(CNN) - A few years ago, I came across a high school textbook on U.S. history that stumbled badly when it tried to describe the first Thanksgiving. Because of a serious misunderstanding of the First Amendment, the authors thought they couldn’t even refer to God in their textbook. So they ended up telling their readers that the Pilgrims were giving thanks to the Indians. (Huh?)
Personally, I think Thanksgiving is (and was) about giving thanks to God, but I am too eclectic nowadays to confine my giving of thanks to the capricious Calvinist God of the Pilgrims. So in the spirit of Pascal, who placed a wager on the Christian god, I'm putting a marker down, too. But why confine your wager to one divinity? Here is my own Thanksgiving litany to the gods.
To Kali, black goddess of fierce justice, thanks for scaring me to death. I know the skulls around your neck and the blood dripping from your mouth frighten a lot of people, but somebody has to lord over the cremation grounds, and I'm happy to have it be you (really).

To Christopher Hitchens (the closest my atheist friends get to a divinity nowadays), thanks for channeling Kali and for not converting on your deathbed (right?). “I hate the pack of gods,” wrote Marx. You showed us what that passion sounds like.
To Allah, thanks for reminding us of the gap between God and human beings. And for being the word Arab Christians use for "God," too. And for this Thanksgiving day verse from the Quran: “Give food, for the love of Him, to the needy, the orphan, the captive” (76:8).
To the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, thanks for the rhythm of exile and return, for teaching us how to argue and for the biblical book of Ecclesiastes (Oh, and Bob Dylan and Woody Allen, of course).
To Jesus, thanks for taking on a human body and for loving Mary and for "Godspell" and for saving that wedding day by turning that water into wine. I will raise a glass (or two) to you this Thanksgiving.
To the Amida Buddha of Infinite Light, thanks for spinning the Pure Land out of your grace and your imagination, and for being at the end of the tunnel in those near-death experiences. Luther said all we need is faith. Thanks for not even requiring that.
CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories
To Krishna, thanks for reminding us that the gods can be playful (and mischievous), too. And for this grand promise from the Hindu scripture the "Bhagavad Gita" (4:11): “In whatsoever way any come to Me, in that same way I grant them favor.”
Finally, to the unknown gods (and anti-gods) of East and West, thanks for your mysterious silence (and for keeping the comments below relatively civil).
Om, Amen, Ahhhh!
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Stephen Prothero.
Trash. Try again.
Every knee shall bow and tongue confess he is Lord.
It is easier to start now.
"Why confine your wager to one divinity?" Way to cover your azz, you tool!
What religion offers:
– The opportunity to avoid eternal punishment for not worshiping/believing in my god (not worried enough to care)
– An explanation for the universe and why we are here (I'll take the knowledge gained from the application of the scientific method, but thanks)
– Living forever in heavenly bliss (I am content with this life)
– The opportunity to divide humanity based upon different belief systems (There is enough dividing us already)
– Purpose, a code of ethics, and fulfillment (I have that already, without religion)
– Develop a personal relationship with god (I've never seen or heard from any gods nor have I seen any independantly verified scientifically collected peer reviewed proof. Until then I will remain a skeptic.)
Did I miss anything?
"Did I miss anything"
The opportunity to wear silly outfits and bang alter boys?
the right to fleece people of their life savings, then have those same people tell others how holy you are?

Prothero is a complete and total idiot.
The first Thanksgiving was exactly what this textbook said it was. The Abenaki and Pawtuxet Indians showed the starving settlers at Plymouth how to fish, extract maple and cultivate corn. When the pilgrims reaped their first harvest, they invited the Indians to come feats with them as a means to "THANK" them for teaching them the things they needed to be able to survive the first year. Half of the settlers died before the Indians began helping them. The remaining half were very grateful for the help that the native Americans provided. God didn't keep them alive, the Indians did. They weren't thanking god, they were thanking the Indians.
