dozens or hundreds. Stories get molded together, as do the names, and we see urban legends spring up quite commonly--more so in a superst.ituous society like one who believes every other "prophet" on every other street corner is doing "miracles." It would be much more shocking if there wasn't a myth like the christian one given the circ.umstances. It's perfectly reasonable that the myth exists, but myths aren't fact and they don't prove anything except what we already know about human behavior and tendency to spectacular, self-important narrative.

I can always tell whenever I'm hitting truth, especially the kind of truth which can't be denied…

It's because either one of two things will always happen: 1) either the devil will rise up in someone and that person will start cursing and swearing for no good reason (as for me, I don't have to use curse words. I'm more intelligent than that). 2) or else some weak-minded and degenerate teenager who doesn't even have the balls or the courage to post under their own name will "hi-jack" someone else's name or my good name, and start posting a lot of degenerate garbage on the forum as though it was from someone else (as for me, I would never even post such garbage. I have better uses for my time. And if you think I did post such garbage – such as "blah, blah, blah" – then you're more gullible than you think)…

Like clockwork, it happens every single time...

    • I'm not a GOPer, nor do I play one on TV

The bible was not the first book to be printed in English.

      Wikipedia:

He [Caxton] wasted no time in setting up a printing press in Bruges, in collaboration with a Fleming, Colard Mansion, and the first book to be printed in English was produced in 1473: Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye, a translation by Caxton himself.

Wycliffe's translation of the bible precedes this (around 1382) but these were manuscripts. There is nothing to indicate that the bible was the 'first' book to be translated into English.

For once I would like to see the christian posters address the fact that their loving god and his son jesus simply ignored 66% of the population of this planet. The bible is a mythical book of stories written for men by men, as were the many other religious tomes. The Theogony for example you will find in the fantasy/myth section of the book store. The bible should be found in the comedy section; did you hear the one about jesus on a stick......

    • John not the Baptist

      @Anti-Chad
That is an intresting question, why couldn't an all powerful god not have knocked up a bunch of virgins in all parts of the world all at one time? Just think hunderds of jesus' running around doing his/their thing, changing water into sake, curing the pox in Africa, raising butchered Mayans from the dead, all those neat things he only did for a small group of jews. Why don't the depictions of jesus not have him with a large hooked semetic nose and I guess only someone like Heaven Sent would know if he got the ritual circu*mcision. The whole bible is a joke.

    The Jesus equation:

I'll create man and woman with original sin. Then I'm going to impregnate a woman with myself as her child, so that I can be born. Once I'm alive, I will kill myself as a sacrafice to myself, to save you from the sin that I originally condemned you to.

    Makes perfect sense!

The reason I think people make jokes about Jesus is, because it makes them feel better. Meaning that the truth about what the Bible teaches regarding sin, is defused or suppressed and therefore people can continue doing what they want. In spite of all debates about the Bible/Jesus, God love the World and He does not want anybody to leave this life; without having lived a life; reflecting what His Word says they should have lived. People don't want to believe in a God who tells them how they should/shouldn't live, so Jesus lets people choose what they want for themselves and yet when things go wrong in our lives we tend to blame Him for not just making us do the right thing. The end of our lives ends all debates and we finally receive the answer to the Greatest Debate since the beginning of time, "Is Heaven/Hell real? and is the Bible true cover-to-cover?"

Actually the reason is many of us were indoctrinated to think Jesus was god, now we know that is absurd and we knock him off his sacred pillar by joking about it and him.

    • Huebert

What you refer to as the "Greatest Debate" is not a debate at all. It is one side making a claim, god exist, and the other asking for evidence. So far the claimants have yet to do so.

JJ. That has to be some of the most tripe posted. You cit the babble as a source if information. You have to be deluded to think it is all true. Time and again, it has been shown to be nothing more than myth, yet you listen to folks who tell you you will be punishedi f you don't believe. You are petrified of death. You are so afraid of living, that you work for something you desparately want to believe: an afterlife. We all die, we all go to the same place; in the ground. There is no proof of life after death, and the pastors, and the bible are not proof. Live your life well, not for some "reward" after it. Sheesh. You also may want to look up Pascal's Wager while you are at it.

