Many religions with long traditions maintain celibacy (except Islam): Buddhist monks, Shintoism, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, even the priestess in the old Greek religion, the Aztecs, Mayans, etc. I don't understand why many people have objections against celibacy in the Catholic Church but NOT in Buddhism.

Judaism doesn't have a central role for celibacy either. In Hinduism celibacy is more a role for those who have withdrawn from the world, and often for older members.

I'm not saying it's always a bad thing, though most research would find the se_xually active more healthy. We also need to check the history on some of these celibate orders. In southeast Asia, for instance, entry into a monastery was not always optional, and even today boys in some places are sent away as young as 10 and laws have had to be drawn up to stop this practice.

Want further proof of how twisted Douglas is?

"Numbers 25 tells how the Midianites, specifically the women, led the Israelites astray into worshiping the Baal or Peor. The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He struck them with a plague. Remember Baal worship involved throwing children into a burning metal furnace and fornicating before it. Men defecated before the fire and women raised their robes to reveal their mons before the fire.
      This outrage angered God."

      Here is Numbers 25.

25 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, 2 who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the Lord’s anger burned against them.

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the Lord’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”

5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”

6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; 9 but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.

10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”

14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.

16 The Lord said to Moses, 17 “Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”

Now where is all of the garbage Douglas was referencing? Unless he made a VERY thorough study of the practices of Baal worship, which he didn't give a citation for, nowhere in this chapter do we see any evidence of pooping by fires and women waving their naughty bits...further proving that Douglas is excessively obsessed sexually ...he manages to make the Bible sound as dirty as his minds seems to be. What a dirty minded pervert.

Really Austin, I wouldn't expect anything less of you.
My observation is valid, and it stands.
Those who preach the Bible need to preach it accurately, without embellishments to make it seem more titilating. If one cannot do this, one is not truly spreading the word of the Lord, but perpetuating the view that some Christians are lying deceivers as they accuse others of being, and I include you in that number of accusers.

    @ Bob,

    In regard to Numbers 31:17-18,

To understand this passage, one must realize that Numbers 25 is the “prequel” to the events recorded in Numbers 31. Numbers 25 tells how the Midianites, specifically the women, led the Israelites astray into worshiping the Baal or Peor. The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He struck them with a plague. Remember Baal worship involved throwing children into a burning metal furnace and fornicating before it. Men defecated before the fire and women raised their robes to reveal their mons before the fire.
    This outrage angered God.

    In regard to Deuteronomy 13:16,

The human relationships that exist between individuals who are physically kin to each other can, indeed, be precious and beautiful. In fact, God was responsible for creating the family framework (Genesis 2:24). Ideally, He intends for people to experience the warm, tender ties of blood kin and the multiple blessings associated with such ties.

Perspective is lost, however, when physical ties are permitted to interfere with obedience to God. God’s point is missed when a higher premium is placed on physical family than on spiritual family, when a Christian fails to relish to a greater degree association with the family of God—the church. The Bible teaches that Christians should not hesitate for a moment to relinquish fleshly relationships if it becomes necessary to do so in order to put God first (Luke 14:20,24).

    In regard to Revelation 2:23,

The judgment of God often serves two purposes: to chasten or eliminate the one being judged; and to serve as warning to others who might otherwise follow a similar path (Deu. Deu. 17:13; Deu. 19:20; Deu. 21:21). The one who led the children of Israel to worship other gods was to be stoned so “all Israel shall hear and fear, and not again do such wickedness as this among you” (Deu. Deu. 13:11). When judgment fell upon Ananias and Sapphira, “great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things” (Acts Acts 5:11).

    In regard to Leviticus 25:44-45,

Property in foreign slaves is here distinctly permitted. It was a patriarchal custom Genesis 17:12. Such slaves might be captives taken in war (Numbers 31:6 following; Deuteronomy 20:14), or those consigned to slavery for their crimes, or those purchased of foreign slave-dealers. The price of a slave is supposed to have varied from thirty to fifty shekels. See Leviticus 27:3-4, note; Exodus 21:32, note; Zechariah 11:12-13, note; Matthew 26:15, note. It was the object of Moses, not at once to do away with slavery, but to discourage and to mitigate it. The Law would not suffer it to be forgotten that the slave was a man, and protected him in every way that was possible at the time against the injustice or cruelty of his master. See the notes at Exodus 21.