Prothero is simple minded history challenged dufus.
I don't think we really know what happened. One of the latest theories holds that the wampanoag showed up due to a confusing accident relating to celebratory gunfire and were invited to stay on. They made some big contributions and so were undoubtedly thanked, along with the settlers god. No one used the term "Thanksgiving" then anyway, so we can make it mean whatever we like. If this guy and his family like thanking multiple gods, that's fine, it you want to thank your brother for bailing your kid out of jail, fine too. It's a nice holiday where we share in a community tradition...stop taking the details so seriously all.
Thanks, god, for hurricane Sandy. You jerk.
Hey, the big kahuna upstairs gave humans the free will to pollute their environment and to dump excessive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. God gave us enough rope to hang ourselves, and we are doing just that.
Storms like Sandy have been routinely hitting the same area as noted by the historical record which started way before any potential climate changes were observed. And with the Sun continuously expanding and contributions of green house gases from volcanoes, African termites, cows and decaying trees/plants/insects/animals, there may not be anything we can do about it even if there is an effect.
e.g. Sandy type storms Pre-1900 that have impacted Pennsylvania:
September 18, 1876- A tropical storm produced 50 knots (93 km/h, 58 mph) sustained winds in at least parts of Pennsylvania.
September 13, 1878- A extratropical storm produced at least 70 km/h sustained winds throughout the state.
October 24, 1878- The Gale of 1878 destroys at least 700 buildings, causes $2 million in damage, kills at least ten people and injures more, and produced 80 km/h sustained winds throughout the state.
October 13, 1885- An extratropical storm produced 70 km/h sustained winds throughout the state.
August 22, 1888- A tropical storm produced 75 km/h sustained winds throughout the state.
August 29, 1893- A tropical storm produced 100 km/h sustained winds throughout the state.
October 25, 1893- A tropical storm produced 65 km/h sustained winds.
September 30, 1896- An extratropical storm produced 95–100 km/h sustained winds.
November 1, 1899- An extratropical storm produced 95 km/h sustained winds.
June 29, 1902- A extratropical storm caused 65 knots (120 km/h) winds throughout the state.
September 16, 1903- The V-agabond Hurricane affects Pennsylvania as a tropical storm with winds of 50–65 km/h, after making landfall in New Jersey with hurricane force winds.
August 4, 1915- A tropical depression caused winds of 45 km/h.
October 1, 1915- An extratropical storm caused winds of 65 km/h.
October 24, 1923- An extratropical storm caused winds of 75 km/h.
September 20, 1928- An extratropical storm caused winds of 75 km/h.
October 3, 1929- An extratropical storm caused winds of 55 km/h.
September 21, 1932- A tropical depression caused winds of 30 km/h.
August 24, 1933- A tropical storm caused winds of 85 km/h.
August 19, 1939- A tropical depression caused winds of 45 km/h.
September 19, 1945- An extratropical storm caused winds of 45 km/h.
August 29, 1949- An tropical storm caused winds of 65 km/h.
1951-2000 (when we started to name said storms)
Hurricane Agnes over Pennsylvania September 1, 1952-
Tropical Storm Able affects Pennsylvania as a tropical storm and tropical depression after making landfall in South Carolina as a hurricane.
October 15, 1954- Hurricane Hazel causes hurricane force winds and small portions with 6 inches (150 mm) or more of rain.
August, 1955- Hurricanes Connie and Diane both cause as much as 10 inches (250 mm) of rain and tropical storm force winds.
June 21-June 22, 1972- Hurricane Agnes caused rain and some winds. It caused widespread rains of 6 to 12 inches (300 mm) with local amounts up to 19 inches (480 mm).
September 6, 1979- Tropical Storm David causes tropical storm force winds and at least 5 inches of rain.
September, 1987- Tropical Depression Nine brings at least 5 inches of rain to part of the state.
