My Take: A multireligious Thanksgiving

Editor's Note: Stephen Prothero, a Boston University religion scholar and author of "The American Bible: How Our Words Unite, Divide, and Define a Nation," is a regular CNN Belief Blog contributor.

By Stephen Prothero, Special to CNN

(CNN) - A few years ago, I came across a high school textbook on U.S. history that stumbled badly when it tried to describe the first Thanksgiving. Because of a serious misunderstanding of the First Amendment, the authors thought they couldn’t even refer to God in their textbook. So they ended up telling their readers that the Pilgrims were giving thanks to the Indians. (Huh?)

Personally, I think Thanksgiving is (and was) about giving thanks to God, but I am too eclectic nowadays to confine my giving of thanks to the capricious Calvinist God of the Pilgrims. So in the spirit of Pascal, who placed a wager on the Christian god, I'm putting a marker down, too. But why confine your wager to one divinity? Here is my own Thanksgiving litany to the gods.

To Kali, black goddess of fierce justice, thanks for scaring me to death. I know the skulls around your neck and the blood dripping from your mouth frighten a lot of people, but somebody has to lord over the cremation grounds, and I'm happy to have it be you (really).

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

To Christopher Hitchens (the closest my atheist friends get to a divinity nowadays), thanks for channeling Kali and for not converting on your deathbed (right?). “I hate the pack of gods,” wrote Marx. You showed us what that passion sounds like.

To Allah, thanks for reminding us of the gap between God and human beings. And for being the word Arab Christians use for "God," too. And for this Thanksgiving day verse from the Quran: “Give food, for the love of Him, to the needy, the orphan, the captive” (76:8).

To the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, thanks for the rhythm of exile and return, for teaching us how to argue and for the biblical book of Ecclesiastes (Oh, and Bob Dylan and Woody Allen, of course).

To Jesus, thanks for taking on a human body and for loving Mary and for "Godspell" and for saving that wedding day by turning that water into wine. I will raise a glass (or two) to you this Thanksgiving.

To the Amida Buddha of Infinite Light, thanks for spinning the Pure Land out of your grace and your imagination, and for being at the end of the tunnel in those near-death experiences. Luther said all we need is faith. Thanks for not even requiring that.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

To Krishna, thanks for reminding us that the gods can be playful (and mischievous), too. And for this grand promise from the Hindu scripture the "Bhagavad Gita" (4:11): “In whatsoever way any come to Me, in that same way I grant them favor.”

Finally, to the unknown gods (and anti-gods) of East and West, thanks for your mysterious silence (and for keeping the comments below relatively civil).

Om, Amen, Ahhhh!

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Stephen Prothero.

'Our fathers who died and art in heaven, hallowed be their names. Their kingdoms came in God's will be so done upon earth as it is in the heavens. Give us all this day our daily breads and forgive all our tresspassings as others also should we forgive those most need of our mercies. May peace be upon those making peacefulness their wanting of alms be ever secured. Blessed are the peacemakers for theirs are of righteousness sakes. Shalom my brothers and sisters, shalom.

Why not thank the Wampanoag, indians is an incorrect term, for they were behaving proper toward their fellow human being. And saying thank you to people who graciously invite u in their home is proper manners, not commit war, genocide & the most infamous land grab ever.

But...Thanksgiving started in this country as a specifically *Christian* holiday...sort of like Christmas. You don't have to be a Christian to be thankful, but to co-opt this holiday to praise a pantheon of other gods is revisionist. It strikes me as an attempt to re-write what *actually* happened.

    November 22, 2012 at 2:39 pm |
    • George Hale

Wait – you're defending Thanksgiving and Christmas as fundamentally Christian and complaining about co-opting the Christian holidays for others? Are you seriously that ignorant of your own holidays? If you celebrate Christmas in December, put up a tree, have a yule log, or any other of myriad Christmas traditions, you are participating in the co-opted practices of other beliefs.

      November 22, 2012 at 3:01 pm |
    • Peteyroo

Christmas has been co-opted and only marginally religious these days. I believe Thanksgiving is there too. Now if we can just get religion out of Easter!

    • Greyhound37

It's terrible when one tries to co-op the religious holidays of another group, isn't it?

What do you say you Christians give Dec 25 back to Mithra and go back to when your particular saviour character was more likely born – in the Spring. Oh, and give the evergreens back to the pagans.