Jesus came to fulfill the prophecy of the Old Testament.

There is no need to sacrifice animals anymore because Jesus sacrificed himself for us because he loves us so much.

    That is a loving God.

Seek him and you will find peace.

      Superstition!

Why the fuck do you religies place so much emphasis on a 2000-year-old book that one needs to study, interpret and twist around in order to get any meaning out of? Why doesn't somebody just rewrite the damn thing to make sense (if that's even possible) so there's no confusion or ambiguities? I still wouldn't believe any of it, but at least you biblebabblers would take a lot less heat when you try to explain to "new converts."

Celibacy is a refuge from fornication.

Support celibate priests and let them know you appreciate the example they are setting for the
    local parish.

When reviewing the application of celibacy in everyday life, we need to test the concept in light of scripture.

Scripture remains the baseline reference point for all things Christian.

Looking further still, we seek passages where Jesus spoke, for a benchmark definition of the
    concept of celibacy.

Turning to Matthew 19 we find our answers.

Point 1: Jesus defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Point 2: Jesus says that some will remain celibate because they are born not for marriage
(lacking the desire for the opposite s-e-x partner or through physical inability (castration/injury/birth defect to consumate the relationship)

Point 3: Jesus states that some will remain celibate for the kingdom of heaven. This is the role Jesus
expects the priest to play and this is reiterated by Paul later on when he talks about giving oneself
fully to God for the benefit of the Kingdom.

From this baseline we can conclude that gay marriage is contrary to scriptural guidance and that celibacy
is advisable and proper for priests to practice.

Using scripture as a baseline reference, we can clearly see what we should be doing as Christians to
fulfill the expectations Jesus has for us.

So applying your #2 to priests, are they all gay or are they all deformed in some way?

      March 2, 2013 at 7:48 pm |
    • Douglas

      Damocles,

Point 3 is what applies to priests.
Let's not confuse apples and oranges.
Jesus was very specific in his definition.

      Thanks for your interest.

      Best,
      Douglas

Douglas, since you are so bent on referencing your murderous, vicious, bigoted god's supposed intentions for us, let's have a closer look at some of the awful acts your entire book of horrors says that god demands us to do or does himself:

      Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 13:6 – “If your brother, your mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul entice you secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods … you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death”

Revelations 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

      Leviticus 25
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.
45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.
46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

Ask the questions. Break the chains. Join the movement.
Be free of Christianity and other superstitions.

Well, yeah! Celibacy should end. However they're still IDOLATERS who must REPENT of their IDOLATRY among other things. But at least they'll be able to have S E X as Normal MEN with Mandy instead of with Handy.

Of course some of them will still be HO*MO*SE*XUAL and Pedophiles and will choose to marry their boyfriends, and take advantage of children, which of course is worse than having S E X with Handy.

They'll still Fornicate and commit Adultery, which they have done for centuries anyways.

So allowing the priests to marry is a good thing, but does not change the Fundamental Issue of the Aberrant and Abhorrent IDOLATRY. Much less is going to change the Facts, that the RCC IS NOT really a church or THE Church as per the Scriptures. But instead is and has always been a Politico-Religious Organization with many Financial and Social interests in the World.

A series of studies recently published in the prestigious Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2012 found higher levels of homophobia in individuals with unacknowledged attractions to the same sex, particularly when they grew up with authoritarian parents who also held homophobic attitudes. In the university press release "Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves." In the same release "In many cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are turning this internal conflict outward."

Celibacy provides a refuge from the sin of fornication

Today, the hyper – s-e-x-u-a-l saturation of social media with filth, urging
people young and old to fornicate at will, has spawned all manner of unspeakable acts
from teachers engaged in s-e-x with pupils to shameless gay men strolling n-a-k-e-d in front
of an elementary school out in San Francisco.