The concept of hell was invented to coerce those who didn't know any better into belief (or to at least conform to the church). Most of the major religions of the world were invented when our knowledge and understanding of the universe was much less than it is now. Back then, the threat of eternal punishment for dis-belief and questioning coupled with the promised reward of eternity in paradise for those who believed actually sounded reasonable. More and more people are waking up every day to the realization of just how silly this is.

Long before Jesus was born, the ancient book of Isaiah foretold how the earth would treat its savior: [ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. ] Mocking Jesus is nothing new. Inevitably, all of us will leave this world alone. When the audience is thinned to a few loving family members tearfully saying their goodbyes, no one is laughing at Jesus.

how the earth would treat its savior:
      ----–
If Jesus is the savior for all on earth, don't you find it at all curious why he wasn't available to all on earth? During his time, he interacted with a very small subset of humanity in the middle east. He had no interaction with a large number of human beings who lived in other places. Today, there are millions of humans on this earth who have no idea who Jesus is. Is he still their savior, even though they will never learn of him?

JohnP, anyone can make vague predictions about bad stuff happening and someone getting mistreated. Enough bad stuff happens over time that eventually those "predictions" are bound to have something resembling them happen. They have zero cred as "prophecies".

Either present specific dates inside the predictions and show how the predicted events then happened on those dates, or retract your claims of them being valid prophecy, since they are clearly a heap of steaming BS.

The whole premise of Christianity that the death of the son of god would have been any kind of "sacrifice" and was required to deal with "sin" is utter nonsense. This is a supposed omnipotent being that we are discussing. Christians, think this through a bit: how come your 'omnipotent' creature couldn't do all that supposed saving without the loony son sacrifice bit? And for that matter, how was it a sacrifice at all, when an omnipotent being could just pop up a replacement son any time it wants with less than a snap of its fingers? Pretty feeble god it is that you've made for yourself there. Give that some thought and maybe it will help you leave your delusions behind. You will remain a laughingstock otherwise, and the more you dwell in your silly delusion and ancient myths, instead of keeping up with advances in medicine and technology, the more America slips downward relative to the rest of the world in science and other fields.

Ask the questions. Break the chains. Join the movement. Be free of Christianity and other superstitions.

atheism has to be the most closed minded and anti-intellectual worldview ever created. It assumes that that a human being can know beyond a shadow of a doubt, based on hard empirical evidence, that God/Supernatural does not exist. First of all , this evidence doesn't exist, and even if it did, it would be impossible for a human being to fully comprehend anyways. Atheism is just like any other worldview in that we predispose what our belief is going to be. We start out with this hypothesis of God not existing, and then try to find whatever 'evidence' there might be to support the personal bias. And then ridicule anybody who holds a different view- can't forget that part. Agnosticism, or saying ' that there may be a God/supernatural but I don't have enough information to decide' is a perfectly legitimate position to hold. But Atheism is the most tunnel visioned and reactionary belief system out there that bases itself on ridiculing of other viewpoints rather than supporting its own

"...the priest, a parasitical variety of man who can exist only at the cost of every sound view of life, takes the name of God in vain: he calls that state of human society in which he himself determines the value of all things "the kingdom of God"; he calls the means whereby that state of affairs is attained "the will of God"; with cold-blooded cynicism he estimates all peoples, all ages and all individuals by the extent of their subservience or opposition to the power of the priestly order." – Nietzsche.

atheists have as much to prove as any religion does. For atheists to just assume that their position is the default is nothing but intellectual laziness

      1. Equating atheism with a belief in the non-existence of God:
eg: “Atheism is a religion” Ummm, no, really, it’s not!
Atheism is a religion like not collecting stamps is a hobby,
Atheism is a religion like bald is a hair color,
Atheism is a religion like off is a television channel

atheist: I don't believe in God

This is quite different to the assertion you are making about atheism: "I believe in the non-existence of God."

Cheesemaker- atheism and deism are completely different- as deism obviously assumes the existence of a Supreme Being. I'm not entirely sure why you're arguing with me here.