September 26, 1992- Tropical Storm Danielle causes tropical storm force winds
August 18, 1994- Tropical Depression Beryl causes some rain and tropical depression winds
August 29-August 31, 1999- Hurricane Dennis causes tropical depression force winds and five inches (127 mm) of rain
A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) worker with a flood victim from Floyd in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Floyd's rain affecting Pennsylvania, and surrounding states September 16, 1999- Tropical Storm Floyd causes 6 deaths in Pennsylvania, and 10 inches (250 mm) of rain in the eastern part of the state. It produced a 2.8 ft (0.85 m) storm surge in Philadelphia.
Leif, either we don't have free will, or god is not omniscient, or he doesn't exist. Choose wisely.
Taking god down a few notches:
As per the famous contemporary theologian, Edward Schillebeeckx, God (if one exists) is not omniscient. Please read, pause and contemplate the following by Schillebeeckx:
Church: The Human Story of God,
Crossroad, 1993, p.91 (softcover)
"Christians (et al) must give up a perverse, unhealthy and inhuman doctrine of predestination without in so doing making God the great scapegoat of history."
"Nothing is determined in advance: in nature there is chance and determinism; in the world of human activity there is possibility of free choices.
Therefore the historical future is not known even to God, otherwise we and our history would be merely a puppet show in which God holds the strings.
For God, too, history is an adventure, an open history for and of men and women."
i.e. No one, not even God (if one exists) can prophesy since that would violate the human condition of Free Will and Future.
thoughtful article. well said.
Prayer changes things
I'm sorry, "Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things", but your assertions regarding atheism and prayer are unfounded. Using my Idiomatic Expression Equivalency module (IEE), the expression that best matches the degree to which your assertions may represent truths is: "TOTAL FAIL".
I see that you repeat these unfounded statements with high frequency. Perhaps the following book can help you:

This troll is not a christian
Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.
An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.
The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs.
So really, to worship and idol a statue that is made to look that is sticking its tongue at you is such an insane thing to do. That only rabid, extremist and fanatical atheists can agree to such a deranged thing.
:-D :-D :-D ROTFLOL :-D! You got it panic! It is just like the Romanists. They have to carry the idols because though they have feet they do not walk. So ALL Idols are Blind, Deaf, Mute, without the use of any of their portrayed senses. As their worshippers are also senseless.
It is Baffling indeed that Atheists agree with them so often. Given their Fantastic "claims" of "Logical Thinking" and of being "Evidencial Proof Seekers".
I'm not even sure how you nitwits carry on a conversation with all the various delusions at play.
Yeah, very well said by panic and EX!!
Actually there is nothing inherently wrong with having or practicing a religion. As atheists wants to make it appear, but I do agree that Idolatry is Not religion as EX well put it. Only humans have "religion". Idolatry however is a sin, a breaking of God's first Commandment.
Animals do NOT have religion, they do have routines and rituals but that's not Religion. That is ONE thing among many that differentiates and separates mankind from animals. Atheists are fanatical advocates of the aberrant theory of evolution and as such, should be able to understand that. But it appears they haven't "evolved" enough yet. Therefore remaining at the lower levels of having rituals and routines like animals and idolaters. Which whom they constantly agree.
Good Lord in Heaven, help all atheists to develop, progress and rise up to next higher level above the apes and have some religion but not idolatry. In Jesus name I prayed not preyed. Atheists do not pray they do prey instead rabidly.
I'm enjoying how you post as His Panic, respond as Ex Catholic and then back it up with Salero. It is so painfully obvious. One buffoon and his need to post in agreement with himself. Very sad.
I takes a buffoon to know a buffoon. Are you ready to evolve to a level higher than that of the apes?
Your post is...difficult to even understand, but assuming you mean to say that worshiping a statue with it's tongue sticking out is stupid, I have to point out a few things.
1) Just because you do not understand the cultural reference within the art of the statue, does not mean that the art has less value, nor that the statue is, in fact, "sticking it's tongue out at you".