    • PaganScorp

You're kidding right? You're making some kind of a joke to see who's really paying attention. To see if they actually read what you said. You're either kidding or one of the most uneducated people ever. If you want to celebrate your Jesus' birthday, do it sometime in the spring when he was actually born. Also, stop making him a long haired white guy. He was born in the east so he would be olive skinned. Head lice was rampant back then so he would have had shorter hair. Stop showing him on a cross (how would you like to be constantly reminded of the worse day in your life) It's fine that you want to believe, but try to educate yourself a little more on what you believe in.

Well, i was deleted for mentioning slaves on Plimoth plantation. For decrying the racist term "indian."As opposed to the First Nations peoples. the term now mandated by the Canadian parliament. The fact that the Wampanoag nation people now mourn on this "holiday." That consumerism ("black friday") is fast taking over this "celebration. The child's book, Molly's pilgrim, and its subtle racism. Whadaya want the usual mindless blathering found here. Someone has to indicate it's possible to be profound and thoughtful. My Word Which Lays Upon Truths Opening the Door

Can one body of people not change that which was declared to be biblically so written as actually being fortuitous? Wherein the biblical can prophesying though forewarned be justifiably outwitted should warnings be prophetically heeded? Is it righteously endeavouring to wantonly fulfill a religiously and historically imbedded future thought just because it is so 'Jewishly' written? Should not a people of uncommon intellect become intellectually mundane just to satisfy Jewish based biblical prophecies? Wherethen lays the lands ending of aberrance foretold of thru wanton Jewish means? Who are the lands beneficiaries should war bemoan us and all do die out due and thru warring? Hell knows no other ways but to willfully and wantonly fulfill the Word, the Jewish Gospel!

Manly made Gods in name onliness euphemisms have become false-cherishing Jew-based sublimations not to be subliminally outdone by anothers' naming of God such as Elohim or Jehovah or Yahweh etc etc. Is it not of more-so importance to write or make small-talk toward others to 'menstruatively' condition the morals of youthfulness than to bicker and banter about as elder-aged 'gossipers' seeking shadowy umbrage praises of youth-based others to justify their own elder selfishness sakes? Who therefore is to be pitied more, the ones behind the podiums with playing cards to be read or the audience who does sit in waiting to be as leavened bread ever to rise up in unison?

The christian word of truth being the wordage of condensed obligatory jewish gospels to which are now seemingly way too varyingly many to be had and can no more be held up in tumbling weighty agonies of patronized self-righteousness sakes. To the christians; "The troubles with faithless and unfaithful trinitarians, those who belly-up to one god times three is they read but only into it and get very little out of what they made their own 'gospel' in treacherously unsound morbid amplifications of unblessed pleasings by the manly adaptive and grudgingly adopted childishness views of Godly egregious moralisms."

For the Jew-based christian rudimentary and timid preaching practices in emotionalized devilish tongues beatifies only the lecherously dumb-hearted relics, those aged heartburns of their jew-based christiandumbness's idiosyncratic marmoset-like redundancies. Their godly embittered and fetteringly spiritualized moralisms are but self-centered and selfishly censored upon age old redundant principles that are remorsefully archaic in round-about sciatic cultured replicants behooving those old fuddy duddies who fumble ever for their next glass worth of wine! Drunk and in temperamental stupors are the emotionally fallen within biblically jewish-rooted christiandumbs folds becoming sciatic pragmatisms unworthy of even one toasting for, but rather for the many to be rightly toasting against!"

In retrospect, godlessness bemoans and bewails the ungodly. For these are the choices from which commonwealth atheists do make felt upon their retrospective and habitual senses denying the goodly upon ever moving towards wanting ways of godly intent. Many young-bucks of godlessness and of ungodliness sensually tenders to avail themselves with the nailed doldrums' sciatica of unsounding foolerie.

The godless and ungodly do abound with much societally impractical unpleasantries toward the abaters' abatements of commonly wanton desired abilities against them and vice versa. Ungodly and godless beings of smirkish violaters of rooted randomized intention-abilities are meant only as servile austerities of servantile redundant subversions of illed mannerisms. The subversive deniabilities forlorned pleasings are not without adjusted ill-based compromising or so they do entail and also do weave upon the where-with-all of seasoned papacies to themselves be against recognizable irreversable abilities mandated as sin and sinfulness. Why blame the sinners or even the sins when all have and still so do?