The devil is gleeful at the souls he can harvest for the one way trip to the furnace.

Reach out to the fornicators and let them know that this Lenten season is an ideal time to repent,
jettison fornication, and seek salvation and healing.

Now that the topic of celibacy is front and center, encourage sinners to strive for victory over death

Douglas – you've won no debate. You've taken a story, and from it you have extrapolated exactly what you wished to see. There was never anyone parading in front of a school, the story as YOU report it IS urban legend. Next.

      Douglas,

The article says ( notice exact quote):
[Mayor Lee said,] "I can understand people like sunbathing, but let's have a level of balance here," he said. "On behalf of kids who shouldn't really have to view this, and on behalf of parents that walk their kids to school, we're going to create those balanced constrictions."

The area in question is where (some) parents might walk their kids to school.

That said, these guys (gay or straight) are simply exhibitionists. "Sunbathing" in San Francisco? Hah! I've seldom even so much as taken off my jacket in that foggy, damp, windy, chilly town!

Celibates are still IDOLATERS, practicing IDOLATRY which is a SIN and a very serious one BTW. Celibates still commit other Serious SINS, like Coveting, Dishonor Parents, Murder, Stealing and Slander.

Abstinence would be a far BETTER and wider Concept than Celibacy. For in as much as we're Commanded in Scriptures to FLEE from Fornication and ALL SE XUAL Perversions, we're also told with the same strong terms to FLEE from IDOLATRY. So YES FLEE from Adultery, Fornication et al but also and EQUALLY FLEE from IDOLATRY.

But just don't Flee anywhere aimlessly, Flee from Idolatry and Se-xual sins yes, but FLEE and take Refuge in Christ alone.

In the Holy Scriptures we are Admonished, Advised even Commanded to FLEE from two things, IDOLATRY and SE*XUAL Deviations, Immorality, Passions and Perversions. FLEE from those and you will be doing Good for yourself and others. Then add to that Faith in Jesus the Christ the Son of God and you'll be Saved from the Final Judgment of God.

Hallucinations – the person has invisible friends who (s)he insists are real, and to whom (s)he speaks daily, even though nobody can actually see or hear these friends.

Delusions – the patient believes that the invisible friends have magical powers to make them rich, cure cancer, bring about world peace, and will do so eventually if asked.

Denial/Inability to learn – though the requests for world peace remain unanswered, even after hundreds of years, the patients persist with the praying behaviour, each time expecting different results.

Inability to distinguish fantasy from reality – the beliefs are contingent upon ancient mythology being accepted as historical fact.

Paranoia – the belief that anyone who does not share their supernatural concept of reality is "evil," "the devil," "an agent of Satan".

Emotional abuse – religious concepts such as sin, hell, cause feelings of guilt, shame, fear, and other types of emotional "baggage" which can scar the psyche for life.

So... then we can conclude that End Religion is Hallucinating, Deluded and in Denial, because of her/his Inability to Comprehend and Learn the Difference between Right and Wrong. This is due to

In her/his Paranoia he sees Religious and people of Faith chasing him or against her/him. Therefore in his Delusions he/she or whatever, sees itself as riding an imaginary white horse battling against the forces of Good.

Feeling Emotionally abused because he/she/it is part of a Minority in the Country and in the World. He/she/ unable to do any good, say any good, turns to imaginary and new definitions of her/his/its own making.

End Religion's Condition is due to an Amoral Character that is Incompetent and Unable to Discern between Right and Wrong. In his Short Sightedness, Moral Ineptness and Intellectual Insufficiencies he/she/it sees itself as ahead of those he disagrees with; simply because he/she/it disagrees with them.

Because he/she/it doesn't sees the Creator of ALL Created things he/she/it feels disappointed, believing he/she/it was EN TI TLED to such. In his Mental Ineptness he/she/it Fails time and again to see Creation itself as the Evidence.

