Five takeaways from Pew’s comprehensive study on Islam

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – A Pew Research Center study released Tuesday takes an in-depth look at Islam, including how Muslims around the world view extremism, sharia law and the meeting of religion and politics.

The study is a four-year effort by Pew, which conducted 38,000 face-to-face interview in 80-plus languages for the survey. In total, 39 countries and territories were included, all of which had over 10 million Muslims living there.

Here are the report’s five major takeaways:

1.) Differences between U.S. and international Muslims are vast

While Muslims in the United States share a belief system with Muslims abroad, the Pew survey released Tuesday and a Pew survey on American Muslims from 2011 reveals wide differences between the two groups.

An overwhelming number of Muslims outside the United States told Pew that “Islam is the only religion that leads to eternal life in heaven.” Ninety-six percent of Egyptians and Jordanians, 95% of Iraqis and 94% of Moroccan Muslims responded that “Islam alone” leads to heaven.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

When all Muslims outside the United States were considered, only 18% said many religions can lead to heaven. In the United States, that number is 56%, according to the 2011 survey.

Additionally, U.S. Muslims were more likely to have friends who were not Muslim.

“About half of U.S. Muslims say that all (7%) or most (41%) of their close friends are followers of Islam, and half say that some (36%) or hardly any (14%) of their close friends are Muslim,” the survey reports.

By contrast, an average of 95% of Muslims outside the United States said “most or all of their friends are Muslims.”

2.) Sharia law favored, especially by more devout Muslims

A whopping 99% of Muslims in Afghanistan told Pew that they favor sharia law – a Muslim code that dictates everything from dietary laws to morals – as the official law of the land.

Though Afghanistan is by far the most supportive of sharia, majorities in countries like Iraq (91%), Palestinian territories (89%) and Malaysia (86%) favor applying sharia to everyone in their respective countries. Support for this viewpoint was particularly strong in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Middle East-North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Analysis of the survey results by Pew found “most Muslims believe sharia is the revealed word of God rather than a body of law developed by men based on the word of God.”

Those who approve sharia becoming the law of the land generally pray more than their Muslim brethren.

Muslims who pray several times a day in Russia, for example, are over twice as likely to favor implementing Islamic law as the law of the land. The same split between those who pray several times a day and those who pray less often can be seen in Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Tunisia and Turkey.

3.) Most Muslims believe religion, politics should be intertwined

A majority of Muslims surveyed in Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Middle East-North Africa told Pew that religious leaders in their respective countries should have political influence.

Much like favoring sharia law, religious devotion played an important role in these beliefs.

"Devout Muslims tend to be more supportive of religious leaders playing a role in politics,” the survey reads. “In a number of countries, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa but also in Southern and Eastern Europe, Muslims who pray several times a day are more likely than those who pray less frequently to say religious leaders should have at least some influence on political matters."

4.) Around the world, Muslims heralded religious freedom

Despite views that Islam should influence politics and law, an overwhelming number of Muslims told Pew that religious freedom was a good thing.

Ninety-seven percent of Muslims in South Asia, 95% in Eastern Europe, 94% in sub-Saharan Africa and 85% in the Middle East and North Africa responded positively to religious freedom, according to the poll.

“Overall, Muslims broadly support the idea of religious freedom,” the study states. “Among Muslims who say people of different religions are very free to practice their faith, three-quarters or more in each country say this is a good thing.”

5.) Islamic extremism widely rejected, but still a concern

Carrying out violent acts in the name of Islam is strongly rejected by Muslims around the world, according to the survey.

While a majority of Muslims, according to Pew, in all countries surveyed said “suicide bombing in defense of Islam” was rarely or never justified, “there are some countries in which substantial minorities think violence against civilians is at least sometimes justified.”

For example, in the Palestinian territories, 40% of Muslims said suicide bombing was often or sometime justified. In Afghanistan that number was 39% and in Egypt that number was 29%.

Despite most country’s disapproval of violence in the name of Islam, religious extremism – and in particular Muslim extremism – is a concern for a majority of Muslims in the world, according to the survey.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“At least half of Muslims in 22 of the 36 countries where the question was asked say they are at least somewhat concerned about religious extremist groups in their country,” the report reads. “In most countries, Muslims are much more worried about Islamic extremists than Christian extremists.”

