Catholic ads in NY: Jesus was 'the original hipster'

By Pallavi Reddy, CNN

(CNN) – Ads around Brooklyn bring a new meaning to Joan Osborne's lyrics, “What if God was one of us?”

In a new ad campaign launched by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn this month, people in the borough and neighboring Queens have a new way to view Jesus: “The Original Hipster.”

The ads feature the bottom half of a man - meant to be Jesus - wearing robes with a pair of dirty red Converse sneakers peeking out from the bottom.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

In a news release, the diocese refers to Seth Meyers' joke on “Saturday Night Live” that Converse sneakers are why more Catholics are returning to the church, and says the marketing campaign is “showing a cooler and more welcoming side of the Catholic Church.”

Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood, near Queens, is considered to be the "unofficial East Coast birthplace of hipsterism," as a 2012 article in Forbes put it.

Monsignor Kieran Harrington said he understood the importance of relating to the people of the area.

“Jesus appears (in these ads) like people of the L train,” he said. “What is a hipster anyway? Someone who stands against the (mainstream) culture. Jesus stood against the culture.”

CNN Belief: The Curious Case of the Christian Hipster

Ten months ago, the conversation started about creating such a campaign to let people know there are a variety of different faces who attend the church.

Harrington says these particular ads were a collaboration with the ad and PR agency Ruckus. Now they are found in places where the church doesn't usually advertise, including bus stands, restaurants and gyms.

The ads have generated online buzz in Salon, the Gothamist and other sites, and traffic on the diocese's website has gone up 400%, Harrington said.

As for what kind of ads to expect from the diocese next, the monsignor said: “It’s for you to find out.”

Hipsters are pretentious cokehead fools who just recycle the past and don't produce anything new or original. They look RIDICULOUS. Take their late 19th and late 20th century clothing styles and absurd beards they just look like history re-enactors, only with tattoos and piercings. Ugghh.

However, Josephus *does* speak about one Jesus who was called Christ, as the brother of James. "Who was called Christ" and "is the Christ" are two very separate things, so while Josephus (who states he believes the messianic fulfillment came through Vespasian) never says "Jesus was the messiah" he does say that he was known by others as the messiah. And Jesus isn't the only messiah claimant in Josephus' works, among other prophets he has a number of other messiah claimants he mentions like Menahem ben Hezekiah.

Lastly, you can get all this information from actual scholars and experts on Josephus, i am not sure why the first place anyone would go to, would be the pseudo-scholar DM Murdock... While she gets some historical details correct (even a broken clock is right twice a day), she is in fact a conspiracy theorist and a wild one at that. After reading much of her work, like most actual scholars in the field, i do not take her seriously_ bible knowledge for atheists, agnostics and skeptics

Josephus was also a traitor to my people, the Jews. I wouldn't trust a lot of what he wrote. Remember, there was a long tradition of many ancient historians to put words in the mouths of the people they wrote about. Doesn't mean they said it at all.

Stirring the heart and brain in the 21st century:

The Apostles'/Agnostics’ Creed 2013: (updated by yours truly and based on the studies of historians and theologians of the past 200 years)

Should I believe in a god whose existence cannot be proven
and said god if he/she/it exists resides in an unproven,
human-created, spirit state of bliss called heaven??

I believe there was a 1st century CE, Jewish, simple,
preacher-man who was conceived by a Jewish carpenter
named Joseph living in Nazareth and born of a young Jewish
girl named Mary. (Some say he was a mamzer.)

Jesus was summarily crucified for being a temple rabble-rouser by
the Roman troops in Jerusalem serving under Pontius Pilate,

He was buried in an unmarked grave and still lies
a-mouldering in the ground somewhere outside of
      Jerusalem.

Said Jesus' story was embellished and "mythicized" by
many semi-fiction writers. A descent into Hell, a bodily resurrection
and ascension stories were promulgated to compete with the
Caesar myths. Said stories were so popular that they
grew into a religion knowWarn today as Catholicism/Christianity
and featuring dark-age, daily wine to blood and bread to body rituals
called the eucharistic sacrifice of the non-atoning Jesus.

      Amen

This Yeshua or Yehoshua got crucified not only for rabble rousing. If what these books the heretics called "Christians" reflect what really happened, this person was a blasphemer against the one true G_d, a heretic and a charlatan who didn't understand or just hated the way the Temple operated. Attacking money changers was not exactly a good thing to do. The exchange of foreign coins with images, idols, etc. to shekels for Jews making pilgrimage from elsewhere was necessary to keep the outside pagan world separated from the holiest of hollies in the Jewish religion. In the end though, he was handed to the Romans as an enemy of Rome. Just to point it out, like many thousands upon thousands of Jews, slaves, rebels, and opponents of the empire he ended up nailed to beams of wood in a very cruel punishment. What made him so special? He doesn't fulfill any of the true Moschiach's characteristics, the Moschiach doesn't get himself killed. Only Hashem, the master of the universe, is the one true G_d, he is not and will not be "translated" or embodied in a human, that's ridiculous. Christianity, at least in its Trinitarian version, involves the belief in three lower-case gods, not one plus this belief is based on Greco-Roman paganism which adds insult upon injury to the Jewish faith which is true, a mutated paganized heretical Jewish sect.

