Poll: America losing its religion

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – More than three in four of Americans say religion is losing its influence in the United States, according to a new survey, the highest such percentage in more than 40 years. A nearly identical percentage says that trend bodes ill for the country.

"It may be happening, but Americans don't like it," Frank Newport, Gallup's editor in chief, said of religion's waning influence. "It is clear that a lot of Americans don't think this is a good state of affairs."

According to the Gallup survey released Wednesday, 77% of Americans say religion is losing its influence. Since 1957, when the question was first asked, Americans' perception of religion's power has never been lower.

According to the poll, 75% of Americans said the country would be better off if it were more religious.

The poll doesn't reflect Americans' personal religiosity, such as church attendance, but rather how large events and trends shape shared views, Newport explained.

For example, the sexual revolution, the Vietnam War and the rise of the counterculture fed the perception that religion was on the wane during the late 1960s, he said.

Views of a secularizing America peaked in 1969 and 1970, when 75% of Americans said faith was losing its clout in society. A similar view dominated from 1991-94 and from 2007 to the present.

Americans saw religion increasing its influence in 1957, in 1962 and at a few points during the Reagan presidency in 1980. This number also spiked to its highest point ever - 71% - after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The pollster didn't speculate on the contemporary factors that led to the current views on faith's influence.

Still, the poll numbers are dramatically influenced by church attendance, according to Gallup. More than 90% of people who attend church weekly responded that a more religious America would be positive, compared with 58% of Americans who attended church "less often."

The Gallup poll was conducted via telephone from May 2 to May 7. A total of 1,535 people were sampled for the poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Also notice how the political ticker blog does not allow for replies to stupid comments. If it were not for the replies on this blog, there would not be 75 pages. When you allow people to actually discuss a topic, there is more interest than when you just let morons spout.

Also, look at Eatocracy. They allow you to reply to a reply. That format is pretty cool; you can zero in on the exact person you wish to reply to within a thread.
Don't understand why the blog formats are different for some blogs.

    So where are the bones???

According to Professor JD Crossan's many exhaustive studies, they still are a-mouldering in the ground outside of Jerusalem or were eaten by wild dogs and are now cycling through nature's recycling system.

And by now, JC's remains on a molecular level are spread amongst all the Palestinians, Jews and Christians in and around the greater Jerusalem area and beyond considering the area was a major trading corridor for centuries. And just think if one of JC's bones would be found, he could be cloned. Alleluia !!!!

Or maybe there is some blood on all those hundreds of cross relics. Let the cloning begin!!!!

There are probably still a good number of Americans that believe in God, but not organized religion. Baptists and Catholics have made a fool of themselves so many times. Baptists dropping the Boy Scouts is just one more injustice. Americans do not like mean spirited people; and our churches are full of them.

    • Really-O?

Chad and Really-O? – a dialogue (fictional, just barely)

      ====
Chad: I have a 1980 Yugo that can hit 200 mph.

Really-O?: I find that hard to believe.

Chad: What would you consider necessary and sufficient evidence that my Yugo can go 200 mph?

Really-O?: Let's go out to a track and, under controlled conditions, with anyone interested in attendance, get your 1980 Yugo up to a speed of 200 mph. That would do it.

Chad: Well, look at this...I have a Yugoslavian magazine from 1984 in which this guy says his 1980 Yugo went 200 mph. You see, it says, "And as we passed the hour of noon, we traveled two hundred miles"...or something like that...I had to have it translated into French, and then Spanish, and then Old English and then modern English, but see, right there, plain as day.

Really-O?: Sorry, but that doesn't suffice as necessary or sufficient evidence that your Yugo can go 200 mph. I want to observe your Yugo hit 200 mph.

Chad: I've driven my Yugo 200 mph...I already told you that. You expect me to do it again on demand?

Really-O?: Well, yes. You asked what would suffice as necessary and sufficient evidence and I told you.

Chad: Well, the speed limit is 65.

Really-O?: What does the speed limit have to do with whether or not your Yugo can hit 200 mph?

Chad: You clearly have not investigated Yugos. You need to spend some time reading the Yugo manual and this 1984 Yugoslavian magazine. Then we can have a serious conversation about the issue.

Really-O?: Chad, you asked what would suffice as necessary and sufficient evidence that your 1980 Yugo can hit 200 mph and I told you, clearly and concisely. I don't know what more I can do.

Chad: Well, you see, the real question is, "What would you say if I told you my radio goes really loud?"

Interesting.. What exactly IS "necessary and sufficient empirical evidence"?