Doc Vestibule, i'm not even going bother reading that since you clearly just copied and pasted from somewhere

Nope- you're completely validating my point that atheists like yourself base their position more upon bashing on other people who actually believe in something (though you have no idea what I personally believe in so I don't know why you're being so presumptuous) than it is about disproving the existence of a God/Supreme Being/supernatural realm. Reason, logic, empiricism and the scientific method are the default gods of atheism, so the burden lies on the atheist to disprove the existence of a God. If you can't or don't bother doing that, then I have to assume that you are just taking the atheist position out of a reactionary dislike of religious people

there is no 'converting' to atheism. Atheism has no sacred text, no canon, no rituals. That doesn't mean they don't believe in things separate from a belief in God – but nothing is defined as orthodoxy.

People leave religion when their vision clears and they realize that faith in the immaterial is misplaced. Faith is a wonderful thing for those who cling to it. It is not necessary for happiness.

Agree with athiest freak, since the West has become more secular and athiesm, the West has declined considerable. Look at Victorian England (which was inventing new ideas and thoughts left and right, controlled 1/4 of the earth's land and people, had the strongest economy, and was at its cultural height). Victorian England was conservative and christian and it was a SUPERPOWER. Look at England/UK today. It is a country in debt, in decline, and a has been. Same can be said of France, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Dutch, Germany/Prussia, Italy, etc. All their Empires are gone and in their heydey were notorious for being Christian and Conservative. US is going same direction, our heydey was 1880s – 1990s or so. 1950s probably the height of USA.

I wish people would learn from history.

Victorian Britain was a superpower because they beat the French in 1815 and spent the 19th century exploiting colonies (particularly India) for the benefit of manufacturing industries at home – all maintained by projecting the power of the Royal Navy.

They went into debt and decline as a result of the unification of Germany and their subsequent naval arms race of the 1905 -1914 era that was part of the build-up to WW1. By the end of WW2 they were spent.

All Empires are based on the exploitation of vassal states, not philosophy.

There is so much wrong with your post it is hard to know where to start.....I will just address on issue.

You claim a correlation between belief in the christian god and offer no actual evidence of cause and effect. The Roman empire was almost completely christian when it fell, according to you it should have remained a superpower. My conclusion is you are an idiot.

I'm sorry, "atheist freak", but your assertions regarding atheism are unfounded. Using my Idiomatic Expression Equivalency module (IEE), the expression that best matches the degree to which your assertions may represent truths is: "EPIC FAIL".

Sam Stone… You said – "No, it doesn't. it simply says that atheists do not see any reason to believe"…

No, it's because atheists are ignorant and too stupid to believe. In fact, atheists are even dumber than Lucifer (even Lucifer knows and believes there's a God)….

Several studies have been conducted which show that the higher the intelligence, the LESS likely yoiu are to be religious.
The more gullible, lower intelligent people tend to "believe" stories. Critical minds will question, while lesser intelligent people want people to give them the answers.

It was s start...I was on my way out and didn't have time to do your homework for you.
The Hyde amendment prevents FEDERAL money from being spent to fund abortion, but since Washington DC is not a state, they get federa funds that would not normally go to a city. Some of the funding WAS used to fund abortions which caused a huse blow up in the senate.
Do your own homework...google government funded abortions in DC ( note the timeline of events to get the whole picture)
then google state funded abortions, and government funded abortion, and the google for a breakdown on what the funding dollars are used for by Planned Parenthood and other muder clinics.
You decided to get offended...too bad, you do it to people all day. This is the last I will address this issue...dragging up the past this late doesn't serve either of us.

Because religion is a joke, that's why! All men are created equal, right? Priests are not, cos they can go to school and actually learn to develop a direct link to God, they are above all of us, cos after a bit of studying they can absolve your sins, and wipe your sins away. How on earth do they have the power to do this? How dare they even pretend that they have the power to do this?! Can't people see how absolutely ridioculous this is?!?!?!