Likewise, the mockeries of these godless and ungodly do revile against the goodly who themselves tenderly believe upon godly importance. The goodly ones may well live on borrowed times to pass all and give bridled leverages onto every generation's young-aged continuations. How else could life ruly end and real living thusly begin? To believe or not believe for these are material Life's choices. Christ Jesus came to this world to condemn it and yet did He come here to also show how tenderly are generous mercies shown upon those otherly ones being most merciful to others. Who does so shower mercy to be so freely given to those being most merciful? Again I do say to believe or not believe for these are Life's choices. Still yet and forever onwards many generations are to be favoringly found in many a mercies, for the mercifilled ambiences are one of our Life's greatest treasures and livings' sweetest and unending social rewards upon the most needy of the poorest in spirits.

For God does never change His spiritualism and His Holy Spirit is the Great Sea of Absolute Nothingness! Always was and is and will forever be no matter what smatterings of materialized shapes do tend to seemingly clutter up His unending spiritual abundancy! It is truth that the real sons of God has troubles within the fractal paradigms of the body's 'inwardnessed' inter-cellular cosmologies as occasional protrutions of insolent 'activists' that are sometimes revolting against the grains of our embodied sanctifications creating many unrighteous undulations of physical travesties not uncommonly being viewed by us celestial beings as being viral and even bacteriological undoings upon one's bodies in the way we understand things to be and therefore become.

What was first made can never again become that which was made first for only in varying differential constructs can another thing be made upon ever to be outdone against that which was firstly made. The pillars of all Life's DNA, the in-celled spirals of all celestial life forms and formations bitten fomentations is where God's Sons and their given wives are taken in as residents there abouts.

Forgoing much, the variegated Kingdom Domains of God lay where-from and within the inner structures of All Manner of Celestial Life and thusly does mankind share in the abundancies of living fractals within inward Inter-Cellular Cosmological Paradigms. As mankinds' continual hunting for the codifying of Life's laws in Cellularized Cosmologic Confinements, manliness ever does continue onwards. We may well become ever aware of the once long ago forgotten and now duly hidden things. Yet, many folks will ever become unendingly complacent upon the societal grandeurs for selfish wantings sakes, trying to avail themselves valiantly never to be outdone by those who tend to be in broadest simplifications adjuring for peaceful resolutions. May we be merciful upon those who deservedly aspire to be merciful toward others. In godly spiritualisms do we seek the folding and refolding venues of life's yearnings.

The "blood" of Christ Jesus will ever be an acclaiming conscription thru relief-based emotional prescriptions foresaken though not by the unrelenting mobs nor even the jealous masses allotments sakes! Only thru the individualists coming to self-minding emotional terms can one's sinfilled detriments be erased! The onguard podium does entertain the amassed audiences no matter the speaker who acclaims their wordages to be more then mere words but are as a model of enlightenment to be ever made as thoughtful conscious recognitions of after the speaker does close out their speech! How soon one forgets and how long one does dwell.

A scattering smatterings of variegated opulence-ended minds are systolically deemed feeble-minded 'religiosofic' hoistings unendingly careening upon many culpable minds in these trying days' Age. Leave therefore your harshest social wantings alone and onwardly unprovable devotional yearnings behind you and never take wind of one's earnest psychic longings for the weightiness of one's theatrical longings will smite even the most goodly intentioned influential beings.

Carry away nothing spiritually endorsed and leave behind ones wantonness sakes, ever to make headway to the places inside one's psychic-being and do not keep ajar your heart's door for many will want to enter in and should not. Your loving of this Life is but for the world to have needs of and you should not heed the rumors from others as to just what is truly righteous. It is therefore best for mankind to simmer in their yet unfinished juvenile pottages hardly ever rationalizingly 'assaying' one's diffuse detriments, the very smallest of life's grains. As smitten breeds, our cynical splendors reveal one's characters to be traitorous to one's self and others analogous foldedness. Where then does true life really end and real living truly begin?

For this world's mobs and masses knows not the time nor the place for the 'sons of man' and their coming upon this world to make judgement upon the world's governances. Behold you now for the time is now upon mankind for these 'sons of man' are now placed in and upon mankind's midsts. They do see much societal and governing goodness upon many lands and the one son does also see much bitterness as well. These sons of but a simple minded fatherly man knows well the bitterness of social torments and much of the worldly social egress bewailing all lots in Life's so treasured troves of illusiveness.

The tears that flow from this man's sons are bitter and with much consolations gathering in their togetherness as wasted nuptials being leveraged upon by time's undoing stature. The angst of one man's sired sons is but now the two-folded spark of leavened thanksgiving and no more trickeries to be unfolded upon mankind! No more is unsoundness of livid Life being one sons' ever yeilding and compromisable beatifications while the otherly son does wastefully partake of the brewed measures. As sons of loving parents, do we live on and towards finality's ends.