I'm guessing that Really-O? is saying that if someone claimed to be the resurrected Jesus, that s/he would still need to see evidence of such a claim.
You seem to be saying that if Jesus were, in fact, undeniably, ressurrected...

Noah's ARk, or the second story of creation...disproven by physics, oceanolgy, ichtyology, biology, meteorolgy, genetics and a few more.

Jonah and the whale (or fish or sea monster...disproven by biology , ichtyology, physics.

All disproven...it is just that you do not accept the proof, but it is there nonetheless.

Come on faith...tell me exactly how it was that god made it rain 6 inches a minute over all parts of the world, simultaniously for 40 days and nights. That is what would be required to raise the water level above the highest peak (29,000 feet) in 960 hours. There isn't that much water on the planet...as it is every drop that falls is eventually evaporated.

How could any of the fich or sea creatures survive the change in water salinty. The fresh water fish would die because of too much salt, the salt water varieties would die because of not enough salt, then you have every species of plant that would have died, so it would be yeras before anything resembling food would start to appear.

if is proven false, the proof has already been determined

perhaps that sticky, salty backup has made its way from your throat up into your brain (such as it is)

Outstanding! Organized, dogmatic religion, the type that is prevalent in the USA, does far more harm than good and it should fade away into insignificant obscurity.

And to summarize for the new members of this blog:

Putting the kibosh on all religion in less than ten seconds: Priceless !!!

    • As far as one knows or can tell, there was no Abraham i.e. the foundations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam are non-existent.

    • As far as one knows or can tell, there was no Moses i.e the pillars of Judaism, Christianity and Islam have no strength of purpose.

    • There was no Gabriel i.e. Islam fails as a religion. Christianity partially fails.

    • There was no Easter i.e. Christianity completely fails as a religion.

    • There was no Moroni i.e. Mormonism is nothing more than a business cult.

    • Sacred/revered cows, monkey gods, castes, reincarnations and therefore Hinduism fails as a religion.

    • Fat Buddhas here, skinny Buddhas there, reincarnated/reborn Buddhas everywhere makes for a no on Buddhism.

    • A constant cycle of reincarnation until enlightenment is reached and belief that various beings (angels?, tinkerbells? etc) exist that we, as mortals, cannot comprehend makes for a no on Sikhism.

Well...regardless of what you believe. This time of falling away is mentioned in the Bible – no one knows the time-frame...but we are in the last days of the existence of earth as we know it. It is becoming more obvious to me that the BIble is right. Evil is decending on the earth.

So much of the bible has been proven wrong, it amazes me that people still buy into it.
And they've been calling the end of days for 2000 years.
Jesus said he would be back in one generation....100 generations later and there are still people waiting for him, like puppies waiting for their masters return.

Well regardless of what we believe?
What I know is that the bible is a book written by man and horribly written at that.
It is irrelevant what is written in that proven piece of fiction.

Drop the "Religion",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,That word should have 4 letters, it's been smeared by the world........... Seek your spiritual side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do it for yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fill the void in your heart,,,,,, then you will be whole. Stop judging the spiritual world with the knowledge of the physical world,,,,,,,Please, this is my wish for all,,,, find your inner self,,,,, seek it with a open heart,,,,, clear your thoughts of this world,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Stop hanging the fate of your immortality on your opinion of Joe Blow who goes to this or that church.....The fact that someone professes to be of this or that "religion" means absolutely nothing.... Honestly try this, and if you find I'm full of crap then you loose nothing,,,,,,,,,,,, But if you find I'm not, you will have inner peace and life eternal....I wish this for all of my brothers and sisters of this life....

You are the captain of a cruise ship,,,, you just obtained knowledge that there's a terrible defect in the ship and it will soon sink.... But the defect cannot be seen so you can't show anyone, but you know when it happens it will all be over in an instant. So you convince your crew that it's for real and send them out to tell the passengers... Some follow right away, but others say oh that's BS there's nothing wrong, just look around us people are happy and having fun. Tell the captain he's nuts, and just laugh. ,So some stay behind. Now, you know that there's enough room on the life boats, but once this happens there won't be time to use them. So do you return to beg and plead with the passengers while they ridicule you and make fun and laugh, or do you shove off with the ones you have?. It's all faith, and once you take the leap of faith with an open heart you to will see it clearly,,,,,,,,,, If you have no intention of EVER having faith like that, you will never know the truth... Very simple.............................................................

If I make up a story... and it contains a highly contrived metaphor... and I think it will convince others... of a point which I am unable to clearly articulate,,,,,,,, then I might have mud between my ears,,,,,,,,,,,