Anyone, anybody who PRETENDS to act Surprised or Shock at all the things that have come to light in the last 20 years is being a Hypocrite. All of those things have been going on for Centuries. Is nothing new for those who have some basic knowledge of the RCC its Operatives and its MODUS OPERANDI. So Stop being a HYPOCRITE and an IDOLATER. REPENT of your evil deeds and believe in Jesus the Christ. Flee from IDOLATRY as from s*exual Perversions is the Admonition of Scriptures.

    March 1, 2013 at 2:53 pm |

Well, yeah! Celibacy should end. However that's not going to make them better men. They're still IDOLATERS who must REPENT of their IDOLATRY among other things. But at least they'll be able to have S E X as MEN with Mandy instead of with Handy. Of course some of them will still be HO*MO*SE*XUAL and will choose to marry their boyfriends, which of course is worse than having S E X with Handy. They'll still Fornicate and commit Adultery, which they have done for centuries anyways.

      Akira,

You need to get your head out of the sand. You Insist and Persist in denying something that anyone with a basic and minimum understanding of the Scriptures knows. It's also just plain common sense.

To Love people does NOT means to become an Accomplice, Abettor and partaker in their wrongdoings. What is wrong is wrong period, end of story and calling it out DOES NOT means hatred.

Being or becoming an abettor of wrongdoing is not a demonstration of Love. It is instead a demonstration of carelessness, thoughtlessness, lack of discernment between what is right and wrong and Ignorance.

Some believe that celibacy is appropriate for certain people, or for certain positions. It's ridiculous. Celibacy is unnatural and will continue to cause problems for the religious institutions that employ it.

Many of the people from these same institutions advocate against abortion, but don't understand the realistic benefit of the morning after pill or even basic contraception; their unrealistic wishful thinking is causing the death of many at the hands of disease. Realistically, many abortions could be avoided if a morning-after pill would not is not viewed as such an evil option. Many of these same people bring children into the world at a high pace, and then would prefer that the rest of society take over and educate their children in their particular brand of religion when they don't plan well and don't want to violate their beliefs.

In the U.S. recently we learned of the head of LCMS chastising a minister of that church for participating in a joint service for the victims of the Newtown school shooting.

One sect calls homosexuality an abomination while the next one in the same denomination is already performing gay marriage.

One sect, the Westboro Baptist Church believes Americans are being killed at war because America is too kind to "fags".

One sect believes that Jesus and Satan were brothers and that Christ will return to Jerusalem AND Jackson County, Missouri.

One sect believes women to be subservient, while another sect in the same denomination promotes equality between the sexes.

Conflicted right from the very beginning, Christianity continues to splinter and create divisions and more extremism as it goes.

WHY? Is it that catholics "revere" the pope as if he were God? Many get extremely emotional just seeing him, bow at his presence, kiss his hand or ring, take his word as if it is from God, admire his adornments? What happened to "Thou shalt not have any other god before me"?

    March 1, 2013 at 9:06 am |
    • Saraswati

I suspect they would revere god even more. Besides, that line only says "no other gods before me"...I guess you could have an equal god and still be OK.

      March 1, 2013 at 9:10 am |
    • Patrick

We catholics do not worship the pope as a god. That's just stupid. We respect the office of pope, even when the man occupying the office comes up short. We don't pray to him, worship him, think he's a saint, expect him to perform miracles, or any such nonsense.

Why do so many people who know so little about catholicism feel the need to comment about it?

HERE IS "MY" QUESTION (S): Celebacy? How many other religions support this? Are we not, the RCC, trying to change human thoughts, emotions & feelings? IF a preist does NOT give himself to be celebate, does that make him "less" of a priest, OR, just that he cannot be "part of the inner circle"? Is being celebate part of the Bible, OR, is it just a "tradition" created by the RCC? IF, as mentioned in some comments, "castration" COULD be an answer, then would ALL priests, cardinals, and up, agree? Don't think so! Personally, not a catholic, just an outsider looking in, it appears that the RCC is steeped in "outdated" traditions, cannot change, because it would show their teachings are just HUMAN decisions!