I have no probs thanks. I have a wonderful, happy life. Think about it: When Jesus was alive nothing was written down. It wasn't until at least 70 years later that anything was written down, and then it was written in Greek by somebody that wasn't even around with Jesus. How on earth can it be true or accurate?!?! On "The History of The Bible" on The History Channel they even had religion professors saying that The Bible wasn't to be taken literally, and that it was just stories for guidance. Before you say something sarcastic, no, I do not get all my info from the TV, and stop with the personal attacks on people. Imagine a debate on CNN, could u imagine one debater calling another debater an "Athiest freak" or saying "You've got problems"? It would be ridiculous and undermine his argument completely.

I will not get into a discussion about the Pope, Muslums, etc.they know their own path to follow ..... some of them even think it is correct ......... sorry??

God gives you choices to make for yourself and others. Sometimes you make the wrong choice, and then again you make the correct choice. The choice is yours to make and with a background of faithfulness to Jesus Christ, you will usually make the correct choice. You will automatically know RIGHT from WRONG!

People can understand right from wrong perfectly well without any involvent of a religion or god at all. Some people may find some comfort in their personal relationship with their god but soem fo those do not understand right and wrong at all.

While there is generally nothing wrong with a belief in a religion and/or a god it is not necesary to have that in order to live a happy and fulfilling life.

      JESUS IS NOT COMING

“Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things be fulfilled.”
      – Matthew 24:34

The biblical definition of a generation can be found in Psalm 90.
"The years of our lives are 70; and if by reason of strength they be 80 years, yet most of them are labor and sorrow; for life is soon cut off and we fly away."
      26 Psalms 90:10
This is confirmed in the Gospel of Matthew.
"Therefore all the generations from Abraham down to David are 14 generations; and from David down to the Babylonian captivity are 14 generations; and from the Babylonian captivity down to messiah, are 14 generations."
      – Matthew 1:17
Matthew is using the Psalm 90 definitions of Generation in order to tell a specific chronological story.
Even we we put aside that argument, there is further scripture indicating that the Second Coming was expected shortly after Christ's zombification.
“Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour.”
      —1 John 2:18
Christians have been waiting on tenterhooks for the Second Coming since the Bible itself was written.
Many have prophesied the exact time of date of His return and ALL have been wrong.
George Rapp said it would be September 15th, 1829.
William Miller predicted October 22, 1844. Jesus’ failure to arrive is known as “The Great Disappointment”. Many of his disillusioned followers went on the found the 7th Day Adventist Church, who are still patiently awaiting His return.
Charles Russell, 1st President of the Watchtower Society told his fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses that Jesus would be back in 1874.
Rudolf Steiner maintained that from 1930 onwards, Jesus would grant certain people psychic powers to enable them to witness his presence in the “etheric plane”.
Herbert Armstrong, Pastor General of the Worldwide Church of God said 1975.
Bill Maupin managed to convince his followers to sell all of their worldly goods in preparation for Jesus’ return on June 28th, 1981.
Benjamin Crème stated that on June 21st, 1982 Christ would make a worldwide television announcement.
Mark Blitz, Pastor of El Shaddai Ministries says it would be September 30th, 2008
Jerry Falwell said it’d happen between 1999 and 2009.
Harold Camping told everyone that the Rapture would happen May 21, 2011 after failing in his first predicted date of 1994.

Conversely, many believe He’s all ready come in the form of Sun Myung Moon, Emanuel Swedenborg, Baha u llah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, David Koresh, Hailie Selassie, John Thom, Arnold Potter, William Davies, George roux, Ernest Norman, Krishna Venta, Ahn Sahng-Hong, Jim Jones, Mashall Applewhite, Hulon Mitchell, Wayne Bent, Ariffin Mohammed, Mitsuo Matayoshi, Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda, Inri Cristo, Thomas Provenzano, David Icke, Shoko Asahara, Hogan Fukinaga, Marina Tsvigun or Sergei Troop.

It would appear that the much lauded Jewish carpenter has been thoroughly dead for 2000 years and will remain so.

Jesus and Moses were strolling by the Red Sea, when Moses nudged Jesus and said, "Psst. Hey, Jesus, I've still got it."

