My Take: What all those Jesus jokes tell us

Editor’s note: Edward J. Blum is a historian of race and religion at San Diego State University. Paul Harvey is a history professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and runs the blog Religion in AmericanHistory. They co-authored “The Color of Christ: The Son of God and the Saga of Race in America.”

By Edward J. Blum and Paul Harvey, Special to CNN

Did you ever hear the one about Jesus being Mexican? Well, he was bilingual; he was constantly harassed by the government; and his first name was Jesus.

Or, perhaps Jesus was Irish? He loved a good story; he never kept a steady job; and his last request was for a drink.

Or maybe it’s possible that Jesus was Californian? He never cut his hair; he was always walking around barefoot; and he started a new religion.

You may not have heard these Jesus jokes, but you’ve heard others. They represent a comedic trend that has animated the United States since the 1970s. More and more comedy gimmicks hit on Jesus, his ethnicity and his relationship to politics. Laughing with (and at) the Lord is now fodder for major motion pictures, barroom comedy tours, graphic novels, t-shirts and bumper stickers.

How is it that a figure sacred to so many Americans has become the punch line of so many jokes? And why is it acceptable to poke fun at Jesus when other sacred figures are deemed off limits or there is hell to pay for mocking them?

The explanations are as numerous as the laughs.

Immigration shifts from the 1960s changed the ethnic and religious faces of the country so no tradition dominates today. The Christian right made such a moral spectacle of itself that it practically begged to be mocked. The emergence of “spiritual, but not religious” sensibilities left many Americans willing to denounce or laugh about traditional faith. The public rise of agnosticism, atheism, and secularism led to aggressive mockery as a form of persuasion.

If we pause to consider why we’re laughing, we find that the comic bits delve into some of our thorniest and unresolved problems. The jokes reveal much more about us than they do Jesus. They speak to how our society has changed, how it hasn’t, and what we’re obsessed with.

The first public jokes about Jesus were heard in the 1970s. There had been religious jokes before this, but none about Jesus had become widely popular because organized Christianity held such authority. As the economic recession and problems of urban decay collided with civil rights exhaustion and new immigration, however, some Jesus jokes emerged.

Archie Bunker on “All in the Family” was the white racist and misogynist you loved to hate and hated to love. On one occasion, his son-in-law challenged Bunker’s rampant anti-Semitism with the claim, "Jesus was Jewish." Archie shot back immediately: "Only on his mother's side."

The “All in the Family” spin off “Good Times” featured a black family that lives in an inner-city housing project, probably Chicago's infamous Cabrini Green. On the show's second episode, the oldest son J. J. astounded everyone by painting Jesus as black. The younger son loves it, and says he learned all about Christ’s blackness from the local Nation of Islam.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

As the family debates whether this black Jesus should be hung on the wall in place of their white Jesus, they “miraculously” receive $140 from the Internal Revenue Service. Feeling blessed, the family placed the painting on its living room wall, and the elated J. J. shouted his tagline, "Dyno-mite!”

From the 1980s to the present, the number of prominent Jesus jokes has multiplied like loaves and fishes:

• In “Talladega Nights,” Ricky Bobby and his family debated which Jesus to pray to (“baby Jesus in golden fleece diapers,” “grown-up Jesus,” “ninja Jesus”). Their overall hope is that Jesus will help them continue their extravagant lifestyle.

• “South Park” featured Jesus as a weak-kneed host of a local talk show who boxes the devil.

• “Family Guy” had Jesus perform magic tricks that wowed his ancient audience.

• “The Colbert Report” placed a gun in Christ’s hand and had him defend conservatives against the liberal “War on Easter.”

• “Saturday Night Live” let Jesus chastise Tim Tebow for using the Lord’s name in vain and ended the bit by declaring that the Mormons have it right.

One unforgettable scene in the rather forgettable recent film “21 Jump Street” may explain why Jesus has become such a joke.

Before Jonah Hill’s character returns to high school as an undercover cop, he prays to a small, crucified “Korean Jesus.” Down on his knees, he says: “Hey Korean Jesus, I don’t know if you only cater to Korean Christians or if you even exist, no offense. I’m just really freaked out about going back to high school. It was just so f***ing hard the first time. … I just really don’t want to f*** this up. Sorry for swearing so much. The end? I don’t really know how to end the prayer.”

The hilarity of the moment only makes sense in our time. Hill's character is unchurched and agnostic, but wants spiritual power to guide him. We can laugh at how agnosticism and being “spiritual, but not religious,” leave him uncertain of what to say, how to say it, and even how to end.