      New Torah For Modern Minds

“Abraham, the Jewish patriarch, probably never existed. Nor did Moses. (prob•a•bly
Adverb: Almost certainly; as far as one knows or can tell).

The entire Exodus story as recounted in the Bible probably never occurred. The same is true of the tumbling of the walls of Jericho. And David, far from being the fearless king who built Jerusalem into a mighty capital, was more likely a provincial leader whose reputation was later magnified to provide a rallying point for a fledgling nation.

Such startling propositions - the product of findings by archaeologists digging in Israel and its environs over the last 25 years - have gained wide acceptance among non-Orthodox rabbis. But there has been no attempt to disseminate these ideas or to discuss them with the laity - until now.

The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, which represents the 1.5 million Conservative Jews in the United States, has just issued a new Torah and commentary, the first for Conservatives in more than 60 years. Called "Etz Hayim" ("Tree of Life" in Hebrew), it offers an interpretation that incorporates the latest findings from archaeology, philology, anthropology and the study of ancient cultures. To the editors who worked on the book, it represents one of the boldest efforts ever to introduce into the religious mainstream a view of the Bible as a human rather than divine doc-ument.

The notion that the Bible is not literally true "is more or less settled and understood among most Conservative rabbis," observed David Wolpe, a rabbi at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles and a contributor to "Etz Hayim." But some congregants, he said, "may not like the stark airing of it." Last Passover, in a sermon to 2,200 congregants at his synagogue, Rabbi Wolpe frankly said that "virtually every modern archaeologist" agrees "that the way the Bible describes the Exodus is not the way that it happened, if it happened at all." The rabbi offered what he called a "LITANY OF DISILLUSION”' about the narrative, including contradictions, improbabilities, chronological lapses and the absence of corroborating evidence. In fact, he said, archaeologists digging in the Sinai have "found no trace of the tribes of Israel - not one shard of pottery."

These essays, perused during uninspired sermons or Torah readings at Sabbath services, will no doubt surprise many congregants. For instance, an essay on Ancient Near Eastern Mythology," by Robert Wexler, president of the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, states that on the basis of modern scholarship, it seems unlikely that the story of Genesis originated in Palestine. More likely, Mr. Wexler says, it arose in Mesopotamia, the influence of which is most apparent in the story of the Flood, which probably grew out of the periodic overflowing of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The story of Noah, Mr. Wexler adds, was probably borrowed from the Mesopotamian epic Gilgamesh.

Of the Christian Greek Scriptures,(new testament) there are more than 5,000 in the original Greek, the oldest dating back to the beginning of the second century C.E.; in addition, there are some 10,000 copies of early translations in other languages. there is much more info and the cath.church has no hold on the word of God. they just want to control people and their hold on them is about to end.

Sep. 9, 2011 — Ultra high precision analyses of some of the oldest rock samples on Earth by researchers at the University of Bristol provides clear evidence that the planet's accessible reserves of precious metals are the result of a bombardment of meteorites more than 200 million years after Earth was formed.

Anything else, not so much.... never has ... never will.

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

"Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things"

That's why the data, has shown that atheists have happier and healthier lives than conservative Christians. Your post is built on a lie!

Horus and Dionysus did not have 12 disciples, they were not crucified, nor were they in "Hades" or the "Underworld" for three days before rising again.

This is partly why the claims that Acharya makes warrant scholars to distance themselves from her. It certainly is not because she is female (despite what crap she makes up about that), as all one has to do is look at Mary Ann Tolbert, Elaine Pagels and Paula Fredriksen to know that female scholars are well respected based on the work that they do, just as male scholars are. She is simply not respected because her research is amateurish and generally inaccurate. She could write a new book and prove me wrong...but I do not think she is in it for the facts.

some of the claims she's made that are outright false:
      Horus-related ones
Horus having 12 disciples. (completely false)
Horus' mother being named 'Isis-Meri' (the word 'meri' is Egyptian for 'beloved', used for both male and female)
Horus having been crucified (completely false)
Horus being born on December 25th or the Winter Solstice (completely false)
Horus having anything to do with resurrection (completely false)
Horus being baptized (complete fantasy based on misinterpretation of the Egyptian Book of the Dead by Gerald Massey, a poet, art/Shakespeare historian, and pseudo-theosophist)

Ancient Earth Crust Stored in Deep Mantle.........the fire pit of hell ..........faith ?

Apr. 24, 2013 — Scientists have long believed that lava erupted from certain oceanic volcanoes contains materials from the early Earth's crust. But decisive evidence for this phenomenon has proven elusive. New research from a team including Carnegie's Erik Hauri demonstrates that oceanic volcanic rocks contain samples of recycled crust dating back to the Archean era 2.5 billion years ago. Their work is published in Nature.