Moses turned towards the Red Sea and lifted his staff on high. The angels began to sing, the gentle sea breeze turned into a raging gale, and the waters of the Red Sea were parted. Moses lowered his arms and, with a smug grin on his face, turned back to face Jesus.

Jesus scoffed. "Moses, my boy," said the Messiah, "I have still got it." And with a flourish of his robes, Jesus stepped onto the waters of the Red Sea and began to stride across without so much as a ripple.

But to Moses' amazement, halfway across the water, Jesus suddenly began to sink. He splashed into the water and began to choke and flounder as the waves tossed him around. Moses grumbled at Jesus' sillyness and parted the water once more. Moses helped Jesus back to shore, as the Saviour hacked up salt water.

When they had finally reached shore, Moses slapped a consoling hand on Jesus' shoulder and said, "Don't worry about it, Lord. Last time you tried it, you didn't have holes in your feet."

Think for a moment why it is that you don't worry about dying gloriously in battle so you can get to Valhalla when you die.
Perhaps then you can understand why others don't worry the Christian concept of Heaven.
If the One True Deity, shaper of The Universe, wishes their words to be transmitted and adhered to, they should have been a bit less ambiguous. Expecting people to select The Truth out of limitless possibilities on faith alone seems a sloppy way to run things – especially if the punishment for a wrong choice is eternal torment.

For on Judgment Day you're going to see those same jokesters standing before God and peeing in their pants, knowing they are bound for the lake, and many because of the profane jokes they have told. Many think God is a fool, that he will tolerate their filthy jokes about him and yet still save them from going to the lake. But they are mistaken. On Judgment Day God will is going to show them that he is no fool, and nor has he forgotten their many filthy jokes about him or their sins and transgressions. He's going to let them know, "it's payback time", it's time for them to get paid back for their many sins and transgressions, and he will in no wise spare them from his wrath or from spending eternity in the lake...

Our culture welcomes humor to bring common sense to the fore; to release our inhibitions; to sometimes help us understand an idea better; to show that we are human; to test our levels of tolerance; to make a point. In the end, we don't burn buildings, excute people, riot on embassies int eh name of religion or in a "spontaneous" reaction to perceived blasphemy. Insteadm we use humor to defuse those very tensions hoping to see the picture so much more clearly.

And that is precisely why Senaca the Younger is in hell. You think you're wise but you're beyond ignorant and behind the times. Long before you were even an itch in your daddy's pants, and thousands of years before you were born, the scriptures had already prophesied that the time would come when men would turn away from God, that they would be lovers of themselves, heady, high-minded, boasters, proud, disobedient to parents. And yes, it even spoke about people like you – people who speak evil of things you understand not – but goes on to say you shall utterly perish in your own corruption. Even Jesus himself stated "the end cannot come until he has been rejected of this generation". Thus, these events are all just the fulfilling of prophecy, prophecy that existed long before you were born. Yet, you've got the nerve to try to say with a straight face, that because of these changes in the times, it means Jesus is a joke. How deceived you are, and the jokes on you. Rest assured, Jesus is alive and well and things couldn't be better and he's coming soon. He coming for those who love him and for his saints. And he's going to leave people like you and your rusty butt right here to burn in hell...

view – pure nonsense. religion is the attempt by primitive men to explain what was unexplainable for the time. nearly all things once attributed to divine intentions have been found to be of natural causes and that trend is not likely to miraculously reverse.

you have no personal knowledge of the disposition of anyone's soul, let alone even if a heaven or hell actually exists.

Indeed, these tough times, heralding the End of Days were prophesied many centuries before our lives began.
"The age of evil has come to the world . Everyone steals and hoards great wealth, and sensual sin rules the day. The end of the world is at hand – yet men are hard and cruel, and listen not to the doom that is coming . No one heeds the cries of his neighbour, or lifts a hand to save."

@OV............ you have your fingers in your ears again OV....... You make the claim that there is a god, you must provide the evidence. Are you that simple minded?

      @fintastic

You can always tell how insecure people like OV are in their beliefs by a few methods.

      1) How quick it takes them to plug their ears and go "LALALALALALALA".
      2) How often they jump from fallacy to fallacy.