We can also laugh at how ethnic factors color his approach. By wondering if Korean Jesus cares only about Korean problems, Hill pokes fun at the issue which was made a media spectacle in 2008, when the Rev. Jeremiah Wright could be heard preaching that “Jesus was a poor black man” as part of his support for Barack Obama. What good is a God who only cares for those who look like him?

The Jesus jokes not only reveal how tangled our religious, racial, economic and political positions have become, but also how many outlets there are for the jokes. In these tense times, when presidential hopefuls point fingers at one another and families unfriend one another over political and cultural differences, laughing may be one way to talk about the problems without killing one another.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Edward J. Blum and Paul Harvey.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 1 Corinthians 1:18-21

Someone left this. I 'd hate to guess where it's been.

"Atheists can not make an a-priori claim that the supernatural is impossible, unless they disprove the existence of the God of Israel"

Which may be a decay product of "Atheists cannot make an a-priori claim that the supernatural is impossible, unless they disprove the existence of at least one thing that is supernatural".

Or is it "Atheists cannot make an a-priori claim that the supernatural is impossible, unless they disprove the existence of everything that is supernatural"?

Hmm... Certainly I can conjecture that the supernatural is impossible if no one can produce an example of the supernatural. Actually, I'd avoid the modal "impossible" and conjecture that the supernatural does not occur. At any rate, the conjecture serves me well until someone comes up with an example of the supernatural.

When is something supernatural anyway? When it exceeds irreducible laws of nature? Are there such laws?

I wanted to complain that Blum and Harvey didn't add anything to their point by stating – at the start – racist, hateful jokes, when so many less offensive jokes abound for public consumption, but after looking at many of the lunatic posts that followed their piece, it just might be that they counted on this audience. Congrats Blum and Harvey.

Hawaii, this is the catechism of the Catholic Church so, again, your representation of "the doctrine" is inaccurate:

God predestines no one to go to hell;620 for this, a willful turning away from God (a mortal sin) is necessary, and persistence in it until the end.

You know the vatican is running the longest running scam in history, it is all about control, wealth and power. The nice thing about free will is that people that have not been ensnared by the scam can attempt to provide reason and common sense to those that are trapped in the delusion. Even you Bill, your church is the biggest scam of all time, you still can make the break and feel good about yourself again.

If God interferes with people in any way, by answering prayers, or creating miracles, then he's "guiding" certain people along a path which means predestination. Arguments against predestination only work if you accept a God that just watches, and does nothing whatsoever to tamper with the natural course of events. A God that lets the world be natural, as though he doesn't even exist. Any God that does that can't blame people for being taken in by his hiding himself. Therefore, God cannot judge non-believers harshly, right?

I think people started to tell more jokes about Jesus in the 1970's because this is when people stopped believing seriously that Christ is God. The Catholic Mass changed, the culture became secularized and man became "god" for a time. If people really believed Jesus was God, they would not mock him. If it is true, it is true and God will not be mocked. If it is not true, perhaps it deserves to be mocked. As a child of modernism, I am waking up to the fact that the revelations of Christ may well be true, and this modern age of mockery and scoffing has been predicted.

Um, Johhny, I think you, like many people don't understand what Christ means. Christ is not a last name. Christ means Messiah. If the Messiah exists then God exists and the Messiah is God. This is pretty much by definition.

It is impossible to believe that Jesus Christ isn't God because "Christ" means he is God.

It is possible to believe that the man named Jesus who was executed by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago, was just a man. That is, it is possible to say Jesus isn't God.

It just makes no sense to say "God isn't God" which is what is being said when someone says "Jesus Christ isn't God."

    • Dissident Fairy

@Hugo: You need to check your facts! According to 'New Advent Catholic encyclopedia the word "Jesus" means "Jehovah is Salvation." Christ means "Anointed." This can be verified by many sources. Christ never claimed to be God. He said, "The father is greater than I." He said he was on earth to do "The will of my father." There are hundreds of scriptures in the Bible to support this. The Bible speaks of Christ as being God's first creation. God had no beginning, Christ did. By the way, I'm not a Catholic, I only referenced it as source material:)

      November 13, 2012 at 4:35 pm |
    • Tal

      @Hugo

Actually messiah just means savior. And Christ is just a translation from the Hebrew word for messiah. There is no inherent implication of godhood there. Nothing in the original Judaic tradition would lead you to believe the savior they were waiting for was supposed to be their God himself.

The divinity of Christ didnt even become Christian doctrine until over a century later.