Though my sights are now set, my heart maintains a pleasingly maleable notion of motion. I do so love my brother and other humane fledglings of matured soundings beyond the bounds of the wateriness-afforded baptismal complacencies. My brother and I are one blood and nothing dare comes between us lest they be but friendly natured. God as my soul's judge and Christ Jesus is my publicity's defender regarding my ongoing maleable heartfelt momentums! I am hell-bent to be my brother's keeper foresaking the watery conditionings of religious persuasion and even societal persecutions.

May no man nor any women scorn my lot in this Life's consortium in brotherly assets. God forbade me in my time's past and did allow me the freedoms to be hung with! May the son and brother, being born of one common-placed man named Joseph and mother named Mary, be never-no-more to be found unwilling to set things right no matter what was so done in time's long ago passing momentums!

Who before this day's Age was found to be those worthy of goodly and even Godly praises? Who after us will find peace set unerringly before them? Who in today;s timeline are these "sons of man" that many should fear them for their yet unworthiness stance? Who above can see the below? Who that is below can see what be above? From the very smallest and lowest crevice to the most high chasms, the Sea of Nothingness is the Holy Spirit of God.

May the elemental gods, the true sons of God find favor in these cherishing crevice-found sons of a common life man that they may not be afflicted with this world's power based truancies but rather they should carry upon them their angst from their manhoods till their natural deaths. Yes are my words are so written as being of deism but I harken upon deism as being God's unending sons, those elemental gods who did make in guilts shamefulness their long ago taking of mankind's women, an unjust travesty to be once warned against but now acclaimed as high minded treasurings! For in God's Holy Seas of Nothingness are all things made cleanly and cleared up thru leveraging timeliness.

Only God's sons, being the elemental gods could make a tree real and in their unending lengths of continuous progressive natures did they create mankind's celestial presence. God in His Holy Spirit being the absolution of all and every considerations makes well all things be they physical or be they minded in thoughtfulness considerations.

The Holy Spirit of Almighy God is the Great Seas of Nothingness which where-in does abound flowing streams of the nothingness's unending pleasentries thru apparelled God's celestially adopted sons-beings toward our ever becoming cleansed in opulenced photogenetic conditionings. In all godly places are many structured things so well placed. Whomever can say differently the amassing of things that are bound by His gravimetric conditions? Who dare I ask?

What I do in earnestness spiritually believe in is that the family members of God including the physical God Himself lives upon the very first created cosmos which is the inner cosmos. Many people in the scientific communes here do call this inner cosmos as being atomic in nature. Our being here upon the celestial or outer cosmos is due our being cast from or made out of the inner cosmos smatterings so delicately placed. For many reasons of science are less well known by the people's modulating masses. Some of us were cast out of and made with this inner cosmos smatterings based upon our inwardly conditionalized servile faulterings of unforeseen waywardness while we were yet in and of God's husbandries within the fractal paradigms of inner-cosmological securements and some were made by God's husbandry willingly wanting to be or become one of God's buildings to continue to do our Lord's Will here upon this celestial realm of gigantic life forms.

Whereupon one's insides are living many families of God's members and servants and otherly holiness brethrens. We live upon this celestal realm or domain doing what we 'weightingly' want while many of us unify ourselves in the societal goodnesses of the communally reigned in as being church communities. My way is not your ways nor are others' ways our ways or your ways and yet when we cross paths we receive each other and after a spell do walk on and are parted. Therefore, walk placidly amid the noisiness and the wasteful ever being mindful of the peace one finds in finding peace there about.

Prayers or praying about things gives one suggestive times to be reflective upon the things being prayed upon and for. Many times prayers can be thought thru and found to be in no need of one's sonly god in you. 1Corinthians 3:9 "For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, [ye are] God's building!" Our labouring together with God imparts upon the mind's eyes that we have been given an equal footing with God and are left to our own means and where-with-all to live out our life no matter what befalls us. Death befalls all things celestially living. Even so, death reigns within the Kingdom Domains of God where does reside all God's sons and His daughters-in-law.

Is God to be made a mockery by those who tend to instill anti-leveraged pragmatisms? Are we to believe in the godless and the ungodly who care little about religions' piecemeal subjectives' ordinates?