2) Equating worship of a deity with worshiping an image of said deity is ludicrous...unless you believe that all of the Christians with pictures of Jesus and/or crosses in their homes/churches are worshiping the picture/cross.
Salero keep posting, you are in the running for dimmest bulb on this blog; quite an achievement.
T H E P E T I T I O N S I T E has one to remove Marco Rubio from the science committee
new agey pagan nonsense. Just get into a real church (not one of the faux churches like unitarian) to learn about heaven and hell and he who died for us.
lol... people are *leaving* the church, not joining. Wise up, nincompoop.
Any church that claims that another church is false defines the true meaning of irony.
I'm enjoying the Ben-Hur chariot race.... another dolphin is flipped.
Atheism is the most vile filth know to man.
I'm sorry, "Paul Starks", but your assertions regarding atheism are unfounded. Using my Idiomatic Expression Equivalency module (IEE), the expression that best matches the degree to which your assertions may represent truths is: "EPIC FAIL".
Atheists and idolaters almost always agree. An atheist is probably a frustrated idolater, ashamed of his blind, deaf and mute Idols.
"his blind, deaf and mute Idols."
Just like yours, kid. You are welcome to provide evidence that yours sees, hears or says a dang thing.
Ps. 14:1 The fool (atheist) says in his hearth, "There is no God." So does the Idolater then goes and make an Idol for himself of a piece of wood.
That's so easy to say about others who don't believe the way you do. There is no evidence that your mystical, magical stories are true.
religious people = village idiots
please tell us again how jesus is coming back one day "soon," you gibbering dullards.
It certainly is the most vile, given the fact that atheism thru their main vehicle of expression communism, has killed millions. Idolatry thru their main vehicle the Roman-catholic "church", really a Politico-religious organization has also killed many. Though not as many as the millions the atheistic-communists-marxists-leninists-maoists have.
So it should be of no surprise at all to anyone, that rabid atheists do agree frequently with Idolaters. The Scripture applies to both of them where it says; Ps. 14:1; 53:1 The fool says in his heart, "There is no God."...
Atheists are usually communist, socialist and fascist because these ideologies provides them with a false sense of "legality" to their breaking of God's Commandments not to steal and not to covet their neighbor's house among other things.
I agree completely with panic in its Appraisal of the Roman-Catholic Organization. It is indeed a Political-Religulous Organization. Not really a church at all, as it is clearly shown in the New Testament Scriptures. The church of the New Covenant in Christ Jesus did not, was not to have a Hierarchical System of Priests. Because Jesus Christ in Heaven is Our ONLY, again I say our ONLY Priest and that in Heaven.
Thanks folks. You make our job so much easier! You nutters should open a factory: at the rate you help create atheists you may well find a way to make money with it.
IDOLATRY is Not religion, IDOLATRY is a grave and serious SIN. An aberration against the very nature of man who was created in the image of God.
Roman-catholics, hinduists, panteists et al, share in that grave and serious SIN of IDOLATRY.
The love for Money is also IDOLATRY. There is only ONE GOD and only ONE MEDIATOR between God and mankind and is ONLY JESUSCHRIST.
You aren't going to bother posting as His Panic or Salero here as well?
Indeed. Catholics are the biggest sinners when it comes to the first two commandments. They worship many gods, and they worship idols.
Pantheists only sin according to the dogma of organized religion. If Catholics wish to condemn themselves with their own words, so be it.
Why do we need a mediator?
Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of the hands of earthling man.
5A mouth they have, but they cannot speak;
Eyes they have, but they cannot see;
6Ears they have, but they cannot hear.
A nose they have, but they cannot smell.
7Hands are theirs, but they cannot feel.
Feet are theirs, but they cannot walk;
They utter no sound with their throat.
8Those making them will become just like them,
All those who are trusting in them. Psalm 115
Please learn to walk in the many footsteps of Bilbo. In His name I pray...