The entire concept of the Trinity is some of the most ridiculous theological gibberish in any religion. "We believe in one God, but he has multiple personality disorder and talks to himself a lot".

JC: "I am waking up to the fact that the revelations of Christ may well be true"

Sounds more like you're sinking into delusion. Don't feel too bad, when people get older if they aren't scared already then they get more scared. People down on their luck, in prison, etc., all susceptible to falling in love with the fairy tale. Everyone thinks the world is worse than when they were young, but it just isn't so. The world simply changes, progresses, and people often don't deal with that change well, or maybe manage to for a time. So if you're the type to reminisce about "good old days" then actually go back and examine that time period. You'll find life wasn't as golden as you remember.

      November 13, 2012 at 4:50 pm |
    • JamesK

      JohnnyC
Even in countries where the vile torturing despot really does exist people still mock them. They're just more careful about it, is all. Unlike many Mid East countries our laws recognize that religion is a matter of opinion, so there are laws in place to protect people from being murdered for something someone else considers blasphemous. The irony is that many who get really offended by Jesus jokes have no trouble telling Muhammad jokes.

Mockery and scoffing may have been predicted because it was evident from the very beginning, and for good reason. The entire concept of dying in order to redeem someone else is ridiculous, but the idea of an immortal god becoming human just to die in order to reverse a condition that he created in the first place is even more so.

We mock Jesus for a reason that has nothing to do with Jesus or god or any religion. Humor fills a basic need in all people. For humor to work we need some common ground between the joke teller and audience. In our increasingly diverse society, we have less and less in common. What's left is religious figures and politicians. Even with that, do you think a joke about holey feet and golf would fly in an animist community in Africa?
I think only humor about bodily functions remains truely universal.

Americans are the only people in the world that think they can say anything they want without any consequences, that is Big mistake, Huge mistake, God give us free will but with that comes responsibility, the word of God said in Matthew 12:37 "For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." so make not mistake about it people, watch what you say, specially if if is about God, I said this with the most concern for your eternal soul, get close to Christ and He will get close to you, don't waist your time with this useless topics and put your aim in the most precious thing: your salvation, I will be praying for you all tonight and tomorrow. God Bless you Family :)

Sam the proposition is not to spend eternity with a being from whom one needs to be saved. You either don't understand the dynamic or are obfuscating. From our previous conversations, I suspect the latter.

If you require fear of eternal damnation in order to be good and just then you are neither good nor just. Furthermore any religious text that contains rules for keeping slaves is disqualified as a basis for any modern system of justice or moral behavior. Lastly to paraphrase Gandhi, I like your Christ but I do not like your Christians they are so unlike your Christ.

    • Bill Deacon

No wonder you're confused. Your inquiry stops at a very elementary level. Here is a portion of a discourse aimed at Epicurius's dilemma which is widely accepted:

A world containing creatures who are significantly free (and freely perform more good than evil actions) is more valuable, all else being equal, than a world containing no free creatures at all. Now God can create free creatures, but He can't cause or determine them to do only what is right. For if He does so, then they aren't significantly free after all; they do not do what is right freely. To create creatures capable of moral good, therefore, He must create creatures capable of moral evil; and He can't give these creatures the freedom to perform evil and at the same time prevent them from doing so. As it turned out, sadly enough, some of the free creatures God created went wrong in the exercise of their freedom; this is the source of moral evil. The fact that free creatures sometimes go wrong, however, counts neither against God's omnipotence nor against His goodness; for He could have forestalled the occurrence of moral evil only by removing the possibility of moral good.

Therefore, it is we, humans who have the power to choose good over evil, or let's say we can choose love over hatred. Since God, by definition, is love and heaven is the place where we reside in eternal peace, it stands to reason that we get to choose whether to accept goodness and love or evil and hatred. God does not punish us, we punish ourselves. Shifting the responsibility of your choice over to God is juvenile and theologically inaccurate. Therefore, if that is your argument, you are not really arguing with Christianity. You are arguing with your perverted interpretation of Christianity or perhaps the one someone fed you because you didn't do your own investigation.

Again, I'm sorry to insult your understanding. I at least gave you credit for knowing the reality but distorting it out of some other motive. I didn't realize you were truly ignorant, by which I mean ill-informed, not stupid.

If I didn't have better morals than your concept of god (biblically based correct?), then your argument might have some merit, considering of course that we completely ignore the fact that you can't even present evidence your god even exists.