Jesus, was the very first of many immeasurable 'elemental beings' thusly declared as being gods in their ownliness ways and as was In the Beginning, Christ Jesus was once the elemental king of all the elemental gods. Jesus, in His cunning, thru Chaotic manueverings, established the gravimetrical waves for the elementals lusts to gather in semi-lucid broods thusly was formed the beginnings of celestial nebulas.

As time did force the celestial nebulas to progressively surround the gravimetric oscillations where from did come about galactic formations of the elementals' began sounding theiralarms against godly beratements. As systems of photonic elementals, the infinitesimally finite elemental gods did forcibly shower the solarized planetary systems with their 'photonically' embodied beings. And here in the now times, we are but made from the photonic elementals' stillnesses, the Stardusts of the Ages.

My internal "Physicist" knows very well the quantum physicalities of natured atomically folded stimulations. I call this "Physicist" my body's real son of God. He has strewn his rivers from the Great Seas of Nothingness, the Holy Spirit of Godliness with 'photogeneticisms' or the leveraging stillness of the smattered photons creating all manner of the first 'atom-like' materialized smatterings needed to become thru timeliness all the elementals calibrationed members of our stupendously formalized and declared 'Periodic Table' of Materialized Photogenetics.

Microbiologists are today's inward inner-seeking astrophysicists for they are searching among our embodied core-roots of celled-in cellularized manifestations to find answers regarding biological fractals of inner-cosmological paradigms. We truly are God's buildings! Some of our bodies are as condominiums and some are for storage purposes and some are the temples where God's family members and his servants and otherly holy brethrens do pay homages within all embodied celestial manifestations of living organisms. 1Corinthians 3:9 "For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, [ye are] God's building!"

Sciences are but the dreams seldomly dreamt by far too few people. Spirit endowed commoners and placid atheists may well have treasure troves of good books that they hardly ever do read and such books are hardly ever science oriented books. Many folks, be they spiritual or not aren't too intellectually assimilated yet many people do daringly stand by many scientists teachings without one iota of tenured deniabilities to rationally question but nevertheless they do condone in complacency many science oriented theoretics.

Even the socialized spiritual commoner seldom reads nor truly dares to soundly understand too much where scientific reasoning does so apply. Who among us knows about 'Self-Similar Cosmological Paradigms'? Does anyone dare open the doors to Cosmologies of the Fractal kinds? Who among us truly understands that energy equals mass times light squared and its' true potential? What is the point in adoring scientific reasoning when or if one's IQ level can be counted on ten fingers? Thusly does the commonfolk idly make conversation their recognizable-to-them nefariousness means.

In all of that you said nothing. So you believe in god.....good for you. Here is the truth, although you most likely wont listen based on your long winded comment......religion itself is a sin. It is based in greed, lust, glutony, and hate. If there is a god, and I have no idea if one exists or not, he would be very disapointed in religion as a whole. The bible itself is the largest work of fiction on the planet. Page after page of make believe and manipulation. The christian bible is based on a series of scrolls, one of which is the dead sea scrolls. In the late 90's the scroll was uncovered, and can be viewed at the Smithsonian. The biblical translation of the scroll talks of god, and stories of creation and godly hierarchy. The literal translation of the scroll never once mentions god, jesus, the holy trinity........it doesn't even metion a higher power. It simply states how to live your life for others and to be a good and selfless person. The men who wrote the book took the liberty to create a something that was completely false and evil. Yes, the bible is evil. If god exists he would renounce the book and ban its use. Religion was created by governments, not by holy men, or a god. Every religion is regionally based. Each region saw what was happening in other regions and copied the formula, although twisting meanings and rituals to fit their purpose. That is why there are so many religions, so many different gods, and the intolerance between them all. I fully understand that a lot of people use religion as a tool for inner peace, and that is fine, but we as a species take it too far.

      JDC et al,

Read your response. If only you would read my words you just might comprehend my luster but alas you are lacking and am in shortness of thoughts. Oh well. Another dollar in my pledge drawers. BTW, "May your day of Thanksgiving be remembered lest you forget it is a holiday of sorts." :-) :-( :-)

Exactly what they are: made up words, put nonsensically in a row, that makes no sense to anyone other than the author. If your intention is to make a person think, you've succeeded: I think you're fvcking nuts! My eyes glaze over when I see a post by you, and I generally skip over your posts; I doubt that is your intention, but that is the result.

But you don't have to choose between wisdom and religion. Your attempt at creating a false logic doesn't play.

If there is God that created everything, Then God must be perfect. If God is perfec, then everything God creates must also be perfect.