Concern over Muslims extremism was at it highest in Indonesia, Iraq and Guinea Bissau, where over 45% of Muslims said they were either very or somewhat concerned about violence in the name of Islam.

    Kindness
This is my experience... Thank you.

    MY personal testimony.
A thought to consider without an ego response

I Accepted Jesus christ as my lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners. Even once we are saved by christs merciful grace we will still experience adversity to mold us to adhering to the truth.
We will slip... But not fall of the ship ...carrying us onward to perfection in christs grace.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from some other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith ....above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

Read Ecclesiastes. Read romans or corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are by faith above reason in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

    my testimony

    Romans 10:9

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

Last eve I passed beside a blacksmith’s door,
    And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime;
The, looking in, I saw upon the floor
Old hammers, worn with beating years of time.
“How many anvils have you had,” said I,
“To wear and batter all these hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he, and then with twinkling eye,
“The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.”
And so, thought I, the anvil of God’s Word,
    For ages skeptic blows have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed – the hammers gone.

    Truth is..exclusive

      Dear Reality:

You are misguiding people by I would assume not knowingly…

There is no doubt on the verses you have quoted… but how would you understand where there are verses talks about allowing Muslim to marry from the people of the book (Quran calls Jews and Christians as People of the Book as they were given book of Torah to Moses and Injeel to Isa (Jesus) from the same source but later those books have been lost) which is Jews and Christians??? It does not go along, does it? And also Quran talks about saving the humanity… saving a human (regardless of faith) as you are saving the mankind and harming a human is u r harming the mankind… it does not go along either, does it?

So what you have to understand that how and when the verses of the Quran was revealed… its not like Paul sat down in prison and started writing his gospels or Luke had a dream on his way to Syria and he had a dream/vision and he started writing what he saw in his dream/vision which in fact became the faith and unfortunately billions of human take it as faith…

It took 23 years to reveal the verses of the quran… 13 years in Mecca and 10 years in Medina… sometimes verses revealed single and sometimes chunk… sometimes the idolaters of Mecca asked question and Muhammad did not have any answer and waited verses to be revealed through angel Gabriel with the answer, and when the answer came, those idolaters rush to Jews at that time to confirm and then Jews scholars at that time also verified… also you need to know that the Quran basically revealed to Idolaters, Jews and Christians as these are the faiths were exist at that time in Mecca and Medina… and in 23+ years these people accepted Islam as their way of life…

Now there were few battles took place between those who accepted Islam which mostly were the slaves at the beginning of the time of Islam and Idolaters with backed up by Jews and Christians… but Muhammad never permitted to start fight against them even the Idolaters were killing and torturing those who accepted Islam … Muhammad waited for verse to come to engage in the battle… and when verses arrived and then only they engaged to the fight… at that time these verses that you are referring to were being revealed… to keep in mind… there is no more revelation after Quran and no more prophet to come till the end of the earth… so these verses are not applicable anymore…

I hope it will help little to understand… and will make individuals to be incouraged to get deep into the Quran as the Quran is not only for muslim but for the entire mankind if one wants to…

Quran also teaches or commands Muhammad and the one who follow Islam (Muslim) to let others know about the “oneness of The Almighty and Muhammad, Isa (Jesus) and Moses were the prophet of The Almighty and having no divine power but just to let others know”… there is no compulsion in religion (2:256) and so on…

Peace be to all of you…

"Though Afghanistan is by far the most supportive of sharia, majorities in countries like Iraq (91%), Palestinian territories (89%) and Malaysia (86%) favor applying sharia to everyone in their respective countries. Support for this viewpoint was particularly strong in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Middle East-North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa."

This is followed by a claim that "Islamic extremism widely rejected".

The contrast of these two claims demonstrates why these simplistic discussions are pointless. To any non-Muslim anyone who supports sharia is an extremist. That is, and always will be, the definition of extremism to the rest of the world.

To have people claiming they support sharia and oppose extremism is never going to fly outside Islamic countries. And this is what people want to know. The question folks in the US want answered is "What percent of US Muslims would support sharia in the US. If you don't address that issue you're just avoiding the elephant in the room.

I have to agree. Majority of world Muslim endorse Sharia Law but with different intepretation – which led to infighting among themselves. Even Partial Sharia implementation is bad enough since it leads to persecution of muslims who broke the precepts of Islam(e.g. consuming alchohol, pork and persecution of women) and it may give religious authority the power to prosecute those they considered threatening the Islamic way of life including Muslim sects (e.g. ahmmadiyya) they disapprove.