Not so much love me or I'll kill you, more like do as your damn well told or you are toast. You sure do have the free will to screw up, like the vatican does from time to time, but as long as you suck back up to JJEESSUUSS and pay your dues, you are home free. So the priests are the drill sgt's and the bishops like dictators; my drill sgt. used to tell us that we were noy paid to think, the priest has the same method of operations.

You are arguing with your perverted interpretation of Christianity
      ------
Is there such a thing as a non-perverted interpretation of christianity? How could there be? If there was one all-encompassing way of looking at things, wouldn't everyone just use that way? Who's to say yours isn't the perverted interp? Besides, christianity does not = God. One can have a belief in a divine creator, and a sense of the spiritual side of their existence without knowing the first thing about christianity.

I doubt you even know a priest. No priest I have ever known has told me not to think. On the contrary, it is only through rigorous thinking and honest appraisal of his self that man is confronted with the limitation of his own goodness and the conviction of his basic depravity. Go ahead, look at your self, we'll all wait. Then when you have come to the conviction that you are only one man among many and that we are all fall short of perfection and in need of grace and mercy, perhaps you will find yourself at the foot of the cross and surrender yourself to Jesus. It's your choice.

Bill D. – "Hawaii, nice retreat under cover. Are you really suggesting to us that your life is without blemish, stain or error?"

Why is it so hard to believe that there are some out there who don't have freckles, who are not sloppy eaters and can play a good game of softball?

That's why so many who have claimed to surrender themselves to your Christ have actually participated in the destruction of this earth and mankind. Your kind is what drove our economy into the ground, molested small children, are full of greed and gluttony, the proof of surrendering yourself to your Christ has only proven that you and your kind are nothing more than a bunch of prejudice bigots against those that don't believe as you do, the Christian Taliban. Your religion is a disgrace to this country and needs to be eliminated.

And that's a nice retreat into Ray Comfort territoy. I will say, however, that I have never rained sulfur down upon two cities, and I've never condoned slavery, rape, or the murder of entire cities. I've never ordered those things be done either, and I never would do any of the things that I listed, even if I had the power to do so. I would also not torture people for all eternity, especially for something as trivial as looking at a woman and thinking that she's damn hot, or for not believing in me and worshipping me. Could the same be said for your god? If you're taking the biblical route, then no, you could not say the same for your god.

madtown, while it is certainly possible for anyone to misinterpret, I try to use generally accepted philosophical constructs and the catechism of the Roman Catholic Church to build my thinking around. My pet peeve is the straw man arguments or ridiculous and deliberate misrepresentations some people use just for sport, when I thought they knew better. The discouraging thing is to find out that many are not making fun, they actually think what they believe is doctrinal when it is not.

You will accept my imperfection if they are not too disgusting? Exactly my point. What about those whose imperfections are disgusting to you or to me? Where can they go to find peace?

"Exactly my point. What about those whose imperfections are disgusting to you or to me? Where can they go to find peace?"

By accepting yourself for who you are and worrying about making yourself a better person. You don't need to believe in a god to find peace, peace comes when you actually can love yourself and other for who they are. Human beings are control freaks and want to change others to fit their definitions of good and bad but not everyone has those same definitions. Once you actually love yourself you'll find peace, you need to stop looking for it in other places.

Bob that reminds of this quote.

When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others. Christians keep trying to find it outside of themselves which is why they enjoy bringing so much conflict into our society.

Your RCC organization does seem to have a problem with figuring out what is disgusting and what is not. So child abuse we will try and cover up and just shuffle the perps around, but that damn butler turned whistleblower is going to do his time because he took some embaras*sing docu*ments. Ivantsubasa… If you pray, you should pray for the sheep, not for the devils, because the devils aren't going to be saved anyway. Instead, they'll continue mocking God and making fun of God until they are taken out of the way. And it will happen soon. Even Jesus himself said, the end cannot come until he has been rejected of this generation. So be not alarmed by these events. These events must happen that the end may come. But woe unto him by whom they come by…

Sam Stone, you said… "It is interesting that people seek eternity with a being from which they have to be saved"…

Your statement is both flawed and false. Everybody's soul is already eternal. They don't have to seek eternity because they already have it. The only question is, will you spend eternity in the lake with Lucifer (eternal death), or eternity in heaven with Jesus (eternal life). You have no choice in the matter, you WILL spend eternity in one place or the other. The only choice you do have is in determining which place it will be…

Do nothing, and you are bound for the lake. Repent of your sins and evil acts and follow the system set up by God, and you can be saved. The choice is yours….

Thus, if you end up in hell it will be totally your fault, not God's…