    • OpposingView

Herchanto... God is indeed perfect. And everything he created was also perfect. That's why God stated that Lucifer was "perfect in beauty" – that is, until iniquity was found in him – at that point he became Satan. The scriptures also state that God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. It seems like a paradox, but the reason you don't understand it is because God doesn't look at things the same way we do, and the logic of man and the logic of God always has been diametrically opposed...

      November 22, 2012 at 1:19 pm |
    • TAJW

Don't try to use circular logic on us. Whatever God creates is perfect, as he wishes. But he also created humans to have free will, and we can make bad choices, which we certainly do.

    • cheese

let's see.. we can scare them if they question the nonsense by making them feel like a anti-christ. We can create excuses using logic that is also magical. How odd a god who was so perfect couldn't seem to be convincing enough to man, but left man to prove him. Yet no man has ever spoken to a god nor seen one. No proof what-so-ever! And this same all powerful god created a universe in 6 days. Why not instantly? And why was he tired on the 7th day. After all it's a pretty big universe? If that hasn't got man made written all over it.

Here's the deal, man created god and everything man says about god has to be interpreted by other men who didn't write the man made stuff in the first place. Wow, go figure..

opposingview.....quoting scripture is useless because none of it is real. Everything in every bible was written by man, and not the men you think wrote it. The christian bible was based on a series of scrolls that were written over a few hundred years, then compiled to create a complete work. The problem with that is that the translations were loose at best. The Dead Sea Scrolls for instance, was the basis for a large portion of the bible, yet it never mentions god, jesus, the holy trinity, or any higher being. The literal translation simply states that you should live your life for others and be as well rounded a person as you can be. The scriptures you quote were never in any of those scrolls. They were written by men who sought control and power. The Book of Eli is a good example of that. The book has so much power over the people that they will believe anything so long as it comes from the book. Unfortunately very few people ever researched if anything in the book was legitimate. Creationalism is a perfect example. There was never an Adam and Eve. THere was never a whale that swallowed Jonah. There was no burning bush. Those stories were from the imaginations of men who wanted to control the poor. I give thanks today for the ability to think for myself and not be under the spell of religious control!!

ah, then why isn't man perfect? excuse is – god gave man free will. Yet god never told anyone that, except in mans interpretations of other mens writings. Free-will? Then why pray for stuff? Because that changes others free will. In the end, the god stuff is humorous and cannot be proven.

I will be giving thanks to the SUN not the SON. If it weren't for that enormous hug ball of gas none of us would exist and that is a concrete fact that has nothing to do with faith but pure rock solid TRUTH! THE LAW of CONSERVATION OF ENERGY states that energy can not be created or destroyed,. Many of us humans like to dress up that law in a long beard blue eyed robe wearing guy who talks of only loving all as he loves himnself or maybe some Sumo Wrestling look alike cat with an iconic beer gut that talks of enlightenment thus giving in to the power of positive thought and stay clear from the negative thinking that some how compels mankind to drop bombs or take by force what never was his in the first place from those who were willing to SHARE!!!! I tell those show me your GOD because I can always show you mine. So the next time you feel the warmth on your face coming from that Hydrogen and Helium ball of gas, Say thank you for creating every natural single known element in the universe for if not for the sun NONE OF US WOULD EXIST and if the many STARS/SUNS would not exist then our universe would be empty space.

      PRAISE THE SUN!!!!

Vitiating "prof" P's commentary with a prayer for the 21st century:(only for the new members of this blog)

The Apostles' Creed 2012 (updated by yours truly based on the studies of NT historians and theologians of the past 200 years)

Should I believe in a god whose existence cannot be proven
and said god if he/she/it exists resides in an unproven,
human-created, spirit state of bliss called heaven?????

I believe there was a 1st century CE, Jewish, simple,
preacher-man who was conceived by a Jewish carpenter
named Joseph living in Nazareth and born of a young Jewish
girl named Mary. (Some say he was a mamzer.)

Jesus was summarily crucified for being a temple rabble-rouser by
the Roman troops in Jerusalem serving under Pontius Pilate,

He was buried in an unmarked grave and still lies
a-mouldering in the ground somewhere outside of
    Jerusalem.

Said Jesus' story was embellished and "mythicized" by
many semi-fiction writers. A bodily resurrection and
ascension stories were promulgated to compete with the
Caesar myths. Said stories were so popular that they
grew into a religion known today as Catholicism/Christianity
and featuring dark-age, daily wine to blood and bread to body rituals
called the eucharistic sacrifice of the non-atoning Jesus.

    Amen