Einstein letter, set for auction, shows scientist challenging idea of God, being 'chosen'

      By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

Decades before atheist scientist and author Richard Dawkins called God a "delusion," one world-renowned physicist – Albert Einstein – was weighing in on faith matters with his own strong words.

“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends,” Einstein wrote in German in a 1954 letter that will be auctioned on eBay later this month. "No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

      Earth From Space

Detailed satellite images reveal the web of connections that sustain life on Earth. Aired February 13, 2013 on PBS

      Program Description

"Earth From Space" is a groundbreaking two-hour special that reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine "waterfall" off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the sun's heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet.

MY STILL UNANSWERED QUESTION? Where are the MANY "good muslims", yelling, demonstrating against, turning in, those FEW "bad muslims"? The MANY, and their religious leaders, SHOULD be screaming their heads off, that the FEW, do not represent muslims, Islam! Their silence appears to show tacit approval that the FEW are actually following the teachings of Islam & the qura'n?

    Prayer changes things

    May 3, 2013 at 5:51 am |
    • Jesus

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

SAUDI FUNDED WAHABI TERRORISM IS NOT ISLAM....In all of these areas, the central dynamic is the same – it is the overwhelming wealth of Saudi Arabia that enables the Wahhabi sect to proselytize on a global scale, not the intrinsic appeal of its teachings. Throughout the world, moderates echo the assessment of Somali journalist Bashir Gothar, who writes that his country's tolerant Sufi-infused Islamic culture has been: "swept aside by a new brand of Islam that is being pushed down the throat of our people – Wahhabism. Anywhere one looks, one finds that alien, perverted version of Islam."

My dear brothers and sisters in mankind...

Why do you say something which is not correct... The word Islam is 'Peace'... all the prophets were Muslim (word Muslim also relates to Islam) and word Muslim meaning 'The one who believes and submits to the Oneness of The Almighty'... and Islam came to mankind for peace if you study the time of Quran was being revealed...

PLEASE do not judge Islam by seeing what human does... human are always vulnerable to do wrong things... but that does not mean the entire religion is incorrect... PLEASE say that individual is doing wrong and PLEASE DO NOT say that the Islam in incorrect...

The name of Jesus and Moses are mentioned hundreds of times and so other prophets name… and Mohammed’s name is mentioned only 2/3 times and also one of his attributes was that he is illiterate and chosen from the community who knew him as “Trust Worthy”… do you think if I write a book and I will attribute myself as an “illiterate”?

And of course its all up to you human… and the ‘Free will’ given to mankind and for which we say whatever we want to say and we all will be standing in front of our The Creator on that day and on that day there will be no counselor to talk on behalf of anybody…

Again my humble request to you all ‘please do not judge Islam by seeing few human’s wrong doings’….

I am an American and I love this country and I do not love to see my brothers and sisters in America are accusing me for some individuals wrong actions…

Pease be upon you all… :)

      I judge islam by islam.
It is just another man made contstruct.

The quran tells muslims that it is OK to cheat a non-muslim in a deal. That any contract made with a non-muslim can be broken because it is a contract with an infidel and allah is OK with you cheating infidels.

Why should anyone trust muslims when the quran tells you it is ok to cheat a non-muslim?

Why does the quran teach you that in end times, even the rocks jews are hiding behind will shout out their location so they can be eliminated?

You are cherry picking the quran if you think it only means peace.

If somebody wants to live in peace, then live in peace...no religion required.

If you need religion to guide you through life..to tell you right from wrong then something extremely wrong with your life.

and an alarming number of people are taking the complete opposite message from the religion you describe in your post,
so no...more and more people are going to watch your faith very closely.

      >>>>"You are cherry picking the Quran if you think it only means peace."

But you "cherry picked" the cheating parts of Quran, to try to sway folks that it only means evil. How are you different from them?

Those bad parts are huge....and the 'good' parts? who is to say your definition of good matches their definition of good.
and do we really need this 'guidance' they provide? You might think you are golden with the rules, but an Imam has a bad day, and you might end up with you head on the chopping block over a seemly minor difference in what a rule means.

contrary to what the religious say – I do just fine on my own.

A 'benign' overlord is still an overlord.