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty wet hole, filled with the ends of earth worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole, with nothing to sit down on or to eat; it was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort."
From the book of Bilbo, 1:1
my mullah's female goats are glued to their Taliban male goats, filthy desire to produce more skunk goats, SEE, SEE THEY NOT, HEAR HEAR THEY NOT, THEY JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND, KORAN 13: 13, GOATS ARE DUMB, DEAF AND BLIND, AL QURAN. bunch of Is lamb's, ignorant s, spewing their terror ism, absurdities as some thing of a holy nature.
CNN, I'm formally reporting the poster of the above message as a Terrorist. Under the Patriot Act, any citizen can report a suspected terrorist to Homeland Security. "hinduism by Judaism self center ,secularism source of hindu filthy hinduism, racism." Is a terrorist.
This is NOT a joke. If you don't believe that the Patriot Act allows this reporting then look it up. Enough of terrorist plaguing our media!
Ah, poor, poor, gullible Topher!
(this guy is a sham Poe... often confused with a 'sham poo'!)
lol, can you imagine the government being clogged by every low-IQ fundie calling "citizen's arrest" on anyone who disagrees with their delusion? amazing....
No need at all to panic when facing the muslim, I'm His panic.
Hinduism is a beautiful religion that has its faults, just like any other belief. Why not educate yourself about it before you attack it?
"beautiful religion" is an oxymoron
Actually "end religion" I'd say you're the moron. You're no different than religious fundamentalist by FORCING your atheism down peoples throats.
Hypocrite. Big time.
i'm merely stating facts, you vapid boob.
Deuteronomy 6:14-16 (NIV)
14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; 15 for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. 16 Do not put the Lord your God to the test as you did at Massah.
and your babblings on the "Babble" .. I mean Bible, are supposed to prove.... what?
Of course the Bible is nothing but a myth, just like all other religions. Since I've not been around for 2000-some years, I wonder why anybody even believes in me anymore! LOL!
So you admit that there are other gods, but we better follow your evil god or he will destroy us? The other imaginary gods will protect us from your evil god. The Bible also commands you to kill your son, but here in the real world you will face consequences for taking your fantasy beliefs to such an extreme.
You should be embarrassed to quote that text. The God of Abraham is so petty as to be jealous of other gods?
Why should he/she/it be jealous of things that do not exist? This text ascribes human failings to the supposed creator of the universe, but we are supposed to believe that it represents the word of God?
Doitornery 7:45 Thou shalt not do it to my goats. Superstitions like Christian ones are for cowards and simpletons.
Prayer changes things ,
The Hindu idol looks more like an evil spirt!
@ Brampt, you're such an ignorant git. Sigh.
This is my experience... Thank you.
MY personal testimony.
A thought to consider without an ego response
I Accepted Jesus christ as my lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
The world denounces truth....
Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.
Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.
The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.
Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners. Even once we are saved by christs merciful grace we will still experience adversity to mold us to adhering to the truth.
We will slip... But not fall of the ship ...carrying us onward to perfection in christs grace.
We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .
Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from some other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..
Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .
Trancsend the temporal world.
Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .
Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.
Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith ....above reason in Jesus Christ.
Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....
Read Ecclesiastes. Read romans or corinthians.
You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.
Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are by faith above reason in christ.
I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .
Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?
Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.
once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it
You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus
"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved
Last eve I passed beside a blacksmith’s door,
And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime;
The, looking in, I saw upon the floor
Old hammers, worn with beating years of time.
“How many anvils have you had,” said I,
“To wear and batter all these hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he, and then with twinkling eye,
“The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.”
And so, thought I, the anvil of God’s Word,
For ages skeptic blows have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed – the hammers gone.
Too long, too boring......
And too meaningless.
Christians need to just shut up! Why they think their religion works better than others, is beyond me!!!
With posts like this, who needs Ambien.
